Nice! I'm supposed to write a 2 minute speech on something that interests me, so I picked crochet, this is helpful because I wanted to put a little bit of history in there! Thanks!!

Very interesting! I'm always fascinated by history and how things we consider modern actually have a past. I had read somewhere that one theory is that crochet originated in Europe somewhere in what we know as France and was started by the fishermen. It was a rough crochet & was more for the nets & then evolved & developed by women. I always think beginners of anything should learn the history of their art. Thanks so much.

debrtx awesome! I could totally see finger-crochet by fishermen turning into crochet! I wonder if we will ever find out what really happened? :P

so agree with you... we know that nets were made and used in Christ's time...but i'll bet with the chinese having been the superpowers of earth a few times already, and with their huge coast line - they made intricate nets. their early armor were little plates lashed together with knots..

That's really interesting that they only used the back loop by default. That must have made their finished products have ridges all throughout. I'm glad it changed to both loops :P

early islanders had shorter hand tools looked like about a S sized hooks carved from wood they made nets with that are clearly crocheted and they date back way before the 1800's

Thanks, really interesting. Maybe you could also research why US and UK stitches started to differ after the Irish introduced it to the US? (US Sc is a UK Dc, US DC is a UK Ttrebble... can be very confusing) As a South African, we use a combination of US terminology and stiches and UK hook sizes (metric in stead of Alphabet letters) and UK yarn terms. (Double knit etc, in stead of worsted weight, etc)

Thank you for doing this challenging research! How did they hold everything in one hand?!! Really really interesting!! By men! No! Well, naturally, everything really did start with the Irish! A little known truth.

Good for you. I just came from a video where a woman said “white women weren’t the inventors of crochet!”

about historical guess? time frame? from the get: men making fishing nets and repairing nets...it's where the whole concept of knotting came in..probably in eurasia along with "lashing" bamboo. either men or women began using carved hooked shuttles/knotting hooks and women picked up the working on the nets and graduated to different knots and different ways to connect them. how socks and other fitted seamless garments came to be. weaving is ultimately knottinig.

actually Christianity puts it back before B.C. .... it was already an established and sophisticated way to catch many fish at once...

Are you aware of how gorgeous you are? A voice in my head is telling me that you are unaware of how your spirit shines.
If you struggle with lung issues, try ginger or ginger beer (home-made is best)
    I'm studying Naturopathy.
Ginger is great for enhancing lung function, curing pain and anxiety
