Its nice to see that on the other end of the spectrum of AAAA Titles like Skull & Bones, this gem exists with its fresh perspective of creativity.
Sadly, I only play "Dectuple A" games. Ubisoft have some catching up to do. Imagine developing a game with only AAAA quality. Pathetic.

I got to speak with the developers of this game last year at PAX East, and when I told them that the relationship between yourself, the car, and the environment reminded me of Outer Wilds, they told me that was one of the best compliments they have received all day. At that point I knew this was a team that understood what they wanted to make, and it pleases me that they succeeded with flying colors.
Outer Wilds is one of the greatest games ever made, and I couldn't agree more. I am noticing quite a few similarities, in my playthrough. I have been waiting for a game like this, ever since I finished Outer Wilds. While games like What Remains of Edith Finch, Firewatch, Dear Esther, The Stanley Parable, etc... helped to scratch that itch, for a time... Nothing has come close to that Outer Wilds experience.
Just a few hours in, it's hilarious that your personal story revolves around becoming obsessed with the car. Because I'm becoming obsessed with the car.

I remember when I had my first car and I was loading groceries into the boot and upon closing it, the rear toyota emblem fell off and clanked and clattered over the grocery store parking lot. Can’t wait to relive that.

Ralph, That squealing is your fan belt slipping on a bad power steering pump pulley. I love the fact you drove it like that anyway. What a perfect Segway to this game I hope to get soon!
You don't know what car he had. Many cars don't don't use the same belt for the fan and power steering pump. and also it's most likely the pump that was bad and not the pump pulley.

@@DirtyYogurt He said "bad power steering pump pulley" the pulley on a steering pumps don't go bad, the pump itself does. When pumps go bad they whine, if the belt it slipping it's because it's not tight enough..
the moment he said this i scrolled down to the comment section to see if someone had an answer and then immediately opened the replies, because i knew for a FACT there would be a disagreement. Reminds me of fond memories i have of guys at my old shop getting into arguments about the most random things with cars. Its pretty cool that i got to relive this under a skillup video.

Roadside picnic was also adapted into the russian film Stalker, one of the greatest films of all time. A tragic irony, part of the filming took place in an abandoned factory and many of the people involved (including the director and the lead actor) died from cancer in the following years due to exposure to dangerous chemichals
Also has some similar environments with the blend of broken technology and ruins in a foggy forested area
I was expecting the video to mention the film and was shocked it was overlooked since it's a much closer adaptation than the game
This russian Stalker film by Andrei Tarkovsky is the most important film many of you guys never saw
@@SonOfLowKey I saw it 17 days ago and I don't get it. I bet if I saw Citizen Kane I'd find it to be a big question mark too. Maybe at the time it was important for their respective film industry but as something to watch, Stalker was meh. Strange and boring. Or maybe drawn out and boring is more apt.
A day or so before that I had Roadside Picnic audiobook playing in the background and it definitely isn't something that's just good because someone says so. It was also meh, granted I didn't get through that one entirely and I probably never will. But the movie I did and it wasn't for me.
Maybe if you're older you won't know, but this reminds me of Elden Ring. Something so supposedly great everyone has to like it, there is no way someone can dislike it.

29:35 loose/old powersteering belt by the sounds bro. Deadheading the steering motor by full locking the steering can spike pressure causing the pump to have resistance and your belt will slip. Can also be fixed by playing with your relief valve or changing the oil for something thinner. Id recommended atf oil.
my car had this rapid-fire clunking sound on the right, that increased in speed the faster I accelerated. like 4-6 per second at 30mph, and machine gun fire on the highway. after 2 days I heard a snap, like a breaking rubber band, then the sound disappeared completely

I had the same exact problem in my wrx and the pump eventually went out so I just bypassed the pump with a shorter belt from the crank to the alternator
Ohhhh, the belt! I thought the coupling itself, or the motor. Belt also makes sense.
I could not stop thinking about this game after I finished the demo and wrote my first impressions. SO glad to see this in "strongly recommend" category.
I was shocked by how much I liked the demo. Especially after having to do everything manually. But you really do get into a groove of parking. Hand braking. Turning the engine off. It’s just super satisfying. And the music was killer too

At 10:00: This sounds like Outer Wilds (discovering alien technology, developing a connection with your vehicle, learning new rules that affect your environment, etc). And that is a REALLY good thing.
At the end... Yeah, I should have known that ShillUp would also make this comparison.
It gave me hints of Outer Wilds and Subnautica ... I like the previews and demo so much I bought it, and I don't pre-order very often ( maybe three times in a decade ).
The whole time I was thinking "hmm this sounds like Outer Wilds" and as soon as I heard the music was like "I F*CKING KNEW IT" 😂
I thought SkillUp used generic copyright free music for every video. Maybe I'm wrong?

Made me really happy as well. Books are totally out of fashion nowadays, always warms my heart when someone gives a shout-out to such important authors as the Strugatzki brothers. If anyone here who is into "Roadside Picnic" hasn't yet read "Hard to be a God", absolutely do it. They always manage to create so much depth behind seemingly action-adventure books.

@@anthonylesley982 Picking up this book (and the Strugatskis in general) might be the biggest thing you can do for your personal development today.
I read all their stuff, they shaped me like no other book, movie or piece of music. People often recommend classic Russians like Dostoewsky, Tolstoi or others but frankly that shit UNREADABLE. There might be some wisdom in those books, but it's so unbelievable boring. Strugatskis on the other hand are always fun and engaging at first, but the more you think about it, the deeper it gets.
I've been binging Skill Up reviews for the past week. This guy has the soul of a novelist or poet, and I think the gaming community is very lucky to have him.
I have been a fan of Shill Up for quite a while now but I honestly feel like he have recently leveled up in his reviews. He was good before but I feel like he is more comfortable to talk about games as an artform now and goes deeper in his analysis. That is why I really like his reviews even when I don't agree with his opinions. It a joy to listen to.
One of a few gamers I trust. He has gotten me to try several atypical games that I ended up loving. Has saved me from several other typical hits.
This video once again reminded me that he makes one of the best video game reviews on this platform

It’s almost a bummer when he does a review of a game I already know I want to play because I’m big on organically experiencing games so I can’t watch it until I finish said game.
Yeah generally I watch Skillup reviews after I beat the game if it's as story and experience based as this one, but just look at the title of the video and Steam review percentage to get an idea of what the public's perception of the game is. I love Ralph but he can overexplain some story or gameplay components to the point of spoiling stuff which isn't necessary to be explained for a review. On multiplayer or games where story is less important that's chill and I watch them as they come out, but for a game like this I'm absolutely glad I waited to beat it to watch the review.
@@Sirrincai So I bought and finished the game and then watched this video later. And I am SO glad I didn't watch the video footage or even listen to it after the first 4 minutes earlier. Shill Up explained and showed WAY TOO MUCH here. Also, this review is way too long for such a game and he still somehow didn't cover the issues with the game although they are not egregious.
Once, when my headlights were broken, I needed to use flares to see the path forward. I threw one ahead after looting a building, towards another building. I turned around to get in the car to follow the path where the flare landed, then as I opened the door, the flare came back and smacked agained my car. I threw it again... and something threw it back... again. There was a group of tourists where I threw the flare... The flare only came back when I wasn't looking at it.
The moment this game gets a VR release (or a motion-control enabled native VR mod), is gonna be a magical moment for sure!
If only VR wasn't so niche. I'm a believer too!
You can play it in Vr with preydogs UEVR mod! That mod allows you to play all unreal 4/5 games in vr with options for motion controls too!

It might not seem like it but Ralph is an extremely skilled reviewer becuase he understands the economy of words. I admire you as an artist when it comes to reviews because you know when to be ulititarian and when to creatively channel your linguistic resources and masterful writing to pay the respect that respective games deserve. You have all the craft of a skiled writer and none of the snobbery. I love your work through and through! You dont just review, you make choice artistic decisions!

I mean, when you have around 200K subscriber other channel to give you a starting boost initial growth from 7K is not that big of a problem.

In the best way, this reminds me of the driving segments in Half Life 2, if you really focused on and expanded the things that made that part of the game so compelling.
I was already interested in the premise in the first place but the comparison to Outer wilds just completely sold me on the game and i'm looking forward to playing it, thank you for the review and recommendation
The Russian film "Stalker" is a classic if you don't want to read a book to beef up your enjoyment of this game.

Roadside picnic, one of my favorite books. They also said a primary inspiration was annihilation and the rest of the Southern Shore series. Which is another one of my favorites.

@anthonylesley982 Depends, it's not the easiest read, lotta run-on sentences. Are you a fan of SCP? Because it very much feels like a group dealing with a single SCP. People say book 2 is the worst since not much really happens, but it's my favorite of the series. Book 1 is an introduction, book 2 is about trying to understand, and book 3 is madness and feelings.
As soon as he mentioned the fear of the depths or space, I was really hoping for an Outer Wilds comparison.
If Ralph likens something to Outer Wilds, I am immediately sold.

I’ve thought about personally doing these sorts of video game reviews but when I see videos like these where your ideas are so perfectly captured in the way you disect what makes these games so great I would have nothing new to bring to conversation. You are truly an autour for the TH-cam review/gaming space and these kinds of videos are the reason I come back to watch every time. I love this review primarily because your description of the appreciation of maintenance of your jalopy perfectly describes my life long love of working on cars. Taking a car far beyond it's designed life expectancy is deeply rewarding, not just financially but emotionally as well.

I really hope they add wheel and pedal support. If only partially. Immersion would be off the hook.
The problem with that is, it wouldn't be that good of an experience, play the demo, you do constantly get out your car and go scavenging, you'd have to switch between your wheel and a controller/mouse and keyboard constantly. Not to mention you have to move the camera with the mouse and look at things to turn them on and off; windscreen wipers and handbrake etc

The idea that driving a car across The Pacific Northwest is made compelling is a testament to how much mileage you can squeeze out of an idea. Rather than being a simple Point A to Point B adventure, what you outline about the game is an exploration into Nostalgia for vehicles and their Quirks. The connections you make with your first car will always stick with you, as I could feel the passion you had for that garbage station wagon with every concession you made in love for it. Well done, SkillUp.

I remember seeing this game years ago in very early access. It was a completely different game where you hunted down giant monsters and leviathans. Crazy how far this game has come. Everything about it looks so interesting! I’m very excited to play this!

the handling of the game "release the brake, turn on the light, accelerate, stop, putting on the handbrake, etc... repeat" remind me a lot of Outer wilds

What a time to be alive. A new Rocksteady game is not recommended but a unknown indie game is. Bittersweet but it is what it is. Happy for Pacific Drive and Ironwood Studio.

there are many dozens of options regarding basically every thing you could consider customizing or tailoring to your experience, including fov for both on foot and driving

OK the Roadside Picnic analogy was I all needed. I 100% agree that people should read that story. The one chapter that is basically just a philosophical discussion about what intelligence is and how we aren't equipped to fully identity or measure it after such an event, gets me every time I go back and read it.

Great review. I wasn't sure about the gameplay loop, but the atmosphere, art and storytelling can make the seemingly arduous gameplay feel rewarding. Also the comparisons to Stalker, Twin Peaks, Alan Wake and Outer wilds really sold it to me. This is right up my alley.
Roadside Picnic is one of my favourite (very weird) novels. I'm so happy to see it mentioned on a popular TH-cam channel, as you often *only* hear about STALKER.
Man, I was already completely sold on this. And then your final comparison game… extra double sold me!
Escape from Tarkov is heavily inspired by Roadside Picnic. Tarkov comes from the filmmaker Tarkovsky who adapted Roadside Picnic into a film and called it Stalker. Also a great film.
You sold me on Outer Wilds, and now I will be buying my first 'driving' game as well based on your infectious passion. Keep it up my man.

Appreciate the intro Ralph. Strugatsky brothers are my all-time favorite writers. They have so many great books although to really understand most of them you gotta have some USSR-life experience. Strongly recommend "Monday Begins on Saturday" book.
