Its been a while since I played but I'm almost positive that if you end a battle after a fatal hit but before your hp hits zero you get to keep whatever the hp counter had remaining... not 1 hp unless the counter happened to stop at 1 hp when the battle ended (meaning you were like a quarter second from dying)
Yes. The exception is that if you are at zero HP but kill the last enemies before the "got hurt and collapsed" message appears, the character will be kept alive on 1 HP.
It has to be a frame rule thing, like if you press confirm on an attack before your hp hits 0. And that attack will end fight, I’ve seen the have several times in one play thru hit zero and roll back to 1
Earthbound is such a comfy game to me. The visuals, the audio, and watching other people play it fast and learning about the speedrun makes me feel so relaxed and cozy. I've watched people run EB on twitch countless times over the years and I never get tired of it lol. Thanks for this top tier cozy video. 💖

i gotta be honest, my favorite part of these history videos is always the really early sda era stuff. that skateman run from 2012 is so fascinating to me, because you almost never see speedruns from that early with a full stream layout, facecam, livesplit (or in that run's case, Wsplit) and its such a cool time capsule into the past
I'm in love with historians but with the lofi and smoothing voice... You're on your way to be big. I always tell everyone to find speedruns they dont know that have some crazy mechanics and thats what you do. I love that. Im here for the long haul.
While I 100% agree, it was a different time, they couldn't as easily stored EVERY run submitted, so it makes sense to limit them by quality, but tbh I don't think that should apply to a first run.
@@emilian0e i believe that Earthbound tries to connect every single mood possible in a whole game. from happy stuff, to weird stuff, to creepy stuff, to annoying stuff, through a lot of emotion trips. thats why Giygas was the biggest cherry on top of a cake ever. to show what a scary nightmare could be like.
Man I wish Earthbound was easier to mod. I'd love to play a new Earthbound game on the same engine with new maps enemies spells but same characters. There was one Earthbound game someone made in RPG Maker 2003 that was awesome
You should get more views! Excellent video quality! No jokes, no "clowness" or some BS edit, This make the videos WAY more professional! Thanks for the video!
Just wait until some crazy person decides to rng manip the whole game. Just a matter of time until someone does it. Could be years from now though. Probably best to wait for a good non glitch tas to come out and review what could be possible. Full length rng manips aren"t unheard of in gaming either. If i remember right, dragon quest 1 has one and final fantasy 1 has a tas full length rng manip. This would be sick though. Could seriously push it real close to the 3 hour mark.
This was a great style or speedrun storytelling, starting with an in depth explanation of the mechanics. I seldom have the desire to watch over an hour of anything, this is one of those exceptions. Well done.
Hello! I just wanted to say that I really enjoy watching your videos, I was a regular at your streams a while back but my change in lifestyle makes it harder for me to catch evening streams. But I hope you are doing great and achieving everything you are aiming for! Happy Christmas! 💜
I love your channel so much. Been binging your videos and playing FF7 Rebirth on Hard Mode while home and sick. Hope to see more FF speedrun progression videos in the future!
That's funny I was watching on stream and programmed the shutting down of my computer. And it shuted down 30 seconds before the video ended. What a brillant documentary video ! Very well done Doc !
I almost feel like you made this video to show off a little, heh heh~ But everyone here does a really good job with the big M2. The RNG is absolutely wacky to the point I'm astonished if a run gets finished. This is all much harder than a headline might seem! I've watched a lot of folks run EarthBound, even Doc, and my god, it's practically a coin flip with a weighted guitar pick!
This reminded me of something. I play Adventure of Link, and try to beat it without dying at all. If you've played it, you know this is a completely insane challenge. I did pull it off once, but there's a problem: in the final palace you'll have depleted most of your magic by the time you get to the boss. This is bad because you need magic to hit it. Fortunately, there are two magic recharge potions in the nearby room... Maybe. Each of them has a 50% chance of being a magic potion, and a 50% chance of being the hardest normal enemy in the game. So you're depending on a coin flip, after beating 99% of the game.
I have a question, why do runners keep playing against the timer after they've beaten giygas, if beating giygas is apparently the end of the game? For example, all of the clips of andyperfect have him calling out the time of the wr/pb which you use to stand in for each run, but his timer keeps going as he plays the credits, the picky scene, and the final kill screen at the end. It confuses me that there's an entire split that is timed and played, but doesn't count towards pb/wr.
Japanese timing is from console on until "The End?" appears on screen, so Andy keeps his timer running to also have a reference to what the run would be if it were using Japanese timing.
found this video earlier on today, decided to save it for tonight (now) to be stoned while i watch it, this is gunna be great. best game ever that was made in that year, for this console.
I'm surprised that the speed runners don't take a little bit of time to do the rock candy/ sugar packet trick mentioned even in the included strategy guide for boosting stats. Sure it's a random of four stats that it increases but spending ten minutes doing it for a few characters massively boosts their gains next level with no consequences.
I was able to glitch off the stairs to out of bounds in my first run of Earthbound (on WiiVC) I think in a pyramid.... But I was scared I would softlock and I hadn't saved, just save stated, so I save stated back to a safe point. Never could replicate what I did. T_T
Based on the videos' formatting, choice of music, and the style of narration you've clearly been inspired by Summoning Salt. Now if only you showed the same amount of humility that he has in his videos detailing world records for Punch-Out.
I always hated how summoning salt WONT DO a rpg speed run, no matter how much the community begs. Due to that alone he lost a sub and a patron and you sir just won both.
Good video, I would have cutdown on the run by Skateman if you are going to more or less copy SummoningSalt's formula (The way he talks, the music and overall how it is edited). It is kind of long and it would feels stretched for a fan of speedrun but not EB in particular. It is also kind of weird when you are part of the runners in the video and is the person holding the record by the end, it is like a reporter reporting on himself for acknowledgement. But still, well done, the effort can definitely be felt in this video.
@@geoffkannenberg6167 yeah but he talks about the parts that will be relevant later in the video, as for this one we see the whole thing, which is not necessarely bad depending on the target audience. SSalt's videos appeal to anyone interested in speedrun and this video seems to attempt to mimic him so I was just pointing out where it could be made better in my opinion.

Yeah, but it’s must better to use an infinite HP cheat so you don’t have to worry about that crap at all!

I can't accurately express how exciting it is to find an uploader making high quality long form content with under 10k subs. Amazing content my dude.

Im glad Speed Demo Archive is no longer prominent. Their policy of rejecting runs because they didn't like the way they looked was really stupid.
Rejecting low-quality runs was an objectively good thing.
While I 100% agree, it was a different time, they couldn't as easily stored EVERY run submitted, so it makes sense to limit them by quality, but tbh I don't think that should apply to a first run.
Woaaaaah the twist that the Historian is actually the history maker! Awesome video, Earthbound is such a great game!
Ayeeeee thanks for the mention homie B) Great video, glad somebody finally put it together. Here's to a glorious future for EB speedruns 😁
