Actually it was Diana who helped modernize the monarchy. Simply joining social media isn't completely modernizing the monarchy. Also, the question about having to make an appointment to see the Queen, well of course you do but Harry had to be diplomatic about it. So if we are praising the Queen's ability to move with the times, how about not having her immediate family make appointments to see her? Do you have to kiss up to her to have some priority like Sophie, Countess of Wessex does? And as usual people bring up Diana for some sympathy, how about giving her the HRH title back and respecting her wishes to be buried next to her father not in an island near a lake like it was some ritualistic burial smh.
I don't think you are understanding the term properly. She was a commoner in the sense that she didn't have a title. No one was saying she didn't come from a well-off family. The usage of the term is correct.
