    What is your formula for sizing the length of the band itself?

    • @KeyWestWaterman
      @KeyWestWaterman  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I just match the length of bands that it came with. can adjust a smidge if i want more or less pull. I never have needed to use a formula. have all my guns band lengths written down. If you buy a gun without bands, I'd call the manufacturer and they can tell you. Too tight or loose or bands can make a gun inaccurate.

      I measure from the muzzle hole to where the band will end at the wishbone once loaded. You then divide that number by the stretch ratio you want times 2. So let’s say your distance from muzzle hole to where the wishbone ends at loading notch is 48” and you want to stretch the bands 350%. Divide the 48” by 3.5. It gives you 13.71 X 2 = 27.42 so make the band 27 1/2”.
      If you want more stretch, say 375% then divide by 3.75.
      Hope this helps.

      You can use the same formula for a roller gun except I use a rope to go from my pretension anchor point at the bottom of the gun, around the pulley and up to the anchor point minus the wishbone. So say that measurement is 90”, divide that total length by stretch ratio, say 3.5 and you get a band length of 25.7”.
      This would be one band so for a single roller you’d make two bands.
      Chris Coats also has a good roller gun series called Unrolling the Roller. His method is to use half the barrel length plus 5cm. So a 100cm barrel would use a 50cm plus 5 so 55cm band.

      @@albertaraujo6358 great rule of thumb. Sorry for being a math Karen...but couldn't you just take your distance and multiply it by 0.57 (2 divided by 3.5)? Easy to remember "57 magnum" (obviously, it's .357 magnum, but 57 is easy enough to remember since both are guns, lol). 48" * 0.57 = 27.4"

      @@albertaraujo6358 Awesome! Forgive my ignorance, but is 350-375% stretch a good average to shoot for? (no pun intended) Or is it different for different guns?

    Love the intro the spearfishing videos. Wish these were available when I was first getting into spearfishing. Definitely still learning a lot from you so thanks.
    So people can google/youtube how-to tie videos the types of knots you used are called:
    Wishbone bead= double overhand stopper
    Removable wishbone= sheetsbend
    Knots to tighten the "double cinch"= two half-hitches

    Metric conversion of band diameters:
    9/16" ~ 14mm
    5/8" ~ 16mm
    3/4" ~ 19mm

    That’s a new way to do it for me. I always used .035 stainless safety wire, as that was what I was taught. A pair of pliers and side cutters and you’re in business. Just twist the wire with the pliers until you like what you see, cut off the twisted wire leaving about an inch of ‘tail’. Bend the tail piece over and stick the sharp end into the rubber band so you don’t poke yourself. Kinda looks like a haywire twist. You can over tighten them this way and actually cut the rubber band, but it’s pretty simple. Like you said, there are several ways to do it.

    It would be nice if you discussed how to select band length and desired stretch ratio, 300%, 350%, 375%, 400%.

    • @KeyWestWaterman
      @KeyWestWaterman  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Totally understand that. But These videos are for beginners and I don’t think they should be adjusting band lengths yet. They should be tying bands the same length that the gun came with from the manufacturer.

      if you plan on going beneath the surface of the water yes it is essential. If you plan on spearing from the surface not necessarily.
