  • Want to grow out your gray hair and ditch the dye, but don't want to bleach it and don't want to cut it? But don't want to go full-on "cold-turkey" because you don't want to rock a demarcation line (aka "skunk stripe") during your grow-out? Then the Dye Strip Technique of Going Gray is for you!
    My guest: Diana M. discusses how she went gray "in secret" using this technique, that she learned from TH-cam's own Suzan Barnes!

    I started this process on Thursday after watching your video. This is a great idea. I had about 1 1/2 new growth, naturally dark brown hair. Went to the salon,explained process/ video and am pleased with results. The stylist was apprehensive, kept stearing me towards highlights, stripping, other time/ costly processes. After looking at me like I was crazy, she finally agreed to do it. For me, this was the way to go. Thank you both for the great information.

    Thank you so very much! This is by far the best method I’ve seen that suits my goal of growing out my grey, sans expensive and repeat visits to the salon, while at the same time looking presentable for work. I did my first strip last night on my 3 month “covid grow out”. The only change I made was that I’m using semi-permanent dye so that it fades without having to grow all the way out once I stop dying. Fingers crossed!

    I’m lucky my hair is doing this naturally. The top portion of my hair doesn’t have a lot of grays so there isn’t a noticeable demarcation. But every underneath has harsh demarcation line. So this has made growing out my gray easier.

    Great video!! Growing out my grays and I highlighted the front and sides to blend it in but I have dark hair and right now it's a medium brown with highlights. I ve embraced my natural silver this year by having my hairdresser put a half head of foils in to breakup the regrowth. It’s worked really well and getting lots of positive feedback. Another way a friend did hers was using semi permanent hair colour slightly lighter that your dyed hair colour. It doesn’t leave an obvious demarcation line and you just keep going lighter and lighter. 👩🏽‍🦳

    • @dfmoffitt
      @dfmoffitt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question. It would be a challenge with bangs. I would talk to a hairstylist about how to best use this technique with bangs. I never had issue with putting my hair up. You can definitely see the gray coming in and my dark hair at the ends but it wasn’t a harsh demarcation line so it didn’t bother me as much.

    • @dfmoffitt
      @dfmoffitt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You have a very good eye. The photo that was used to intro the video was a month that I chose to dye the strip from roots to ends. The reason I did this, is because my dyed hair was fading so much that it was a reddish light color at the ends and looked very damaged. By dyeing the hair all the way to the ends it looked much healthier. I only did this once during the grow out process.

      Is your hair very thick? You could always try it for a few days before trying the dye strip technique and see how it goes?

  • @fr514
    @fr514 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Sooooo, vaseline is REALLY hard to wash out of hair. Needs a clarifying shampoo. Also, if you have curly hair finger twirl it whilst styling so the dark demarcation line is more hidden. You'll see what I mean!
    Update - 7 washes later, including the use of heavy duty dish soap and bicarb of soda, the grease is still there. Vaseline is not water soluble. And keep in mind by this stage your hair is brittle from extremely heavy cleansing and dye will be ruined. Make sure you deep condition twice if you need to wash with dish soap. Perhaps add a few drops of scalp oil and massage in once the vaseline eventually goes.
    If you are in the US try the blue Dawn soap, if UK try Fairy. However, before any of that, try the vaseline on a tiny bit of hair first and see how it washes out. I would strongly suggest finding something other than vaseline. I wish I had!

    I had grown out my grays , but I looked so old .... So I dyed my hair again (copper brown). But it is so much work, I have to dye it every 3 weeks!! I am now growing my hair and when it is the right length I will dye it darkbrown (that was my own colour before I got gray) and I will do the Dye Strip Technique. I love the Gray Stripes very much. Maybe that is my stile to begin with !!

    I'm 57 and finally going grey enough to notice - sort of half and half - but the back and underneath are still very dark! I have dark hair but have been blonde for the last 12 years and I was oh so very sick of going to the hairdresser because my hair grows so fast (every 4 weeks). I went back to close to my natural colour but now of course I have the opposite root problem - I'm an idiot lol So far this is the best technique I have seen - I really don't want to have to go to the hairdresser all the time I absolutely hate it and want to feel my natural hair texture again. I'll be doing this thanks so much for the vid.

    question: when first starting this method, do you take the strip of hair from the middle part/section, or do you automatically start with just strip-dying a bit off to the side? Because I heard that you have to be able to part your hair on the side of you want to do this but it's not apparent by this video if that's what she did.

      You can start right away - you don’t need to have any gray roots to begin with. Just tell your hairdresser that, instead of having her color all your hair, you just want her to do that strip.
      If it helps, I have a PDF of my blog posts with instructions in my shop - a lot of people buy that and give it to their hairdresser. Just go to shop.katiegoesplatinum.com. And look for the $5 ebook. Good luck!

      yes, it's a little more difficult with curly hair for sure.

    It doesn't damage your hair when you do that one strip?

    • @KatieGoesPlatinum
      @KatieGoesPlatinum  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just as much damage as we usually get when we dye our hair.
      Personally, when I decided to go gray, I was done with chemicals because my hair was so damaged. But not everybody wants to go gray cold turkey, and they’re willing to risk a little damage to hide their skunk stripe.

    • @hlinfl9513
      @hlinfl9513 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what I thought. I'm not sure I'm grasping exactly what she's saying. I'd think you'd try to dye gray to blend over the color?

    • @thecatatemyhomework
      @thecatatemyhomework 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would only work if you have very short hair. What about all the dark hair that falls below your shoulders?

    • @KatieGoesPlatinum
      @KatieGoesPlatinum  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s almost impossible to dye dark hair silver - you’d have to use bleach first, which can be quite damaging. Plus, it’s very hard and costly to match the silver with your own natural color. So this is a good compromise ♥️

    • @jjbowman4653
      @jjbowman4653 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Assume it will take a year to grow 6 inches of new hair growth. Depending on your hair length it can take a few years, I believe this is the reason many women cut it to a bob/lob/pixie

    • @KatieGoesPlatinum
      @KatieGoesPlatinum  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, yes - as JJ said, it depends on the length you're trying to achieve, If you were just going to grow your hair out to a bob, it would take much less time than if you were growing it out to shoulder-length. Shoulder length took me about 2- 2 1/2 years, and my hair grows faster than average. A chin-length bob would probably take a bit over a year?

    So dumb question. I have medium long brown hair with the skunk line. My hairdresser explained that in order to “stain” the hair gray that she has to essentially strip my hair of its color before she can add the gray because it won’t stick to my dark strand, have you heard of this? And are you dying your skunk line a dark color or the gray? Thank you!

    • @KatieGoesPlatinum
      @KatieGoesPlatinum  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, not a dumb question! Your hairdresser is correct - dark hair has to be bleached a lot in order to get it light enough to try to color it gray. That's why a lot of us brunettes opt NOT to bleach because (unless your hair is very strong and healthy), that amount of bleaching can damage your hair and cause breakage, etc.
      If you're doing the dye strip method, you are dyeing that strip the same color that you're already dyeing your hair (so for example, dark brown) and letting the grays grow underneath the strip. Hope that helps!

    Interesting idea! How about dyeing just the part itself, rather than a 2 inch wide strip?

    • @KatieGoesPlatinum
      @KatieGoesPlatinum  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm afraid that wouldn't really help - it would just cover your roots, but if you want to go gray "in secret" you need the extra hair from the strip to hang down over the gray hair.

    • @KatieGoesPlatinum
      @KatieGoesPlatinum  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it would be hard to make this work with bangs, as you need to flip the dyed hair over the gray hair to make it work. But if you are comfortable rocking gray bangs with dark hair (which could be a cool look), maybe that's an option?

    Question? Why would it work for curly hair??

    • @KatieGoesPlatinum
      @KatieGoesPlatinum  ปีที่แล้ว

      It works best with hair that you can part on it on one side and that is straight enough to hang down over the gray hair growing in. Of course, you could always try it for yourself, but I’ve been told it doesn’t work as well on curly hair. ❤️

      Hi - you can check out my blog post for detailed instructions: katiegoesplatinum.com/dye-strip-technique-going-gray-in-secret/ also my video How To Go Gray which shows updated process photos that should help you:

      But to answer your question - you are dyeing the roots ONLY of that strip of hair the same color you've been dyeing your hair the whole time. So if you've been dyeing it dark brown, you'll continue to dye the ROOTS of that strip (ONLY) the same dark brown, while all the rest of your hair will remain undyed. It sounds crazy but it works!

      I'm using Gray Away to help me during my grow out. I don't spray the product directly on my hair, though, I spray it on a cotton square & then rub that down my hair. When I do my bangs I hold a cotton square underneath my bangs & then then rub a sprayed on square down my bangs. To do the backs of them, I simply push my bangs back up against the top of my head & rub the square against the backs, going towards the back of my head (direction rubbing referance). Try that! :D

    This wouldn't work for all women, mine is really long and wavy and this would show, I was only doing roots of the top section for years but got sick of it now my hair is 3 inch grey strip at roots, mid to light faded brown and then very dark brown mixed with grey underneath, I love the grey stripe and the grey mix but I hate the faded brown dye that I can't work out how to get rid of.

    • @dfmoffitt
      @dfmoffitt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would suggest talking to a hairstylist about dying the ends of your hair a color that makes you happy. They should be able to dye it without touching your roots. Just be sure to be very clear about your wishes because I have heard horror stories about women who have asked for this to be done and the hairstylist ends up covering up their hard earned gray growth.

      Michelle S yes, but some women don’t want to go gray cold turkey where the demarcation line shows, so this is a great option for them. When they’re ready to show their gray growth, they just flip their part to the gray side and let the dyed strip grow out undetected (beneath the gray).

    What I don't understand is you're trying to get away from dying your hair so I don't get how you're doing this I have dark hair I have gray just in the front of my face n color the rest but i m getting tired of coloring my hair so I just don't get what you say about dying the hair because if you're going to let your hair grow out Gray you want to get away from dying your hair

    • @KatieGoesPlatinum
      @KatieGoesPlatinum  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Everyone is different - you and I are willing to go gray cold turkey, but a number of women do NOT want to do it that way. This method gives them the option to grow out their gray in secret by just dyeing one little strip of hair for a bit longer. We all have to choose the method that works best for our temperament.

    • @KatieGoesPlatinum
      @KatieGoesPlatinum  ปีที่แล้ว

      Believe me, I get it! I had a really hard time understanding it at first. Basically, you're only dyeing that one strip of hair (it has to be on your side part for this to work), and that dyed strip hangs down over your graying hair and hides it. It creates the illusion of still having dark hair.
      Once your gray roots grow out long enough that you feel comfortable showing them to the world, you flip your part to the gray side and it looks like you're fully transitioned! In the meantime, you just let that dyed strip grow out underneath your gray hair and nobody can even see it. It's like magic!
