Hard to believe how we all obsess about miniscule details of set-ups etc; and here you see Paul's Casino with a completely backwards nut, virtually no set-up, and he's playing tracks and solos for the ages, on records that will be world famous for another hundred years or more...
There was somebody in The Beatles who thought about the visuals. They'd painted the Rickenbackers black. They'd got matching J160e's. After the 325 and 360/12 somebody must've thought that blue Stratocasters wouldn't look right and instead used the Casinos that even matched Paul's Hofner a bit. This was the last time that the visuals were considered.
Don’t forget the Rocky Strat, the ric bass, and John’s J160 all had psychedelic paint jobs as well as John and George stripping their casinos and Paul his bass
I recently went to the rock and roll hall of fame for the second time this year and both times I spent well over 10 minutes just looking over every aspect of John’s casino. I’d love to hear it plugged in today.

The model designation of the Casino was the E-230. Gibson named its models for their prices. The ES-335 was $335, the ES-125 was $125, etc. So when the Casino was introduced, it was $230
Glad Michael decided to join permanently! Now the ante has been upped! The song they recorded on May 17, 1967, was in fact the first two parts of "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)". The complete first part as well as the entire second part can be heard on "Anthology 2", where you can hear Paul and George clanking away on their Casinos.
Some random scattered thoughts, there is a lot to unpack and I didn't take notes so, going backwards...You Never Give Me Your Money has George playing all the lead, including the coda (outtakes attest to that.) I reckon it's the Casino too. As Sam said, John plays the guitar in Because and if he played the guitar on Oh Darling, as is stated officially, he had to have used George's Casino because that (and Paul's, but we know he didn't play it) is the only guitar that gives the final arpeggio like so (it's also done on the outtakes so it wasn't a spontaneous thing.) Man, I feel left out! My Epiphone is a 1988 Sheraton II - the replacement for a couple of the ‘60s Epi models (solid block down the inside, American-made Bigsby, Dual Humbuckers, guitar made in Korea, headstock says Epiphone by Gibson on it, with the proper logo for each name). But it has a story. At around the 9th fret, it had a little dip in the neck that caused fret buzz! After I sent back TWO of them like this, I called Gibson in Nashvile and actually got through to the V.P. In charge of Quality Control. I told this Southern Gentleman of my trouble with this model. He was very nice about it all, and he told me he personally would go down to the warehouse, and PLAY as many of them as he had to until he found me a good one! A couple of weeks later, UPS delivered my THIRD Epiphone Sheraton II, and this one was GREAT! I still own it, and it plays like no other!
I was able to score a MiK casino about 5 years ago and it’s been my trusted no.1 ever since. I’ve upgraded the pickups and electronics, got locking tuners, and gave it a psychedelic paint job during my time with it. Nothing has ever sounded better through just AC30!

This episode may be one of my favorites from you guys. I have a theory as to why George’s Casino had its Bigsby bar removed. My idea is that whoever was sanding it down found it to be in the way or a nuisance when they were sanding the finish off, and to make it easier, they just sawed the bar off to make the sanding job easier.

Regarding the photo of John wearing the Sandals during the Abbey Road sessions, the spring/summer of 1969 was one of the hottest in the history of the UK and there are photos from those sessions where you see George and Ringo also with Sandals from a different day. Also the incident of John declaring he was Jesus incarnated was March of 1968. The height of his drug usage and new relationship with Yoko. Btw this has got to be one of the most enjoyable videos I’ve seen. Very informative, entertaining and love how you identify the photos and the songs they were working on. Hope to see more of these videos.
I’ve heard that the original rhythm track for It’s All Too Much included drums, bass, organ, and guitar. John wasn’t known to have played bass until the White Album sessions and George was busy on the organ. The bass part is pretty busy in some spots, very much Paul’s style.
Actually, John played bass a couple of times in 1967. He played bass on the basic track of Fixing A Hole for sure. Possibly on a Fender P or Jazz bass laying around Trident. Paul dubbed over it later but both bass tracks are on the finished track in some variety (to my ears). He also mightve played bass on the basic track of Sgt Peppers (the song). So, its not out of the question he couldve played bass I do agree some parts dont sound John-ish, but the Beatles can play very interesting and amazing parts on their non-main instruments a lot.
@@AcumbaWumba Yes both basses are on the record, which some people mistake for reverb. The bass in It's All Too Much is pretty rough actually, some obvious bum notes in the breakdown part for instance - all the hallmarks of a Lennon bass performance ha. I haven't listened to this episode as yet, but I'm assuming they say Paul plays lead on IATM? I agree, in that case.
It''s a pity there are virtually no photos of their late 66 sessions, apart from a couple arriving at AR on 24th November, and a few of the 'Family way' OST sessions. It''s their key transition period from live to recording band, they recorded their milestone single, they changed their look ...and no photos.
I have a lot of Beatlesque gear. My Casino is a highly modified Coupe. My Hofner is a German 500/2 Club with the cavern spacing, my D-28 is a vintage, my J-160e is a Montana edition with X braces, solid woods and P100. Some of my gear is correct though, my Gretsch Duo Jet is a Harrison signature, I have a white Fender Bass vi, a 62 Vox AC50 mk ii and an AKG C60 mic and some C28b Get Back mics with some short extensions. With your eyes closed you cannot tell the Hofner is a club and my Casino is a Coupe. The Beatles played the Sullivan show on my 11th birthday and I saw them at Candlestick. They changed my life as far as music interest, but I later moved into playing bluegrass.

I think TICKET TO RIDE was the first time PAUL played the casino and electric on a Beatles record..is that right? He did those short 4 bar solos on the end of the bridge/ middle 8 and the licks during the CODA.
I’d need to check about the specifics of when certain guitar parts were recorded, but it looks like parts of Ticket To Ride and Another Girl were recorded on the same day, and then The Night Before was a day or two later, so those would be the first three with Paul’s Casino

John and George’s Casino’s weren’t bought until spring of 1966, so they’re actually ruled out entirely for Day Tripper, it’s possible Paul’s Casino is on it but personally I doubt it
@@GearThereEverywhere That's the typical data found on most books about when John and George bought their Casinos, but i seriously doubt it, the fact that Day Tripper sounds like a Casino makes me think that they bought their ones in the 1965 fall.
in your experience with the Casino (and maybe stratocasters), does the guitar in it's all too much sound like a Casino to you? everytime i see it covered, the bottom three strings are used high up on the fretboard.
this was a fun one-except for the Honey Pie bashing! I love every silly, sloppy note John plays on that song. When we did our White Album shows, I insisted on taking those bits.
The more I look at Paul's I don't think that's a neck stinger on the back of the neck at the headstock. It looks to much like it is sprayed and blended into the finish whereas stingers are usually stronger outlined. Here's my theory and it has to due to the finish of the sides of the body being not in line with pretty much every other vintage Casino. It was refinished before Paul got it. I think the neck snapped at the headstock and then was refinished.
It should be noted that Paul never played lead guitar with the Beatles until February 1965. The Casino was his first new electric guitar. He also only really played lead guitar with the Quarrymen once, at that first gig where he blew it. John reverted to lead guitarist after that until George joined. (As well as the obvious cases, John's lead guitar can be heard on Sweet Little Sixteen on the Star Club tapes and the BBC album and the Stowe School tape!)
Don’t forget there was a period where all three of them played guitar with Stu on bass (and for a short period they all played guitar with no bass, if I remember right this was when they were called Japage 3) I think Paul was always capable of playing lead, isn’t it his guitar heard on Cayenne? But yes on official Beatles recordings the Help! sessions seem to be his first time playing guitar (although he likely did play guitar in rehearsals for Beatles For Sale, with those photos of him on John’s 325 upside down)
John's reincarnation of Jesus revelation was about a year before that photo and the Abbey Road sessions, it was like a couple of weeks after he and George returned from the ashram in Rishikesh. According to Pete Sutton John was extremely depressed and highly disillusioned after his falling out with the Yogi Maharishi, as soon as he got back home he starts taking acid again, heavily, and over the next few weeks has a series of very bad trips, one of which resulted in him calling an emergency meeting with The Beatles and all of the Apple executives to announce that he is Jesus Christ reincarnated and there needs to be a press conference to that effect. No one sees him again until they enter the studio for TWA sessions where he shows up with Yoko and never mentions the Jesus incident again, reborn yet again an entirely new John.

There doesn't appear to be 12-string on the guitar tracks-playing octaves on a 6-string can produce a similar sound (e.g. American Girl by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers)

What specific songs and artists do you think they, especially Ringo, were listening to as they evolved from grooves like I Want to Hold Your Hand to ones like Rain, She Said, Only a Northern Song, et al?
Hi guys, finally an overview of my favorite guitar, but there's something missing that you haven't mentioned or maybe I missed it, being Italian and having translated the video minute by minute, I wanted to know what strings the Beatles used on their Epiphone guitars, I know that in the early years they used Flatwounds on Gretsch and Rickenbacker, and on Casinos?
Actually if you go to Paul’s channel Guitar Gear Connection he has a great video about what strings they used with some amazing evidence. (In summary really the only guitars he could prove had flats were John’s Miami 325 and Rickenbacker 12 string, pretty sure Casinos would have had roundwounds)
His 1958 Rickenbacker 325 had knobs missing on occasion-given that he didn't bother replacing the other ones, it's more likely he just lost it and stuck on whatever was nearby (especially since it now has all gold reflector knobs)
The 325 being resurrected for "And Your Bird Can Sing" seems plausible to me. It sure sounds like the Ricky to my ear. Instead of focusing on what it SHOULD have been, just listen. Then decide.
This may sound like a stupid question but does the hollow body effect anything besides just weight? I'm gonna get a newer fancier guitar in lieu of a squire tele, and a casino is about in my price range (or maybe an even cheaper hollow body, frankly.) Thank you for any comments in advance. : )
I hope somebody made a new nut for macca's casino. the pics on this video show the high E, B & G string slots opened up to facilitate the Low E, A & D strings leaving the High E,B &G strings to wallow aroujnd in the Low E,A & D slots, lol these guys kill me!
Interesting - that old clip of George playing his casino at the end almost sounds like the pickups are out of phase, which raises some questions. It's actually not uncommon for old Gibson guitars (and presumably Epiphones from this period) to have been shipped from the factory like that.
@@GearThereEverywhere yeah I can't honestly say I've ever noticed a sound on any beatles record that i thought sounded like the out of phase sound, but it might be worth looking into. much less one that was likely to have featured George's casino, which I believe was the least recorded out of all 3 epiphone casinos the band had?
keep in mind our Paul is also a songwriter. having different guitars at disposal is desirable for inspiration, different tones, etc. playing more leads may have been way down on the priority list.
I think Geoff Emmerick mentioned that Paul played bass on Old Brown Shoe and that George was so impressed with his lines that he copied the riff for the bridge. But it is definitely Paul playing bass.

If Sir Paul's casino has a 1-11/16 nut and George's is 1-9/16 that's not 2mm (.080") its two sixteenths or 1/8 of an inch. (.125") I won't say huge but it's definitely bigly. I make new nuts for my gibsons that have 1-5/8 nuts to widen the string spacing by 1/16 because its quite noticable. 1/16 would require acclimation before use for sure..
on the topic of john only playing the black strat and epiphone casino through revolver. i feel as though John used his Grestch on and your bird can sing rythm because it sounds so much like paperback writers rythm which is widely known to have the grestch as the rythm guitar. I also think the burried rythm guitar on got to get you into my life is a strat played by john. I don't know which one however. sorry i'm such a nerd when watching these pod casts i love them. but i'm pretty sure there's a 3rd guitar track on i'm only sleeping that plays on the guitar outro. i believe that this is paul on epiphone.

I don't know if this story is true but during the 1960s and 1970s there was a music store on Quentin Rd. In Brooklyn called "Buddy's". The owner did have a picture of himself with John and George up on the wall. He always used to boast that John and George got their Casinos from his store. He said that they got them while they were playing at Shea Stadium. I never believed him but I have searched and searched and not even Andy Babiuk knows where or exactly when they bought their Casinos. Is the story true? I doubt it. Why would they order guitars from a store in Brooklyn? The only thing is he did have that picture of him and the boys on the wall in his store.😮
As a side note it seems really unlikely that they got the Casinos as early as August 1965 at Shea Stadium because they aren’t in the Rubber Soul session photos on November 3rd along with all of their other guitars which were there.
@@GearThereEverywhere It was so so long ago and I was very young. I may have confused what Buddy said. He did say they were in the store while they were in NY to play at Shea. It was probably August 1966. Whether they actually bought or ordered their guitars from him is doubtful as John was already playing his Casino in May 1966 at the New Musical Express Annual Poll-Winners’ All-Star Concert. And they played them on Revolver and on a British show. John is playing it in the Paperback Writer video. Which means they must have gotten them in England a little earlier. And the picture on his wall did not have them with their Casinos. I'm 95% sure they bought them in England somewhere.

But they both played their new Casinos in May 1966 at the NME Poll-Winners Concert but unfortunately Brian Epstein couldn't work out a financial deal so their performance was not allowed to be filmed only them receiving the awards. I bet Lennon left that pickguard bracket there like that because he stripped the screw head because he was not mechanically inclined as he said in an interview. his absent father and uncle never taught him about tools and such. Maybe because his uncle was sick and died.
Doubt it, it's not *that* hard to use a screwdriver-he probably just didn't care about removing it for some time after the pickguard was off (he would've had some input in relocating his Gibson J-160E's pickup, that would have required a screwdriver)

There was somebody in The Beatles who thought about the visuals. They'd painted the Rickenbackers black. They'd got matching J160e's. After the 325 and 360/12 somebody must've thought that blue Stratocasters wouldn't look right and instead used the Casinos that even matched Paul's Hofner a bit. This was the last time that the visuals were considered.
They were stylish guys, the guitars were basically a part of their suits!
Don’t forget the Rocky Strat, the ric bass, and John’s J160 all had psychedelic paint jobs as well as John and George stripping their casinos and Paul his bass

I recently went to the rock and roll hall of fame for the second time this year and both times I spent well over 10 minutes just looking over every aspect of John’s casino. I’d love to hear it plugged in today.

The model designation of the Casino was the E-230. Gibson named its models for their prices. The ES-335 was $335, the ES-125 was $125, etc. So when the Casino was introduced, it was $230

The song they recorded on May 17, 1967, was in fact the first two parts of "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)". The complete first part as well as the entire second part can be heard on "Anthology 2", where you can hear Paul and George clanking away on their Casinos.

Some random scattered thoughts, there is a lot to unpack and I didn't take notes so, going backwards...You Never Give Me Your Money has George playing all the lead, including the coda (outtakes attest to that.) I reckon it's the Casino too. As Sam said, John plays the guitar in Because and if he played the guitar on Oh Darling, as is stated officially, he had to have used George's Casino because that (and Paul's, but we know he didn't play it) is the only guitar that gives the final arpeggio like so (it's also done on the outtakes so it wasn't a spontaneous thing.) George got to play the maracas but never got to open his guitar case: ""With Paul, it was taken to the most ridiculous situations, where I'd open my guitar case and go to get my guitar out and he'd say, 'No, no, we're not doing that yet. We're gonna do a piano track with Ringo, and then we'll do that later.' It got so there was very little to do, other than sit 'round and hear him going, 'Fixing a hole...' with Ringo keeping the time. THEN HE'D OVERDUB...WHATEVER ELSE." Man, I feel left out! My Epiphone is a 1988 Sheraton II - the replacement for a couple of the ‘60s Epi models (solid block down the inside, American-made Bigsby, Dual Humbuckers, guitar made in Korea, headstock says Epiphone by Gibson on it, with the proper logo for each name). But it has a story. At around the 9th fret, it had a little dip in the neck that caused fret buzz! After I sent back TWO of them like this, I called Gibson in Nashvile and actually got through to the V.P. In charge of Quality Control. I told this Southern Gentleman of my trouble with this model. He was very nice about it all, and he told me he personally would go down to the warehouse, and PLAY as many of them as he had to until he found me a good one! A couple of weeks later, UPS delivered my THIRD Epiphone Sheraton II, and this one was GREAT! I still own it, and it plays like no other!
I was able to score a MiK casino about 5 years ago and it’s been my trusted no.1 ever since. I’ve upgraded the pickups and electronics, got locking tuners, and gave it a psychedelic paint job during my time with it. Nothing has ever sounded better through just AC30!

This episode may be one of my favorites from you guys. I have a theory as to why George’s Casino had its Bigsby bar removed. My idea is that whoever was sanding it down found it to be in the way or a nuisance when they were sanding the finish off, and to make it easier, they just sawed the bar off to make the sanding job easier.

Regarding the photo of John wearing the Sandals during the Abbey Road sessions, the spring/summer of 1969 was one of the hottest in the history of the UK and there are photos from those sessions where you see George and Ringo also with Sandals from a different day. Also the incident of John declaring he was Jesus incarnated was March of 1968. The height of his drug usage and new relationship with Yoko. Btw this has got to be one of the most enjoyable videos I’ve seen. Very informative, entertaining and love how you identify the photos and the songs they were working on. Hope to see more of these videos.
I’ve heard that the original rhythm track for It’s All Too Much included drums, bass, organ, and guitar. John wasn’t known to have played bass until the White Album sessions and George was busy on the organ. The bass part is pretty busy in some spots, very much Paul’s style.
Actually, John played bass a couple of times in 1967. He played bass on the basic track of Fixing A Hole for sure. Possibly on a Fender P or Jazz bass laying around Trident. Paul dubbed over it later but both bass tracks are on the finished track in some variety (to my ears). He also mightve played bass on the basic track of Sgt Peppers (the song). So, its not out of the question he couldve played bass
I do agree some parts dont sound John-ish, but the Beatles can play very interesting and amazing parts on their non-main instruments a lot.
@@AcumbaWumba Yes both basses are on the record, which some people mistake for reverb. The bass in It's All Too Much is pretty rough actually, some obvious bum notes in the breakdown part for instance - all the hallmarks of a Lennon bass performance ha. I haven't listened to this episode as yet, but I'm assuming they say Paul plays lead on IATM? I agree, in that case.

On "I'll Follow the Sun" John was playing his 64 J-160E and George his 1963 Gretsch 6119 Tennessean. Paul was playing his 1963 Hofner.
I have a lot of Beatlesque gear. My Casino is a highly modified Coupe. My Hofner is a German 500/2 Club with the cavern spacing, my D-28 is a vintage, my J-160e is a Montana edition with X braces, solid woods and P100. Some of my gear is correct though, my Gretsch Duo Jet is a Harrison signature, I have a white Fender Bass vi, a 62 Vox AC50 mk ii and an AKG C60 mic and some C28b Get Back mics with some short extensions. With your eyes closed you cannot tell the Hofner is a club and my Casino is a Coupe. The Beatles played the Sullivan show on my 11th birthday and I saw them at Candlestick. They changed my life as far as music interest, but I later moved into playing bluegrass.

I think TICKET TO RIDE was the first time PAUL played the casino and electric on a Beatles record..is that right? He did those short 4 bar solos on the end of the bridge/ middle 8 and the licks during the CODA.
I’d need to check about the specifics of when certain guitar parts were recorded, but it looks like parts of Ticket To Ride and Another Girl were recorded on the same day, and then The Night Before was a day or two later, so those would be the first three with Paul’s Casino

Day Tripper wasn't recorded with a Strat, but it was the first song were George used the Casino on a recording along with I'm Looking Through You.
John and George’s Casino’s weren’t bought until spring of 1966, so they’re actually ruled out entirely for Day Tripper, it’s possible Paul’s Casino is on it but personally I doubt it

in your experience with the Casino (and maybe stratocasters), does the guitar in it's all too much sound like a Casino to you? everytime i see it covered, the bottom three strings are used high up on the fretboard.
this was a fun one-except for the Honey Pie bashing! I love every silly, sloppy note John plays on that song. When we did our White Album shows, I insisted on taking those bits.
The more I look at Paul's I don't think that's a neck stinger on the back of the neck at the headstock. It looks to much like it is sprayed and blended into the finish whereas stingers are usually stronger outlined. Here's my theory and it has to due to the finish of the sides of the body being not in line with pretty much every other vintage Casino. It was refinished before Paul got it. I think the neck snapped at the headstock and then was refinished.
It should be noted that Paul never played lead guitar with the Beatles until February 1965. The Casino was his first new electric guitar. He also only really played lead guitar with the Quarrymen once, at that first gig where he blew it. John reverted to lead guitarist after that until George joined. (As well as the obvious cases, John's lead guitar can be heard on Sweet Little Sixteen on the Star Club tapes and the BBC album and the Stowe School tape!)
Don’t forget there was a period where all three of them played guitar with Stu on bass (and for a short period they all played guitar with no bass, if I remember right this was when they were called Japage 3) I think Paul was always capable of playing lead, isn’t it his guitar heard on Cayenne?
But yes on official Beatles recordings the Help! sessions seem to be his first time playing guitar (although he likely did play guitar in rehearsals for Beatles For Sale, with those photos of him on John’s 325 upside down)

John's reincarnation of Jesus revelation was about a year before that photo and the Abbey Road sessions, it was like a couple of weeks after he and George returned from the ashram in Rishikesh. According to Pete Sutton John was extremely depressed and highly disillusioned after his falling out with the Yogi Maharishi, as soon as he got back home he starts taking acid again, heavily, and over the next few weeks has a series of very bad trips, one of which resulted in him calling an emergency meeting with The Beatles and all of the Apple executives to announce that he is Jesus Christ reincarnated and there needs to be a press conference to that effect. No one sees him again until they enter the studio for TWA sessions where he shows up with Yoko and never mentions the Jesus incident again, reborn yet again an entirely new John.
Does anyone know what tuners George had on his epiphone? I have a Japanese elitist and wish to upgrade. I think he had Grover’s? Gold or silver?

There doesn't appear to be 12-string on the guitar tracks-playing octaves on a 6-string can produce a similar sound (e.g. American Girl by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers)

This is fabulous - starting to binge them all. *Here's my question for the podcasters:* - the single question I'd ask if I could ask any Beatle any question: Going back to 1965 to 1967, Ringo and the Beatles in general started using funk grooves - 16ths and swung 16ths. What specific songs and artists do you think they, especially Ringo, were listening to as they evolved from grooves like I Want to Hold Your Hand to ones like Rain, She Said, Only a Northern Song, et al?

Hi guys, finally an overview of my favorite guitar, but there's something missing that you haven't mentioned or maybe I missed it, being Italian and having translated the video minute by minute, I wanted to know what strings the Beatles used on their Epiphone guitars, I know that in the early years they used Flatwounds on Gretsch and Rickenbacker, and on Casinos?
Actually if you go to Paul’s channel Guitar Gear Connection he has a great video about what strings they used with some amazing evidence. (In summary really the only guitars he could prove had flats were John’s Miami 325 and Rickenbacker 12 string, pretty sure Casinos would have had roundwounds)
I'm pretty sure the replaced volume knob on John's guitar was because his eyesight was so poor!
His 1958 Rickenbacker 325 had knobs missing on occasion-given that he didn't bother replacing the other ones, it's more likely he just lost it and stuck on whatever was nearby (especially since it now has all gold reflector knobs)

The 325 being resurrected for "And Your Bird Can Sing" seems plausible to me. It sure sounds like the Ricky to my ear. Instead of focusing on what it SHOULD have been, just listen. Then decide.

This may sound like a stupid question but does the hollow body effect anything besides just weight? I'm gonna get a newer fancier guitar in lieu of a squire tele, and a casino is about in my price range (or maybe an even cheaper hollow body, frankly.)

Yeah, the hollow body makes the guitar a lot more prone to feedback, which in Paul’s case, was something desirable

I hope somebody made a new nut for macca's casino. the pics on this video show the high E, B & G string slots opened up to facilitate the Low E, A & D strings leaving the High E,B &G strings to wallow aroujnd in the Low E,A & D slots, lol these guys kill me!

Interesting - that old clip of George playing his casino at the end almost sounds like the pickups are out of phase, which raises some questions. It's actually not uncommon for old Gibson guitars (and presumably Epiphones from this period) to have been shipped from the factory like that.

@@GearThereEverywhere yeah I can't honestly say I've ever noticed a sound on any beatles record that i thought sounded like the out of phase sound, but it might be worth looking into. much less one that was likely to have featured George's casino, which I believe was the least recorded out of all 3 epiphone casinos the band had?
keep in mind our Paul is also a songwriter. having different guitars at disposal is desirable for inspiration, different tones, etc. playing more leads may have been way down on the priority list.
I’m inclined to think Paul played the higher octave on The Night Before, purely because in the movie George is playing the lower octave.
I think Geoff Emmerick mentioned that Paul played bass on Old Brown Shoe and that George was so impressed with his lines that he copied the riff for the bridge. But it is definitely Paul playing bass.

The original Epiphone company is actually older than Gibson itself, originally being founded in 1873.
Did they ever play semi hollow casinos?
Do you mean like an Epiphone Riviera or a Gibson ES-335? As far as I know Casinos have always been fully hollow
If Sir Paul's casino has a 1-11/16 nut and George's is 1-9/16 that's not 2mm (.080") its two sixteenths or 1/8 of an inch. (.125") I won't say huge but it's definitely bigly. I make new nuts for my gibsons that have 1-5/8 nuts to widen the string spacing by 1/16 because its quite noticable. 1/16 would require acclimation before use for sure..
on the topic of john only playing the black strat and epiphone casino through revolver. i feel as though John used his Grestch on and your bird can sing rythm because it sounds so much like paperback writers rythm which is widely known to have the grestch as the rythm guitar.
I also think the burried rythm guitar on got to get you into my life is a strat played by john. I don't know which one however.

Ooh interesting, I did a cover of I’m Only Sleeping a while back and hadn’t even considered that that second guitar in the background could be Paul, definitely something to look into more! And Your Bird Can Sing definitely needs a deep dive from us since the Casino, the Gretsch, the Black Strat, and maybe even the 325 are all possible contenders
I don't know if this story is true but during the 1960s and 1970s there was a music store on Quentin Rd. In Brooklyn called "Buddy's". The owner did have a picture of himself with John and George up on the wall. He always used to boast that John and George got their Casinos from his store. He said that they got them while they were playing at Shea Stadium. I never believed him but I have searched and searched and not even Andy Babiuk knows where or exactly when they bought their Casinos. Is the story true? I doubt it. Why would they order guitars from a store in Brooklyn? The only thing is he did have that picture of him and the boys on the wall in his store.😮

As a side note it seems really unlikely that they got the Casinos as early as August 1965 at Shea Stadium because they aren’t in the Rubber Soul session photos on November 3rd along with all of their other guitars which were there.

It was so so long ago and I was very young. I may have confused what Buddy said. He did say they were in the store while they were in NY to play at Shea. It was probably August 1966. Whether they actually bought or ordered their guitars from him is doubtful as John was already playing his Casino
in May 1966 at the New Musical Express Annual Poll-Winners’ All-Star Concert. And they played them on Revolver and on a British show. John is playing it in the Paperback Writer video. Which means they must have gotten them in England a little earlier. And the picture on his wall did not have them with their Casinos. I'm 95% sure they bought them in England somewhere.

Found footage of The Beatles on Top of The Pops. I think June 1966. John and George playing their Casinos. But they both played their new Casinos in May 1966 at the NME Poll-Winners Concert but unfortunately Brian Epstein couldn't work out a financial deal so their performance was not allowed to be filmed only them receiving the awards. But they did play their Casinos their first.

John took the finish off his sunburst. No idea why, but the natural one he had later is the original guitar from the mid 60's.

A natural Casino made in Korea, a 1965 Sunburst limited edition (the one that they went to the Dakota to study) that had the black washer, a Sunburst Inspired by made in China (that was the worst) and the one I own now, a beautiful Sunburst Elitist made in Japan, assembled in the USA, with Grover tuners and a beautiful dark brown back and back of neck and back of head like John's casino.

I had 4 different model Casinos. A natural made in Korea, a 1965 limited edition Sunburst (the one that they went to the Dakota to study and measure) which was made in USA, An Inspired Sunburst Casino made in China, and the one I currently have that I consider the best Casino made, my Sunburst Elitist Casino. Made in Japan and set-up in America, and contains American made parts such as the pickups. Body is 5-ply maple, Gibson P-90 pickups, and nickel hardware and a beautiful dark brown back and neck. I will post a video of me playing it so you can see it.

I bet Lennon left that pickguard bracket there like that because he stripped the screw head because he was not mechanically inclined as he said in an interview. his absent father and uncle never taught him about tools and such. Maybe because his uncle was sick and died.
Doubt it, it's not *that* hard to use a screwdriver-he probably just didn't care about removing it for some time after the pickguard was off (he would've had some input in relocating his Gibson J-160E's pickup, that would have required a screwdriver)
