    He's been so unbelievably consistent it's truly a shame he doesn't get talked about more. But that's the life of a relief pitcher.

    • @parkercrossland410
      @parkercrossland410 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Part of the reason why is because he isn't one of those guys that is "the closer" wherever he goes. Saves are what gets relievers public recognition, and the last time he spent a full year as a teams closer was 2016. Robertson, Steve Cishek, Joaquin Benoit, and Tony Watson all had the same issue. Teams seem mostly pretty averse to having older pitchers as closers if they weren't already a closer the years prior.

    Back in 2009 I was a young yankee fan witnessing the first and only (so far) yankee world series win. My favorite player was David Robertson specifically because he was just as good as Mariano in my eyes but not the classic basic player everyone said was their favorite. I was devastated when he left in 2016. In 2019 I started my time at, coincidentally, the university of Alabama, my first purchase was a David Robertson Bama Baseball Shirt. In 2020 when he was attempting to make his comeback, he threw a session at Sewell Thomas Stadium at the university with scouts in attendance so naturally, I attempted to get in and watch it. The closest I could see was from the student section hill in right field. After the session I tried to see if I could find him after, but I couldn't. The best thing I got was him pointing me out in right field wearing his jersey. Was one of the coolest moments of my life, he is a hall of famer in my eyes and I will always have a fantastic view of not only him as a player but as a person as well

    I'm not saying he learned the cutter from Mariano Rivera, but I'm also not saying he didn't. On all seriousness super interesting career and honestly if he can have 3 or 4 more seasons of good production I think he has a real shot at being an HOF, in big part because the later he delay his retirement and give more time for old Baseball Writers of America to retire the higher his chances of joining, because even now he may already be a pretty interesting case.

    It's a pretty quintessential example of closers bias. In terms of his career footprint he's very close to the elite closers of this generation in Kimbril, Janson, and Chapman. All of them seem pretty likely to make the hall of fame, or at the very least get close, I doubt that Robertson will even crack 5% to stay on the ballet :/. Worst part is it's not even is fault that he doesn't have saves, he spent over 430 innings, that's half of his career, pitching behind either the hardest throwing player ever, or the GOAT.

      Irrelevant, players who play 20 years will always make a lot of money its just another counting stat. Especially since he negotiates short term deals so his market value constantly updates to follow the upward trend of salaries.
      The idea that one of the best pitchers in the history of relievers is not being appreciated as such has nothing to do with money. If that were true, contract value above average would be a hall of fame consideration.
