  • In 1977 Chelsea Headhunters were running riot up and down the country, taking ends and running amok. They were eventually banned by the police from attending their last match of the season. But in February, they paid a visit to Bolton's Burnden Park. What happened next is the stuff of legend.

It wasn’t Headhunters, it was The North Stand back then. Chelsea took major liberties this day in what was an important game for promotion.

@terencedye8542 The whole Bolton end scattered when the small amount of Chelsea infiltrated them, so amazingly this statement is true! I saw it with my own eyes! I cannot recall us btw coming across the pitch though for some reason and think we left the ground ten minutes early to enter the home end that way! We must have filled half their end by then!

@user-mh9cu1tj8i The same happened at Coventry around 1980, I was with the mob, although it was against my wishes, and I was possibly petrified or certainly at the back of the mob at best! We had a bad reputation back then when we supposedly had no fans, though, if you believe the tripe you hear from modernday fans!.

Quite telling that "Mike" thinks the Wanderers lost 1-0. Probably not his only misremembrance. Local geography clarification for "Stephen" - the "Great" in "Great Lever" is like the "Great" in "Great Britain" i.e. doesn't reflect delusions of grandeur. There are areas of Bolton called Little Lever and Darcy Lever. From what I recall, the problem that day for the home mob was that most of the handier bovver boys had recently made the Embankment their home. So there wasn't much left in the Lever end for Chelsea to "take". Didn't see anything happening on Bradshawgate or Manchester Road before the game. There were some early brick and bottle exchanges over the fence down the middle of the Embankment. The depiction of the Lever End debacle and subsequent pitch exodus is pretty accurate.

Why would anyone still be interested in this sort of bollocks? Anyone who took part is at least in their late sixties. Give over.

Chelsea only ever good at taking on minnows in the lower leagues, most of their firm were kids. They always got battered by Arsenal, spurs and West Ham. So what if you can take Boltons end..

Chelsea in the 70s caused trouble every where. That's why their games away were all ticket or they were banned a lot better mob than Man Utd when they played at Forest. Having said that around 1980 West Ham brought a huge mob of between 3 to 4000 that was the only time I ever saw Forest not able to get together after a game West ham were every where out side the ground.

Not sure you're right there Ray! We took the north bank for starters and they admit we've had the biggest away following at their ground. Never saw them at the bridge either! West Ham away, no away fans there and 81 onwards we took huge numbers to UP, helped with giving away fans more allocation. Finally, Spurs, and they never came near the shed, we always took massed ranks there. Get over it, most neutral fans rate us tops. Quite an accurate account on this game, as I was there!👌

They took the lever end early and scattered the few what was in it
Bolton kicked the gates in and chased Chelsea across the lever end, but Chelsea stayed in all through the game surrounding by the old bill bokton tried to take it back but we're held back by Chelsea and the old bill so you have to give credit to Chelsea. As for taking liberties its nit totally true .Chelsea brought one of the best mobs ever to burnden but not the best .Man u in 74 best ever and the only team ever to take the lever end proper they brought over 20 000 that day and was total mayhem .

Most of that is a load of bollocks. I'm a Bolton fan and we've never had 3,000 lads.
Maybe 300-400 lads at our peak like most provincial firms back then. Even Man Utd would struggle to have a 3,000 strong firm.
77 was a couple years before my time but i know the stories.
Chelsea had a go, but was a 50 50 result from what older lads tell me, but Newcastle in 81 and Sheff Utd in 83 had better results here.
Burnden was hostile for away fans.

Think that was 83 where a big Chelsea contingent sneaked into the Burnden Stand. So they were overlooking the Burnden Terrace home crew. Smart move. Like a cat taking up a higher position than its rival.

Went to bolton with hull the previous season,we only took about 300 and got a right kicking, you had to go down a wide alleyway to get back to the coaches and there were loads of them waiting to ambush us. Also when chelsea came to hull in 77 it was going off all over the place they didnt take our end ( bunkers hill ) though.
