I was at that game. Not sure what the "writers" are talking about. First of all these firms were not called Headhunters or Seaburn Casuals back in 1975. Most away fans arrived by coach and parked up at the harbour/sea front. There appeared to be between 500 to 800 Chelsea fans in the Roker End, most of whom had been escorted by the police to the back of the Roker End. There was a good squad of Sunderland fans in the Roker End to greet the Chelsea lads, but it is bollox to say they were the Seaburn Casuals, we were from all over the NE. It did get a tad feisty in the Roker End, the police were not quite skilled up - primarily handbags - running at & back again - bit of nasty chanting, first game of the season and a good 2-1 win. Fantasy writing on football hooliganism rife for some !

Sunderland was a hell of a rough place to visit in the 70's. You needed a big mob to take them on but I can fully believe Chelsea did. They did similar in the league cup , midweek, in the 80's.

Nope. They didn't in 1974 and they didn't in 1985.... Oh, and in the 1992 league Cup midweek match, they got battered as well. Panic all over around Roker Baths Road.

"Chelsea trying to get revenge at the return fixture" should give people a much better idea about what really happened overall that day. Let's deal with the coaches first as they weren't even mentioned on this video. In those days most away fans arrived by coach and parked along the seafront at Seaburn. This is where the majority of sunderland lads waited from early doors and Chelsea took a proper hiding before the game and scattered everywhere, some probably not even going to the ground as it was so on top and dangerous to go through those streets in small numbers. People say after the game they were shown no mercy but i disagree about that, many who ran were chased across the beach and only had to go into shallow water to escape. They were left alone after this but could've been chased further if there was hatred. As for the train lot i find it hard to believe there would be a huge sunderland mob up at the station before the game as its right out of the way and the Bluebell Pub they mention has never been a hooligan venue. They basically took the main/only route from the station to the ground and then got bundled down to the away (Roker) end by the Fulwell lads. Inside the ground there was lots of fighting (some of it shown on photos and videos). To be fair to chelsea although they definitely came off worse the ones in the away section did manage to stay there for the full game with a police barrier. After the match the train lot definitely came off second best as there was no element of surprise and mobs of sunderland were getting stuck in all the way back to the station. Again, very fair play to the few hundred chelsea who did limp back to the station but their heroic efforts would be in stark contrast to their train counterparts who got picked off/split up/battered. Anyway, unlike the majority of teams back then chelsea did turn up and although loads of them took a hiding their main firm were game but had nowhere near the numbers it would've taken to turn sunderland over at home back then. All good things come to an end though and the return fixture at Stamford Bridge(just a few days before Christmas) was every bit as on top for sunderland.

@@philwise872 I was one of the SAFC mob who travelled down to Brighton that season. Plod must have been expecting bother as we were all searched before we got off the bus, then searched again outside the ground, then searched again as soon as we got through the turnstiles. A lad off our bus was wearing pit boots...with highly polished steel toe-caps. He had to remove them at the turnstile, and collect them after the match... but they'ed went missing!:) Good days!
