- In this week's vlog we are eating more British food! We ordered some British snacks and candy online for a UK taste test. Watch two foreigners try British snacks and candy for the first time!
After returning home from the UK we missed the British flavors so we decided to order a box of snacks and candy from the British Corner Shop website. Especially Brandon, who is from Canada, hadn't tried almost any of these items before. We tried British tea and biscuits, UK crisps (Quavers and Twiglets), chocolates and sweets (Cadbury and Fry's Turkish Delight), Ribena and unique British spreads like Marmite and Branston. We even tried some mince pies and lit a Christmas pudding on fire.

I grew up with fry’s Turkish delight, and honestly I love it, the jelly is flavoured with rose btw
We thought it was rose, but it didn't seem to be listed on the package! And definitely not in the ingredients. I guess the rose must be included in the "flavourings" portion of the ingredients list. Haha.
My favourite chocolate. Always have in the fridge.
@@djgrant8761 Anja was reading Reddit posts about Fry's, and one person said they put them in the freezer before eating. They don't freeze, but it gives the jelly a firmer texture. I think that would be better, to be honest. 🤔

As a Britt I can say every Christmas I woke up to a Terry's chocolate orange and a Clementine in my Christmas stocking because honestly is Christmas really complete with a couple orange's? 😂
Hahaha. Well, my mom certainly agreed with that! Always clementines in my stocking as well, and we used to get the cheap little dollar peel-off lotto tickets as well. Chocolate, fruit and childhood gambling. What else do you need, really. 😂
I absolutely love Turkish Delight ❤ the reason the twirl seemed “powdery” is because it’s seized chocolate, that’s why it’s crumbly. Flakes are the same x
Interesting. I thought chocolatiers usually avoid seized chocolate. I think I had a Flake in the past and liked it a bit better.
You should have put some of the custard on the Christmas pudding 🇬🇧❤️
We did after we turned off the camera. It was good with the custard too 😊
When i was a child my stocking/pillow case we always got an orange, mr matey bubble bath, flannel and chocolate coins without fail! We never had a chocolate orange in our stockings but its my favorite chocolate and every year now my sisters buy me 1 each 🤣🙌🏻

Yes, even the things we didn't quite like mostly grew on us after we filmed the video two weeks ago. I (Anja) have been eating Marmite every morning 😂. Marmite: You can use as a stock in stews and soups

Teacakes aren't filled with marshmallow, they're filled with Italian Meringue 😊
Is the difference that they don't have gelatin? Tunnock's calls it "soft marshmallow", though 😊

@@wherearewe-yt I’m one of those weird people that stores chocolate in the fridge. I always have Turkish Delight in the fridge. A lot of people don’t like the perfume taste but I love it. I also enjoy eating Musk sticks. You mentioned Jaffa Cakes, in Australia we have Jaffas. Jaffas are little chocolate balls encased in a thin orange shell.
@@djgrant8761 We actually don't even mind rose flavor. We've had some rose flavored desserts in the Middle East, Turkey, and in North Africa - and have actually quite enjoyed them. But they were all with pastries, and the rose flavour often came from rose water or syrup. I think the combination with the chocolate throws it off for us!
Those Jaffa balls look interesting. If we make it back to Australia, we'll have to make a snack video and try em'!

I'd love to send you a box of UK stuff if you ever want to do a candy/food swap! I adore Tunnocks products, a very old fashioned British brand :) you guys are so great to watch! Was very happy to see people trying Marmite and actually buttering the toast first, though I love my Marmite super salty so I'd have it even thicker than you had it. There's so many Marmite products here, like Marmite cheese, hummus, peanut butter, crackers, ricecakes, nuts! AND I was so so excited to see the mince pies/christmas pudding, as I am a huge fan of both (unlike all my family and friends)! I have my pies plain and cold, but always heat the pudding. If you get a fancy pudding, it should have nuts in it!

And funny you mentioned it..we ALSO have a Marmite snack video coming out a few weeks from now, where we tried a bunch of different types of Marmite spreads and snacks. We grew to love it after this first snack video, and now we can't get enough of it. Hahaha.

Marmite is stuffed full of B vitamins, I love dipping buttery toast top with marmite in a sweet cup of tea, I always have done since I was a kid and I still do, you can do that with coffee too, yummy!
Maybe we'll have to try that! But maybe not with the Toast and Jam tea we bought. That would probably be pretty gross. 😂
I'm a brit, I never heard of Toast and Jam tea I wouldn't use it, try the toast with PG Tips, Yorkshire Tea or similar english black tea, one or two teaspoons of sugar and add milk, fold your marmite toast in half, dunk and eat it whole
Little tip for you, in winter run the jar of Marmite under hot water for a minute. It makes spreading it so much easier, you'll rip the toast up otherwise. Branston pickle is best in a sandwich with a mature or vintage cheddar.
One tip we've been using from the comments section, has been mixing the marmite directly with the butter in a little ramekin before hand. Spreads evenly, and easily! We went from not liking it at first, to eating it at breakfast every day. Ha!
The best flavoured cheese&onion crisps ever were KP from the eighties in the yellow bag,the flavour was incredible and even now I get flashbacks about them,so when they invent time travel you know where my first stop is going to be😊
I think we all have snacks like that from our youth that no longer exist.

There's a chance that the Cadbury you got in Canada was made by Hershey, which is not as good as the original.
We're heading back to Canada soon, but we'll be in the UK before we do. Maybe I'll have to grab some of the Cadbury bars from the UK that we have in Canada, and do a side by side comparison! Haha.

yeah so the thing with Marmite is make sure you put looooooooooads of butter on your toast first then apply the marmite so that it blends
We actually have a Marmite video coming out in the future. We tried a few different Marmite spreads and a bunch of Marmite snacks. We've fallen in love with it since this video! 😅
Why are none of us Brits talking about the TEA? ‘Toast and Jam’?! Pass. Tea without milk?! HARD PASS 😂 I’m an English boi and have never seen toast and jam tea, nor would I drink it! Still not seen a video of a foreigner doing English breakfast tea properly 😭

We've had tea in a few of our other videos, and have tried a lot of the more common teas like Early Grey, and English Breakfast before. We wanted to try something that sounded a bit more.."unusual". 😂

Top tip with the crisps … give them a good shake … gets all the coating that’s come off back to the crisp ..
We have pom bears in England.. they come in 2 different flavours
I realised that afterwards 😅. I (Anja) always thought they were German because I grew up eating them. But they seem to exist in other countries, like Hungary, too. They're definitely a nostalgic flavour to me. Thanks for watching!
I quite like Fry's Turkish Delight but it's not a patch on the real stuff. Pistachio or honey flavour REAL Turkish delight is the food of the gods.
Agreed! We were living in Istanbul for about three months, and we became absolutely obsessed. The rose flavor is still good, but the varieties with nuts were incredible!
When you're back in the UK you've got to try Scottish tablet and maybe Edinburgh rock, it's not anything like the traditional seaside rock. If you've never heard of rock I suggest looking it up. It's as British as you can get. Also try Branston original as it's more chunky.

Terrys chocolate orange was definitely a stocking filler in my house hold growing up.(UK)
That's super interesting! I guess it must have been something brought over from those immigrating to Canada from the UK.
I never really questioned many of these things growing up, but each time we're back in the UK, I always discover a new food, snack, or tradition that I grew up with is actually British.
To be fair, both sides of my family ultimately came from the UK if you go back enough- so I suppose it makes sense. 😂

@@joshtiley7008 They actually did have the Terry's Mint version in that British shop we had visit in person, but we already had the mint Twirl, so we wanted to get the OG flavor, especially since I hadn't had it in ages.

Anja was reading a reddit page all about the Fry's Turkish Delight debate. It's a hate or love it thing for sure. 😅
It’s divides opinions just like marmite but I love it. Turkish delight from turkey comes in all sorts of fancy flavours and products like nuts or coconut are added to create different textures with different appearances but they also do the plain type which is similar in texture to the fry’s Turkish delight.
Twiglets like Marmite are made with Yeast Extract, so have a very very savory strong umami taste - That is what divides opinions on these products. Some people love the taste, whilst others hate it.. there doesnt seem to be an inbetween. The best way to enjoy twiglets is with a beer or ale, the two flavor compliment each other. Both products however have health benefits as they are full of fibre, protien and B Vitamins
We actually grew to love both Twiglets, and Marmite in a short amount of time. 😂
Marmite is great when it's not the "prominent" flavor. With the proper amount of Marmite VS Butter, it really shines! I particularly love grilled cheese with a marmite/butter mixture spread on both sides of the bread before toasting. Anja uses it on her toast every day now as well.
Twiglets just have such a satisfying crunch, that we kept on craving them after a while. Would 100% buy both again. If we lived in the UK, we'd always have Marmite in the house now. Hahaha..

That was a good honest review ,nice to see somone with adult palettes ,top tip pop the jar for 5 seconds in the microwave and it melts marmite into a runny easy to spread thin film , doesnt hurt the marmite.
We try all foods with an open mind! From marmite, to sheep's head or rooster testicle. We try it all. 😂
We really enjoyed everything. I (Brandon) am going to give marmite another go. We've received so many interesting tips on how to use it, that I've gotta try some of them. Anja is already a convert. Haha.
Just start in tiny amounts , it's also a flavour enhancer so makes anything you drink while eating taste better , proper Yorkshire tea and marmite toast is a thing of beauty
I love Marmite XO has been matured four times longer than standard Marmite to create a fuller-bodied, stronger flavoured
Maybe we need to try that for the next snack video. We'd never even heard of it! Had no idea there were multiple types of marmite. Apparently there are special editions versions some times as well?

Try the Twiglets with a dip, like Hummus, will take the edge off the bitterness.

We tried it with cheese while filming this video, but it didn't make it in the actual video. It's even better with cheese!
Fry's Turkish Delight is amazing, but most definitely its own thing - its nothing like traditional Turkish delight (which we also get here) so its definitely a bit of a misnomer
Of all the things we tried this day, it's the one thing we still don't like..haha.
We both grew to love marmite after figuring out what type of ratio works for us. We're just not a fan of that jelly, chocolate combo. According the the comments section, it certainly does have a fanbase!

Quavers are a weird one,you never think when you want some crisps that quavers will be your first choice but when someone gives them to you they are addictive to eat and one bag is never enough.
We actually ended up liking them quite a bit in the end! But you're totally right. Don't know that we'd necessarily choose them over other crisps.

If you have digestive biscuits. Dark chocolate are the best , even better when you dunk in tea . The chocolate melts 😍
It didn't make it into the video, but I mentioned how my parents are both major tea drinks. My dad always has biscuits with his tea, and we always had digestives in the house. I'll have to grab some when we get back to Canada, and get to dunking!
My brother always considered me weird because I put Branston (only chunky the smooth stuff is awful) on fish and chips. When he was dating his now wife they had fish and chips with her parents. She actually put Branston on her fish and chips. Her parents apologised thinking my brother would find it strange but he told them his brother was the other British person who had this strange habit😁

You don't put milk into fruit teas,only breakfast teas whick are brown in colour till you add the milk and sugar if you want to add them.
The Toast & Jam tea is not a fruit tea. It's a blend of black teas with flavoring. So the milk actually works really well. We've been drinking it like that now. Thanks for watching!

Tunnocks tea cakes aren't really with tea yeah... And the coconut tunnocks I've never even heard of 😂😅 the best tunnocks and the most common are the tunnocks wafers and tunnocks tea cakes. Hob nobs are my favourite dunking biscuit. The sticky toffee flavour though to me is far too sweet. The original just... Chocolate hobnobs is where it is at! And please... The not dunking them is a newbie/rookie mistake 😂 I can see you asking others in the comment section 'doesn't that make them fall apart'... Yes but if held in for short enough time No. Lol 😂 chocolate hobnobs/ sticky toffee when held in for a short time melts the chocolate a little and warms up the toffee in sticky toffees case... And voila a transformation occurs. Levelling up the biscuit to a whole new level

Twiglets are awful... Haha sorry... But yeah twiglets are marmite in flavour which marmite is a divisive subject in the UK etc their branding says it in fact. 'You either love it or hate it!' and I... I am a hater 😂 marmite is awful too to me hahaha
I was like wow when you had the branston pickle raw as is 😂 like nooooo branston pickle is to go with cheese and the cheese is not optional... Either branston with cheese sandwich or a toastie! Or on cheese and crackers or it's served sometimes on a ploughman's lunch which is a salad with ham and cheese here in the uk the branston is usually served to the side or in a little pot or ramekin etc 😊 it's especially good on salty things... The sweet with the sour and salty is amazing... Like red onion marmalade with blue cheese or brie! The tangy with creamy and salty is a phenomenal combo ❤
Ribena is super sweet and you can buy it in cordial form to mix with water! But you can buy still or fizzy like you had for when on the go in the day etc 😊
Terry's chocolate orange in you're stocking each?!!? Wow your parents were generous... Usually there's one at Christmas and it's shared between the whole family 😂
Turkish delight is another divisive thing... Like marmite and twiglets 😂 one thing is Turkish delight isn't British technically... Key is in the name... Turkey 😂😊
And twirl is banging the mint choc version not so much 😂 but then I dislike mint chocolate stuff I won't lie 😂 and double decker is amazing... Hands down one of the best chocolate bars in existence 😂 and fruit pastilles are fantastically good!
And lord knows Christmas pudding is awful too 😂 you picked out all the things I don't like 😂 and I'm not picky at all rest assured 😂 and mince pies is usually served with proper double cream or we will do a Bailey's cream or brandy cream or whisky cream with... Christmas is a time of excess so we usually go that much further... Squirty cream is okay but yeah... Mince pies with brandy butter is a favourite of mine 😂😂 and you can use any brandy or rum or whisky etc for the burning alcohol on the chocolate pudding and nah it's not a crime to put cream on etc... why didn't you eat them with the custard?!!? 😂😅😮

Off camera, I said to Anja that I think the original Tunnock's without coconut would be better. The best part about them is that nice chew, and the coconut just kind of ruins the experience a bit by falling all over the place and making a mess. Still good though!
So do most people add milk to their tea then!? Hahaha. I feel like dipping biscuits into tea without milk, would almost be like dipping them into hot water, would it not? We will definitely have to try some different biscuits next time. There are so many we missed out on. But we loved those sticky toffee pudding Hobnobs!

My mom always LOADED our stockings. Tangerines, and a Terry's Chocolate orange were always a given on Christmas morning.
I agree with the Double Decker. I absolutely love them! We're visiting the UK again soon, and I am going to bring some home to my family when we visit Canada.
The mince pies were actually really good, but served with Bailey's cream sounded freakin' amazing. The pudding was okay. Anja liked it better than me. Hahaha.

@@wherearewe-yt yeah... So we put milk in our tea. Black tea like black coffee is for sociopathic people 🤣 and very fair... Yeah more twiglets and marmite for you then as I'm not consuming/partaking 🤣 when you get taste tests of 'british' food I swear the videos always put in atleast one of the 'controversial' food items we have... There is always at least twiglets or marmite or jellied eels or mushy peas in there. Because they know they will get either outrage comments or people arguing in the comments about how British food is bad etc 🙄
And yeah tunnocks wafers are so good 🤤 and yeah BeardMeatsFood knows his stuff for sure 😊
Christmas is usually excessive in everything to be fair... When I say about the Terry's shared between a family... Usually because there's a ton of sweets and chocolate and snacks too... So 1 shared is usually enough 😊
Oh and yeah... Traditionally at Christmas we also have brandy snaps (they don't contain brandy anymore though) which are like a caramel cylinder... And we will pipe brandy cream or Bailey's cream etc into the middle of 😊
Fruit gums same brand as the pastilles are the boys gummy wise 👍🏻. But be warned they remove loose fillings 🤣

Oh yea big difference they're soft as 💩 comparable to proper rowntrees fruit gums, accept no imitation. Used to be made with gelatine but they may be halalificated by now not too sure 🤷🏻♂️

Both spreads are great with cheese. Try that marmite but as Grilled cheese.
Branston is a sandwich and not toast based topping. One guy ftom a band from Boston called King's of nothing loved the stuff at a friend's house in London after a gig. British drinking tea and coffee after midnight with Boston-Irish punks....

the english are not notorious for strong flavored chip/crisps. but we do have a few...Tyrells do have some very strong and creative flavours.
We've tried a few flavors of Tyrrells, and we really love them. Their veg crisps are delicious as well.
They have a few interesting looking flavors that we've never had, that we'd love to try!
my favorite chocolate is most cadburys chocolate but the best one is marvelous creations by cadbury which is normal chocolate with jelly beans and popping candy

The Branston is a sandwich pickle spread but can be eaten as a side with some meals. I love it on all sandwiches and I eat it a lot if I have a side salad with a meal. Keep up the great videos. :)

Not sure, but Cadbury in Canada is apparently made by "Mondelez Canada". It's definitely tasty and they have a few Canada only Cadbury bars that don't exist in the US:

That was a fun alternative to the tour videos! But why couldn’t you fly with the snacks; why did you have to order them?
When we travel to the UK, we typically only take a small backpack because that's all the budget airlines allow. We are never usually there for more than a few days at a time!
We we be back in the UK soon though, so if this video takes off, we may do a (smaller) part 2! We will also potentially have a UK fast food video, and will have some videos from Northern Ireland coming up. That'll probably be early April when we are able to release that stuff.
Twiglets are better dipped in cream cheese and other dips.
It's funny you mention that - we actually dipped them in a blue cheese cream cheese spread later on, and it was great. We actually ended up really loving the Twiglets, even on their own! They have such a satisfying crunch, we kept going back to them. We'd buy them again for sure!

Walkers was its own company until being bought out by Pepsi Co (Lays) in fact they were better before, my gran used to sell them because of the freshly cooked taste which they no longer have, just the generic crisp now

oooooff..personally I would never ever, ever, ever, EVER eat branston pickle with just a loaf of bread on its own. it's like having a party with only one guest, won't be any fun .
my pref would be to get a good couple of slices of bread (pref whole-wheat) put a little slab of extra mature cheddar in there and a nice slice of honey-glazed ham, then you spread your pickle on and boom, instant culinary ambrosia. I mean at the very least you have to eat it with a decent bit of cheese to really get the most out of it.
We're releasing a new UK snack video today. One of the items we try is the Branston Piccalilli. We took the advice of everyone, and ate it with a slice of cheese as well. We want to make sure we get the full proper taste, so we tried not to get too fancy with it! Haha.
fun fact the germans and english get on well (despite the fact we complai nabout each other a lot and have a lot of banter ) but our dislike of each other comes from us beign so similar to each other and wont admit it lol because the "english" where a germanic tribe originally so have a lot of similarities
True, I made a lot of English friends, and of course, Scottish ones since I went to university there. I always felt completely at home there. However, one year the Football World Cup was going on when I was working with lots of people from England and they had a lot of things to say to me about it 😂. I love how British people always joke around with sarcasm and "take the piss". Germans are similar in that way as we are quite direct. I've lived in North America for a few years as well and there people tend to not always have the same humour, haha.

Make sure the toast is hot, loads of butter.... Loads..... Then a pea size amount of marmite, dapped/spread as best you can.
Anja is already a marmite convert! We actually realized we were nearly out of butter when we went to film the marmite scene, so we didn't put nearly enough on. I'm going to give it another go, now that we've got some. I haven't tried it since! Haha.

@@wherearewe-yt for a beginner, a good way to get an even spread is to mix a small amount of Marmite with some softened butter in a dish and then spread that mixture on the hot toast. Personally I recommend topping that with freshly sliced tomato, which adds some moisture and a touch of sweetness to balance out the salty umami of the Marmite.
I feel the need to report back with my marmite findings. I mixed marmite and butter together, microwaved it for a few seconds so it could spread, then make a marmite grilled cheese (as someone else suggested). It was amazing. Hahaha.
I LOVE marmite!! I'm lucky enough to have grown up eating Cadburys, Galaxy and Milka so Hersheys acting makes me want to vomit, I think the same goes for everyone I know haha 😂A warm mince pie with brandy butter/custard 👌👌 (also in the UK, we just call chocolate 'chocolate', not candy or sweets 😊

Did you cook the Christmas pudding first?
We put it in the microwave for a few minutes as instructed on the box, but honestly, it was probably not long enough 😅. Is it supposed to be piping hot or just warm?
@@wherearewe-yt yes, it should come out piping hot with steam rising from it otherwise it will be dry because the suet (a type of buttery fat) will not have melted. Traditionally it was steamed or left in boiling water to cook, but microwaving is fine too. Christmas pudding is a love or loath type of dessert, I love it especially with custard. PS first time watching your videos, great reaction video.

Haha..we've had normal English tea before so we wanted to try something new. Toast and Jam flavor seemed quite intriguing, I couldn't pass it up 😅. The smell is truly divine but the taste was underwhelming. Maybe it's because we had it plain. We'll have another cup later today and we'll add milk and sugar. Maybe it'll be a bit better that way. lays and walkers where bought out by pepsi co. basically lays started out as a homewear companmy before wlakers existed. the nwalkers came into existance making crisps (chips) then later on lays stopped doing homewear and started making crisps. then pepsi gobbled them up, so lays is the older company but walkers have made crisps longer than lays

I think I’m the only person in the world who likes those Turkish delight bars, you definitely spread tried the marmite very thick, try it under melted cheddar on toast x
haha, there seem to be a lot people in the comments saying they like the Turkish delight bar, too 😆. The Marmite has actually grown on us but we've used it a lot more sparingly. Melted cheddar on top sounds yummy 🙂

The coconut tunnocks are lovely but really hard to get even over here, i had to go to other side of city to get some.
Quavers cheese are really lovely but avoid the other flavours, the Prawn and BBQ ones are actually gross.
Brandy butter sounds delicious! If we ever find ourselves in the UK for the holiday season, we'll have to try it.
The Tunnocks were great. Anja told me after the fact that we have tried the original version together when we were in Edinburgh, years ago. I have no memory of it - so I'll have to give the original another go.😂 I think I'd prefer without the coconut!
Hahaha. I wanted to try the Prawn cocktail version! I've never tried that as a crisp flavour. We were even thinking of trying regular Walkers Prawn Cocktail if we make a part two.

That tea is actually a black tea blend, not really a fruit tea. We drank it with a bit of milk and sugar, and it was much better! We're actually headed to the UK a few weeks from now, and plan on doing a part two. What type of tea should we try next??
Yorkshire tea with milk and sugar, leave the tea bag in for bout 3-4 minutes then take it out and add the milk and sugar. Try dipping in plain hobnobs and plain digestive. But don't dip it for too long cause' the biscuit will fall in 😂 also, get a penguin biscuit, bite the top corner and the bottom opposite corner, dip it the tea an suck the tea through like a straw, as soon as you taste the tea come through the penguin, immediately take it out before it falls in and eat quickly😊 it's amazing 👍❤❤❤

I (Anja) actually love Galaxy the most. I'd always get minstrels and the caramel bar back in the days. I wanted Brandon to try some but the shop was out of stock for Galaxy. Cadbury and Nestle are pretty good. Although, we tried the Yorkie one by Nestle when we visited the UK last time and I couldn't believe it was a plain block of chocolate and nothing else 😂

Haha, but it's a British brand and it's being sold at Tesco in the UK and Amazon UK 😆. Someone must buy it, just like someone must buy Turkish Delights 😅. We actually put milk and sugar in the tea today and it was quite delicious after all.

haha, it might be shocking, but I actually didn't really drink tea while living in Scotland, although I was offered tea many times a day by my flat mate 😂. The teabags weren't that bad, but we'll make sure to get proper tea next time we are in the UK and we'll dunk the Hob Nobs 😅. However, don't the biscuits get a bit soggy, since tea is kind of like water? Or is milk mandatory? Thanks for watching!
