How to Remove a Tailgate Assembly and Tail Light Removal - 2019 / 2020 Subaru Forester

- It is an insane amount of work to replace a tail light. We are taking apart the tailgate assembly and one of the last things we get to is taking apart the rear tail lights. The tail lights sit inside the tailgate so everything needs to come apart to get to the tail light. If the dealer wants to charge you an arm and a leg for the tail light replacement, this is why.
If you are looking for a specific part then scrub the video to try and find the part you are trying to remove. Watching the entire video will help you see what needs to be taken off in order to get to the part you are looking for. Backtrack your steps to put it all back together. The same way it comes off is the same way it goes back together, like buttoning a shirt.
This video shows taking off the sensors, the harness, the plastics, screws, bolts, clips, tailgate latch, tail lights, spoiler, windshield washer motor, tailgate motor and lock mechanism, license plate lights, basically everything down to the bare metal tail gate.
We recommend you take a few pictures of the harness along the way if you attempt to do this on your own as a reference for putting it back together. Also, careful when using a panel popper to not pry against the tail light because you will likely chip the tail light. Find a better angle.
2019 2020 and 2021 Subaru Foresters should all be the same.

I recently replaced my inner taillight lens on my 2019 Forester. This video was helpful for me to get started. For anyone else who has to replace theirs, you most certainly do not have to disassemble the liftgate as they do in the video.
The process goes as follows: disconnect your battery, remove the trim at the top of the tailgate near the 3rd brake light (clips and snaps), then the trim on either side (clips), and then the main trim panel (snaps + 4 screws) and the trim on the inside of the liftgate near the strut on the side of the light you are replacing (snaps). I'd recommend removing the liftgate lock if you are not taking the liftgate off the vehicle so you don't lock yourself out. Next, the outside trim piece with the Subaru logo has to come at least partially off (~6 nuts on the inside of the liftgate and snaps on the outside). Once out have a good bit of space with the trim at least partially piece removed, disconnect the wiring to the lights and remove the 4 nuts (2 on the inside of the liftgate, 2 on the outside rim of the liftgate) and there is an additional snap between the light assembly and the liftgate. Reassemble in reverse order.
I would recommend using plastic pry tools to take of trim pieces.
It is certainly more work than most vehicles but is definitely doable without a lot of experience.
You gave excellent written instruction for any novice to follow! Kudos to you. ( I also didn't remove the latch lock assembly and only 1 side trim panel along with the main base panel. I tend to lean towards taking apart as little as I need to.) 😀

Provides information on the topic but work seems to need more care. Removal of the rear panel that contains the proximity switch was lacking necessary warnings, rudeness to the "old guy" was out of place, disregard for warning not to break clips was not followed. Watching this video reinforces my resolution to do as much of my work as possible. On the positive side, I got to see more of the process than I presumed was necessary. In the end I still need clear information of how to as simply as possible replace lamps in the tail lights. BTW, I had already removed the outer taillight assembly without needing this video. The bolts are removed with a 10mm socket rather than a #10 what ever that is??
How did you remove the gate from the main body?
My middle break light popped off when a tree hit it. Just the red Glass/Plastic Circuit board and lights are still working. Dont know how to put the part back in. Thoughts?
