Very helpful video! I am dealing with this exact same issue on my 2016 Forester, and got stuck with how to remove this panel. Thanks! I really appreciate that you included the part where you broke the panel at 6:53 mark, and how you fixed it. --Such repairs don't always go as planned. This video has given me the confidence to take this on myself instead of paying the $700 Subaru quoted for a replacement panel, with new paint, etc. (A new, $700 panel would likely fail too based on this design with weak, poorly attached lugs supporting the trunk release button panel). Worst case scenario, I will pay the $700 to Subaru if I mess this up; best case scenario I will fix it for $50 in parts (seam sealer, panel popper tool, soldering iron). One tip for consideration is that I have the luxury to wait for a hot day, and allow this panel to soak up the hot sunlight, and hopefully make this panel brittle for removal. Thanks for the video!
Glad to hear Pat! Keep us posted on your success.

Just had a broken tailgate switch trim piece *and* broken garnish panel that you broke during the video that needed replacing, and this video was a perfect walkthrough - thank you!
The squeaking from my rear hatch was driving me crazy. Now I know how to fix it! Great video.
Great video with all the details bout how to perform this repair.
I have a problem with my Subaru Forester and was looking for instructions in how to get mine fixed.
This video was my guide in how to remove all these plastic pieces to get access to the finish plate.

I have to take that same panel off to fix a small hole in the panel. This plastic is very brittle. Thanks for the info great help.
Great video! I am replacing that bottom trim piece and the lift gate release button. your video showed me the way. Thank you!
Hi, i have a similar Forester. Prior to this repair, were there problems opening the trunk? Like, the trunk won't open even if you press the switch? And this fix solved that problem? Just wanted to understand the problem solved with the video. Thanks!
Mine is the same. I dis-assemble and clean and re-assemble (broke many retainers and had to epoxy them back) and now it works. I dont know the root cause but was desperate enough to try anything rather than pay the workshop $600
I couldn't get mine back on and it turns out it was the order I was doing the various pieces - thanks for the tips!!
Thanks for the video! Do I still have to remove inside panel to replace camera? Can’t I just remove outside panel trim to access camera?
Merci beaucoup pour ce tuto extrêmement pertinent. J'ai pu grâce à vous remplacer la pièce sans casse et en une petite heure, tuto compris.
Many Thx. Though there is slight difference in the Asian model, bthe video is very helpful and got my issue fixed. The outside panel does cause some issues as most of the retainer break (Perhaps due to the high ultra violet in the equator) and I epoxy all of them back. What I cannot figure out is that I stripped and i re-assemble them back. What was the root cause that disable it from opening in the first place? I did not replace any part. Hmmm just curious
VERRRY NICE VIDEO! Thank you for posting!
Thanks for watching!
Great video! Thanks! I'm gonna try this technique on my old VW T4 sliding door panels.
I just had this issue , was trying to close a fully loaded boot, pushing to help the motor close the lid and it snapped, what a flimsy plastic they have chosen for a very demanding load bearing location which is used on daily bases. i will first try to repair it using epoxy with a syringe. if that fails , i will add gorilla glue. if that fails, i will fill it with gap foam . not opening all these screws and crazy flimsy clips 😅
do you have any Video on how to remove and install the rear roof spoiler on 2014-2018 forester?
You are awesome! Mine just started doing this
Thank you so much for the video!
You are so welcome!
wow! I guess they don't make them like they used to....Mine is an 06 and there is a plastic piece covering a hole on the inside of the door that I went into with a screw driver to loosen it, but I want to know how to fix it so it doesn't stick again, which it is doing about 3 weeks after the first time it stuck....
Thanks Bro
I believe in have the same issue on my 2014
Do you know why it broke? I understand that you pulled on it pretty hard, but that plastic panel look very flimsy.
Its just super flimsy i opened my trunk and it barely tapped my garage door and broke it in several pieces
that part is awful, mine broke over the weekend just by me laying on it... insane.. Now i have to see how much would it cost to fix it
Its made of plastic junk, huge hole in mine. Have to replace. Thanks for the vid
Just disconnect & reconnect the battery. Saves you $140.00 at the dealer; just to set up an appointment. Will cost even more. $$$$$$$$$$
