( We'd already read parts on our own before, and there was NO WAY we were doing it sober.) We lasted about 10 minutes, and we weren't sure whether we were laughing or crying over how bad it was. It's a rite of passage.

I’m honestly surprised AO3 didn’t have a limit on tags in the first place. As a software developer, you learn very quickly that there’s always going to be someone who will try do something insane.
I'll be honest, I'm an engineering student who hangs out with a lot of unhinged engineers; most people in my circle don't add counter-measures in their passion projects just bc they want to see what will happen. So i can understand why ao3 wouldnt have that limit until it absolutely had to have it.
Let's not forget the impact of BTS army and other kpop fans in finally getting this fanfic taken care of. It was after they tagged it with various kpop fandoms that it finally ended up being addressed 😂

It's how you use it. I bet you don't search specific tags and, like myself, instead just go into the list for a fandom you like. If the fic had no involvement with those fandoms, then you'd have never come across it. For example, I pretty much only read Miraculous Ladybug fanfic.

Imo what the author did was not unintentional. And what they said about "technically following the rules" and blaming ao3 really tipped me off. What they did was misusing and abusing a function ao3 gave them for their own benefit and to the detriment of others. They basically found a blind spot on ao3's system and abused the shit out of it to gain popularity. And when it started to cause problems for other people their response was to deflect blame and continue doing it. That is a no no in my book. You don't do that shit with purely harmless intentions.

I personally read in AO3 only once in a while because I hate their tag system. So many authors abuse the tags and it's so annoying when you have a specific character you want to read about but they are shoehorned with 10 other characters. Although what this author did is malicious. I applaud them for their dedication but the fact they crossed tag as well is a big no in my book. Tagging EXO? My hero Academia? Marvel? And 74 other fandoms? That's desperate and straight sad. If they knew it was causing problems for others but also continued it then this author deserves to be blacklisted. It doesn't deserve any attention and nobody should go "search for it". Don't give it more glory than it already got.

I hated the 75. I liked to tag a decent bit, but not an excessive amount. Mostly just characters and ships, which I had a lot of, and then maybe 30-40 actual tags.
true but when i see like 40 tags i skip over it cuz im not reading 40 tags to see if its worth clicking. if anything the limit for tags should be 10 - 15. with some mandatory if its a fanfic that is with naruto. which the mandatory tag would be naruto. then you can add what you want. but i mean really 75 tags. thats way WAY too many. i mean whats the point. just spoil everything for all it matters. such as their personality motives and just giving everything away in the tags alone.
Ao3 is honestly a gift. Like this was the same site where some guy had the longest fanfic ever (it was about super smash bros) and half of it was spamming words. This is the same site where the longest fanfic rn is a loud house fic with 31 MILLION+ words. I love it
I'm really glad they now limit the tags to just 75, but I would love if they could up their system to include little subsections like Main Pairing, Sub-Pairing, Main Character, etc. That way, when searching through fics, I would not get stuck reading 12 chapters for my OTP to show up for half a scene and then disappear when they were tagged first...
I was thinking the same thing! I’d probably have three tiers: Main Sub main Background When it comes to ships and also maybe characters. I see generally people tag the main ship first and main characters first as a rule, but not always. I just feel like I’m missing out on good material because of how the system works.
Honestly, I wish we could have the option to tag each chapter and have those tags appear on the top of said chapter (with a "Show More/Less" feature). That way, I can say "yes, these characters appear" or "this chapter is where the content warning label is really needed", or even "dish soap". Then we could have a dropdown menu of which chapters have which tags and be able to skip the parts we really don't want to see, like dish soap.
If you choose to view entire work you can find how many times both of the ship's characters names is said and compare that to how many times it would show up if it was the focus, it's not exact and relies on estimates and stuff but it can at least sometimes prevent you reading a bunch of stuff that you weren't looking for, specifically look for both characters names because that decreases the likelihood that one of the characters is like a main side character with no focus on their relationship and if both are mentioned a bunch then it's more likely to be at least sorta focused on them, hope this helps

"Average AO3 work has 17 tags" factoid is actually just statistical error. Average AO3 work has 11 tags. Tags Georg, who lives in a cave and makes over 100 each day, is an outlier and should not have been counted.

I was thinking 113 and then you said 44, and I was like 'oh, that's not that bad- wait why is the limit 75 then' and got slapped hard by the 'hundred'.
my guess was at 1700, I like the number, and looking at the number of tags the image of the background had I thought it was gonna be a big number... but I couldnt even imagine the sheer amount of them there was, it didnt fit in everything in the screen even with the zoom-out, the thing kept scrolling and scrolling down and it wouldnt stop coming more
I don’t care what anyone says, I was incredibly relieved when they limited the number of tags you could put on a story. It was so annoying to scroll through ao3 and having to deal with story after story with a page or more worth of tags. No story needs that many tags. If you can’t fit all of your tags in that thing truly are necessary, make an author’s note within the story. Those are easier to read anyways when you need to convey a lot of info.
Or just get good and learn how to tag? Brevity is the soul of wit, and I tend to ignore page-long tags. Tags aren't meant to be spoilers or essays. They give some basic info/summarize the story, possible trigger warnings, and set the mood. You probably won't find "improper use of cupcakes" on a more serious/darker fic. Buy you may find it in a fluffy or silly one. If you need 100 tags to convey the fact you're writing a story in "x genre" with "x mood", you're doing something wrong. That's not mentioning the fact there are built in trigger warnings, appropriate age range indicators, and seperate character/relationship tag groups.
ao3 actually has a setting that allows u to collapse tags (without need for a skin) so to c the tags u have to click first. makes it way easier to ignore fics with too many tags
When My Immortal was deleted off of FFN the fanfic community mourned, but when Sexy Times with Wangxian was deleted off of Ao3 the fanfic community rejoiced- something, something society. Fr though, this person had a temper tantrum and made it *everyone's* problem, like some fandom version of a Karen rampaging through a Walmart. It's both funny and impressive they manage to even do that.

As someone who was in mdzs fandom even before this fic was published, and a mobile ao3 user, it was so so painful. At one point I timed how long it took me to scroll past the fic, and it was over 20 seconds. And this was in the early days :))))) I found a skin to block it after that, luckily

I was actually in the The Untamed fandom (for which this is written) heavily during 2019-2021 period, and every single time I searched up my favorite non-canon ship (Xicheng) with any tag like Angst with a happy ending, THIS monstrosity always popped up. It annoyed me so much, because since I was on phone, it took forever to scroll down. I was one of those Instagram AU author and was in a group with others, so I remember discussing ways to block this story and hating on it so many times. I personally didn't know that other fandoms are also annoyed with it, I just remembered how insane it was to just scroll down forever just to see other fics. It also had the most kudos/bookmarks, so it always showed up first in searching.
Same it always annoyed me. One time though I did actually read through all the tags so I could find one of the ones that I could get rid of in the filters.

I'm in the general MXTX fandom, I've read TGCF, MDZS, SVSSS, seen all their animes, and watched The Untamed, And I haven't heard of the story with this many tags until now. Although I did know about the Wang Yibo and Xiao Zhan fanfiction incident that got AO3 banned in China and resulted in Wang Yibo and Xiao Zhan no longer being allowed to work together.
The "Charles Xavier in a wheelchair" tag is still making me foam at the mouth, given the amount of work needed to canonize and fill this tag with works given most people are scared of writing him disabled
I mean, I kinda get why. While I prefer him in the chair Charles lives in a universe with cyborgs, super healing, literal magic, and super advanced science. It makes sense for him to have access to a treatment that allows him to walk again, even if that makes his character less interesting.

The My Little Pony fandom has several (in)famous fanfics that you could make whole videos about. "Cupcakes" was the original, "Rainbow Factory" is another popular one, and then there's perhaps the largest one in the entire fandom "Fallout: Equestria," which was actually published in physical book form multiple times.
I remember a screenshot of the fanfic going viral in a lot of my fandoms and I was literally like "NONONO I PROMISE THIS IS NOT WHAT MY FANDOM DOES I SWEAR." I would be just scrolling down twitter and then BAM, STWW JUMPSCARE
same, I was a full on MDZS appologist at the time. I remember talking to fellow authors and discussing how it might affect newer people to get into MDZS.

a little tip: you can type in "otp: true" in the "search within results" bar to get only the one ship you're looking for! It basically xcludes all fics with any other ship in it! :D
There’s this infamous fic in the Legend of Zelda fandom called ‘My Second Life’ where the author apparently had these lucid dreams of herself marrying Link from Ocarina of Time. I’d love to see it covered by someone who actually has a whole lot of love and respect for fanfiction, because I think other coverage I’ve seen it’s a bit misogynistic. Also it’s even better when you imagine Link as the version from the CDi games 😂

For me, excluding crossovers is simply a way to filter out garbage. Not to say that all crossovers are garbage, of course, but I find that most garbage fics are crossovers.

It's how you use it. I bet you don't search specific tags and, like myself, instead just go into the list for a fandom you like. If the fic had no involvement with those fandoms, then you'd have never come across it. For example, I pretty much only read Miraculous Ladybug fanfic.

Imo what the author did was not unintentional. And what they said about "technically following the rules" and blaming ao3 really tipped me off. What they did was misusing and abusing a function ao3 gave them for their own benefit and to the detriment of others. They basically found a blind spot on ao3's system and abused the shit out of it to gain popularity. And when it started to cause problems for other people their response was to deflect blame and continue doing it. That is a no no in my book. You don't do that shit with purely harmless intentions.

I personally read in AO3 only once in a while because I hate their tag system. So many authors abuse the tags and it's so annoying when you have a specific character you want to read about but they are shoehorned with 10 other characters. Although what this author did is malicious. I applaud them for their dedication but the fact they crossed tag as well is a big no in my book. Tagging EXO? My hero Academia? Marvel? And 74 other fandoms? That's desperate and straight sad. If they knew it was causing problems for others but also continued it then this author deserves to be blacklisted. It doesn't deserve any attention and nobody should go "search for it". Don't give it more glory than it already got.

I hated the 75. I liked to tag a decent bit, but not an excessive amount. Mostly just characters and ships, which I had a lot of, and then maybe 30-40 actual tags.

Ao3 is honestly a gift. Like this was the same site where some guy had the longest fanfic ever (it was about super smash bros) and half of it was spamming words. This is the same site where the longest fanfic rn is a loud house fic with 31 MILLION+ words. I love it
I'm really glad they now limit the tags to just 75, but I would love if they could up their system to include little subsections like Main Pairing, Sub-Pairing, Main Character, etc. That way, when searching through fics, I would not get stuck reading 12 chapters for my OTP to show up for half a scene and then disappear when they were tagged first...

When it comes to ships and also maybe characters. I see generally people tag the main ship first and main characters first as a rule, but not always. I just feel like I’m missing out on good material because of how the system works.
Honestly, I wish we could have the option to tag each chapter and have those tags appear on the top of said chapter (with a "Show More/Less" feature). That way, I can say "yes, these characters appear" or "this chapter is where the content warning label is really needed", or even "dish soap". Then we could have a dropdown menu of which chapters have which tags and be able to skip the parts we really don't want to see, like dish soap.
Some fics include 'Character|Ship- mentioned' or 'Ship- Background' which I think should be a proper tagging system rather than an optional one.

If you choose to view entire work you can find how many times both of the ship's characters names is said and compare that to how many times it would show up if it was the focus, it's not exact and relies on estimates and stuff but it can at least sometimes prevent you reading a bunch of stuff that you weren't looking for, specifically look for both characters names because that decreases the likelihood that one of the characters is like a main side character with no focus on their relationship and if both are mentioned a bunch then it's more likely to be at least sorta focused on them, hope this helps

You might be confusing them. If we assume that 11 tags is the most common, that would likely be both the mode (by definition the most common) and the median (the one in the middle, which in case of anything approaching a bell curve would be the same as the mode or close. The mode is 11: the most common number.
The median is 11: there are 11 numbers, the 6th number is the median (in case of even, it is the average of the center two)
However, the *average* is 16.
The thing she was reading from says: The average number of tags are 17 and the most common have 11(which can be said to be "the average work" have 11), these two statement can both be true at the same time.
It is worth noting, however, that while the thing she is reading from might be correct, she said "typical work" which is.... mode. Which make what she *said* wrong.
Edit: her follow up statement of 17 is the average and 11 being most common, on the other hand, is completely correct(assuming that the data is 17 mean and 11 mode/median). It's... undisciplined of her to say things different ways, they do actually mean different things.
Generally speaking, for things that is unlikely to have outlier , we use average. Otherwise, we use median, precisely because a single large outlier can mess up the average horribly. Mode is rather rarely used because it's kind of a weird concept to grasp and tend to overlap with one or the other so is usually rather moot. But while you can make the choice to use the median or mode to effectively ignore the outliers, you *cannot* make the choice to exclude outlier from averages.

my guess was at 1700, I like the number, and looking at the number of tags the image of the background had I thought it was gonna be a big number... but I couldnt even imagine the sheer amount of them there was, it didnt fit in everything in the screen even with the zoom-out, the thing kept scrolling and scrolling down and it wouldnt stop coming more
I don’t care what anyone says, I was incredibly relieved when they limited the number of tags you could put on a story. It was so annoying to scroll through ao3 and having to deal with story after story with a page or more worth of tags. No story needs that many tags. If you can’t fit all of your tags in that thing truly are necessary, make an author’s note within the story. Those are easier to read anyways when you need to convey a lot of info.
Or just get good and learn how to tag? Brevity is the soul of wit, and I tend to ignore page-long tags. Tags aren't meant to be spoilers or essays. They give some basic info/summarize the story, possible trigger warnings, and set the mood. You probably won't find "improper use of cupcakes" on a more serious/darker fic. Buy you may find it in a fluffy or silly one. If you need 100 tags to convey the fact you're writing a story in "x genre" with "x mood", you're doing something wrong. That's not mentioning the fact there are built in trigger warnings, appropriate age range indicators, and seperate character/relationship tag groups.

ao3 actually has a setting that allows u to collapse tags (without need for a skin) so to c the tags u have to click first. makes it way easier to ignore fics with too many tags

As someone who was in mdzs fandom even before this fic was published, and a mobile ao3 user, it was so so painful. At one point I timed how long it took me to scroll past the fic, and it was over 20 seconds. And this was in the early days :))))) I found a skin to block it after that, luckily
And after reading some of the comments, it seems like scrolling through it on mobile was a circle of hell on its own. Lol

I was actually in the The Untamed fandom (for which this is written) heavily during 2019-2021 period, and every single time I searched up my favorite non-canon ship (Xicheng) with any tag like Angst with a happy ending, THIS monstrosity always popped up. It annoyed me so much, because since I was on phone, it took forever to scroll down. I was one of those Instagram AU author and was in a group with others, so I remember discussing ways to block this story and hating on it so many times.
I personally didn't know that other fandoms are also annoyed with it, I just remembered how insane it was to just scroll down forever just to see other fics. It also had the most kudos/bookmarks, so it always showed up first in searching.
Same it always annoyed me. One time though I did actually read through all the tags so I could find one of the ones that I could get rid of in the filters.

Although I did know about the Wang Yibo and Xiao Zhan fanfiction incident that got AO3 banned in China and resulted in Wang Yibo and Xiao Zhan no longer being allowed to work together.

I mean, I kinda get why. While I prefer him in the chair Charles lives in a universe with cyborgs, super healing, literal magic, and super advanced science. It makes sense for him to have access to a treatment that allows him to walk again, even if that makes his character less interesting.

"Cupcakes" was the original, "Rainbow Factory" is another popular one, and then there's perhaps the largest one in the entire fandom "Fallout: Equestria," which was actually published in physical book form multiple times.

There’s this infamous fic in the Legend of Zelda fandom called ‘My Second Life’ where the author apparently had these lucid dreams of herself marrying Link from Ocarina of Time.
