Along with that, what if the Elden beast was at one point a physical creature. Possibly a scaleless dragon?
In dark souls 1 and 3 both scaleless dragon bois are a very pale, almost slimy whiteish blue. The almost same color as the sack thingy Marika pulls the golden strands from. It's obviously more whiteish purple but you get the idea.
If she did kill the physical form of it, that could explain why she's crucified.
Now I'm wonder if at one point outer Gods didn't need a vessel or host. Like did Marika kill the physical form to take the power from the Elden beast in the hopes to become a true God? And later down the line the Elden beast was able to "fight back" and crucified her? Hmmm 🤔
It's also kinda interesting Marika is known as a "God" and not a "Goddess" 🤔

It says it was born of a corpse, it only harms those of the greater will and it’s vassals… it’s tiny compared to Radagon/Marikas one, I think this might be some kind of child of a god made into a sword, that’s what’s so heinous of a crime which they committed in the eternal cities?
No one mentioned the woman burning in the city . Her weapon looks like a Godskin peeler of some sort .
Marika and GEQ were siblings. Their mother was the god of the previous age and both of her daughters were empyreans. When the GEQ was selected to become the god of the coming age Marika killed her and stole the fragments of what would become what we know as the Elden ring.
Melina is either the GEQ’s daughter or the GEQ herself. She was killed in Messmer’s extermination but because she is the aspect of the rune of death she now exists as a disembodied spirit. She was set free by Miquella when he came to the land of shadows , given Torent by him, and instructed to find us, the player.
Not 100% convinced but I think there’s some possibility to what you’re saying! Though I guess we’ll have to wait til other dlc!
Melina is one of the three cursed butterflies. Melina has a cursed body, imprinted with a burn mark even throughout spirit, her name starts with an M, and ends with A, and she has the ability to rebirth, considering she is the Gloam Eyed Queen, and died.
Following this, you have to be born between two identical beings to be a cursed child, and the only person who married self was Marika and Radagon.
In simple terms, Melina is Marika's daughter.
I know most people are attracted to the idea Messmer is the cursed butterfly, but the conditions to be the butterfly never meets Messmer's description.

the gloam eyed queen wasn't another personality of marika, it's just marika before she became a god by creating radagon. the seduction and betrayal is the gloam eyed queen going from someone who had an army to kill gods turning into someone who was seduced by the power and immortality of being a god. radagon was the means into turning into one perfect being both female and male, represent causality in one part and regression on another. the gloam eyed queen was an empyrean and empyreans have a doggo given to them to make sure they do what they are supposed to do, that's why maliketh fought and defeated her and that's why once marika became what she was supposed to be, he was loyal to her.

Melina isn't the Gloam-Eyed Queen, or St. Trina/Miquella. Melina is the daughter of the Gloam-Eyed Queen. And the GEQ was Marika's twin sister.
She(Melina) says she was born at the foot of the Erdtree, and that her mother gave he task inside it. One that she would eventually lose(until remembering it after we bring her to the tree(where she probably had a conversation with Marika)). She never says her mother's name, and doesn't state it was Marika.
Melina only has one peculiar eye, and it was probably sealed after the GEQ's death/defeat as a form of punishment or in fear that she could become just as powerful.
She probably meets Miquella in the Land of Shadow, and is recruited to help him with his plans back in the Lands Between(hence how she has Torrent).
Now, why do I think Marika and the GEQ are twins? The GEQ was an Empyrean, just as Marika would have been before she became a God. And, Marika had two sets of Twins whenever she had children as herself. Malenia/Miquella and Morgott/Mohg. There's a theme there.

@@OblivionZX I'm not sure if he has a place in this particular theory, outside of being a demigod child of Marika that helps complete the 'sets of three'. Morgott/Mohg/Godwyn; Ranni, Rykard, Radahn; and Malenia/Miquella/Messmer.
I can't help but wonder if Messmer really is the 'Serpent' that betrays the Erdtree. I imagine he was initially sent into the Land of Shadow to finish off any traces of the Crucible, but he started using methods and means that were more aligned with Blasphemy. Maybe after conquering the Shadow, Messmer became delusional and twisted into believing he was to be the next Elden Lord. I like to think that the dialogue we hear in the gameplay trailer is referring to himself, and not the Tarnished. He is probably the most bereft of light, but has deluded himself into thinking Marika has chosen him to be the next Lord. Why else would she use him to kill the Fire Giants and the remnants of the Crucible?
Gloam-Eyed Queen is Guts, Marika is Griffith, Messmer is Casca.

COLORS ARE EVERYTHING. The only purple or pink in the game is related to either St Trina/Godskins, Gravity, and the Gloam Eyed Queen. Melina is the only character we see with PINK HAIR. And in the ending cutscene of the Frenzied Flame ending, her closed eyed is revealed to be purple. From the trailer they say, "An affair from which gold arose." Who was conceived at the Erdtree? MELINA. Maybe thats why she wants it burned. The only ones able to put us to sleep in the game was Ranni when she gave us torrent and Melina puts us to sleep just before burning the Erdtree. NO ONE seems to put in the Gloam Eyed Queen into the equation. Or the dragon communion with Lansaxx. Every evergoeal is related to those on the plot of the assassination of Godwyn. This part is speculation but maybe the Gloam Eyed Queen is maybe in some form,Melina, hence the same missing eyes. Maybe she was trying to reclaim HER throne from Marika, therefore BURNING everything Marika stood for and represents. Theres a reason fire and giants flame incantations were BANNED. See also bloodflame. Marika took the rune of Death thereby sealing everyone's fate unwillingly to the Erdtree. The godskins and Gloam Eyed Queen are "god slayers" therefore killing all those related to the Golden Order and Marika. And look up the definition of gloam. Also the LOST GRACE in the "roundtable hold" is veiled and away from the mainland. In the trailer again it is stated, "A war never seen" and "A purge without GRACE or HONOR". Maybe we were in the shadow lands this whole time.

Anyone notice how the Erdtree looks like its being "cast" or "projection", almost like the ghosts that walk around and guide you to the catacombs? Like a projection of Marika's Golden Order on top of which once was NOT considered blasphemous. But in Shadow of the Erdtree trailers, it looks REAL and an actual physical tree.
I think the golden tree is a false projection on top of the real tree below in the Depths. And that's where Godwyn is...

I've been thinking the same thing for a while. It's like Sorosh holding back Hora Loux and turning him into Godfrey. Malaketh did the same for the Marika. Holding back the Gloam eyed queen and potentially killed her in some alter ego thing.
Could definitely see this being the case! I hope we get answers in the dlc!

Leyndell has a huge hole after the main gate. You have to use the side gate to get it. So maybe that missing city is the one in the DLC after they were physically separated.
My head cannon for now is pretty much like you say, the watery parts of TLB are where the Shadow world lies, like the floating fortified city in the trailers could be the missing Leyndell part, and the big landmass with the Tree at one end (up until now it doesn't seem to be at the geographical center) may correspond to the central sea.

Tarnished Archaeologist pointed out that the nameless city where Godwyn lies is directing under that hole in leyndell and uses the same architecture. He also makes various other points therefore I believe that hole is where the nameless city used to be
An interesting theory. I'm still inclined to believe that Melina is the Gloam Eyed Queen due to her having a gloam eye showed in the frenzied flame ending. He claim that she will hunt down the frenzied lord means that she is more than a mere finger maiden. However, this theory could still be true.

Melina is a cloned bud of Marika the way Millicent is of Malenia. She's meant to bloom into the next Gloam Eyed Queen. She's Marika's daughter, but only Marika's daughter.
Her and Millicent wear the same outfit. This means something.
Regarding Melina's eyes:
I believe one is gloam (inherited from her mother) and the other is golden (inherited from her father). The golden one is grey in the frenzied flame ending, because the source of Grace has disappeared, and Grace itself is no more. Her hair colour "supports" this notion, as it's a mix of Marika's blonde and Radagon's red.
If we assume Miquella and Malenia are her siblings, I think Miquella inherited entirely from his mother - gloam eyes and blonde hair - whilst Malenia inherited solely form her father - golden eyes and red hair. Of course, we can't know this yet for sure.
Melina is the Sibling Between, but not the Gloam-Eyed Queen. Only her daughter.
It's the same eye as Blaidd and the beast eye. That color seems to be for shadows.

I'm thinking the Gloam Eyed Queen is her sister. GEQ was an empyrean, which is a birth right. We know she would've had a fingers, and that the fingers allied with - but weren't part of - the greater will. Hence why they were confused, when the erdtree didn't open. She was defeated by Maliketh, Marika's shadow - who can't harm her. Defeating her locked away the rune of death, and weakened the black god-slaying flame.. in that first scene, it looks like she's pulling stringy runes out of a godskin swaddling cloth (sort of like marikas hammer was covered with, when she broke the Elden ring). I'm thinking Messmer's flame is the original god-slaying flame (hence the dark red, and blackness to it - like the rune of death has)
I completely agree… Marika and The Gloam-eyed Queen are one entity. Marika betrayed her and sealed destined death. Another hint to this is that both Marika and Radagon are missing the left side of their body, maybe hinting that this was lost when GEC was sealed away. Last time we see Marika in full body is the moment she is creating the Golden order with shadow as a byproduct.
I feel so bad for the GEQ, maybe I’m wrong in that, but she seems like such a tragic character!
my hot takes are:
- Miquella is the soldier we see in the trailer with the helm that has a bird or something on the top of it
- messmer is somehow related to mohg
- we will have a secret ending involving miquella's rune.
Would love to see the top two come true, sadly Miyazaki has said the dlc won’t have any effect on the endings tho :(
I have long held this belief myself, and there are a lot of good in lore reasons. Stuff I didn't see, Gloam Eyed Queens sword looks very similar to the sword that Radagon is turned into, same colors and spiral, and they are both the same being. Radagon had to be one to remove the rune of death, because from quotes Marika stated that her children would become sacrifices should they become naught at all. Maybe the Two Fingers agreed with Radagon to remove death, and Marika resisted and was bested by Malakith and sealed in the Erdtree without her power. Love the video, good work!

The thing is the Double Helix is not exclusive to the Godskin. The Elden Beast 's sword has the double helix design. The Bloody Helice (sword of Mogh's servants) also has the Double Helix twirling design. The Shard Spiral is a literal double helix glint stone spell created by Raya Lucaria sorcerers. Rennala's Staff also has a twirling double helix design and D's Inseparable Sword has a slight double helix design as well. The Golden Halberd (Tree Sentinel weapon) also has a double Helix Design in the tip. Bolt of Gransax also has a somewhat double helix twirling design.
So a weapon having a double helix/twirl design can't really be an exclusive connection to the Gloam Eye Queen.
Yea, its not the GEQ. The weapon looks nothing like hers and she was defeated by Maliketh, and that was in the lands between. Can't even be Melina because being murdered doesn't erase your memory, look at Ranni. And burning appears to kill both spirit and body plus she's a knife fighter. There's a lot of nonsense out there.
@@exquisitedoomlapointe185 Yeah I don't think the trailer has any relation to the Godskin or Gloam Eye Queen at all. There are skinned bodies all over Elden Ring. Rykard's bodies are all skinless, Mogh's blood worshipers are skinless zombies, Miquella himself is skinless inside the Cocoon.
And white cloth isn't exclusive to the Godskin either. Varre wears white and so does Miquella.
That lady kneeling down in front of the fire in the trailer is most likely a new NPC not the GEQ.

@@theemeraldgecko310 Yeah, you can make the argument that the Gloam Eyes Queen is Marika. I just don't think there's enough evidence for that. I do think the Serpent God and the Godskin are related considering the Noble defends the church of Eiglay and the Godskin have serpentine body designs. I just don't think the GEQ is Marika or existed in the beginning with Marika.
GEQ came after the rune of death was removed and the Golden Order was established and after the War of the Giants since that is stated to be the first war the Golden Order waged which puts the GEQ conflict after that.
5:54 One thing I want to point out is that after the Elden Ring crashed into the Lands Between, there was a Prehistoric Age of Dragons long long before Marika's Age.
So while I think the strands could be physical form of the Elden Beast, that corpse cant be it's own.
Maybe it the corpse of a previous God, as hinted by the "Seduction, Betrayal and Affair" themes in the Trailer.

I say this because we have never been told how it has reacted to Marika becoming a God, Or Godfrey or Radagon becoming Elden Lords.
Since it's the Elden Ring Itself, I believe that its is housed inside the Actual God of that Age. And when we broke Radagon, we also broke Marika too. So we were forced to fight it.
But since Marika is an Empyrean, and Empyrean's are destined to become Gods by the Greater Will, maybe it didnt fight against her when she killed the previous God. Rather it was willingly taken away and accepted into her.
Maybe that's what's happening in the trailer scene as she pulls out Golden strands similar to the Rune Strands that come off her hammer.
For me, this is the best time of the build up to the DLC. Everyone is screaming out their interpretation and really doing a great job with it! Once the DLC is released we will all know for sure, but this time right now we will forever be grateful for!

My only thing with the strands being from the elden beast is i think the elden beast came crashing down when the music is played and the shockwave is shown. Whatever she pulled the gold from wasnt the elden beast its self but thats how she summoned it down
a little detail, in the 1.0 version of the game maliketh's attacks have a purple glow ot them, a very interesting relation to the gloam eyed queen

Milicent's questline makes me think Marika was cursed with death before becoming a god of life. Milicent wants to stay who she was, but Marika has an alter ego that uses holy to fight death. It's a lot like Melania using flowing swordsmanship to keep the rot from completely consuming her, and in both cases they fight a great champion. Melania needed to become the rot goddess to stand a chance against Radahn, mightiest demigod of the shattering. Marika could have gone through something similar with Maliketh while she was an empyrean, pushing her through combat to become a god, defeating her inner gloam eyed queen and sealing it away. But to be honest Marika in her attempts for immortality sounds like a rot goddess to me, the church of the plague seems to have no problem with the image of Marika or the undead normally around her churches. Marika's undead might be like the plague from earlier times, with scarlet rot re-emerging

could it be that Marika is/was/were the Gloam-eyed Queen, and she was seduced by the Golden One, betrayed the Godskins by killing them and to cover up she introduced the "the Gloam-eyed Queen was defeated by Maliketh" and that's the "gulling" that Maliketh says about her?
This is a really cool theory, honestly would not be surprised if it turns out to be the case!

I actually said this in a different video: My first thought seeing the person in the fire, cradling what might be a spear or ceremonial weapon, was that it's a deathbed companion. Perhaps she's mourning the loss of someone where all that's left is their weapon.
Which ties closer into your theory about the deathbed companions in another video you made. It's just the way the figure is cradling the weapon like they are in a sort of defeated mournful way.
my theory is that Maliketh used a part of the Rune of Death to kill g.e.q's BODY, and then allowed miquella to manifest g.e.q's SOUL in a form of a spirit - Melina. that would explain why she can put tarnished to sleep and why she can basically reappear out of thin air near sites of grace - both these abilites can be connectod to st. Trina which is Miquellas alter ego. That is exactly why Melina can't remember her past - Miquella had to leave his body and his fate to travel to the land of shadows. It's pretty much confirmed that we'll see st. trina in the dlc so I suppose he used st. Trina's fate in the land of shadows. We can also say that sleep can cause memory problems but ehhhh....
I think this is a great theory, I’m just a little confused on why you think then GEQ was killed using the rune of death by Maliketh and the result is spirit Melina?
we can see that the erdtree has been damaged/ burned before. maybe it's because geq tried to use the rune of death to get inside the erdtree to marika for reasons we don't know yet, and Maliketh tried to stop her, but because Marika and GEQ are the same person/conciousness he wasn't able. didn't want to kill both her body and soul... Remeber, Maliketh is reffered to as Marika's shadow. as to why he allowed miquella to manifest g.e.q's soul into melina - no idea. and there's plenty of evidence that melina is, in fact, Gloam-Eyed Queen
@aiwen_v2 interesting theory! It’s super cool!
I do find some parts of these believable, especially with the spiral, but there are some key points which contradicts this theory.
First thing to point out is the fact the Gloam Eyed Queen used blackflame incantation. Blackflame is a merged version of Destined Death and fire, which Marika had only access to one. Marika can't control fire, and even if she could through Messmer, there is no point in actually using the fire to weaken herself than just use death itself.
This leads to Destined Death, which was formed with the Elden Ring. It is impossible for Blackflame to exist without order, since thats where it branched off from.
Marika also has no style of eye of gloam, and the only person with this eye we know of is Melina. People don't name someone through a trait everyone has, meaning the Gloam Eyed Queen is the only person eith the eye of gloam. The only person with this eye we know of is Melina, and she is the only person for a reason.
Going back to blackflame, Melina is the smoldering butterfly, cursed with the gift of fire. Adding all this, this is the entire lore of the Gloam Eyed Queen
After the defeat of the fire giants, Marika was cursed with red hair, which made her a beast and a tool. To get away from this curse and rule again, Marika cloned herself which made Radagon, who was a mix of the fire giants and Marika herself. We know what happens next, and the three butterflies are born. One would be Melina, cursed by the Fell God who lives through the last remaining fire giant. Melina is given two purposes, one being to burn down the Erdtree by the stars, and another to hold death by Marika. Melina only finds her first purpose 5,000 years later, and follows on with Marika's duties. After the Rune of Death is seperated, Melina becomes the keeper of Destined Death. However, she is consumed by its power, and combines it with her cursed flame to create blackflame. Melina now starts taking on disciples, which as first only started with apostles, and starts killing gods and using their skin as armor, showing power. Marika gets threatened by this, abd sends Maliketh to fight the Gloam Eyed Queen, and wins. Melina is soon reborn, but without memory nor body, since her body has been destroyed by death. However, she keeps her curse of burned body, and goes onto serve Ranni temporalily. Maliketh becomes the most feared creature in the Lands Between since not only does he hold the power of death, but he defeated the previous owner without any strength.
Love it! Whatever’s going on in that scene, I think the Gloam Eyed Queen has to be involved in some way.

An interesting theory, but I honestly believed that Marika and the Gloam-Eyed Queen are two separate people. There is too much in the lore that indicates that Marika killed the Gliam-Eyed Queen and attempted to purge her followers for me to think that they are the same person.
I think Melina is Saint Trina, at least Saint Trina becomes Melina after being cast off by Miquella. She is confused, Bodiless, Cast Aside with some vague notion to return to the Erdtree. She is clearly Marika's offspring, she says as much, and there's a ton of evidence about her character from naming conventions to direct ties to the Golden Order via her unique spell. It is pretty tragic honestly
I think the land of shadow wasnt originally called that, and thats why the trailer says shadow was born. When she grew the erdtree it literally cast a shadow over the land as well as her past.

Now here's something I literally just noticed, when looking at both times (between both video's) Messmer used his flame, during the first one, when he forms his flame in his hand, if you look close enough, you won't see the black smoke pouring out of it, like in the second trailer, I have a feeling during the story trailer, the rune of death was still installed in the Elden Ring, and during the announcement trailer, the rune of death was removed by that time, cause I believe he's attacking the player character, but without the rune of death (I'm also assuming when we go into the DLC, whatever we did in the lands between, won't matter during the DLC, like the tree being on fire won't be viewable in the land of shadow) but who knows

Its makes more sense to be Melina wich is a body less Soul born on the foot of the erdtree. At some point, Melina's body was burned, which left her bodiless and as a roaming spirit with no memory of her purpose given to her by her mother. Means also Melina could be the girl in the new trailer holding the helix like object from her mother and at the same point she burned down or in other words melina is the daughter of the gloam eyed queen

Is it really a huge coincidence that Godfrey had his Crucible knight before the erdtree and Marika as the GEQ has her Godskins? I don't think so.
They are some of the only enemies found throughout the entire game in the most random of places! They both also have body warping properties. That being the crucible knights have their crucible tails, wings and belly's, along with which ever new ones we find in the dlc. The Godskins have their body morphing stuff as well with the snake morphing and body expansion.
In the dlc trailers what do we see? Snakes and crucible stuff!

What keeps me confused about Melina and Marika is the fact that Melina is constantly quoting “Marika’s own words”.
The fact that she knows her exact words is proof that she was present in lots of moments… Perhaps as a part of Marika or a part of Miquella…
When talking about Miquella, Gideon says that “perhaps the queen’s sorrow was justified” and that if Miquella continues in his slumber everything will be fine. It seems to me like Marika destroyed the Elden ring because she knew Miquella was going to the shadow realm, I can’t figure out why but it seems like it. Miquella seems to want to abandon the principles of the golden order and restore the natural order of things…
That is why I think Melina is an alter ego of Miquella (plus the connections with Torrent, etc). Melina, who I think is the GEQ, wants to restore the natural order of things as Miquella!
Also going back to the destruction of the Elden ring, Miquella seems to want the Tarnished (the player) to restore the Elden ring, no matter with what rune (therefore the different endings where you mend the Elden ring with different runes), so it seems to me like the destruction of the ER by Marika is an attempt at stopping Miquella. Maybe it was a successful attempt and Miquella really needs the ring mended, that is why Melina (Miquella’s alter ego) is pissed at you only when you burn everything with the flame of frenzy! Because Miquella and Melina need the ER mended!!
The reason why I don’t think Melina is a daughter of Marika and Radagon is because there is no throne for her in Leyndell and there isn’t a single trace of her existence in the Lands Between, she can’t be the third butterfly!

I have thought this since the very get-go. I mean, Marika and Godfrey literally went around slaying gods…. God slayer great sword. Chosen by the two fingers…. Empyrean. Marika (who is Radagon) needs destined sealed after slaying all the other gods, in order to create the golden order. Defeated by Maliketh in order to seal death away and create her new vision, leaving the predated age of the erdtree behind them.

While I don’t think it’s Marika exactly, I do think the Gloam Eyed Queen could absolutely be an Outer God, more of a presence that can manipulate or possess people. This is how you explain Melina with her gloam eye, Miquella as Saint Trina, and perhaps even the betrayal of Marika.
Messmer could have known that this was the case, perhaps even being the son of Marika while under the influence of the Gloam Eyed Queen. There’s a lot of proof that Messmer served MARIKA, not the Golden Order.

It has been hinted all along that Marika secretly wishes to slay the God. Perhaps that was what she aimed to do in her past life as an empyrean as well - as the rebellious queen who led the godskins and literally wielded the flames of death. Perhaps she even got very close, but only to realize that in order to slay a god, she must first become god herself -- in doing so she must betray her followers of death and became what embodies eternal, and burn all evidence of her past along with it.
It's been puzzling why Marika as the symbol of eternal light is dressed in black. Hewg described her as terrifying which doesn't fit her exterior image as the goddess of bunny and fertility. It would make sense if the fearsome aspect of her comes from her previous role as the symbol of death. Also we have never seen Marika's eyes, they are always intentionally hidden in all released artworks. Maybe we'll finally see them in a dusk color, a trait Melina has partially inherited from her mother.
(That is now my head canon it will have to come true lol)

I wouldn't be surprised if the Elden ring, all of the runes, and the strings marika plucked are all made of aliens cells which exert a hivemind influence like an outer god. The cells might as well be part of an outer god. Incantations and holy attacks are manifestations of released energy from these cells. The more elden cells one has the more powerful they are.

Im on board with marika being the GEQ. Not totally sold. But theres enough evidence to it being a previous self. It fits her warlike past well i think. With a timeline so infinitely vast it becomes easy to forget or blur history.
Curious what you think about Mesmer looking like he is using life/growth as a weapon? Those impaled giants in the snow start to make a lot more sense if someone had the ability to grow weapons out of the ground. If Marika is the God of life and he is the bastard antichrist figure he appears, he might have equal or greater power. A fallen prince of life. Im also going to go on a limb and suggest he took the ideas of Miquella even futher, before Miquella even knew he existed. Perhaps Mesmer was able to unify all forms of power? Life, death, dragon, chaos, blood, pretty much all the godlike powers. Rather than exterminating rival powers, perhaps he adds them to his own? If he were to become more powerful than Marika herself, that would be a good reason for Marika to abandon him. I wonder if her only choice was to stick half the world in an evergaol?

What if the mother that Messmer is referring to is not Marika? What if his mother is the Gloam-Eyed queen? He has a gloaming eye (sort-of), uses maybe an ancient version of the black flames. Perhaps Marika defeated the Gloamed-Eye the same way as she did with Rennala, by having an affair with her in Radagon form (and maybe being Messmer's DAD in this case).
Also, the godskin have a strange connection towards serpents (the fatty is located into the Serpent God church) and Messmer clearly has some connection to serpents too.
Also I believe that Messmer and Rykard are related, but I don't know how, it's more of a guts feeling.
Also, thinking more on connection between The Lands of Shadows- Lands Beetween parallel, what if Melina is actually Messmer? They have the same closed eye, it could explain being born at the foot of the Erdtree. Also Melina is fucking able to set on fire the Erdtree....
