What I like about Kenpo is that you smother the attacker with a bunch of strikes to vital areas and it offers you many options to finish the attacker. I believe that the attacker would be finished with the first few strikes, the rest is overkill; but is always good to learn all the options you have. Love the sequential flow of action!
I’ve seen Larry Tatum he will whoop all your asses in a real street fight. These techniques r to show the flow of your body and motion. The techniques in these videos r called the ideal phase. In the street that most likely won’t happen. In this technique for example by that double hammer he’ll be on the floor if you hit him hard enough. By then you could run
I love these extensions. You can use part and pieces from each of them with different attacks, and use them with different core techniques. So much material. I have Tatum's DVD course, His instruction is good enough that a striker from a different art can actually learn much of this just from the DVDS.
is this actual technique or movie choreography?! :D i need manual for this. but honestly i appreciate his movements, flow and ki. and passion. original master ken...
@@Youdontknowwhatliterallymeans I agree that it is not going to work at all. If we assume that you are attacked by a quadriplegic that allows this to "work", you then have to explain to those 12 people why you kept "defeating" him some more, once he hit the ground. I'm not even sure what the purpose of the face scrape is.
I wish this would work irl cause Kenpo looks so damn cool. Gm Tatum has crazy good form too. It just depends too much on your opponent doing what you want (and need) them to do, which is the polar opposite of a street fight. I have no doubt the art has power but this is not practical. If anyone thinks this could work watch 2 kenpo practitioners spar.....looks like every other street fight and nothing like this. Still a very cool art and thanks for the video they are fun to watch.....poor rick!!!
I agree. Nobody is just gonna stay there after you hammer their backside twice. These techniques r to show the flow of your body and motion. The techniques in these videos r called the ideal phase. In the street that most likely won’t happen. In this technique for example by that double hammer he’ll be on the floor if you hit him hard enough. By then you could run away.
yes they work. My teacher has stories of him using it on the street. But its always like oh it ended after this move or that move, which could have been the first strike in the technique, or in the middle of the technique.
@@KeepItFresh02 i wasnt saying none of it works but i can gaurantee it doesnt work like this. Like i said there are a ton of videos of kenpo practitioners sparring and it doenst look anything like the techniques shown in the sets, it looks like 2 dudes duking it out. Thats all well and good but when execution looks nothing like practice theres a problem. Thats why BJJ is so popular and effective, practice is execution.
@@ninji5226 That is because of the principle of the ideal technique, which teaches anatomical strikes and body reaction. This is if it worked out exactly. It doesnt of course work exactly like this. Each kenpo technique can be used in combination with others to design what you want to work with.
@@jimlowe5433 I think it could work in a "punches in bunches" type approach using smaller sections of these longer technique's. I train in eskrima and there are a lot of similarities where we do pre determined movements based on this and that and it's all good but as soon as we go live, very different story. Some things get mixed in and used but it's a small percentage for sure. Regardless it's the artist not the art that determines who walks away and who's carried away and nothing will ever change that. Still love kenpo though.
CRACKS ME UP!! I THINK AFTER THE CHOP TO THE BACK OF THE NECK, HE WOULD HAVE DROPPED WITH A BROKEN NECK. FIGHT OVER, NOW YOU GET ARRESTED FOR MAN SLAUGHTER.
What you're gonna have is 1 guy takes every lesson and 1 guy takes no lesson. For me, I spent 6 years in Kenpo. There were black belts I would have kicked their ass on day one. When I quit, as a Dan. Visa versa. That's not the thing. It's self-discipline
agreed. I studied Kenpo in Pasadena for a couple years, then had to move. I saw Kenpo instructors in other schools that were so sloppy and poor technique and conditioning wise, I knew several lesser belts (even orange belts) who I would bet on against them. Of course being early in a training a system doesn't mean you know nothing about fighting either...
Um ok....works if it placed in a practical application...like teaching combinations in boxing and using the Mitts to put the combos in action with drills....interesting
I would too. :) Looks great in demo videos with a willing "practice dummy". Would this work in a MMA fight? Against an "experienced/trained fighter"? How about on the street where there are no rules...when you don't know how many bad guys there are surrounding u. :) It's like Aikido. Looks great in demo's and in Segal films. :)
People who put things like this do not understand Kenpo and what Kenpo is about. Every Kenpoist knows that these techniques would never work like this in a streetfight, thats not the point. The point is teaching techniques and learning how to flow from one to another when needed. Then there is the 'what if' scenarios for when things don't work according to plan..... Please, don't get me started on MMA!
These techniques are assuming a certain response at every part. A real Kenpo expert knows every possible change in response and how to deal with it. And...I have to bring this up. MMA isn't a self defense activity. Almost never does a trained fighter attack someone. All martial art defense techniques are assuming a strong, aggressive, untrained attacker. The technique in the video shown is actually an outstanding technique, one of Kenpo's best. But of course, attackers don't react the same every time, so the follow up strikes change.

Master Larry Tatum demonstrates a very intense level of focus, skill, and concentration. This Instructor is no joke. Much respect Osu.
It's ridiculous
Yes he is. This only works with a limp opponent.

flawless technique! great kenpo!

Pretty sure you have are going to prison somewhere around step 9. Everything after attacking the heart with the hammer fist is aggregated assault.
Jeppe Boelsmand Or, “aggravated” assault....
Tried by twelve is better than carried by six. Plus it's not going to work perfectly.

Seems like a totally reasonable response to someone stepping towards you with an open hand ...although, he did fail to restomp the groin
Oh my Zeus.... the poor man.lol

Does anyone actually believe that this works as instructed in ,video? I LOVE Kenpo but only the block and the first 2 strikes will realistically work
He forgot about the part where you get 3 life sentences after
The opponent would be in the morgue and Larry would be in bed sleeping like a baby.
Lo golpeó,lo dejó fuera de combate,lo mato ,lo.volvio a matar y le hizo un fatality ajajja
I want to see this entire technique done in a REAL FIGHT w/someone who isn't a quadriplegic.
Dennis Tucker you are right... Lucky if you get in one of them...

That's called a fight. When the other person complies it's a demonstration. Resistance fight. Compliance DEMO. See now ?
Don't overdo it Larry
10, not 9
Not a good idea to let an opponent's head drop to a hard floor in sparring or otherwise
Staged for admiration purposes. Good luck with trying it on a person fighting you back.
Choreography was STUPIDNESS.!
this would never work in a billion years
Exactly
As a Black Belt in Kenpo, I can assure that if only one of the strikes lands...it would "work" ...
Also, me as a shotokan stylist, it would work very effectively. Every strike is fluid, comes from the base and hips, efficiently.
