  • A detailed look at re-stuffing a dual electrolytic filter capacitor can in a tube radio power supply circuit. This is from the SABA Freiburg W2 valve radio being restored.

    In some cases you can get lucky by adding distilled water to an old dry cap. Inject using a hypodermic needle in the top while applying an increasing voltage via a current limiting resistor. When the current drops, the electrolytic dielectric has reformed. Re-seal the hypo hole with wax.

    I liked this video so much that i subscribed. I liked what you did to keep appearance of originality. Those solder joints are excellent and as far as can see.... is the tip of the day! I am replacing the ones in my 1962 hallicrafters sr150 when they arrive and i will be using your method. Thank you!

    At around 9:20: Sprague used to include a couple of those little spring thingys with their replacement caps in the -60s. They called them "Quiggles", I think.
    They were designed to replace top mounted caps on PCBs. They were little copper springs with a layer of flux, then solder on them. You clipped off the old cap, trimmed the new one to length, slipped the little coils onto them, and just touched the coils with a hot soldering iron. No need to gain access to the bottom off the circuit board.
    I have been using that idea for at least 40 years. It makes a GREAT wire splice, particularly if you cover it with the same color of heat shrink tubing. It's much neater than the usual "twist the wires together, solder, then electrical tape the joint".

      John Casteel : I believe that was the name given to these little marvels. I use them quite often.

    Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Very informative. I like the wound wire trick for extension leads, will definitely use that. I am trying this and would like to fill the void to stabilize the caps inside so they don't rattle around. Any thoughts on a packing material? glass beads or sand?

      I've done a few of these, because the leads are short, they are fairly ridgid and they don't tend to move inside the can once the soldering is done. I usually just put a piece if heatshrink over the new caps bodies to hold them together and in place.

    I never restuff caps, authenticity is lost anyhow when you do this. I disconnect and leave the originals in place. Replace with modern caps under the chassis.

      I dont leave the old capciators in place,I might save it ,but I remove it to make the recapped radio something someone can follow leaveing old caps in can confuse ,a somewhat novice tech.like myself ,they old caps take up room too ,and I want it clean looking as possible as I can make it for me that not always easy.still leaning from on line techs,I like the on techs that will answer questions,but everyone has there own way of doing things.old radio are fun to listen to .

      I usually also do this, but there are a few cases there is no space to fit modern capacitors, so you must hollow the can and put new ones there. I usually used a flat dremel disc to cut off the rolled edge and pull the innards of the capacitor out. Heat helps a lot to soften the rubber seal, etc.

    I think of doing it this way, but I'm wondering if getting the capacitor material out comes with a health hazard? Do you know what type of capacitor material was used for radios of the 50es and 60es? Your videos are extremely valuable and insightful. Thank you so much! Greetings from Germany.

      In US caps there is a big change of PCB content, I don't think German caps should have it. Even though you should wash your hands, some acid or basic electrolite may be present.

      I think there were no PCB filled electrolytic capacitors. PCB was only used in oil filled caps (motor run caps, etc.).

    Thank you. How was the extension of the two negative leads grounded? If the external can were aluminum, to solder would be difficult, else impossible. I could not see it once the base were re-inserted into the can.

    • @electronicsoldandnew
      @electronicsoldandnew  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tom Watkins : see at 14:09 where I mention that the negative makes a good contact with the can itself, which is the negative as per the original capacitor. The can then makes contact with the chassis or, if insulated, has a washer which the negative is taken from.

      Great video, but I'm not happy personally with depending on the fortuitous negative contact of the wire with the metal can, I try to take the negative lead to an appropriate tag or ground point and solder it.

    I like seeing the n New caps so I no what work that I have done,after the radio is button up who going to see if anyways,and I don't leave in old parts that is just lazy,unless the part is to hard to remove,New caps give you more room.too

    Could always use a lathe with suitable forming and rolling tools to open and close the old aluminium cases. Or even face remove part of the rolled lip (using ordinary turning tools) to make it easier to start unrolling the sealed edge. Assuming you have a lathe, WHICH YOU SHOULD HAVE ANYWAY.

    Cut collar off with a rotating tube / pipe cutter for a clean cut.

  • @electronicsoldandnew
    @electronicsoldandnew  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    No need for that. Just use some hot glue blobs in various spots around the caps so the fit snugly when you push them in.
