That radio with the 35A5 Loctal is the rarest of the rare. Those were the first year production models of the Little Jewel. That tube was already getting scarce, so they switched to the 35L6GT for the rest of production.

I suspect the 35Z5GT rectifier with dimple in the glass red plated at one time causing the glass to melt. Interesting video!

SH refers to the metal shell of the metal octal tubes - its almost always connected to pin 1 on the metal version and usually not connected to anything on the glass version if applicable.

    Hi Shango,
Any video you make is pleasure to watch, and it would be interesting to see how the second radio will end up.
About J-hooking: I have a T600 ZTO I bought on EBay that I recapped (It did worked well with an exploded bumble bombe across the line cap), I used J-hooking in some areas of the chassis as not to stress the tube sockets.
One consideration one has to make is where you live and the availability of parts, I live in Israel, so any part I would need for an American radio will have to be ordered from abroad.
So, if I can do the servicing with minimum disturbance to these brittle parts, that's what I will do.
By the way, the T600 works great with a step-down transformer from 230V to 117V.
    Best Wishes,
    Moshe.

The dangerous part of lead solder is inhalation of fumes while soldering . Not touching it would be second in my book because after working with it
you should wash your hands with soap and water! Dry the hands with paper towels and not a cloth . Short in tube caused low output volume!

That tube tester is NOT just an emission tester, it's a full mutual conductance tester. Not only tests for emission, but measures actual gain of the tube (not diodes though, can only test diodes for emission).
ALL metal octal tubes have pin 1 connected to the metal can. 'SH' is shield.
OK with the gloves, though I don't think just touching solder will poison you unless you have a habit of licking your fingers. I've been using lead solder for over 50 years in the hobby (never was a professional electronics repair man or worked on any electronic assembly line) and have never had any symptoms of lead poisoning. Still, wearing gloves is cheap protection, especially since you work on so many sets that have had rat shit in them (THAT can get you sick!), not to mention high voltage. Also those blue nitrate gloves are much better than the thinner latex ones (I swear, when I wear the latex gloves paint thinner will soak through them).

Looks like this is the Little Jewel Refrigerator Radio 📻, but in this episode, it's time for a recap. Maybe a re-tube. I think this had an operational dial light in your last video 📹. I don't know 👌 the condition of the dial cord. Ya said this little radio 📻 sucks cool 😎 air into the bottom, and warmer air, out the vents in the back of this radio 📻. It must have a built-in internal fan, for longer tube, and capacitor life, if I'm not 👎 mistaken. Looks like 👍 the dial light is also working in this episode. Bad 👎 capacitors are lossy, loading down the push-pull audio output, or however it goes. I like 👍 that grille cloth. It seems so original to the radio 📻. I know 👌about the organic rubber wire in these sets. It decays over the years, and from tube, and capacitor heat. That speaker must be field coil. Be careful ❤, this being a series-string set. Radiotvphononut 📻 advises us of the same thing. Looks a little like a previous owner has soldered new capacitors, in with the old ones, without taking them out of circuit. Good way to cheat a customer out of his, or her money 💰, especially if this was a dishonest repair person. Now 👎 that ya had the speaker 🔊 turned over, it appears to be permanent magnet. Your friend, Jeff.

In my experience a overlapping solder joint that has enough overlap and is a good joint will hold good. What you see here are cold solders. Nothing will hold if it's a cold solder. Basically all modern electronics is made with overlapped joints (SMD) and they don't all fall apart.

    An example-
Kind of tough to get a Genie boom lift to work, when you decide that a 48 volt system based on a 8 six-volt batteries in series, really wants 8 six volt batteries in parallel.

The old RCA's were ▪︎▪︎▪︎REALLY ▪︎▪︎▪︎big on using metal jacket tubes and advertised that fact (where Zenith @ Philco etc. liked shields in comparison). The problem with them .... I've found is their being prone to this very thing. I don't know if its age & degradation of the overall sets, mis-handling & abuse or just use over time that causes this issue. Changing to GT's often fixed it if found in time, otherwise it's a full bore repair or oftened condemned. That's why some (as myself) prefer checking tubes before booting (not being critical here understand). Side note: Back in the day (for those who aren't aware) tubes were often sold and pushed to be changed multiple times over the normal life of a set (by tube manufacturers) (be it a radio or TV) (some twice or more a year), it was big money and an industry in itself. Now days 'what might have thrown out years ago' is considered a treasure. But again, you simply can't tell until they're tested. Having said that, I just purchased 300+ tubes from a collector and found over 123 with simple single &/or multiple defects. On the brighter side the price was right and I have another 170+ nonetheless.

Personally, I’d be more worried about all the other potential hazards found in old gear... rat droppings, whatever wonderful concoctions are leaking out of any electrolytic components, and any ionic heavy metals present...
Soldering temperatures isn’t anywhere near enough to vaporize the lead; but the smoke from the flux is pretty nasty.
Gloves, a fume extractor of some sort, and eye protection (yes, I have had solder bubble and pop and send liquid metal at my face) are all requirements for this and washing with a hand cleaner that has grit (like crushed pumice) is recommended.

31:00 Grid going negative is normal; it can be caused by high audio peaks forward-biasing the grid-to-cathode diode, in which case the grid acts like an anode, reverse-charging the plate-to-grid coupling capacitor, which then cuts the tube off for a short time. Other reason is space charge if the grid-to-ground resistor is high enough (e.g. more than 5 Mohms, that's not the case here).

    • @kuebbisch
      @kuebbisch 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Depends on the internal construction. That is why they have different designations. Could be a diode, or triode, tetrode, pentode, heptode... But in principle every tube with more than two connections (heater excluded, or counted as one connection) is a field effect device. So triodes which have a cathode, one grid and an anode are what you may know as a FET. If the grid (gate) is non existant, then it is a diode :-)

Sounds like somebody in the comments has tried to predict the end of the world 🌎. Overprotective with masks and gloves. Hey Shango066!! These are those nice refrigerator radios. Glasslinger has done ✔ a total restore in her past. The diodes probably go bad 👎 after the years, like 👍 capacitors. The tubes are also be expected to be weak. The dial cord looks great 👍, and the dial bulb works, and the radio 📻 dial also looks good 👍. You're not 👎 bad by using gloves or masks here, but it seems like 👍 in the comments, others think it's going to be the end times, or something. I'd replace the organic rubber wire in this. Sounds like 👍 a fire 🔥 engine in the background. Looks like 👍 you're using a permanent magnet speaker, but your field coil one is bad 👎. Just don't get shocked on this hot 🔥chassis (series-string) set. Maybe the one in the comments should touch it. LOL 😆 😆!! Good thing ya corrected the super-bright dial light bulb, and the over-volted tubes. This would burn 🔥 them up ☝ in short order. I think a capacitor is failing in such a way, that it's allowing excess voltage ⚡ to go through the circuit. Nice metal potentiometers. Not 👎 plastic junk. Looks like 👍 a few bumblebees in here. That red capacitor worries 😟 me a bit. Somebody soldered it in parallel with the other capacitor, hence the name "idiot". Dishonest repair person. This is worth the name "idiot". This thing sounds good 👍 right now 👎. Your friend, Jeff.
