Informative video. Thank you. I'm 62. I had a brief intro into the electric RCs in the early to mid-1980s. Recently rediscovered them with a RTR Traxxas Rustler 4X4 and a TRX4-Sport. If the military doesn't first use their RC UAV predator drones to extinguish all life on this planet I see a bright and profitable future for RC hobbies.
Very nice trip down memory lane. I was big into in 95. It fell of big time in 97 and my local track closed up shop. Lithium batteries and Brushless motors changed the game. The power and speed is amazing now.
Great summary video thanks for posting. ... Can you ad a tech summary video if not done all-ready?, when were brush-less motors introduced with AC technology ESC etc, transition from AM to FM to 2.4 ghz was mentioned, video re-edit with a bit more detail on the tech be greatly appreciated. ( Gyro assisted steering more recently, and soon to follow Drone assisted auto-steer etc. ) Industry taking another tech leap this decade, should help increase popularity :) Videos like this helps the RC Hobby lots.
I still remember the first time I saw a rc race as a kid in the 80s. I was hooked after that , I remember being in the hobby shop drooling over the Tamiya bruiser . My first hobby grade car was a used Rc10 . I used all futaba electronics and always sucked when some one was on your channel. Kids these days will not remember having to carry a bunch of Am and FM freq crystals In your rc box. Lol
Yeah i was out of the RC loop for the past 20 years and recently got back into it. Wow has the RC tech changed dramatically. I'm trying to catch up. I was using 1500 mah packs. Lipo seems kick ass. Brush less motors, etc.
@@justrelax3323 Hehe. I got back into around the middle of 2018, after not having an RC since being a kid. Now I have two big block Xmaxx trucks and one Outcast 8s big block truck that shred the grass and dirt doing 50+MPH and jumping 20+ ft into the air. People can't believe it when I do it 🤣
I was late to the game. My first RC was in about 1985. It was a (still is) Golden Arrow from radio shack. Maybe I need to drag it out and see if the nicad will take a charge. ⚡️⚡️😳If it does I’ll make a video and put a GPS on it. Memories... thanks for the spark. 👍👍
Thank you for taking the time to do this short history of the RC world. It was really informative and great fun to watch. Defo brought back some great memory's of some of the classic RC cars of the early days. Thanks again and all the best. Bows
Shout out to TH-cam for bringing this hobby together as well. Been into RC since a kid, of cause. Now I'm 50. Sure, I've not constantly had a RC controller in my hand but it's one of my go-to hobbies. Couldn't make the right decisions on purchases, problem solve or just see what other people are doing without TH-cam.
I first got into the hobbie\sport when 24 gig and brushless motors just came out I traded my whole set up for a high end gaming computer in 2014 ...fast forward to this last summer I bought a rustler XL 3 new ..then started mod.. $500 bucks later I have a car that is almost indestructible I have a Stampede and a SC 10 and will be getting a crawler kit early next year to sum up ...I am hooked again
I was at the 1991 World Championships at Freedom Hill race track in Michigan, not racing but spectating. I raced that track religiously until it closed in 2003
Excellently produced, I grew up throughout most of this time (born in 1972), I remember the release of all this kits as a kid. Great time in the RC world then.
This was really good. I'm just getting back into the hobby with my old XXX car for now, and this filled in a lot of info for me on what has happened. The interview at the end was great!
Thanks for this video it took me back to my childhood days love this hobby then and now my Rc was a rc10 kit by team associated just picked up one for 20 dollars I’m a nitro guy five hpi savage and team associated mgt
Man back in 2010 the stock slash class made some of my best memories with racing. Nobody was serious, just there to have some fun and see who can get that truck around the corner without flipping.
Very nice video my friend , kind of emotional video. In 15:29 this driver Cody King is the guy that make educational and review new products videos from the Amainhobbies ?
Loved RC racing . In 95 i took 1st place in the Coca Cola challenge in Buffalo NY. It was a huge race back then . I ran my heavily modified JRXT 2wd stadium truck. That was my most prestigious win in my trophy room. You could travel all over if you were competitive enough.
Growing up in the early 90s all I thought about was RC cars and how I wanted one (the hobby version) so bad. Then when I grew up I bought one and loved it. It's cool to watch this video, I see old stuff i haven't seen in forever.
I started rc racing in the mid 80’s at my local track. I had a frog. Most of the guys had Tamiya cars back then. I raced all the way until brushless came out. I think I raced professionally until 01. I was only racing Nitro 1/8 and 10th on road in the summer months and off-road in the winter months.
My R/C car was in 1987 my mom paid $250 I'll never forget it ever since then I've been into RC cars I love the sport I saw one of my buddies in this video I'm going to find it and put a timestamp
Fantastic video brings back so many memories. RC cars was a huge part of my life as a kid kept me out of trouble and grew into my passion for building cars me and my son are still building kits every year for well over 15 years.
I really enjoyed this and passed it around. I lived parts of this through my 64 years and it made me smile and tear up just a little. Thanks for the ride.👌👍👍And now I've subbed.😊
I was there. In the 80s anyway. RC 10 was my holy grail. Cant believe i butchered it for parts not too many years ago. Oh well. Im glad electric has advanced so far.
Nice video! I still remember seeing that stampede in a folder in the 90's. For me it started early 00's. With a hpi savage 25. Everyone had one or those large fg marders. Later on i started 1/10 rc drifting. Way back in 2005. Crazy how fast that evolved and gained popularity over the years. From grabbing any 4wd on road chassis you could find (yes even nitro) and putting it on home made tires to purpose build carbon brushless drift machines. Did alot of competition driving till about 2013. Those battles were intense! Quick changes in the rules and my interest in real cars made me decide to stop. Still have everything though, even the savage that started it all for me!
I loved this, my first was the tamiya f-150, 1983,I was 12, a pretty lucky kid. Moved on to rc10, jrx2, yokomo dogfighter, etc....., almost 48 years old now, still doing R/C
They forgot to mention Masami hirosaka and Magic Joe Johnson during the 90's era. Been to RC for 30 years and i still kept some old vintage rc10s and losi xx. Once a while still joinning the local hobby shop race in Malaysia. Also tribute to Brain Kinwald... RIP Brain... Gone but not forgotten. Awesome video...thumbs up
I often wondered what happened to Brian. He was the guy to beat in the late 90s. Perhaps we also need honourable mentions of Cliff Lett, Kevin Moore and Jürgen Lautenbach. And add that Gil Losi Sr started the Variflex skating/rollerblade company before Team Losi came about.
I really enjoyed the video since I've been into RC since the 80's. I just want to give some feedback. I think it was a little bit too US centric not mentioning any brands outside the states. I also think you missed one very important part of the resurgence of electric and that is LiPo and brushless motors. You mentioned new Radios like 2,4GHz but this is a much bigger game changer for the industry. Thanks for doing the video and keep up the great work! Would love to see a 2.0... 😉
I really enjoyed this video. I think you guys did a great job putting this together. Great job. Maybe you could do an indepth videos on different classes of RC cars. Very well done!
Thanks for watching it I'm glad you like it! I made the video because I couldn't find really any videos about it. It was fun to make and learn about the history of RC racing! :)
Having been into RC in the 70's and 80's its geat to see some of this old stuff. However the influence of the European RC has been overlooked in your piece. 1/8' on and off road lead the world innovation wise for a long time until the mid 80's.
Great video man, brought back lots of fond memories. I started racing in the early 80s with the associated rc10. Great times. I'm now into tamiya kits and gmade sawback.
I was able to buy a used Hotshot back in the day. I remember going to the local toy store which sold all the Tamiya and Kyosho stuff. I always asked the dude at the counter to show me the Hotshot. Didn't have the money for one for a long time because I was still in Jr High / High school. Finally had a summer job and bought a used one with a K.O radio. I was so excited to finally have one. Those were some good times. Still have it too!
I used to be big into that. In 1983 I bought an Team Associated RC500 (a 1/8 scale nitro car) along with two friends and then we met more people into it and formed a club. So in the 80's we were racing them in a circuit with two other clubs. We always had to clean the parking lot surface and lay down all this lumber to form a track. We had a trailer to store it in and used the top of it for a driver's stand. We sure spent plenty of money and had a lot of fun. I remember too after one of our club members (a Team Associated driver) won the world championship in 1987 that was the end of the RC500 for some reason. Then we went and bought Serpent Excels or BMT's. I got the Serpent. Both these cars were way better than the RC500. Anyway, that was the "heyday" of this hobby too. That's when new technologies were constantly coming out. Full suspension had just come out on the RC500 when we got them. Then there were 2-speeds, quick change rear wheels, more rubber compounds. More powerful engines and better tuned pipes. Also we went from the Futaba "box" radio to the pistol grip. Computerized lap counting too. All this was when I lived on Long Island, NY.
I really did enjoy watching your video. It was cool to see some of the cars I had in the past decades I still have most of them. My first was the Tamiya Sand Scorccher in 1980. And I still have my RC10 gold pan. Mostly into Crawling these days. Keep up the good work and make some more videos. Thanks.
Great video! i've been a huge RC nerd since the early 90's. Our local club always maintains a box stock class so the rich guys cant pay to win.. just pure fun! Ill probably race till i die!
This is great, well done! Sub'd. I got my start in 1991/2 with a TA Gold Pan, just got back into the hobby a couple yrs ago...Wow what a difference between now & then. TY for a great video.
I'm working on more videos coming soon. I will probably post a preview this upcoming week! :) Thanks for watching the history of RC racing. We just hit 10k views and 154 new subscribers! If we can get to 1000 total subs that would be great! Stay tuned for more! :D
Had to watch this again. I really like this i just find myself wanting more every time it ends. Is there any way you would consider revisiting it to do an extended version. I for one would certainly enjoy and appreciate it. Regardless i really enjoyed it thanks again.
No surprise why this video came up in recommended - I've been watching videos in preparation for picking up my first off-road RC car this weekend. I'm getting the Traxxas TRX-4. I owned a Sprint 2 Drift a few years back but I lost interest in that and sold it. Can't wait to go trail crawling!
The track at the 10 minute mark is Lake Park in Tampa Florida and would be the Winter Champions race. We had a very active club and I want to say we had 400 entrants every year.
Thanks so much I really mean that. Brings me back and helps me show my kids why their college tuition has been spent on tiny trucks, JK. Those where the best times 3 minutes on a nicad and you where happy
I was turn marshalling 1/8 scale buggy races back in 98. I hadn't thought about that time in my life in a long time until I came across this video! Thank you for the cool video!
Great video.... I started in the early 1970s. I still own 27 different nitro and electric cars and trucks. I've never considered them antiques but I guess they are. I've still got my Tamiya frog. All original. And a monster crusher nitro with a original 3.5 nitro motor. And all my cars and trucks still working. Maybe it's time to sell them and let the new generation enjoy them. I wonder who would buy them? 1/10 scale.
I LOVE RC brother and this video was just great. I'm in so cal and rc is basically underground here. My buddy and I go to skateparks to bash to get folks attention and then we tell them about the hobby. The one thing that is preventing most ave folks to be able to own an rc is the high costs of the rc and the electronica involved. The racers are finicky and think they're the best son far as to offend a regular basher. I came from bashing but can drive. I don't like that that dynamic exists within the rc world. The "dumb" bashers fuel the economy of the sport. If it weren't for bashers, no one would be racing any rc cuz the companies simply wont make enough revenue.
Not in my day. All the best tracks and hobby shops were in LA/Orange County . Went to OC at least once or twice a week to race and buy parts/cars. Saw and raced with rc pioneers every week. Met Masami Hirosaka,10 time ifmar wc, got him autograph on my yokomo YRX10. I paid $400 used, hard to get yokomo cars , especially that one, burned in fire.
I was there in the hay days of both slot car and r/c car racing in the SF Bay Area. They were magic. But, now into rock crawling in the Reno area. Thanks for the memories.
I was racing off-road 1/10 electric buggy and stadium truck, onroad electric sedan 1/10 onroad, nitro 1/8 onroad, nitro 1/10 sedan, nitro stadium truck and nitro 1/8 buggy back in 98-03. Don’t know what happened to nitro 1/10 Stadium Truck, but it was really fun to drive. The hobby is not as popular as it was back in the my day. We would have 30-60 cars in one class. Now they can’t even fill a full a main. The cost of everything killed the sport for budget racers who were still competitive. Now it cost 1k for just a simple electric buggy with all its electronics. We would buy the top of the line buggy for 300 with everything 20 years ago
The reason why people wanted nitro was simple, battery life was short but today it has been extended, back in the day however, RC wasn’t the best in value in terms of quality back in the day, I love nitro rc cars, they look the coolest of their body and chassis and also, it’s realistic nitro parts for the build, these things fair better and kind of serve cheap depending on price of an nitro car and the components to make the car run, I like electric rc cars but nitro takes the cake in terms of longevity. This video is very interesting, maybe I was too young to know about the history of rc cars!
This was fun to watch. Something that I noticed was missing is the RC Drift racing class. Things have progressed quickly for the newer class and are taking it notes from pro drift racing including judging and large scale competitions. I remember it starting with kits like the HPI E10 which is an awd chassis and has now gotten to be completely RWD chassis from makers like Yokomo and MST. The scale cars can be beautiful as well, looking just like the full size counterparts!
That was amazing brought back a lot of memories. It would be cool to see a history of crawlers/trail trucks because that was such a monumental change of growth in the industry, literally doubling it. Like subbed and sharing. THANKS!
I miss seeing the monster truck racing videos. Not enough of those. Like the savage, MGT, mammoth and t-maxx duking it out on a track. Guessing that was in the 2000's as well. I had a track near me when I started RC 20 years ago (I was 24 at the time, could finally afford it), but they only allowed onroad and 1/8th buggy, then they closed a few years later. Got another that's an hour away, similar rules. I never ran an RC on an action "RC" track. Tons of fun on a bmx track though. Just with the lack of a drivers stand, your limited as to how far you can go. Kind of curious if nitro will make a comeback in a few years. Brushless kind of took over. I'll likely keep the nitro's I have until I die, but brushless sure makes things more convenient.
Loving this one thanks for sharing very important information giving thanks blessed love to all knowledge is power hopefully everyone pays attention keep up the good work 🙏🙏🙏🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲💪💪💪
Awesome video. I had a lot of those cars and more. Lost 25+ cars including 1/8 serpent ,in a fire. Raced on & off road, gas & electric, in the late 90s all over la/oc with some of the some sponsor drivers. Once took of work early to ranch pit to buy the short wheel base chassis for my xx buggy. Had a chance to race in the ifma on road worlds at revelation raceway didnt. Miss those days.
My 2 sons and my self loved RC racing ,one of the the oval, the youngest stadium racing ,me both since I was the car owners 😀

My first rc car was the associated rc10 original gold pan. I remember when mi1 brought out their chain driven 4wd conversion for it.
FREAKING AWESOME, THANKS FOR SHARING. REALLY CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT VIDEO.
Great video! i've been a huge RC nerd since the early 90's. Our local club always maintains a box stock class so the rich guys cant pay to win.. just pure fun! Ill probably race till i die!
How good is this, took me way back!
great video! would have loved to see a little more about the T-Maxx era and all the new people it brought to our hobby.
Very nice video and good work with it, thanks for sharing 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Awesome video I really enjoyed watching this I'm a huge RC car fan
This is great, well done! Sub'd. I got my start in 1991/2 with a TA Gold Pan, just got back into the hobby a couple yrs ago...Wow what a difference between now & then. TY for a great video.
Thanks for putting this together, a fantastic film. Really enjoyed it 😉👍🏽
I’m a 1/5th scaler would love to hear or see more of them!!!
I'm working on more videos coming soon. I will probably post a preview this upcoming week! :) Thanks for watching the history of RC racing. We just hit 10k views and 154 new subscribers! If we can get to 1000 total subs that would be great! Stay tuned for more! :D
This is awesome
LOL Glad you liked the video! :)
1/10 scale.
We used to put 10 & 8 turn motors in Golden Arrows and smoke RC10’s and they never knew what hit’em. Good times.
Great video really enjoyed learning about the roots of rc
Gotta love hearing Scotty announcing races. He is the best there is.
Wow. This must have been a great deal of work to make. Thank you.
All i have to say is Thank You! Great video so many memories came back and i am only in my 30’s haha... again great vid and definitely subscribing
Love the Brian Kinwald mention at the end. One thing about the video, no mention of Masami Hirosaka, just a couple of pics??
RC bodies looked so much cooler back then. What happened
Millennials.....
you wanna look cool or do you wanna go fast? Lol
That brings me back to my younger days 👍
Now do one on rc boat racing 👍
Fantastic man! Learned a lot, loved it? Could you make a rc basher history too? Please?
Thank you for watching I'm so glad you liked the video! :) Thank you
Nice job Cole! Loved it! So interesting!
Thanks :)
This was really great! Cheers
This will be fodder for my podcast. Thanks for the material! Lol
Great video 👍🇺🇸!! I love, always loved rc cars! Especially the ones from the 80's and 90's.
Great video, it’s good to see how we got where we are today, good stuff 👍
One word.
Inflation.
Yokomo was there during the AWD days too! Yokomo DP and later the DIB
Thanks for the nice overview!
For sure glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing athletes.
Thanks for the entertainment!
Lovely old footage and photos. Thanks!
That was great thank you so much.🏁👻👍
That was amazing brought back a lot of memories.
