  • Checking the valve clearance on my 2014 Yamaha MT07
    Part 2 video: • MT-07 | HOW TO camshaf...
    Part 3 video: • MT-07 | HOW TO Valve c...
    Parts to remove:
    - bodyword
    - fueltank
    - seat
    -coolant
    -radiator
    special tools needed:
    -14mm sparkplug socket
    -14mm hex key for the alternator cover
    -angle gauge for a socket set
    -feeler gauges 0,10-0,30mm
    You dont need to remove the oil from the engine. Make sure the engine is completely cool before you measure the valve clearance.
    I used the Haynes manual for this maintenace job. It shows all the steps to do this yourself.

    Thanks for showing how it's done. Not much different from other modern bikes, but good to know that it can all be done with the engine in the frame, etc... All the details necessary were shown here unless you don't know what a puck kit looks like and how to do subtractive math to re-shim :)

    Thanks for the video. Today I've started doing my valves and that cylinder-head cover is an absolute pain in the ass. I don't have any service history but, there's high probability no one ever done this job until now at 62'000km. Spark plugs were quite black, intake valves were like yours around 0.15, sadly same on exhaust except one that was on the limit. Just to make bit more annoying I didn't have replacement parts, radiator support is bent, cable ziptie holder drops.

    • @twowheels90

      Yeah its quite a lot of work. And waiting for parts is not the best. But who has every shim size in stock at home?
      I almost at 80.000 km, so I might have to do it again too.

    That weird, when cylinder 1 is at TDC, the mark on the intake had the I mark facing the line on the hexaust... I guess i should align as per manual after with the I mark aligned with top cylinder head.

    After how many kms valve clearance is necessary for Yamaha bikes?

    • @2lbsTrigrPull
      @2lbsTrigrPull 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      On the MT-07 engine Yamaha schedules valve check every 40.000km. But I have checked mine at 20.000km and found one exhaust valve completely off.

    • @RavingDrifter
      @RavingDrifter 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi @@2lbsTrigrPull, may I ask why you did the check at only half the required milage? Did you notice power loose or noise?

    • @2lbsTrigrPull
      @2lbsTrigrPull 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RavingDrifter Nah, I was just curious what the clearances are and because I made a spark plug/air filter change I've gone the extra mile to check and adjust the valves and now I'm happy that I did. I did not notice any huge power loss or something similar. But when you already stripped the bike to the bone why not doing that too? I will check my engine at 40k km again and if the clearances don't change much, I will leave it alone till it hits 80k km and then check again. Some maintenance schedules are over the top like changing the brake system seals every two years or the brake lines every four. That's unnecessary. But first valve check at 40k km is a little stretched in my opinion and I'm not hard to that bike either.

    I was going to buy a brand-new Yamaha MT 07 this September 2020 just watching you I've scrapped the idea I will not be buying a new bike Yamaha as just lost a customer.
    I like to do my own maintenance but what I don't like is bad design work through incompetent design practices, that try to make more money out of servicing a bike than buying it. because that's what the design is about today, you don't just sell the product you have a long-term income from it through servicing because you've made the servicing so complicated that people have to take it to the local Yamaha dealer.
    I will not buy into that con. so I'm staying with my old bike with its lock and nut tappets design. it's more people friendly. but I'd like to thank you very much for pointing this out to people like me so we can avoid this hassle and save money at the same time.

    • @twowheels90
      @twowheels90  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel your pain, owning a older bike can have it's upsides! However I believe that this style of valve lift with buckets is used by most of the new bikes...
      Does have performance and reliability advantages over the old style.

      @@twowheels90 I have been riding since 1972 and I have never found any drawbacks in riding old motorbikes.
      they are easy to fix easy to maintain and great fun to ride.
      if I went riding with my mates and one of the bikes broke down 99.9% of the time we could fix it by the side of the road and carry on enjoying our day, you can't do that with modern bikes.
      you can't even get near the spark plug on modern bikes.
      with modern technology they could have made them even better instead companies when the easier route with overcomplicated engines. so they can make money not only by selling it but by maintaining it.
      because that's the bottom line making motorbikes unmaintainable by the rider.
      If BMW and Ducati can make air cooled motorbikes that past EURO 5 then why can't the massive Japanese to the same.?
      Even Harley-Davidson are still making air cooled bikes.
      It's all one big con and the biking general public have brought into it.

      Try thr nc750s...ok boring and 50% less power than mt07 but very easy to adjust valves. Just remove radiator, valve cover and adjust by locknut...my scooter you just take one plastic cover very easily, remove valve cover and slide the rocker arms to change the shim. A lot easier than this modern bikes. Also, brands dont expect customers to do valve checks. Before reaching 42k most customera are selling the bike and even if not checked, i dont believe the engine will dye before 100000km...

    • @Fekillix
      @Fekillix 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a once per 40.000km interval. On many Honda bikes for example with screw adjustment it is once at 1000km, then at every 12k km. I would rather do this once than do it 4 times on a Honda. But if you want easy valve clearance adjustment buy a Honda NC700/NC750. Everything is super easily accessible and it can be done in 30 minutes.

    • @421CentralIowa
      @421CentralIowa 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's a balance point somewhere when it comes to good power, fuel economy, etc... where they use pucks in buckets rather than threaded tappet adjusters. I get not wanting to own something complicated, but this doesn't seem THAT complicated. It's the same story as a Triumph Bonneville engine. Plugs are buried in the heads and you have to pull the cams to shim. My W650 is similar, but the tappets are on springs and you push them sideways to get at the pucks which is cool. But yeah, it's not a Honda CB350 from the early 70s, for sure... I'm willing to put up with the complication here in the name of power and fun. The design is complicated because you're getting 55mpg, 75 horsepower, and reliability. You'd hate owning a Ducati with 7500 mile timing belt and desmodromic valve adjustment intervals ;)
