Hey Scoutcrafter! Those are some really neat birdhouses you made. You might mention to folks that if you are going to use it for actual birds, you need to have a way to clean out the old nests. Also you can go online to the Wildbird website and they will tell you the exact dimensions for whatever kind of bird you want to attract. www.birdsforever.com/boxdim.html Size of the box, size of hole, height from the bottom to the hole, etc. Where I live, I always have to put a baffle on the pole that the birdhouse is on to keep snakes out of there. Take care. 👍🏼

Your videos are such a great distraction. My kids have been off school for over a week, and wont go back untill at least the beginning of April. The cardboard birdhouse was a great idea for the young viewers to participate. My daughter can cut the cardboard with her safety scissors, tape it up herself and I can help seal it from the weather. She's only 6, but likes watching your videos. Great TH-cam creators like you are more important now than ever. You are helping bring some sense of normalcy into our crazy lives.
Thank you for all the work you put into this channel.

So I just got done watching one of your clamp restoration vids, and I fell in love with the SME 218s you painted green. Man, if I could own one clamp for my shop it would be those. One thing I've found in making birdhouses is to make the entrance hole out of plastic or metal. Otherwise, the starlings will peck out the wood until it's big enough for them to get in. And then you won't have any nice songbirds, but just those nuisance starlings. And it's good to study how big a box and hole are needed for the desirable birds in your area.

Hi John, like the birdhouse challenge. I would like to make a couple of suggestions 1- add some type of screen or small expanded metal to the jnside face just below the opening to allow the hatchlings to climb out. Also, avoid placing the birdhouse on a tree to avoid easy access by predators. I prefer to drive a piece of 1" metal conduit or pipe into the ground and attach it to that. Thanks again.

Those birdhouses are beautiful. I like the practical idea of a clean out door. Squirrels will also use perches in order to get to the eggs. Best to avoid them. Also, I have to tell you that I enjoyed your restoration video of the Blackhawk 151 multiwrench. You have inspired me to clean up the one I have. Still in excellent condition but has a lot of old paint in it. It's not quite obsolete yet. It is still useful on my grandparents' 1948 Ford Super Deluxe. Best regards from the Intermountain West.

I must have used hundreds of feet of threaded rod. Something we did quite often was sandwich a block wall up high between 2 twelve inch channels with bolts made from threaded rod then you could remove the wall beneath it.

20+ years ago, I bought 100 - 1" x 12" x 12' pine boards from an old guy. There was a pile of 1" x 12" x 23" scrap boards. I asked about them and he gave them to me. I setup my table saw and radial arm saw for production. I made about 3 dozen bluebird house kits with all nail holes pre drilled for my son's kindergarten and Cub Scouts. I also made a giant set of Lincoln Logs for his school. Good Luck to Us All, Rick

Great tips for the threaded rod. Used the cut-with-nut-on method many a time myself, but am a bit more sloppy with the jig. I just grab whatever blocks I find of scrap wood and try to hold them and the rod together properly to get them to stay in the vice. I think next time I will be making a Scoutcrafter threaded rod cutting jig and likely make the job go faster! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

You may have just motivated me to finish a birdhouse I started years back when a friend had a restoration wood shop. I did it after hours one night just messing around with scrap wood he was tossing. I got it together and never finished it and I always thought it could use a clean out door now I think I just gave myself an excuse to work on it oh and you pointed our removing the perches under the entrance that I never thought about... I even have a old really tall post I was going t remove that might make a good mounting post as its 8 or 9' in the air. It's definitely spring in So Cal and this has been a wet march (for California), I would imagine the sparrows will be busy over the next few weeks and would appreciate it.

When using a hack saw note that on quality blades a short portion of the teeth at one end of the blade are pyramid shaped instead of hooked like the rest of the blade. This is for starting the cut as the teeth will cut in both directions. Once the cut is established you don't have to saw like a madman. Mild steel should be cut at 80-120 feet per minute so even, full strokes (about 50-70 per minute) will cut the work quickly with a sharp blade. Like John, coat the work with cutting oil or brush the cutting oil onto the blade. You will note that even with a moderate stroke speed, the cutting oil will smoke in the cut.
A good sturdy hack saw frame is essential for good work. Cheap flexible frames are just about useless. You can't make a straight cut for love nor money. It takes a sturdy frame to put enough tension on the blade for good cutting action without bending or twisting the blade while cutting. This is especially true for delicate work like cutting screwdriver slots.
    Cheers from NC/USA

I always felt it the Perch Thing was a Myth and there is evidence to back my thoughts. I'll just paste some research from a website here ~ "Experiments in two locations were conducted with the hexagonal birdhouse to determine if predation is a problem, and if birds prefer a perch. Every year we have found that when two birdhouses are identical except for the presence/absence of a perch are compared, the chickadees and wrens have always picked a birdhouse with a perch. No young have been lost due to predation."

Good News: I just got gas @ Shell (used rewards) for $1.66 gallon. $1.69 - $0.03 per gallon Shell Rewards.
Bad News: On way back, I passed the NSA building and the parking lot was FULL, compared to all other places that are empty due to city being closed. Spying there is 24/7... regardless! =O
PS - Bird is the word! =P

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  4 ปีที่แล้ว

LOL- I love Jays and crows and ravens but they will eat young chicks if given the chance... I go thru over 100lbs of seed a month so my Bluejays don't bother the young....

@@ScoutCrafter Good to hear!! The only birds I really have trouble with are the starlings. Lets just say ole Red Rider is welcomed at my house! I only wish that the Cooper hawks spent more time going after what the French love with a little butter!!

@@ScoutCrafter IKR. Thought the virus lasted three days on paper. I was just asking since it might not have occured to those looking for a simple diversion that they could use those same skills to make a library.

I'm not at home the whole day during the week, only on weekends. I still got the "honour" to go to work every day. My employer already gave me an exception letter for the case they'll establish a curfew, stating that I'm an employee of the company and my presence is required in the plant in Frankfurt to perform my work. And in case of further questions the contact dates of my superior. It also includes my adress, date of birth, nationality, adress of the plant and my personnel number. We also implemented some kind of a shift system. Created two teams, one is working from 0500 hours to at last 1315 hours. The next team arrives at 1345 hours and work until 2200 hours. No mixing, no changing of teams. I'm in the late team...the advantage is two hours of night shift premium of 25% which are tax free. The early team only gets one hour between 0500 and 0600 hours. This whole thing is limited to 1 month, except authorities shut us down before or they establish a curfew where only employees of "vital companies" are permitted to leave the house for work.
And here are still people on the street, walking with their dogs, go to the grocery store or to work if they can't work from home. Restaurants switched over to pick-up or deliver the food, you can't eat there anymore sitting on a table.
BTW: There are not many shops permitted to open up, only groceries, restaurants (pick-up and delivery only), pharmacy. But most important: Hardware stores and stores for gardening supplies....

It's the same here- Social distancing is a must. There are some young people who ignoramus's the warnings but that is the ignorance of youth. I really think this will add lasting changes in the future.. It might be a good thing in the long run.
