I have a similar remote reading thermometer designed to monitor truck exhaust temperatures, has a really long armoured capillary tube too. Our last house (1991) had about twenty-five large pressure gauges display mounted on a basement wall...the seller left them undesturbed, for $25. He said the gauges came from Great Lakes freighters.
The probe you cleaned up is called a thermo well. The actual temp probe is inside the thermo well. Usually these thermo wells are stainless steel. The temp probe is usually brass or copper.
You can use an old spade bit as a firewood splitter too, we had a few of those in the military. Fairly effective and safer than an axe for all the recruits that, to put it mildly, varied in intelligence and technical know-how.
A great idea! I bet you can take one of those and make a nail/tack puller by cutting in a "V" shape to the hole and maybe bending the spade at a sight angle. What do you think?
The scraper is a great tool. Absolutely necessary for a mechanic. Very handy for carpentry too. I never count my tools. The Old Tool Mailing Group's motto. Designed to let the person being interrogated to say with a straight face and a clear slate for confession that they don't know. I did turn down a bag of them that was laying on the shelf at the Restore this morning. I know I didn't want to have to add onto the spade bit rack.
Sold! John I’m making one mate 😃 you sold it straight away! The amount of glue and sorts of debris that gets stuck to my work bench , that scraper is just job 👍 cheers Rob
You still have me looking for Snoopy and he doesn’t move. Thanks for your content. I look forward to it. I own a handyman service and have always loved tools. You’ve taught me a lot. I’m also an Eagle and proud vet. I’m sure you and myself would get along great. Take care.
Great job on the scraper.I'm glad you left the # 1 showing, that way you know this is the "1" to use!! I live in Wester NY about a hour from Rochester where that "temp" gauge was manufactured.
Very cool idea on the scraper from a spade bit! I remember when you scored that box of acetate handles on Ebay and it sure is great getting to see you put one into use. Having that water come in through that box breaks my heart--what's a guy to do? I'm glad you didn't let it phase you too much and it dried up quick enough. Cool show as usual and always a treat, thanks Scoutcrafter!
The scraper is a good idea. I see those spade bits in the 25 cent bins at flea markets often. No, none of mine are burned up, but finding one that is will be easy!
I watched a video several months ago a guy making a scraper fron an old bit. So I made also, it works GREAT. Now I see you making one also. This might make a good challenge.😅 Thanks
Question for you John what is the functional purpose of the hole in the head of the spade bit? I'm sure it's not there for decorative reasons. I know people claim it's there for feeding cable but I just don't see it, the hole a spade bit bores is so large I don't see feeding a cable being an issue.
Matthew I too was wondering the same thing, I too have heard the hole was for pulling wire but it doesn’t sit well with me. I could see if the bit was 12” long but why on short bits? I’m with you- still wondering. 😃👍
Nice work on the scraper! I love shop built tools. Especially those made from "scrap". I've made several screw drivers from spade bits. I have a lathe so turning a handle is no big deal. I used brass pipe for the ferrule and epoxied the shank of the spade bit in place. One screw driver was for the cap iron screw on my antique hand planes and one was specially made for the brass nuts on saw handles.
Hello John.So nice that many think alike.I had made a same type of scraper about 28 months back.Though I do not use it much it is useful.Hope many more tool lovers make this.
This afternoon I will be ferreting through my old drill bit drawer. Then scrounging the scrap metal bin for old copper waterpipe for ferrule material. A quick fossick in the woodpile for a piece of gum tree, and it will be time to spin the lathe up. The good part about doing it yourself is that you actually start the project with the best quality materials.
I’m not sure about New York but in CT the utility is only responsible for the wire to the house and the meter. The customer is responsible for the wire running down the side of the house and the wire from the meter to the panel.
Nice job on the scraper. I did something similar about 6 months back. I used a 1/2" bit and but cut it shorter and ground the shaft into a hex to fit in the bit holder on my multi tool. I love that gauge. What a steal at $11 delivered. You need a 5gal bucket with a sump pump in it under the electrical box. Or if you have a drain in the floor you can make a Rube Goldberg funnel system you can erect when it rains.
Thank you, we always love usefull tool ideas, that is a good scraper. The thermometer would make🐯 a good display for a man cave, maybe mounted on a board with 4 - 5 other smaller gauges🐞 and hung on a wall.🐻
John, have you seen the new "sightmax" flap discs? they are transparent when spinning so you can see exactly where your glinding. amazing actually!! Thought it might interest you for the channel. all the best ❤️🇺🇸
Beautiful and really practical tool to make that is an amazing piece 👍 and yes I too love EBay but it really irks me also that they charge tax on all that used stuff like we guys buy what a scam.
Uou and i must watch the same videos because i saw a video about those scrapers. I've been picking up old used spade bits at pawn shops so i can make a complete set. Nicely done John
Gotta have the whole set. My local pawn shop sells old drill and spade bits 4 for a dollar. I have bought several old beat up spade bits to make these scrapers out of. I waiting to get all the sizes before i start making them.
LOL. ❤
Saw a guy on the tube make chiesels out spade bits. I do have old spades and will try the scraper idea my self. Good score on the e- bay find. Thanks for the video, appreciated it.
John, your ConEd water situation is giving me fits. If I gave whoever a blank check, money's no object, what fixes this? Btw, that scraper build was one of your best. I love it. I have an obsession over scrapers. I love them all and can't get enough of them.
I sort of passed by you on Sunday. Went to Staten Island for a youth bowling tournament. On the way there the gps sent me I95 to 695 to 278. On the way back it was just 278 to I95. About two hours in the morning, three hours to get home, and the was in the middle of the afternoon. Thank goodness my team was one of the first two eliminated.
Wise words,,, "never throw away old/spare tools",, Until,, you have to move house,, 😭😭,, I've just spent around 4 months getting rid of tons of stuff I thought I couldn't part with,, Absolute crying shame, but, it's time for a new start,, 😕🏡
Thats a well that the probe fits into that's so you could change the gauge without draining the tank or steam line without bringing the system down. Operating Engineer here retired yes just bend the tube back by hand.
NICE thermometer, Pal!. I got a hyfraulic pressure gauge I was going to put on the wood splitter about that size and it was just too big so it's still here. I sharpened all my spade bits but used to draw file putty knives and they made good scrapers too. And we can get 3 or 4 inches of rain after lunch/dinner and have a sunset that evening. Mountain tropics ate a hoot! Happy weekend and God Bless!
That scraper is as good as my Snapon. Heck of a deal on the temp gauge but probably because they sell other things. Someone said hey would you sell this for me? That person is less than thrilled and the guy selling stuff won't be asked to sell stuff so he wins as well. 🤣🤣 Be glad you had rain. We had 8" of wet snow.
Thanks John, I love me a homemade tool, one of my favourite go to scrapers I made from a 16" palette knife that had rusted through, I cut of the flexible part (about 9") and was left with a 2" scraper blades on a beautiful rosewood handle (full tang). You should be getting a refund on your electric bill, that water ingress is a disgrace - your basement is going to turn into one giant Electrolysis tank ! ⚡ That temperature gauge was a bargain, I know you don't mind paying for quality so I was going for $50 - shows what I know ! 😉
I know exactly what that guage is from. That went to a commercial sized boiler. They are still required to this day to have guages that large, but go much higher in temperature.
Loved the scraper! Totally innovative. The thermometer was reading over 100 degrees in your basement from what I could see. Is there an adjustment on it?
Temp and pressure gauges are commonly just thrown out. In a big power plant you have hundreds of them. 30 years ago they were fixed and calibrated. Now it all electronics
A really good deal I got once, was a Metabo 7 inch angle grinder for ten bucks at an estate/garage sale. I blew some dust out of it with compressed air, and it's working great.
You definitely know the shop culture by assuming that there are old spade bits lying around for repurposing. In my case you're right. I have several I didnt want to get rid of, so they look like good candidates for gasket scraping. Your DIY projects are cool because you tell us how to get parts like handles etc. In case we need them.
John, isn't there any way to shelter the leak source from the outside with some clever use of flashing? That is A LOT of water coming thru your electric box. We may be able to give some ideas to you if you posted some exterior pics. Would love to help out!
One time I asked for pointers on shaping my new brake line at the auto parts store. I was told that some people fill their brake line tubing with playground sand before bending / forming them, then blow out the sand with compressed air. I didn't end up trying it, but it sounded plausible. Maybe that will work for you?
I wish I would have known about cut off wheels when I built my t bucket. I cut everything with my hacksaw. I have a scraper made out of a file with an aluminum handle. It is wonderful for scraping contact cement off my table. That’s why we keep them broken tools. All you need is a need and a creative mind. When I was working I had to have shock proof boots and gloves up to 10 thousand volts. Just be careful when you have water coming out your electrical box. I want more videos to be entertained not a fried scoutcrafter! Thank You

That’s a hell of a rectal thermometer! Maybe for an elephant!
Great job on the scraper.I'm glad you left the # 1 showing, that way you know this is the "1" to use!! I live in Wester NY about a hour from Rochester where that "temp" gauge was manufactured.

I love when you pull out the box of acetate handles. They are gorgeous wish I could find some or buy some for file handles. Nice score John

It’s awesome mixing different materials. 😃👍
John, I know some folks in the industrial arts world who would kill for that thermometer! Oh, and great scraper idea!!

Absolutely- The fun making it is off the charts!
I thought they did something up on the pole to stop that leak! That looks crazy! The scraper is beautiful!

I’ve seen similar discs, great for getting that perfect facet! 😃👍

Nice job on the scraper. Well done.
It is crazy that the power company is not able to seal the power lines coming into the house. What a deluge.
Dave.
I have and older Snap On scraper that is similar in dimensions but that is much better looking and you made it yourself, awesome!
Nice work on the scraper! Subscribed!
Perfect gasket scraper. Looks total pro. Nice job.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and keep your videos coming please.
Wow great find!
Hey señor Juan, great video...be careful with the rain. Nice project and please let us always learn from you. Saludos desde México señor marino.
Nice Gasket Scraper
Hey John, great idea for a scraper, I have an old wood chisel ground down for a scraper.
I just love your lathe work. Cool tool.
Can't remember where but I also saw that scraper, Nice little project! 🛠👍😊

My Dad used spade bits for special patterns and designs and then used them for lathe turnings for one of a kind items. Bob from North Idaho
Thats a great idea and nice little project! Its definitely on my to do list now 😁

Awesome , a project for me.

Hello John, that was a great idea. 👍👍
Good idea on that scraper John. A guy needs a couple of them floating around. Thank You for sharing!!
I love how you repurpose tools
Nice job that's a sharp looking scraper
Ebay deal of the decade👍 scrapper came out nice Mr. John! Thanks
I will make one!
I enjoy these fabrications
That's a great idea on for a scraper

Ralph- When vertical the needle drops to its base detent. I should boil some water and see if it’s accurate mid range. 😃👍

I only get water when we get 2.5” of rain or more. That used to be a very rare occurrence but now it’s not so rare! 😂👍
awesome job
Scrapers like this are great for cleaning up glue squeeze out in tight corners on woodworking projects…

Is that bench grinder in your intro scenes a Redwing Dental Lathe? I picked one of them lately by accident and I really like it.
No mine is a Sears Craftsman however I did a video on the Dental lathe! They are great motors! 😃👍
Nice video.
Excellent repurposing! I can’t b all the acetate handles you have!
Frank- I love those things and bought a lot on eBay one year. 😃👍
Woah, tax on used stuff...Im sure the grubby hands of politicians saw BIG tax dollar signs the minute 'Used Car' sales hit a certain level.
' i have a (one box?) a few boxes of handle ' 😂
My problem is most of my spade bits are in good shape! 🫣😂👍
Okay, I've had enough, I'll be over first thing in the morning and we're gonna fix that leaking conduit or get electrocuted trying !! ⚡⚡😂
Where do you get spare handles? You found a ton.
