"Ogors are everything you want Gargants to be" is the truest statement I've heard about AoS all year. Guts out 4 life
The sylvaneth one comes with a giant tree with a giant sword.
Not just any giant tree, the kit lets you build ‘the’ giant tree, Durthu. Won’t be Durthu in Spearhead, but it’s cool how much variation you get in the box. Treelord can be 3 separate kits, same with the kurnothi, and the revenants can be 2. The only kit without options is the branchwych.
@@deifiedtitan not trying to split hairs here, but it's a 'Spirit of Durthu'. Durthu himself became so powerful he entered god status ;)
Sold!
And if you magnetise it, it can be ANY tree lord!
I think Seraphon should be in the top tier for one main reason. They are one of the few boxes where you can use multiples of the character in the box. You probably want at least 2 of the Carnosaur kits because you can make the other a Troglodon. Too many of the other kits have characters where you would almost never want a second iteration of meaning a second Spearhead box drops off significantly in value.
This, and for every troglodon/carnosaur you get a free foot hero as well
Also krox look super strong from what we’ve seen so far
Yeah its top tier for coalesced.
It's also one of the easier ones to paint.
You could do it 10 paints or less and still make it look damn good.
Seraphon player. Troglodon are crap.
I think the reason why Spearhead is so hyped by the community is, that it is the sweetspot between Warcry and AoS that currently does not exist. I totally get your point Rob, that a wargame is complex and should not be reduced to a flat and boring experience. But it looks like that people want something bigger than Warcry (otherwise they would just play this) but less complex than 2000 points. There are still a lot of rules but you have less units with less profiles and less abilities you have to remember and plan with. In the ideal world people could just play 1000 points but we all know that it does not work the way it should. Now they get offered Spearhead which is the closest to that sweetspot in between those two games and are really excited. Only the future is going to tell if they stick with it or not.
Honestly.. sometimes people also just don´t have the time for 2k games. Sometimes people just want to meet up in the veneing after work for 2 hours and have a fun time. And it´s honestly a shame that the game is so terrible balanced for like anything under 2k points.
I got into Warcry not because of the scale as much as the creativity on display with the warbands breaking away from the classic factions normally depicted.
I was at the dallas open spearhead event and played with sylvaneth. Honestly, it was the most fun ive had with warhammer in a long time. AMAZING system
I think the most exciting thing for me in Spearhead is that I can pick up an army using the rule of cool, and then I don't have to spend days to make a list. Because it's all in one box I consider trying to play KO which I woldn't want to buy, collect, and paint 2000 points just to try them out.
Hope Ironjawz get their own Spearhead since it looks like they will be their own army again.
They might outright split them up now that the third wheel of the Orruk cart fell off.
50/50 they get randomly squatted.
@@rotm4447 Ironjawz? nah they just released new sculpts for the range wayta
@rotm4447 already showed the 4e Warscroll for the Shaman with the Ironjawz keyword, so unlikely.
They are very popular and sell very well@@rotm4447
As a fellow Tzeentchian I recognize that your dismissal of our Spearhead box is just another piece in the great plan of The Changer of Ways. You are forgiven.
Less ppl/generals less competition within all acording to plan
Can confirm. Cities of Sigmar are beautifully detailed models but it’s definitely not for the faint hearted (or new to the hobby). Painting the Cavaliers at the moment and they are a lot of work. The only thing missing from the Spearhead box is some ranged and magic, the Cities are very much a combined arms force, the box would have been better with a Warforger, some Fusilers and a Marshal on Foot instead of the Cavalier Marshal and Cannon in my opinion.
Had the exact same sentiments when I got the box. I know it's due to change in 4th, but part of Steelhelms was letting you add Fusilers as battleline units. The Cavaliers are very pretty, but painting them was bordering on torturous at times.
The StD box have, basically, 2 chariots, need just to make a structure and bring one or two dudes
Use some string and a müller corner yoghurt pot and cover it in any spare spiky bits. Instant extra chariots.
The fact that the Kharadron one comes with a frigate is awesome. 40k could never. I also started right before the vanguard came out, so I managed to get the start collecting, and it's kind of a perfect progression. Start the gunhauler, then get the frigate in the vanguard, then wrap it up with an ironclad, and you're on the cusp of a full army. Moreso, if you're cheeky and nab the heroes on the ironclad and use them as foot heroes
Me looking at my fully assembled, unpainted cannon..... well, I guess I'm screwed lol
Great tier list video, really helped me put some of those boxes into perspective.
A note on the Sylvaneth box: the tree-revenants are *also* a multi-kit. They can be built as either tree-revenants or as spite-revenants. The only thing in the box that isn't a multi-kit is the branchwych.

Small correction: the SCE sword duders were NOT in "Dominion". However: the spear guys from "Dominion" are a perfectly fine replacement, the only visual difference other than the swords would be the lack of a horn blower.
So the basic gist remains the same: you can get it all very cheap on the 2nd hand market. Even the chariot should not be overly expensive, since it came in a very recent issue of the "Stormbringer" magazine.
Similarly for the Kruleboyz: you get it (almost) all in "Dominion" (convert a banner and horn blower), and get the big bow from "Stormbringer" or 'bay.
Yep, and shields vs not but I’m certainly using my Dominion models for this, even more suppprted by GWs articles and responses about other stormcast weapon and shield modeling not being relevant for the new warscrolls that don’t differentiate within a unit type
Great idea of tossing together a Spearhead and painting it for context. I 100% agree that you should gun for Hedonites of Slaanesh as the basis. I fully approve of that recommendation.
Love the videos and content you do. Keep up the great work!
I love the Idoneth Deepkin exclusively because the ocean life is fun to paint up.
Rob. I appreciate what you do for the community.
Gloomspites! Not even watched the video.. but we all know gobbos are the most fun! 🤣
I love the phrase about wanting to play awesome vampires but end up standing on objectives with zombies. Sums up my experience with SBGL
I love your analysis and the various points you used to rate every box. It gives a much deeper analysis than just aesthetics. I feel that you are really spot on. Excellent video, probably as unbiased as can be. As to your early prompt: What would I pick as a (veteran) player? I would go for Lumineth or Cities of Sigmar because of the reason you stated : they feel like an army on the tabletop. They play every phase, with a variety of models that feel like they are an actual army with varied specializations. Diversity is key in my opinion to appreciate an army on the long term so that you can swap your lists and try different things. I've picked up Rivendell for the Lord of the Rings and I'm quickly figuring out that most battles are played the same with my faction. I want artillery pieces, rank and file, wizards, bowmen, support heroes and mighty monsters, spear phalanxes, cavalry, etc.
Besides you have Humans, you have Dark Elves and Dwarves in the same faction, each filling a particular role, which gives "Last Alliance" ( If you are a LOTR fan ), or "Alliance" ( if you are a Warcraft fan ) vibes and would be just extremely fun to paint different schemes AND have it make sense...
Thank you for the video! Really helpful to sort out what is worth it. I feel like grabbing the dominion box would be great for new hobbyists. You pretty much get 2 spearheads and then just need to grab 2 more kits. That box is also sooooo cheap!
9:18 I'm not panting the trim on some warriors, and it looks fine in a dark bronze with a black-brown wash. It's there but just looks like raised detail as opposed to gilding.
Trim is a painting nightmare only if you let it be. 👍
Slap chop metal and contrast black över the flats urfaces
Hrm... my painting trepedition on Hedonites has increased even more lol - but I love the models *so much* - I'm just gonna have to do it, somehow!
Also really praying I can manage redoing the archers to serve as "Daemonettes" like I think I can. (Why is there not a melee version of Blissbarb archers GW?? There's gotta be a middleground between archers, seekers and Myrmidesh right?)
My favourite is ogors, such a good box. Older sculpts but still perfectly good
And a great buy for TOW - even multiple times. Converting the Tyrant into a BSB is easy, and everything else is useful at least twice. You actually get about 800 points (before magic items) for TOW out of this box, so getting it twice and adding a big monster of choice has you set for 2000 point games.
Leadbelchers are useless in tow.
I really hope that the format turns out good, it's what I'm the most excited about in the new edition. So much so that I'm printing a gloomspite gitz spearhead right now. I have no intention of turning it into a full army, just a fun little project to paint a bunch of little guys. It's a perfect way for existing players to dip their toes into another miniature line without the stress of having a bunch of unusable in game miniatures. I don't really even mind getting another spearhead in the future, hopefully it'll contain at least some of my existing models
Something to know about the slaanesh seekers. Holy hell its tricky to get the rider to sit ontop of the mount. Its fiddly as fudge! And sooooo many details. I love my slaanesh army but totaly agree about the hobby issue :D
Unhinged and particularly happy about it. Made me want to buy the box with that statement alone!
I'm building/painting the Soulblight Gravelords at the moment as a fairly new hobbyist! While the Vargheists are outdated and definately need a new sculpt. They do hold their own and are alot of fun to paint, same goes for the vampire lord. Not the most exiting lord, but alot of fun to paint! The skeletons are a bit of a bore to do though, and the knights are daunting xD But overall a strong A tier in my opinion! Love the list, definately going to pick up a couple more spearheads to play and build aswell!
This was a great video. I am looking at the Lumineth Realm-Lords, Stormcast and potentially the Daughters of Khaine as I like all three armies and would love to jump into one of them for 4th edition. Just how hard would you say the Lumineth are as a new hobbyist?
Soulblight is my nr 1. Vampires and skeletons forever. Just wish they would touch up some of the models and give us something like vampire footsoldiers and some bow/crossbow men.
Great video! Makes me look forward to Spearhead as a whole. 🙏
For me it’s the Soulblight Gravelords vanguard. In a word VAMPIRES. But if you need more, Kool Cavalry, skeleboys, and Vargheists. Painting is simple and looks AMAZING!
Also it is weird, that these skeletons (different from Ossiarch Bonereapers) brim with personality. And I love 'em....but for a hobbyist approach/Soulblight Gravelord start in fact I would rather buy the boardgame Warhammer Quest: Cursed City. 5 characters...only 10 skeletons...10 zombies, rats, bats, 2 big hulking guys and 3 agile ones. And 8 characters for the forces of Order.
I am kind of hoping there will be multiple spearheads per faction as typically there are multiple ways to play each faction. Great video as always
Literally my issue right now! What to do!! Aaarrgggh! 😂
Trolls are also reasonably easy to sculpts into double their number. Squig riders with their lances bent and painted to be sharpened candy canes can be Christmas themed as well (I give them to friends in transparent balls to put in trees).
I am getting my Kruel boyz ready for spearhead
I just finished all the kruleboyz last week.
*Krule
With regards to Silvaneth, I don't see the wildwoods as a negative or a tax. I think of it as a hobby plus, trees are fun to make and quite good as a first project involving sculpting. There are quite a few different techniques, twisted wire, dried cuttings or my favourite your left over sprues and a heatgun.
Yeah, if you like the hobby of terrain building (like me), Sylvaneth trees are a big plus! That said, it's not gonna be for everyone and I totally get people being turned off by the fact that you need them.
Let's be honest. If you play with friends or people you know, you can just get away with using anything from little toy trees to some shoddy drawing of a tree you put on the field xD
And if they don't... You would probably need to find some new friends who aren't that uptight
I feel like Idoneth are one of those armies that for those it clicks with it _really_ clicks with in terms of coolness.
To make a comparison to 40k for the 40k players out there, they are very similar in vibes and aesthetics to Drukhari but with more soul magic and sealife and less torture and abominations.
Rob you are truly doing the Lords work with your Sigmar/TOW videos. Thank you so much
This was so much fun to work on together! Grot Gang!
Great video as usual, Rob!
As someone who bought the Tzeentch Vanguard not quite a year ago, be careful buying that box, but not because of gameplay per se. A lot of people, according to Amazon reviews, were missing half the Tzaangors in the box (my GW employee was super-nice and let me fully inspect the insides of the box before purchasing, which I went on to do).
I may just get the 4th edition box at this point and go from there. I have Be'lakor already but don't know if I want to do a Chaos Army. Thanks for the food for thought in deciding my first AOS army.
Really good video, thank you.
Thinking of doing a tale of 4 warlords with AoS 4 due for release and a Spearhead is the first challenge, massive help thanks!!
Great content as always
can we only play the spearhead boxes as spearhead formation?
or can we adapt like in a mini aos army?
13:24 One of the main reasons I love these goofy guys so much. They think the movie they're in is 'Excaliber meets Lord of the Rings' but it is in fact 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail meets The Texas Chainsaw Massacre'... Good value Spearhead box that - looks initially pretty strong too and you also get a really good mix for WarCry into the bargain
On Stormcast, those are Vanquishers, not Vigilors or Vindictors. Vanquishers are a bit more in-demand due to being low points cost Battleline and their ability to counter chaff. I think you're thinking of the spear-toting Vindictors, which were in Dominion and are a great next purchase.
It's the Yndrasta Dominion sprue (Yndrasta, Vexillor, Annihilators) with the Vanquishers and the Chariot.
Thank you for pointing out sylvaneth need the terrain piece! I hadn’t known when starting my army and it killed me inside that it wanted me to buy multiple 60$ kits of trees to play the army
Im holding my opinions of the Sylvaneth until they're new Spearhead. Still cool I can play it sooner with the current offering, when Spearhead drops. I hope the spearhead comes with models I need more of. Would love a revanent themed spearhead with tree/spite revs, the bug riders, gossamid archers, alongside a Warsong Revanent, with Duranti as the leader. Other than that, spearhead will give me a great start to my StD army, alongside the upcoming Dawnbringer box. As well as the Seraphon who I dont plan on starting this edition other than their Spearhead and possibly their Warcry team.
Idoneth: "I think it's gonna end up as a C" -- I see what you did here (and pun indeed intended as well) :D
Also sorry to double message.
But as to ogre kingdoms. I am still wanting the old kit. Theyre one of my two armies from back in the day and the fact that theyre old means little. I would love to see them updated still but i was surprised but happy to see almost all the same models i loved back in the day
Always double check the tzeentch box. 1st wave of them only had half the zaangors
Great video just a little thing! 52:49 those are not vigiliors they are vanquishers also they don’t come in the dominion so in dominion you will just get annihilators and yndrasta
Really want to try out the FEC one just for that swanky new varghulf courtier
Nighthaunt hands down
My wife loves the Gloomspite Gitz one.
I got two of those Night Goblin boxes for The Old World 😂
Tier List!!! Lets go 😂😂😂 didnt expect Kruleboyz to be as high rated pretty suprised...
Wow…who would have thought that Gitz and FEC would be the only two in the S category. My two favourite armies 💪👍..cheers Rob 🥳
i really hope they add more in future, like beastclaw for ogres or chaos daemons for khorne for example.
There's a lot of value, given the number of models most of the Spearheads. I used to play Chaos Warriors in fantasy. But I am doing 30k and 40k, today.😊
As someone who is AOS curious, this was a very helpful video 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Great video! With the Stormcast and Kruleboyz ones…it probably sounds cynical but I can’t help wondering if GW will give them meh rules because they are so readily available in the aftermarket and GW wants us to buy minis.
I see tier list, I like.
52:10 It's Yndrasta, not Ynnastra, Vanquishers not Vigilors (they have bows) and you don't get the Vanquishers cheap on eBay. They weren't in the 3rd Edition Box and the Vigilors weren't either! And it was stated that the new Launch Box will contain 2 Spearheads, so it is to expect that SCs get a new Spearheadbox after release of 4.0 too.
Ca fait toujours plaisir d'entendre un petit bonjour 👌😜
I really wish that Gloomspite had an 'Oops All Troggoth' build option for SH
Dinosaurs is where it's at!
This video just remind me again how much better the AoS starter boxes are on average. Hardly any huge misses or weird combinations. Only the Fyreslayers and Sons of Behemat boxes are mid I'd say.
3 units and a boat to get in and out of if those battle tactics are still there. KO S tier.
I'm joining a combat patrol league soon, and quite frustrated that the unit selections and loadouts are the crappiest that they could dream up.
I definitely want to get a Spearhead for the new edition but will probably end up going for the new Stormcast when they are released. Hedonites are tempting though
Considering I collect Blades of Khorne,
I'm inclined towards them.
I enjoyed painting Lumineth more than just about any army.
Why's that? I was thinking about them being my first army in AoS
I'm in the Lumineth section and i would like to say that i am an elf hater and i love Lumineth.
The best elves are written by people who understand that elves suck. Make them perfect A holes that scorch the earth because of its imperfections and corruption and they tell you they're doing you a favor. They're terrible. I love them.
Currently with 40k I'm only playing Combat Patrol. Couple of fun games in an evening. Planning to repeat this pattern in Spearhead
Stabas hold up well. If they bring out a new kit then their price will go up 50%.
Should I pick fyreslayers or KO as my first AoS specific army? I'm torn
Fyreslayers
As an Ogor player with over 9k points of chonk I wish I could argue higher, but you totally called us rightly.
Idoneth: that one time GW looked at a privateer press army and said, we shouldn't just copy the aesthetic but actual units as well.
We all know that the KO box should be S+ tier and here is why:
1. The box has fantastic model diversity, the Admiral is the best hero sculpt in the range, the frigate is the easiest boat to build and the perfect all rounder, the arkanaut company ensure you get enough lads on the field, and the 3 endrinriggers are the coolest models in the box. 5/5
2. Gameplay wise this is a very DIVERSE spread of units, two melee units in the admiral and the riggers to encourage you to get stuck in. The 10 arkanaut are fantastic for holding objectives and the frigate gives the lads mobility and a seriously prodigious gunline in those skyhooks. 5/5
3. Painting wise, these models take really well to some metallic paints and washes, really easy for beginners. 5/5
All round top marks across the board, no reason why this shouldn't be everyone's top choice.
And yet it is not because if you go to any LGS it’s a universal opinion that KO is fucking awful to play against unfortunately
Ghosts I'd put up on A-tier being the easiest to paint out of all the ranges in AoS, bar none. A very sloppy wash and a dry brush is all that is needed. They were one of the two starting armies in AoS 2.0 and aimed at new players.
My top 3 Cities, Flesh Eaters, Kruleboyz
Any news on an Ogors refresh?
After playing Total War Warhammer I really prefer the weird hunched crocodile interpretation of kroxigors. The serpahon box has a nice model but standing next to the new Saurus they just don't look that interesting.
I think Sylvanthe one is the best choice for beginner
I really want to grab the KO and the Ogors before they change to something new. Maybe a second Nurgle also...
Soulblight Gravelords is the coolest
I didn’t see iron jaws
Is Ironjawz just not playable in Spearhead?
Spearhead: Bonesplitterz is right around the corner
I've got the vanguard fyreslayers, have had it for a while to be fair, so if you did want to get involved I'll hook you up 😊
Elf lovers unite! Also yeah i decided to start with lumineth when not in the hobby for over a decade. What a mistake. Ive grabbed some stormcast to get my hands used to painting again
I know how you feel, when I started AoS in 2021 I got quickly seduced by the Lumineth X-mas box... the result is in 2024 I got a lot of painted armies and my Lumineth are spread between primed, badly painted and a few more recent better ones :P Atm also havinga 40K moment (Sisters of Battle) but I'll eventually finish up my little army of Lumineth! :D
@@Morrodin182 lol same hat. Tau hold my heart in 40k but i have a very small sisters army!
OBR or Stormcast hopefully
So, this is basically confirming that the will be no BOC rules for Spearhead.
Boc?
@@jamparke Beasts of Chaos. They have a Vanguard box, but are leaving the line this next year and will receive minor rules support. I was curious if they would have Spearhead rules or not.
I would put the kulboys in the F tear list Ironjawz Rule!!!!
Gargants for sure
Are you a mind reader? Gargants are definitely the way to go!
Started off making my fav the lowest. 😭
I think saying that the Cities kits ‘must’ be sub-assembled to be painted for a new player is a bit misleading. The general rule that “if the brush can’t reach it, you can’t see it” remains true for these as much as anything else. From a metre away on the tabletop, fully assembling these and painting them normally is absolutely not an issue, they’ll look fine.
You are not wrong, in case of the cannon the subassembly is still needed in my opinion. That front shield is just SO cumbersome, restricting brush access to a good chunk of the model.
But then I think the shield is ugly and would leave it off anyway, so I am probably not the right person to ask.
