Trapping Groundhog with Bait : Best Groundhog Bait

- We don't normally trap groundhogs with bait.
But, sometimes we have no access to a hole entrance or clearly defined travel path.
In these instances, we will use baited traps.
We bait with fruit and vegetables. Our go-to fruit is cantaloupe.
As you'll see here, baited traps aren't the most efficient but can be effective.
Cover those traps and keep bait fresh.
Finally caught mines after 3 days. Had to seal off all alternative entry points, camouflage trap & made a trail of cantaloupe along with bananas to the trap. Thank you for the info. Successfully caught my first groundhog.

Got this info from a professional critter trapper. Fresh green bean trail leading to the trap, 1 inside trap entrance. Bait to hang from inside trap. Fresh cabbage half, smeared with bait paste smeared on cabbage. I bought the paste, not sure what's in it. Its sweet and my guess is sweet cherries crushed. If you want to buy the paste the Company is in East Granby CT. Grandhogs have poor eyesight so you need a large piece in back of trap so they see it easily.

Pb&j sandwich and/or peanut butter on an apple works too. I caught 3 on that. I have 1 left who won't take any bait, but I haven't tried green beans, lettuce or cabbage yet.
Edit~ Cantaloupe did not work for this last one I'm fighting. Nor did pb&j, apple, strawberries, cherries, blueberries, mulberries, or corn on the cob.

Same situation for me so I had to use a live trap this time and caught it in a day. I used sliced apple, baby carrots and banana. It liked the carrots and banana best. Cantaloupe would be a good choice also. I'm on a farm so the destructive varmint was not relocated. I always lay a piece of sheet metal or old paneling on the trip pan cause other critters often take the bait without stepping on the pan. Great video, thanks.

You've got a nice Poke Salat plant growing in your compost pile! Boil it three times changing the water each time, then drain and scramble in with eggs. Great Appalachian folk remedy and dish. Thins your blood after the winter.
Only pick and use poke weed that is about 16 inches and shorter, just the leaves.

1:47 Myth debunked, if groundhogs are hungry enough (just like anything else) they will eat tuna. I had two traps with tuna and the groundhogs under my storage building ate it. My only concern is them reproducing, the more groundhogs, the harder to rid them out of your property.
I wasn't aware peanut butter was a meat.
peanut butter isnt a vegetable though. groundhogs eat fresh plant matter not processed stuff
Very good setup but those are baby's bro. Show me a big one in your trap and then I am on your team. I can catch 10 of those little ones in a week using just about anything editable but the big ones are way too smart and picky to walk into a trap. The fruit line in the back, good stuff, just not catching mama and papa that way.

I literally need you in my life, but I live in Lowellville Ohio. We just bought a house and living along the perimeter of the house that actually caused the concrete steps to fall away from the house? Groundhogs. I can trap them myself but then what? I have no idea where to take them.

I used the Harbor Freight ones for years but got tired of chucks and coons sometimes able to push out of the flimsy trap door. I now only use Hav-A Hart and never had anything break out. I do push a steel rod along inside into the ground or put a weight on top to make sure they don't roll trap on side and possibly getting out. Trip pans are too small sometimes allowing bait to be taken without tripping so I often lay a small piece of panneling or sheet metal on top of trip pan.
How long did it take for your trap to catch the ground hog?
Less than 24 hours. In trap when back the next day.

Probably?? But maybe raw is best for a groundhog.
Honestly, we don't know. (Okra just isn't a veggie of widespread use here in Ohio)

I have been trying cantaloupe and something is eating all the pieces, but not setting off the trap. Possibly mice? Any suggestions as to how to improve my technique?

I had one escape the trap (no idea how). Are they difficult to recapture? I wonder if now he knows it's a trap, will he learn and refuse to enter going forward?
They learn pretty quick but if your offering is tasty enough. As Ryan says in the video, we rarely trap groundhogs with bait. If you put a double door trap, walk through style trap (Comstock) in its travel path : right on hole, fence crawl under, etc. you'll catch it wary or not.
@@Frontlineanimalremoval What amazing timing.... so I set a different trap right in front of hole (under the house, I will add...it moved from the shed). Less than 2 hours later, my daughter called: "Dad, you caught a groundhog and its trying to wreck the cage". I went over immediately, and because darkness was falling, we (hopefully) sealed that trap up for the night and will handle this in the morning. One of the rods to the door was bent, so it must have raised hell once the door dropped. Never having cleaned one, I hope I don't screw it up. Stay tuned! *edit* used same bait (canteloupe)

Well done.
This time of year, they often have a couple of entrances. Winter burrows generally only have one entrance which helps keep airflow down and heat up. Summer burrows can have multiple entrances. The longer the groundhogs have been established, the more likelihood of multiple entrance to the same burrow. It you can't find one within about a 20 foot radius, there probably isn't one.
What kind of fruits you use ?

Though they can be released, most are euthanized. They can only be reduced on private property with written permission: nobody wants them.
I put them down in a CO2 box. They go to sleep and never wake up. Totally painless.

That fall we got some and his wife, from the bayous, cooked them and loved it. when cleaning, do not screw the scent gland. Years later, when liberals screwed the economy under Obama, I had a lot of Hispanic neighbors. My son and I got a few, big ones living on clover in lawns, and cooked them and they all tried a little. shortly after, groundhogs went extinct in the area. They're a poverty food, but a tasty poverty food.
