my grandfather was there for the truce. Humorous, yet unfortunate, he passed out drunk in the English trench and was taken prisoner in the morning. He was treated well and was released at the end of the war. He shared the story for the rest of his life. I love you opa!
Honestly best thing that coulda happened to him since its probably the only reason he lived. A RIDICULOUS number of the originally deployed troops did NOT survive the remaining years of the war. Most of the WW1 survivors were made up of troops who weren't even deployed until the twilight of the fighting. Remember the men who made this truce still had four whole years of war left to see, so not many of them made it.
British soldiers only spent 7 days in the trenches then rotated back to rest areas, then to training, preparation for being back in the line and then another week in the line. When they were in the rear areas the army liked to keep them occupied so musical concerts, boxing matches and football matches with other units were regularly organised. Its part of why British units didnt have the morale problems seen in other armies. There would be a lot of deflated footballs hanging round ready for the next rest period in a British army unit.
There were lots of Footballs. They were used as motivation too keep going forward. Because we Brits are simple minded like that. "I have serious concerns about leaving this trench where the Germans will fire machine guns at me....Oh look a ball, tally ho!"
“Older men start wars, but younger men fight them.” - Albert Einstein These guys were just kids. It's just such a sweet reminder that we are all so much more alike than we even realize. Not only to other people in our world today, but to the people of the past too. I'm getting an MA in history and honestly, the greatest takeaway I've had throughout all my research and coursework in the last nine years is that people in the past are just like us. It's easy to forget that and focus on the differences, but things like this remind us

GermanSniper They did that aswell because of that lack of training, when the military started using human shaped targets, shooting to miss the enemy became less and less common
Egor Ananyev War is actually seriously sickening........... destructive and not much benefits and at best only able to barely recover. It is not even worth it.
It's never worth it. What I meant in my comment was that the intrinsic human kindness is in conflict with the artificial/political construct known as war. As Sting says "there's no such thing as a winnable war; it's a lie we don't believe anymore."
WWI was killing on an industrial scale. Friends were encouraged to join up together and be in the same regiment. That sometimes meant that a small town lost their entire population of young men as they got killed together in the same battle. The young women were left without any young men to marry. It was absolutely tragic and horrific all around.
Egor Ananyev I had a great great grandfather who had written and told stories and I have been told and read everything about him and he had written down how he went out to respond with seize fire and he got shot by his own fellow allies from the pit he was healed and recovered by German soldiers then walked over to the over side. The British soldiers shot the German soldier while returning to his cover it was a sad day for him and ended up sneaking out of the ditch and returning home in Britain because he had been shot
Well, now that the song has been released, I have to only say but one thing: "Today we are brothers, tonight we are friends. A moment of peace in a war that never ends."
As a civilian you can understand what is going on here, but as a veteran, it has so much extra meaning. Things that I can't explain, things that are hidden behind the eyes of broken men and the glimpse of hope that conquers fear against the odds. Merry Christmas to the men and women in combat overseas, may we broker a peace between all nations and creeds for the sake of our sons and daughters.
I made myself a tradition. Every Christmas Eve I come here to watch this video and I start crying everytime. I just love this story, a story about humanly love between enemies in inhuman times. Merry Christmas to you all!

Generals: *work hard to get their troop to be fighting forces for killing* Soldiers: *Sing outside of the fucking trenches* Generals: Am I a joke to you
There´s an old saying in Germany "Stell dir vor es ist Krieg und keiner geht hin" in English: "Imagine it´s War and nobody is going" This event could have ended the war, if all troops united and said "No", i mean what can the officials do if nobody follows the order to fire or to imprison your comrad.
They call that mutiny. It in the French lines in 1917, it was a major problem. When the Nivelle Offensive failed, the French were near a breaking point, due to loses and the nature of the war itself. With men being ordered to charge machine guns, unrest was inevitable. Only other French units stopping the mutinies and the Americans declaring war on Germany prevented disaster.
Of all the things I ever learned about WW1 in my youth, THIS is the event that has always stayed with me. Not the battles, or the politics, but of one brief time where we didn't see each other as monsters.
What’s sad is that this was not only the last Christmas for many of those men, but also one of the best. Being able to stand up straight, not be scared of getting shot, playing soccer, trading gifts and chocolate, good weather. For them it was probably one of if not the best Christmas they had, and also their last
I started crying right away and needed a break in between, and the "We're fighting for freedom." - "That can't be, we're fighting for freedom" just broke me. We know how many million innocent died, and the obliviousness to the situation is just gut-wrenching.
Definitely, and that's part of the heart-breaking - these soldiers had no power in it and so many people lost their lives, younger than I am by now...I am German (and so may you be, or maybe your forefathers?), but I shed tears equally for all sides. What a painful injustice, and how lucky we are nowadays...
"The War was supposed to be over by now..." They said that about the Civil War too. And I'm willing to bet that's been said about plenty of other wars as well.
Hardly anyone accounts for resistance and casualties. Supply lines are thought of but it's mainly focused on the advance. Casualties only come in to thought when the graveyards start getting full unfortunately. Sometimes it can be prodding to get a feel for the enemy as well. My main point is centralized planning= fuckery
It just wouldn't happen because Britian wanted to be the powerhouse of Europe so they must destroy Germany, Germany wants to stop that from happening, completely forgetting the Serbian war against Austria and France and Belgium wants their land back
Sadly, the leaders of the major countries involved (monarch OR elected) were hellbent on power and destroying rivals. King Albert I of Belgium is honestly the only leader in that war I truly respect. He was genuinely defending his country from an immoral invasion and actually fought on the front lines with his army like a true man (while his cousins and the French President were sitting in their palaces).
You can watch the film about this Christmas it’s called « Joyeux Noel » in French but I suppose that it’s « Merry Christmas » in English. This is a wonderful film which is really conform to what really happened. 😄 (Excuse my English I’ m French ) 😅
Tony Callme ww2 was I fight for the freedom of France Belgium the Netherlands Norway Austria checkslovakia the Jews China Korea most of the eastern peninsula Germany and Poland so yeah ww1 was dumb but ww2 was a just war
ww2 was definitely - "we're better than everyone so we should take their land and kick out the people or genocide them" vs "how about no we don't want to do that and stop pillaging everything"
WW1 started because everyone was building up their militaries, taking over other countries, and had so much pride (nationalism) in their own countries. Also, the assassination of Arch duke Franz Ferdinand. Also also, the countries made alliances with each other so it was like * *We declare war on you* _ *Well if you declare war on him, then you declare war on me* * * *Oh yeah? Well if you declare war on her, then you declare war on us too!* And it just kept going, like a domino affect, until the whole world was involved in the war.
I feel like a weirdo for almost crying when watching this. Just imagining your family back home on Christmas and suddenly hearing your enemy singing Christmas songs. Id actually cry if I was in that position.
No, it's not weird. I cried too because of how beautiful and heartwarming this was. Always comes back just to cry over how beautiful this event was. ❤️
No reason not to cry. This event might as well be the single greatest moment in human history. Amazing yet tragic. Remembered fondly by historians and anti-war propagandists.
The Christmas Truce is one of my favorite moments in all of history. I tear up every time I hear about it. It’s the kind of thing that seems like such a fantasy but... It gives us hope that through the blood and guts we can do it again.
It’s so sad to know that most of those soldiers who laid down there guns to bring humanity onto the battlefield and engage with each other for that Christmas never got to celebrate another one. Such a touching story and moment in war history.
Cythil I certainly know what you mean. I was in absolute disbelief the first time I heard this story and it brings me to tears every time it comes to light that such an unthinkable event is not only possible, but historically verified.
My great-grandfather head wrote in his autobiography( he was a German living in austrian-hungarian and shortly before the war he became a military band member) he was told by his commanding officer to go up onto the no man's land on Christmas and play Christmas music with the rest of his band for both sides of the trenches
Jacob Dominick i hope he lived through the entire war, my great great great Grand Father Who was was a soldier of the Austria-Hungary Sadly killed by a artillery shell in Serbia.
3rd he did live through the war and after it was over he decided to immigrate to America. A funny anecdote that his father said to him when he decided to leave for America" do you want to live like a animal drink water all your life."( keep in mind the America at the time was in a Prohibition)
I read that the Germans have better living conditions in their trenches because most are made of concrete and better equipped than the British forces. The British forces did not invest much on their trenches because they are expecting a short war.
The Christmas Truce is one of the most poignant events of the First World War: a time when men rose above the madness of the conflict and (for just a moment) saw each other as fellow humans. How did it happen? This BONUS episode of Extra History is brought to you by World of Tanks! We will conclude this holiday special with another episode next week, December 24.
Merry Christmas to you all! Thank you Extra Credits for bringing the spirit of peace on Earth once again. May God Almighty made an innocent child be an inspiration for humanity's fight for peace; this year and, hopefully, all the years to come.
God, I cried really hard seeing this episode. This show of humanity amisdt the war hellish landscapes, this spark of sanity among the madness that war is, makes me feel grateful, and really sad that it didn't last.
if anyone wants to see a real life acted version, theres a British advert by sainsburys called 1914, this event is massively popular in Britain and the advert is loved and is always heartwarming/saddening to watch
In WW1 everyone was a soldier fighting for their country, none were enemy. The government and generals were the filthy fools. Although Germany did do brutal stuff but orders are orders and war is war. Caused by cowards, but fought by men.
we humans have violence in our blood. its the humanity we fight for. to see stories of humanity surviving war, makes me want to play those games. it makes me want to experience what they did. video games are more appealing than actual war. this is at least why I find games like that appealing. I also agree that either way, its just a good story.
This event in history is absolutely bitter sweet, opposing sides come together for one single moment through peace and compassion, only to toss it aside to return to a petty war.
They may have reprimanded those people for not being cold and orderly soldiers but they exemplified something that exceeds one's duty or honor, one's humanity. That humans are better than mere savages.
“Hear carols from the trenches, we sing O holy night. Our guns laid to rest among snowflakes. A Christmas in the trenches, a Christmas on the front far from home!”
Lol man the generals lie to make them fight the war when Britain did. Not have to fight that had freedom but generals where like we fight for freedom soldiers ok? me you have freedom that makes no sense
This tale of Christmas truce never fails to bring tears to my eyes. Even though I'm an East Asian and Christmas isn't really my thing, this tale always has a soft spot in my heart. Truly, in the darkest hours does the light of humanity shines the brightest.
Imperios I'm in india, I don't think in China you can watch this. And yah, my name does bear resembles to Tenzing. In fact his wife Pema is also my mom's name.
I am a veteran who has spent many a holiday away from home, I can say we always got too much stuff from home. The letters from the kids in school or the cookies from little old ladies always made it feel a little bit easier to be away.
Such an odd thought that Indians had to die in a foreign country in a war that wasn't theirs, thousands of kilometers from home... And God, the thought of those men singing Stille Nacht to the British made me tear up.
Fräulein Bird they were soldiers who volunteered to fight for Britain many indian troops are highly decorated for their loyalty and charisma in the war, same with nepalese.
This just makes me tear up; all this senseless death & horror for nothing. Acts like these are the only things that give me a semblance of hope for humanity.
There is, but I'm not looking it up right now. Cross reference 'Hitler Military Career' with 'ww1 Christmas truce'. We know he was there, at the least.
Thomas Weber (2010) "Hitler's First War" quotes Hitler's fellow dispatch runner Heinrich Lugauer: "When everyone was talking about the Christmas 1914 fraternization with the Englishmen, Hitler revealed himself to be its bitter opponent. He said, 'Something like this should not even be up for discussion during wartime.'" The book notes following source reference: IFZ, MA-732, NSDAP/Hauptarchiv, report by Heinrich Lugauer, 5 February 1940.
Oh yeah, we was definitely in the trenches, I'm just wondering whether the story about him yelling at his soldiers for wanting to cease fire is actually true.
_If_ it's not true, it's a rather widespread and _consistent_ falsehood. I can't seem to find the original source that claims he was there, but I see nothing saying otherwise. The earliest reference to it I can find (and the one Wikipedia cites as its source) is a 2005 article in the New York Times, but whenever I visit the page nothing is displayed except the article title and the typical "related articles" listing; perhaps it's just the computer and browser I'm using, so I'll try again when I have more access. It _is_ true that Hitler was serving as a corporal the Bavarian army in 1914 and wasn't a totally cheerful or accepting person, so it's at least quite plausible. I couldn't find any references to this event (or at least his attitude toward it) in accounts of his military career--it's only mentioned in writing that focuses on the event itself. That seems to suggest it's either unverified or too minor of a point to include in literature that covers him. However, I'm not super well-read on Hitler biographies, and the few things I did scan though weren't all that detailed, so my search doesn't really prove anything one way or the other, at least when it comes to the Hitler-focused literature.
Del Kenon The point is that conscription is morally unjust. If you can't convince potential soldiers to fight for your cause, then there shouldn't be a war in the first place.
Imagine if the war ended here. This story was already impossible as a truce, but that still happened. If only those darn majors weren't so occupied with doing their job, the war would have been over by Christmas with the status quo restored.
I swear this is the most touching video i have watched aboout WWI, cryied out loud during the watch... humanity is so beautiful but also heartbreaking knowing the fact the war will never end and most of these men died in the war
Whenever I study history, I almost always walk away scarred about the future of humanity, saddened by the tragedy of war, or angry at how often we humans repeat our mistakes. This story, however, in one of those few moments where I walk away, tears in my eyes, with something seldom present in the study of history, as I see it; hope. Hope that humanity, at its heart, is good, and that this humanity can come out even in the deepest depths of our great mistakes.

As a civilian you can understand what is going on here, but as a veteran, it has so much extra meaning. Things that I can't explain, things that are hidden behind the eyes of broken men and the glimpse of hope that conquers fear against the odds.

"The War was supposed to be over by now..."
They said that about the Civil War too. And I'm willing to bet that's been said about plenty of other wars as well.
"The war was supposed to last only a few months" Basically sums up all wars

Hardly anyone accounts for resistance and casualties. Supply lines are thought of but it's mainly focused on the advance. Casualties only come in to thought when the graveyards start getting full unfortunately. Sometimes it can be prodding to get a feel for the enemy as well. My main point is centralized planning= fuckery
Imagine if it just ended right there. That would actually take this already wholesome event to a whole new level.
It just wouldn't happen because Britian wanted to be the powerhouse of Europe so they must destroy Germany, Germany wants to stop that from happening, completely forgetting the Serbian war against Austria and France and Belgium wants their land back
@@BasicNoobs Yeah but still.

WW1 started because everyone was building up their militaries, taking over other countries, and had so much pride (nationalism) in their own countries.

That british man who fired machinegun must be fun at party.
I read that the Germans have better living conditions in their trenches because most are made of concrete and better equipped than the British forces. The British forces did not invest much on their trenches because they are expecting a short war.
I read that as if Germans themselves were literally made out of concrete

They were adversaries, not enemies

Please tell me there's an actual source on that part.
Please.

he definitely was in the trenches back then. He suffered from a gas attack and was almost blinded.
