What you say is true of any language, I'm afraid. A dictionary can help if you use it well but it's not going to teach you anything. And to be frank I have lots of paper dictionaries which I preserve religiously but hardly ever use now - it's so easy to look up words in online dictionaries!

Здравствуйте и спасибо, Ольга. I've been using various translations for each preposition (for, to, etc.), and while I could grasp some concepts, I just couldn't figure out all the possibilities. Your video is perfect because you've limited the translation to "for", when they are used and examples. Now, I understand. ☺️

I have reached a level where I can understand some conversations. Russian grammar is making sense to me, finally. I just need to increase my vocabulary with more words as I frequently run into words that I have not heard before although I can still mostly figure out the meaning contextually. This is an excellent video for intermediate level Russian.

I've been trying to learn russian mainly through english resources. My native language is spanish, and i was having a hard time figuring out the difference between для and за. Well, if you speak spanish, think of для as para and за as por. Makes more sense now lol

Really excellent video. You are the first person to make this clear to me. However one question.K + dative example "we invited guests for dinner". Is it possible to also use для + gen "we invited guests for the purpose of dinner" also? It seems to fit this example too

Второй вопрос. Почему Вы не написали "...на десяти человек?" Человек - это одушевлённое существительное.
Здравствуйте! 1) так сказать можно, но более правильный вариант - на десять человек. 2) после предлога НА нужен винительный падеж, но это не прямое дополнение.

One of the things that has given me the most problems is prefixes on verbs. I understand what they all mean, but is it true that sometimes a verb with a prefix has the same exact meaning/usage as the verb without the prefix? For instance, махнуть and взмахнуть - to wave. Or, помахать and замахать - to wave. It's really frustrating seeing so many verbs with the same English translation. Is it true that with some verbs which have prefixes the traditional prefix meanings don't apply and the verb with the prefix can be used just like the verb without the prefix? Or does the prefix always change the meaning a little bit? Like how "за" can mean "to start to." So, замахать would mean to start to wave instead of just to wave. Or, could замахать be used just as "to wave"?
Yes, it is true that prefixes could change the meaning of a verb.

Thank you for the video, it is great! However, there are still some overlaps in usage between для и за which I don't fully understand. Example from your video: "Сделай это для меня" vs "Миша сделал контрольную за друга". These two sentences convey exactly the same message with the same verb, yet the prepositions are different. Could you elaborate this?
Сделай это для меня - this sentence conveys the idea: “do me a favor; do it for my sake”. Миша сделал контрольную за друга - It was the test of Misha’s friend, but Misha took his test because, probably, he asked Misha to do so. Hope it helps.

Was understanding but you say: Она едет в Россию на две недели. BUT Она была в России две недели. BOTH ARE FOR A PERIOD OF TIME so why is there no preposition in the second statement? Thanks
