No one has equaled Keith Emerson on keyboards or synthesizer till this day. No one even comes close. He was so talented. It's very sad the way his life ended. RIP Keith. RIP Greg Lake
Whether on acoustic, bass, or electric, his playing was always impeccable. In his prime, his voice sonorous at the medium and low end of the scale and angelic at the high end, and when he pushed it, his voice soared. In later years, Emerson once made a comment about Lake's voice, which he said that it was a terrible shame that he never took care of it (take precautions to protect it). He obviously thought his bandmate's voice was something very special too.
No matter what you think of the genre, the musical era, the looks, politics, hair, etc. There's something you can't deny. Talent and showmanship! It's always amazed me too, how 3 guys can create so much of a complete sound! Even bands like the Who only had 3 instruments with a vocalist. There was certainly nothing missing from their sound! Gotta love TH-cam for allowing us the ability to watch these old films. It probably sells a lot of "records" for these "forgotton" bands. Long Live Rock!
ELP - The consumate progressive rock band that blew audiences away during their performances. They were a 3-Piece, but they were'nt a typical one - in that their primary instrument was'nt a Guitar - but a keyboardist who introduced us to the Hammond organ coupled with the Leslie Speaker system and - of course the Moog synthesizer. And - Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, & Carl Palmer were exceptional songwriters & incredible performers. Especially considering their music;s difficulty level. Thanks ELP!
So many of their songs and pieces that they played frequently changed metering or time signatures, even as top musicians they always had to pay close attention to their bandmates playing, no coasting, it was amazing how tight they always were.
Their ability to transition time signatures is a gift. One would think that anybody who knows how to count should be able to transition time signatures without a break, but I've always seen moving from an even meter to odd and back to be an unnatural act. Sounds easy when your'e just listening; when you're playing it's a lot more difficult, especially if any one of your band members are off pace.
Absolutely incredible. Here it is over thirty years later, and this stuff still blows me away. The synth line that Emerson does at 4:15 is great - glad they showed his hands during that part!
Keith is without a doubt the greatest keyboardist ever,he's miles ahead of anyone else.Keith is like an octopus,he is total perfection, nobody can or will ever come close.
Man I've been watching clips of Greg Lake and his ballads. He could belt out a ballad or rock out. Cool! I've never seen them in concert. I wish I could go back and see them in their heyday.
There must be one helluva gig going on in heaven. RIP to all the brilliant musicians we have lost this year and to all the musicians that left us in years gone by.
So amazing to see these guys LIVE! Love the way Keith chews his gum, I guess to help him with his, er, concentration!!!!!!!!!! Palmer is just a genius!
Perhaps Mr. Lake's greatest contribution to ELP was his ability to slow down the band's ever-accelerating tempi (thanks to Sir Emerson's and Palmer's preference in live performance) back to somewhat original levels. Remarkable, really!
I had my elbows on the stage in the middle at Savannah, GA Civic Center when ELP was there in '73 or '74. I have some pics of the band and of Greg looking down at me. It was a spectacle and I'll always say it was the greatest show I ever saw. They played over 3 hours.
Burned out my battery on my Android a couple times listening to al sorts of ELP tracks.. They were my prime music target here in Vancouver, BC.. Including their last in a small venue with about 3,000 fans.. RIP Keith.. From Another Keith
lol halhallion-I was at that concert too. But the greatest ELP performance I ever saw was at PNC in '96 during their reunion tour. The best concert I've ever seen, hands down. Most bands were 4 or 5 members strong-ELP was just 3, and that was all they needed. Carl Palmer was a phenomenal drummer, Keith was brilliant, and Greg not only had the voice of an angel, but was 3 guitarists-bass, rhythm, lead.
Had this 8 track. None of my friends dug like I did. The tape player in my car ate the tape so I took it apart and glued a piece of tape to the rollers and hid my riding around pot inside. No one messed with it because they thought it was a Brain Salad Surgery tape. Surprisingly, no one ever asked me why I had 2 of them. The days of great music an $20 lids.
way,way ahead of there time.these r true musicians, carl palmer is still the greatest drummer of all-time,and emerson is the greatest of all-time,and greag lake is great as well.love these guys to death.
Hello Camera Eye, First of all I am a Rush fan. I am also an ELP fan. I think Peart is more of a rock drummer who has learned to expand his capabilities. Mr Palmer truthfully by the time he was recruited into ELP at the tender age of 19 years old was a drum prodigy. Carl had already mastered all styles of drums and percussion by that time. Jazz, Rock, Classical and so on. Buddy Rich was in awe of Carl. So here it is, Carl is more of a drummers drummer.
Every young person I've introduced ELP to is astounded by the musical complexity of the compositions. Between ELP and early YES, I have a treasury of great music . We'll never see the likes of this musicianship again.
In my freshmen year we played this in Marching band with Nights in white Satin and Trilogy [I'm a senior now, by the way.] The most EPIC show ever. Clements for the win!
Timeless music. Will survive that off their colleges. (I'm going to live as long as it takes to prove my point). I love the other (proggrock) bands and musicians, but always coming back to ELP. Can hear and appreciate it again and again. The skill, the genius, the feeling, the brillance, the endlesness that all great music has in it and gives to the audiance. (excuses for my english, I am Dutch)
Awesome keyboard solo at the end. The left hand part is difficult on its own without throwing in the rapidly moving line in the right hand before leaping down to the middle board on the tension chords.
While Emerson does play the bass on synth, and Lake plays a 6 string guitar up until the drum solo, after the solo, Lake has switched back to the bass guitar. Just like with Tarkus, Lake plays bass the whole way, except for Battlefield, where the roadie quickly hands him a 6 string and Emerson plays bass synth. After the delicate ending of Battlefield, Lake switches back to bass, again. One of their many fascinating stage routines, switching who plays bass while the song is in progress.
No, Palmer's rep has been established for over 35 years, he is TOP dog among drummers. the 9 minute unedited version of this live performance shows him doing this solo over three minutes longer than shown here, and he maintains the same intensity throughout. Few drummers could do that, let alone keep up with Keith Emerson!
I first learned about this song thanks to my band director! My marching band did a rendition of it. And at that point...I was born again and became a die hard band geek. This song will always have a special place in my heart.
i wish i was there to see that festival..so many great bands played there..it's the california jam festival from '73..unfortunately i was only 2 yrs old !
My husband was at both California Jams. He talks of them fondly whenever a group that was at one comes on the radio. Of course, he has also "forgotten" to tell me the Eagles were there, and Aerosmith at the second one... ;-)
This looks like VHS-Wish I had a DVD of this show-best live performance of this tune I have heard so far-heard just about all of em.Beats the hell outta the dismal sounding and looking DVD's of this band released years later.Awesome post!
Gutted to hear the shocking news last night about Keith Emerson. Especially sad now the reason has been revealed. My formative years would not have been the same without him. I used 2 have ELP on my English schoolbooks at the time this came out, NME & all that. Thanks for everything maestro!
That goes for me also, one of a kind performer, saw him do a solo show in Toronto 1979? many times with ELP . Thought of him as being a well grounded bloke very insightful about his career and his music.
When I was a musician around Hong Kong, a musician buddy I met was in possession of one of Greg Lake's red Fender Precision basses. I got to touch it .. just wow .. Believe me that was a moment for me
Aww Dude! This is the song my dad was telling me about a long time ago, then shortly after I heard this on the radio but couldn't remember the name! ^^ Thx for posting!
Keith Emerson is the best rock musician I've actually seen with my own eyes. He is better at keyboards than anyone else is at his/her respective instrument IMO.
Soon after I was married we saw ELP in Houston, Texas.......wife made me special corn bread to eat on the way and enjoy during the concert.....love my wife and ELP still. She drove home.
Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends we're so glad you could attend come inside! come inside! There behind a glass is a real blade of grass be careful as you pass, move along! move along! Come inside the show's about to start guaranteed to blow your head apart rest assured you'll get your money's worth the greatest show in heaven, hell or earth, you've got to see the show, it's a dynamo, you've go to see the the show, IT'S ROCK AND ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! @@maxg_32 different style but he's close
2 guys are on his level
Mike Ratledge of soft machine & Kerry minnear of gentle giant
Only Rachael Flowers is close.
I was a big YES fan and a buddy of mine dug ELP. It was Rick Wakeman vs Keith Emerson with me and him.
I wish Greg was more appreciated among mainstream rock. Dude was a hell of a guitarist and bassist and also had an incredible voice.
I agree 👍
Yep
I agree! Lake had an awesome voice!
Whether on acoustic, bass, or electric, his playing was always impeccable. Totally agree with cheese harn.😁
Keith was such a badass with one hand on the Hammond organ and another on the Moog synthesizer calmly playing a complex musical piece.
The bubble gum-chewing must be the coordination secret!!
Like a second nature, or even first...
It's almost like he's a pianist! WEIRD!

Long Live Rock!
80s Genesis and the Police were amazing at that as well. But ELP paved the way.
I've seen Carl Palmer do lengthy drum solos that made my jaw drop-a very underrated drummer indeed.
I've heard the best drummers alive both in Jazz and Rock.
In my studied opinion, Carl Palmer is, hands down, the best drummer in Rock history
@@toddfishkind2731Best prog rock drummer, that's for certain.
I think he's the only one of the trio still above ground.

What a group!! When they showed up in early 70’s they caused a rare mixture of admiration, fear and envy in other musicians and in most critics.
RIP Keith Emerson and Greg Lake, and thank you for all the beautiful music.
Temazoooo!!!!!!
Greg Lake, unforgettable voice.
God bless Greg and Keith... onward to the big show
what a great voice... RIP
The drum solo, I almost screamed! My whole family and the dog are sleeping. The whole performance was amazing!
I keep seeing my childhood die off this year. RIP man. You will be missed.

RIP Keith Emerson. One of the greatest. Turned on to ELP at college in 1979. Keith is the best argument on why bands need keyboardists.
Some of the most complex and intricate music you'll ever see played, and all of it pure genius- ELP stands out.
Keith is without a doubt the greatest keyboardist ever,he's miles ahead of anyone else.Keith is like an octopus,he is total perfection, nobody can or will ever come close.

I've fallen down the ELP rabbit hole this evening and it is GLORIOUS. Still holds up! RIP Keith and Greg.
I often find myself down there. Never gets old.
far, far before their time. The problem with "classic rock" radio these days is they overlook magnificent talents such as ELP. Thanks for posting!
They were always so nice to me . Always made sure I had every thing I needed. They were first class guys I really miss them .
Carl Palmer was an INCREDIBLE drummer.
RIP one of my biggest influences!! You taught me how to listen Keith!! 🙌🏻
Wow! I had a live album , this must be it, when I was 14, I’m 58. I love you tube for these music videos.
Saw them live at Wembley a hundred years ago . When that Karl palmers drum kit rotated it was awesome……….. never be repeated or beaten………
