    Nobody I've ever come across in this life can do this at this level. A few come close, but no-one touches the stars like Keith did. Bravo, Mr. Emerson, you are still the greatest. We'll keep things flying.

    Keith is KING ! They opened their shows with Hoedown when I saw them in 72 and 73 in Pittsburgh.They played the same set both years. It's hard to impress how great they were ,you did have to be there. In those days they did play most song a little fast like this performance of Hoedown. And of course a FREE contact high for everyone ! Keith made short work of the quart of Iron City on the Steinway during Take A Pebble !

      With Emerson's bottle of cognac always at the ready. 1:04 He admits to being an alcoholic at this time, having to have the bottle on stage with him. And still he was a genius. I saw them play live seven times.

    "Hoedown" (1972)
    A showstopper that was actually a show starter for two tours, "Hoedown" was the first ELP adaptation of composer Aaron Copland, as brassy a show-off (in his way) as the trio itself. Keith Emerson began work on the piece after returning from a classical festival in Romania, so East European elements find their way into his rollicking organ and Moog arrangement alongside American folk tunes like "Shortnin' Bread" and "Turkey in the Straw." Emerson stumbled onto the track's signature synth sound by chance: "We'd started working on that arrangement and then I hit, I don't know what, I switched a blue button and I put a patch cord in there, but anyway, 'whoooeee.'"

      +tommaso faoro He was to the organ as Hendrix was to the guitar. Fuck Bowie, fuck the Prince, Emerson was the most tragic loss of 2016. He could absolutely SMOKE them in a challenge of talent, creativity, and musicianship. He pioneered the Minimoog Model D changing every genre of music from then on, and was a master at his craft.... prog lives forever.

    • @tommasofaoro3278
      @tommasofaoro3278 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Max Aronow no death is more tragic than another. Prince and Emerson had two different roles in music history: Prince maybe wasn't the best singer and guitarist of pop/funk music, but he became an icon and his bond with the fandom was incredible, from 1978 til the last concert of the "a piano and a microphone" two weeks ago. Keith Emerson instead was a virtuoso, maybe the best keyboardist in progressive rock history, and it's because of him if keyboards and piano are used as they are in nowdays music, but at the same time he wasn't able to refresh his image in 30 years, and a lot of us probably didn't heard anything from him since the '90s. You see, there aint a most tragic loose, it all depends on our bonds with them

    In 1977 and 1978, our high school had a video class, and we used to haul cameras, mixers, mics and other equip to the HRC (Hancock Rec. Center) in Findlay, Ohio and videotape FHS Trojan hockey games, and then broadcast them on a tape-delayed basis on the local cable channel. I used "Hoedown" as the intro and exit song. I saw them in Boston back in the early 80s.
    Keith Emerson literally destroyed a Hammond B3.
    Thumped it on the stage and then picked it up and smashed it.
    A wild man for the ages he was.

    • @racer774
      @racer774 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Matthew Bradley I'm sure that concert was quite memorable. I saw the flying piano but not the complete destruction of any Hammond. Knives into the keys, yes. Rocking the organ back and forth while playing, yes. Jumping on top of the organ, yes. -- Emerson was known to destroy several Hammond L100 models and had those as well as a C3 on stage which he stated was virtually indestructible. To my knowledge, never a B3 and I've never seen literature or photos of him having owned any B3 models. C3s are much more durable because of their solid end construction as opposed to the B3s spindle type legs on the front side. He used L100s to destroy because they were quite inexpensive in comparison but he incorporated the wild theatrics to 'wow' the crowd. He got this idea of theatrics after seeing Jimi Hendrix destroy/burn his guitar on stage and seeing the audience's reactions.

      Probably my faulty memory.
      I had assumed it was a B3 as I'd read that was his instrument of choice.
      But he definitely made it totally non-functional, whatever model it was.

      Matthew Bradley - Understood. I have mistakenly identified a few things recently too. I guess it's one of those mid to upper year things, if ya know what I mean. (sigh)
      Good day, sir!

    • @orgue2999
      @orgue2999 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Racer I Think he kept the same L100 for all of their live and it was repaired after the show ! You can see his L100 in this video in 2008 ! You can see how the organ is in very bac shape !!!

    • @racer774
      @racer774 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Orgue29
      I read or saw an interview with Keith in years past where he talked about his technical roadie who was kept busy between gigs with repairing the L100s used for the aforementioned theatrics. You are referring to the later shows Keith has performed in. He isn't quite as rough on them as he was in the 70's and 80's. The bands often had little time between shows so Keith had backups to use while the non-functioning units could be repaired IF that was possible. Here is an interesting article from 2009 about his chief technician's experiences of being on the road with Emerson beginning in 1994 up to 2009 and he claims in that period, they had only used two L100s. That was indeed a WELL used L100 you saw in the Boston 2008 show.
      Have a good one!

    I had the pleasure of seeing ELP several times over the years, and they always put on a fantastic show. I will always love their music. Keith, may you be at peace.

    Timeless!! The Joy of brillance an genius. Best musician and compositions in (prog) rock. Can listen to it over and over and it is always chalanging and always as new. The future will prove me right. I cannot imagine a world without the music of ELP just as I can not imagine a world without van Beethoven, van Gogh, Tolkien and James Joyce.

      Some things modern humankind is best not knowing.
      Or a slightly more accurate answer: It was the early '70s. It's amazing some of the utterly weird outfits rock musicians were wearing at the time. Just look at some of the Yes clips.

    This is why Keith Emerson is still my favourite keyboard player and though I can't quite hold a candle to him, he still influenced my playing greatly. He is the bomb...
    Long live the legend of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer!
