  • This section of the Dinosaur National Monument is an awesome high desert wilderness, with lots of exciting things to do in a very small area.
    1) Ancient Petroglyphs Rock Art.
Produced by the Fremont Peoples who lived in this region between 1AD and 1,300 AD
Petroglyphs are defined as images pecked into permanent stone faces using a hammer-stone.
They were hunter gathers, lived in small family bands and farmed corn and squash.
    2) Desert Voices Loop Trail
This loop trail, elevation 5,100 feet, is around two miles long, with an elevation gain of 300 feet an is graded moderate.
The trail meanders through valleys, over twisted rocky outcrops and offers dramatic views of this wild, desolate, high desert landscape.
    3) Split Mountain
This is the most interesting geological feature in the monument.
How did a river split a mountain?
One theory is that the one billion year old Green River was running its present course before Split Mountain was formed.
The mountain was then slowly formed by a geological uplift of fold.
The uplift was slow enough for the Green River to cut into the rising fold without altering its course.
In other words, the Green River cut its canyon as the mountain rose around it!
