  • Sublime, the Sonora Desert is a wild, hot, dry, arid and for those not properly prepared, a dangerous wilderness.
It's solitude, beauty and splendour draw one onward onward, the serenity of the wilderness appealing to the hidden primeval part of our being.
The Sonora desert is one of the only places in on Earth where giants raise their many arms to the heavens.
Giants being, giant Saguaro Cactus, the oldest specimen on record being 300 feet high and having 52 arms!
The Tohono O'Odam Tribe who have survived in this inhospitable wilderness for thousands of years believe that the Saguaro cactus is not a plant but another form of humanity.
Saguaro Cacti are regarded as honoured members of the tribe.
A Tohono O'Odam legend tells of how the first Saguaro cactus was created..... all is revealed in the video.
The Organ- Pipe Cactus, from which the National Monument takes it's name, is a sight to behold. It only grows in the Sonora Desert reaching a height of 24 feet.
Ajo Mountains are named after the Ajo plant which grows in the mountains. Ajo is a Spanish word meaning garlic.
    Arch Canyon Trail
This is a short 2 mile out and back trail. From the trail head, the trail leads into Arch Canyon.
The final section is a steep, rugged climb, up 800 feet on an unkempt trail leading to the Arch.
With temperatures exceeding 110 degrees Fahrenheit and with no shade from the burning desert sun, we decided that attempting this climb could be very dangerous.
