Your house is older than the one I had bought but during war times, to save on materials such as metal, Orangeburg also known as tar paper was used to make pipes. Every time it rained, the pipe would fall into a peanut shape causing the water to back up in the shower, tub and toilets. I do hope you see this message. The plumbing world seemed to know about this stuff but not the consumers who fall in love with older houses. It ended up being a pricey repair...like over 6k.
Orangeburg pipe was used from WW2 through the early 70s. IIRC his home is from the 20s so its not likely there and wasn't used much in renovation work so hes very probably safe. That lime wash wall is so LOVELY. I wish we can try that too, but we’re in a rental. Really loving your organic interior style so much! All the texture and colors, the natural materials, the vintage finds, definitely such timeless classics that will never go out of style. Do you have a video that discusses your particular design style? Really wish to pick at your brain and apply it to my own home 😆
OMG yes to an interior design discussion video! Please! We wish to know your design process, the inspiration, or the mixture of trends (if any) that goes into home styling.
I second the motion 🎉 So that I can finally Google this exact style and use it myself! All the design channels I follow like MaCenna and Drew have the same styling and I wanna know what it’s called.
I wanna know this design style too! Does anyone have an idea what it’s called? Or at least what is this a mixture of? It’s very warm with lots of neutrals, stark blacks and antique metals, quite rustic and cottage with the textured materials, like a European provincial or some sort?
Good for everyone to know, inspections do not generally look at plumbing, they don't inspect in walls. It's always something like that in old homes. So happy you were able to go through the back side, great job setting your boundaries and putting your foot down, contractors and such can feel very pushy to do it the way they're most comfortable with. Awesome job!! And the lime wash looks amazing, I may have to try it in my craftsman home.
So, so relieved Drew that your leaks got resolved without tearing out your lovely tiles. My gosh, that stupid inspector…..so not fair. So pleased you can have peace about that. You are so,like me. Love the paint technique you did - that's just what the walls need in that room to give it character!! MaCenna was talking about doing something like that on the fireplace in her living room, and on the exhaust fan above the stove. I think that would look awesome in her house! I hope she sees what you did & then does it in her place!

When you first time you mentioned a leak, I wondered why they couldn’t go from the other side. It’s awesome that fantastic original tile won’t be torn up! The marble you found is unreal-I had no idea there was marble with those colors. The paint color is gorgeous, too. I was with the Douglas fir trim, but some of the grain does look like oak.
Yes, and also use long strokes like the man he shows at about 5:00. He's making a lot more work for himself by using such short strokes. And remove the switch plate covers!
I really enjoy your videos = you make this old lady smile. Every problem I have ever had with a house was due to water leaks: basement water incursion from 10 inches of rain in 2 days after Christmas one year and then the sewer backed up into the bathroom in the basement, had to demo the entire basement;, someone left one of the water pipes dripping during a severe freeze in a mobile home (stupid neighbor, I told her to leave the water dripping in sinks and tubs, not hallway). Water can cause so much damage. Anyway, the paint looks amazing and I am looking forward to more videos in the future. Thanks.
That wall is everything😲Im so jealous of those that live in California because some lucky person gets to have you to make over their home..congratulations Drew🎉🎊Overwhelming looking at so many beautiful marble. I'm surprised you pick one already! You definitely hit the original trim..it's STUNNING!!
I love how excited you are stripping the paint from the one window... and all I could think was, how many windows are in this house?!!? Keep that positive attitude going! Much love and respect from a do it yourselfer who is still changing her home - over and over and over. I get you! My husband has joked that we've probably lost square footage on our home because I've repainted so many times.
Ahh, the joys of owning a home! Within the first year and half of buying ours, we had the ceiling cave in, on our original 1940's bath due to previous unknown galvanized pipes . Definitely not what we ended up wanting to have to fix right away due to costs but it's also exciting to be able to redo something correctly and the way you want it from scratch, no matter how stressful and time consuming and EXPENSIVE! Every home has it quirks and upkeep. It's never ending!!
Oh the joys of home ownership! In old homes, you have to expect issues but the good thing is, once it's replaced, you're good to go for years....old homes were built with such quality which is hard to get with new homes unless you want to pay lots of money... I just love the old tile which usually gets replaced. So glad you're keeping it. The colors are odd but there are so many fabulous wallpapers out there that would make the tile look great! Good to see someone hanging on to the old "stuff"! I know your home will be a place of beauty when you're done!!
When I did renovations to my bathroom, I swapped the plumbing so in the invent of a leak/etc it's now accessible through the drywall in the room next to it. I have tile in my bathroom and tearing it up is also not an option for me lol. Hopefully, no more leaks after the pipes are fixed for you. But thanks for being so real about the home owner process.
If you didn’t run into plumbing and or electrical issues I would have been surprised! So happy for you they did a work- around to save the tile! I never would have guessed your hair was not naturally curly! You do such a great job styling it…so talented!👍🏻
I'm so happy for you Drew! Re-doing an entire house??!! How lucky the person will be! I love the counter-top place you went to, it would be so hard to decide, but I love what you picked out!! The wall color is PERFECT, and it looks so pretty against the dark ceiling. We have those cast iron pipes too...glad you got them fixed, and I hope it's not a lot! ❤

Yeah! Unbearable heat is awful in LA! Ugh. You have such talent and patience. I look forward to going from condo to House and doing the renovations. Especially since most LA homes are older and gorgeous on the outside but need help inside. 💕🏡 I appreciate your down to earth personality.
I laughed when I saw Drew painting with a tiny little choppy rolling technique after watching the example of the giant “W” technique! I guess it takes some practice. (I also wondered at not removing light switches and a couple other details!) He is so funny and real!
114 here where I live in northern Cali!! So excited watching you turn this house into your home. You’re doing so well, and I know in the end your home with be lovely.
The cloud technique is so beautiful! I used it in my living room: faint pink under white and bronze. Your wall is gorgeous! Thank goodness the cracked pipe was discovered and addressed when it was--it would have been awful if you put in tons of work and then everything would have gotten ruined! Also, if the pipe was fairly old, you might not have wanted to use the water for drinking or cooking due to particulate from the pipes in the water. So maybe it was a good thing in disguise?
Provincial is my absolute fav. It gives a translucent black uniformity while still allowing the grain and a little chocolate to come through here & there. I use a matte rub on poly top coat to seal. Looking beautiful! Love your work! Thank you for all the inspiration! 🤗
Sadly, what you see in one small area of your pipes is the general condition of ALL the pipes. You may want to re-pipe before you move in since water damage is the worst. We were faced with this issue in an older home so I share your dismay at the cost. I will just say, you got off cheaper than we did.
Drew I just can’t wait for each of your videos. Oh dear the cost of owning your own home but once all repairs are done and you move in you’ll forget all these troubles. I love what you’ve done with the painting of the wall. It looks fabulous. Your smile and enthusiasm is contagious and really brightens up my day. Thank you. 😊💕
7:12 - ya, very oak looking to me. From the longish rays and the period of the house, I'd say white oak is more likely. A cross section of the end grain would tell all but not worth pulling it off the wall to find out. I'd say white oak is your donor tree.
I have a feeling they are white oak too! I actually scraped a chunk off the side (thankfully) of one and it was pretty light! I actually like the current warmth and may want to make them a a bit darker!
@@lonefox yes, I’d go darker too. Try to choose a gel stain dark enough to get the color you want but cover in one coat so you still get some of the grain coming through upon closer inspection. I usually avoid penetrating stains on refinished surfaces because of uneven removal inherent in the stripping process. It’s going to turn out great. I can feel it!😎
I’m loving your renovating journey, bad surprises and all. And REALLY loving going shopping with you for the house. We have just dived into our long planned renovations. We have a big house and a lifetime of stuff - we have had to pack up everything so all of the flooring can be replaced. We have a large square footage of tile on our main floor and have tradespeople here for a week removing it - Jack hammers and industrial vacs for 8 hours a day. We have also demolished our laundry and 3rd bathroom/powder room ready for the tiles to be removed. The walls are tiled full height and we have solid brick walls so it’s faster and easier to pay someone to do that part. Our painter starts next week, inside and out, all closets are being refitted, new flooring, new lighting, new window coverings. Kitchen, laundry, bathroom 3 (main bathroom was done in 2019). Our master bath has to wait until next year as I’ve drained the budget - landscaping is on the list once the exterior painting is done. 5 years of planning and saving coming together, though covid did delay things for 2 years. I just want it done so I can unpack again and enjoy living here.
Hi Drew, I hope there are no more major issues with the house, so that you can spend your energy on doing things you enjoy doing. Good luck to all the entrants for the Lone Fox giveaway.
For your window trim, it still looks a little shiny so I would go over with a fine grit sandpaper first, wipe it down (tac cloth is great for getting of all the fine dust left behind even after you wiped with a damp cloth), then use a wood / pre stain conditioner before you put your stain on, that should avoid that streaky finish that you saw when you first stripped the paint off. To get the depth of colour you are looking for, thin layers is key, don't be tempted to try and do it in one go (it will go streaky and look painted on). Some people have had great results with gel stain for the darker looks but I've never used it so can't comment, but might be worth testing that as I believe it takes a lot less prep.
Dear Drew...I love you! I love your energy. I love your passion. I love your quirkiness. I love your intelligence. You bring like in somewhat dark times and, as someone who tries to make others smile all the time, I truly appreciate your genuineness. Thank goodness I get to watch your triumphs (not sure that is a word) and your re-do's. Keep making content. Sincerely, Javachickennurse
Thank you for sharing the plumbing issue!! It's a real life thing that happens when buying a home! It's a punch to the gut, but now you're so much more knowledgeable in that area! And it's a great reminder for those whom have not bought their first home yet, that there will ALWAYS be things that you did not anticipate! Again, thanks for the fun video! xxo
OMG that drain pipe! I have a friend who just bought an older house in a small town in Pennsylvania. Three floors, bathrooms on every floor. The old cast iron drain pipe from the 3rd floor bathroom was cracked like yours. They had to replace pretty much all of the drain pipes in the whole house. The homeowner is a young person who said "Look! I'm like one of only five millennial who owns a house!!" They are very excited, but expensive plumbing issues dampen the thrill, right? Thanks so much for showing us your hair! I've been curious about how you style it since I recently found your channel. It always looks so good (when you don't wear a hat LOL!) so it's interesting to see just how straight it is before you glam it up.
I don't think I would be able to buy a house and move to California in 7 days, but good luck to all the California residents! The wall color is beautiful!!! Wow, wow, wow!! I had to shut my mouth when you showed us your hair - I had no idea!! Sorry about the pipes, but so glad they have another way to repair! Definitely reach out to the inspector - they missed it, and they should shoulder some of the liability.
Love how the house is coming along very beautiful painting with the texture that you added to the wall I think you have to think of the plumbing expense as an investment to the house not an expense because this will pay out now and in the future in terms of the value and safety of the house you're doing an amazing job thank you for inspiring me
When inspecting a home the inspector can only write down what he sees. He can't open up the wall and check the pipes or electrical. Sad but true. When renovating some walls are removed or opened, a good contractor sees these things. The pipes were cast iron and most likely orginal to the home. This is a needed fix. Good it was caught. Glad you spoke up. 👊🏼

I've never felt so excited and hopeful, then crushed and saddened in such a short time span!
I don't live in California.😞
But I want to wish good luck to all those who do!☺
Wow! A Family Home Makeover! The thought of having a talent like Drew come and makeover my entire home is just mind-blowing!
Wow, wow, wow, wow, WOW! What a wonderful gift that will soon be for one lucky person!
GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!
I really don’t!! My design style is something I legit don’t even know how to explain 😂😂 However, I will try and conceptualize a video for this
I second the motion 🎉 So that I can finally Google this exact style and use it myself! All the design channels I follow like MaCenna and Drew have the same styling and I wanna know what it’s called.
@@lonefox Perhaps some mood boards for each room to talk to?
I wanna know this design style too! Does anyone have an idea what it’s called? Or at least what is this a mixture of? It’s very warm with lots of neutrals, stark blacks and antique metals, quite rustic and cottage with the textured materials, like a European provincial or some sort?
You’re adorable. I love when you get excited and your voice gets higher.
I like to have the basics in order before I can enjoy the creativity of making artistic changes……you are my fave decorator by far…..
Ditto!😁💓
@@Lola-mn9oz so glad you like my comments Lola…..
I seriously can't get over how beautiful the marble slabs and the glass doors are, thank god the one that fell didn't smash!!!! My heart was in my mouth in your last video. Your house is so beautiful, loving your content 😍
And congrats on the Makeover project!
I’m so excited for whoever gets that makeover so excited for this series I’d love for you to get your own tv show so cool!!
So glad the plumbing was caught before you moved in. It must be a relief to have it taken care of. I'm so excited about your contest! I live in Florida so I can't apply but I am definitely looking forward to viewing the process. I know you will do excellent work!
I’m LOVING the casual, more personal tone to your new videos. Thanks for sharing with us! We already knew we loved you. Now we can see why even more!
Love the paint technique you did - that's just what the walls need in that room to give it character!! MaCenna was talking about doing something like that on the fireplace in her living room, and on the exhaust fan above the stove. I think that would look awesome in her house! I hope she sees what you did & then does it in her place!
Ah youth. The energy and joy here is amazing. Thank you.
I remember when this channel first began. It is crazy how far it has come. I love to see it. Congrats on the collaboration with TH-cam. Can't wait to see the lone fox family makeover.
You deserve it, you deserve it, you deserve it, kudos to TH-cam for having the keen eye & spot-on judgement call for choosing 'you' to do a full-on home makeover!
Love being along for the ride as you create your dream home, so happy for you! Every single vid keeps us wanting more, ty for sharing.
Don't forget to exhale along the way, ok? It's all great & you're wonderful!
I love that you shared your hair routine with us. I totally thought you had wavy hair. You so deserve the TH-cam home makeover deal! Love the new color for the lime wash!
Drew, I'm so proud of you, you seem like such a lovely person and so authentic. Love the hair! Love your joy about life.
As Drew’s mom That’s such a special comment to read about his joy for life. I appreciate you noticing because it’s really how he is. ❤️
Love your optimistic attitude! There is no challenge that you cannot conquer! 👍🏻
Did I hear you right? Lone Fox and TH-cam are pairing up for a home makeover? Absolutely amazing!! Wishing I lived in Cali for the chance at this one. Whoever gets chosen will be the most luckiest person on this planet. Good luck everyone!
You're doing so great! Sending you tons of good vibes and love!
I joined your channel a couple of months ago, and I have started to looking forward to it. Because you make me happy. You are such a nice person. Humble and interesting and full of spirit. Cheers from Sweden.

Can't wait to see you renovate a Lone Fox family member's home!! 💙
Absolutely love the wall color now. Excited to see the doors go in.
Good Luck to whoever wins the makeover!! I'm so excited for you all.
Just purchased my first home in Washington. Your tips and style guides are extremely useful. I wish your home makeover giveaway accepted homes in Washington. Good luck to whoever submits.
That is really sweet of you giving your time to help a family
Sharing your hair secrets was so cool and entertaining. So good your leaking pipe was resolved. The painting technique was different and the result looks just right for the way you visualize the light falling from the tinted doors.
I’m get so excited to see the renovations to your home. I know it has been a long time coming for you, and you have worked hard to reach this stage in your life. I’m more excited for your videos then Disney+ or Netflix shows.
That wall colour paired with that window treatment!! Chef's kiss 😘😘
That is a big Reno that you have taken on. So proud of you and I am loving watching your day to day adventures.
I love watching these! Love how
your style has evolved. Can’t wait to see some of the rooms finished and your plan for that gorgeous courtyard. Honestly I’m kind of so shocked your hair isn’t naturally curly❤
Im really enjoying this series on how youre renovating your home. Love your enthusiasm in the face of challenges as they come up, gives me hope that when I come to do reno in my home, I can face it with as much positivity as you do 🙂
When you first time you mentioned a leak, I wondered why they couldn’t go from the other side. It’s awesome that fantastic original tile won’t be torn up! The marble you found is unreal-I had no idea there was marble with those colors. The paint color is gorgeous, too. I was with the Douglas fir trim, but some of the grain does look like oak.
I’m literally waiting till you realise your renovations videos before I start renovating myself haha 😅 best renovator on TH-cam hands down!
Yes but XO Meccena is amazing with her Texas cottage Reno. Completely two different styles but both awesome plus they are friends.
@@leeleescraps omg yes how could I forget!! I love their variation in styles as well! Plus her iconic window making as well 😝

So much came together in this video!! Lime wash and plumbing and the window frames! What a treat. Love following this real time.

@@allysafranek9389 ohhhhh im sorry...you're right..my bad..
You've come so far since I first started following you! Your confidence is only succeeded by your success! Congratulations, Drew. 💜💜💜
Just so you know, when using rollers like this, you want to make a W or diagonal shape to start so that you get more uniform coverage.
Yes, and also use long strokes like the man he shows at about 5:00. He's making a lot more work for himself by using such short strokes. And remove the switch plate covers!
Since I have been watching Lone Fox he has never used the technique you talked about. I really don't know why. It is easier.
The textured wall is beautiful! You're such a hard worker on top of all your great ideas🌞
I love your sense of humor Drew. Your so comfortable in front of the camera. You cracked me up doing your hair, you always make me laugh !
It's his house...he bought it !!

Drew, please wear safety glasses when you are stripping wood with chemicals.
Love the new house videos!!
So glad you got the plumbing issue taken care of! The new paint color is gorgeous 😍 I have loved following along as you create your beautiful dream home.
Yay, video time! So many beautiful marble slab choices, I wouldn’t be able to pick one🥰
Yeah! Unbearable heat is awful in LA! Ugh. You have such talent and patience. I look forward to going from condo to House and doing the renovations. Especially since most LA homes are older and gorgeous on the outside but need help inside. 💕🏡
I appreciate your down to earth personality.
when youre painting, do a "w" motion. it covers the wall faster!
Truth! And framing the edges FIRST and filling in with the roller.
Agreed you spread the paint better and you can stretch the paint further
Tried it. But it leaves a streak!
I laughed when I saw Drew painting with a tiny little choppy rolling technique after watching the example of the giant “W” technique! I guess it takes some practice. (I also wondered at not removing light switches and a couple other details!) He is so funny and real!
❤️💯💯❤️❤️
So glad there was a workaround so the tile can remain. This is all pretty exciting for you.
Just love these home videos. The marble was so fun to look at. The wall looked really pretty. So much work but I’m sure it’s worth it!!
Love that you are comfortable with showing how you “do” your hair! You are adorable.
Be careful of the salt lamps and nightlights as they get smaller, they catch on fire. I had one that did. - Love your videos.
I can feel it!😎
For a moment i thought lemon wood? "Citronnier"
Yay, you got a heavy duty step ladder!!! Sooo so happy to see you aren’t still using the little side table to stand on while you paint!!😃
Oh, bless you. That is such a pain. So glad they didn't have to destroy the bathroom tile.
I would have NEVER guessed you had straight hair.
can't wait for the home renovation for the fan. Loving how excited you get.

That’s so wonderful that you’re going to make over someone’s home!!! I hope that we can make a submission if we rent!! I’d love to have you make over my apartment

Love the wall. I, at first, cringed when you were applying the paint. I was so surprised to see the end result, it is fabulous!
Older homes are always expensive bummer but glad its done before you remodel!
I agree that it might be Douglas fir. I had fir millwork throughout my 1880s Victorian in Iowa. The color was so warm, and no one had ever painted it. I removed the varnish from it where it had checked over the years. It was outstanding. Your house is beyond gorgeous!
Oak, not fir.
The wall finish is STUNNING.
