This feels like the Platonic ideal of an @oldshovel video. Old things are given new life. Something is donated. Lives are made better. There is an underlying value of knowledge and care being used to create something more useful than could be acquired simply by throwing money at the problem.
This young racer is going to have a bike that is set up for his body, the hydraulic brakes and 1x drivetrain will help him learn to race, and hopefully he'll carry a sense of the community coming together to help that lasts into his adulthood.

That's awesome that a kid gets to try something new as far as a sport. I remember 30 years ago when I was a kid I always wanted the best and the flashiest in the newest. I can just imagine what it's like nowadays with kids whose parents spend $5,000 for a bike, and the other kids who have a beginner bike. Teenage years are so difficult. I hope this young man does extremely well on that bike. Good luck to him!

If I lived nearby , I'd volunteer with you on those builds and I'd bring my own lemon iced tea and tools .

You really are a special man Rob. Always helping people out in community with your skills and TH-cam platform. This must have meant a lot to that kid.

Your rebuild for this kid is Fantastic. I’m sure he will appreciate a bike that is the correct size for him.
Looked like at least a 10 speed and a very nice derailleur.
    Very special.

This is a great video. And I'm double excited because I have a Raleigh just like that which my 12yo daughter rides.

Nice, i think he'll love it. The only thing I would have changed is the pedals. I'd have given him some nice grippy and inexpensive fooker pedals which are basically Race Face Chester clones. Every young mountain biker needs to experience their first bloody shin from pinned platform pedals lol.

Getting good bikes in kids hands is where it is at. Pedal forward. Go OS!

Hi @oldshovel. Have you ever considered getting into voiceover / narration work on television? You have a cool, calm voice with a great cadence that would lend itself well to outdoor, nature type programs.

    • @oldshovel

I never considered it until I started getting comments like yours. You are kind, thank you. I would love to do voice over nature program stuff. 🙌😁

This is a good deed your doing for someone who wants to be involved in this great sport. Hope he enjoys this new season on the bike. It feels like sometimes this sport looses a part of caring. Either donating time, bikes or stopping to help a fellow rider that's got a maintenance problem on the trail. It's good to see something positive.

Having watched all your bike videos I've noticed you convert the vast majority of your mountain bikes to 1x drivetrains..
Will you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do a video on just that? Cover all the parts needed, where to source them, and how to overcome freehub and axle compatibility issues?
I'm in the process of doing just that and having a real hard time getting all the components to work together- hub depth, hub to hub interface, chain line, crank arm spacing, etc.
Keep up the great content, we'll still be watching either way😊
