    I have 5 bettas in a 30 gallon.
They need space. I've had no problems. Stop putting them in small tanks.

Was that a type of gourami in there with the sorority?

My humble suggestion is not to have any other fishes in the betta tank..

I have tried doing a sorority about 5 times. Each attempt has been a disaster. Very established tank and filter. I am an advanced aquarist. Kept fish since a child. They start dying after 2-3 weeks. No spots and no ripped fins. They just look lazy one day and dead 3 days later. I just can't figure it out. I have tried bettas from lfs and special order online as well. Same story every time. I can keep female bettas by themselves or with other tank mates, but no go on sorority. I love these fish and so wish I could make it happen. BTW, water specs are all perfect. My attempts were all in a 75 gallon tank as well. Two sponge filters and bare bottom. I tried weekly WCs as well as daily. At this time I have a beautiful girl with some black mollies in 10 gallons. Doing great. I also have a girl outside in a cement fountain with some mollies and guppies. Also, doing great. I have kept most types of freshwater and saltwater fish over the years. I have a big tank of discus at this time and they are doing wonderful. Any ideas you can throw at me would be welcome.

I appreciate your post. I put two females in a 20 gallon long tank that were the same size and everything was great for about a week and then one went relentlessly after the other and I had to take her out. I had read that two females together was a bad idea and thought of going and getting four more to try them with the one that had been picked on and was still in my tank. Your post made me realize that it's cruel to throw all of these females in together and hope for the best. I have the sweet girl in with the 15 ember tetras that have been in there all along and wonder what else I can put in my tank. The betta and the tetras are so tiny that it looks like my tank is empty!

Most tetras would be fine, also a school of corys would liven a tank up quite nicely.

In a 75 gallong with such small fish i would think that you are over doing the water changes. Not positive as to why your bettas die so quickly. I do know they need lots of plants, to hide in and lay about on. It also sections up a tank and breaks sight lines so no body can clame the whole tank.

@@MultiTankAddiction I tried the "lots of plants and ornaments" every time. Plenty of caves and hiding places. The thing is I saw no fighting or animosity at all. as a matter of fact, when a fish would get lazy and starting to die, about 3 others would usually huddle around it in support it seemed. I just never figured it out.

There are online a few videos showing Betta females mating with Marcopode males, and also of Betta males mating with Marcopode females. Did you notice any courtship between your dwarft Gourami and the Betta females?
