    That neck template and corresponding heck pocket template is a great idea.

      I can't take any credit for it (apart from for showing it)...it has made it much easier to make necks and pockets, and it also makes it very easy to ensure that the pocket is lined up straight with the bridge, because the pocket template is so long and you can line it up at the other end of the body.

    Get yourself a Beber Carvers Glove. I'm still a newbie woodworker but can tell you after buying the glove my self inflicted wounds from saws and chisels have massively declined. My hands are looking normal again and not like pieces of meat anymore ha

    • @jonathanoakey4745
      @jonathanoakey4745  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the tip, I will look into those! I am getting better about wearing gloves when I use my Shinto rasp, but previously I always ended up with shredded skin. And I still have traces of red on my fingers from forgetting to wear a glove when I stained the piece of maple inside the body, over a week ago!

    • @simonnotthepieman1581
      @simonnotthepieman1581 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jonathanoakey4745 That's funny, I don't wear the glove when using my shinto rasp. In fact, in a recent video of mine I use the rasp to remove material from a neck heel with my hand pretty much flat on the rasp. without thought. We must have differently shaped hands. It's chisels and saws that get me.

    It's an awesome work. I was planning to build my 2nd guitar with some rough cuts and pieces of other builds. In your expierence, filling negative spaces with epoxy resin would affect the tone or vibration//sustain? Keep your amazing work!! Cheers!

    • @jonathanoakey4745
      @jonathanoakey4745  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your comment! I can't really say because I haven't done any experiments to compare them. Honestly, I'm rather ignorant about tone...I figure that the pickup and amp (and the player) contribute by far the most to the tone, and the effect of the body materials is negligible (not zero, but not significant enough for me to care at my level of experience). Given that people like Ben Crowe don't shy away from using resin, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Do what makes you happy! :)

      You really want to achieve a very stiff neck/body connection and have a solid nut and bridge. If your 2 points of contact for the strings, that is your bridge saddles and nut/fret do not move relative to each other, the system that is your guitar won't suck energy out of the strings oscillation. That allows for good sustain. Ideas like "the sound of tone wood" or "beautiful resonance" in a solid body guitar are uneducated mumbo jumbo. Therefore, materials do not matter much tone wise, as long as the resulting system meets the above mentioned criteria.
      Now, there is the question of the dampening module: If you attach a guitar string to a steel or carbon I-beam, the system would be so stiff, that the sustain is maximized. Usually that doesn't sound too nice to the human ear though, subjectively spoken the sound does lack "warmth". So, some oscillation energy being absorbed by dampening (because the guitar isn't perfectly rigid) is actually desirable. But that should happen in a way that a specific spectrum of overtones is achieved, which sounds pleasing. And this isn't depending on the utilization of specific woods.
      So....go ahead and try combining your scraps and make sure to construct a rigid guitar out of them.

    The whole thing is stunning. Is it a headless? What hardware are you going for?

    • @jonathanoakey4745
      @jonathanoakey4745  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! It's headless, sort of, yes....you saw the Lace pickups in an earlier video and the rest will be revealed when I get them. They are on order and should arrive before the end of September....I hope!

      @@jonathanoakey4745 That was the only bit that's set a question mark in my thoughts. The build is beautiful, but now I'd really like to see the hardware plan!

    • @jonathanoakey4745
      @jonathanoakey4745  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@muffevans5667 There is a plan, don't worry! :D The hardware is all coordinated, not only with all of the hardware but also with the inlays so in my (admittedly at least slightly deranged) head it looks good. We will all see at more or less the same time whether that will come true! For the hardware....there are very limited sources for headless hardware, and I didn't go for either of the most obvious choices (Hipshot or cheap clones on Amazon/ebay).
