Great review, bravo! Now everything is clear about the 900 pro X. Your detailed review nails it by doing the comparison vs 990 pro and the 1990 pro. And I am really glad that you plan similar about the 700 pro X.
i just got this, in terms of detail and sound profile, i like them. they are fun to listen to for music and even games. the issue as mentioned in this vid is that they arent too comfortable. the clamping force is crazy! but maybe keeping them on some sort of stand or stack of books will fix it . i felt like it was close to philips fidelio x2hr in terms of profile. ofcourse these seems to me as more technical.
Did you ever get used to them? After the first hour I was disappointed in their comfort. Then I extended the headband a bit and they became the most comfortable headphone I've used. I legitimately almost fell asleep with them on the next two nights.
That has been my experience as well. I have owned the 700 Pro X since it came out and got the 900 some time ago and both were not the most comfortable out of the box simply due to clamping force, but in everything else, especially the pads and how my ears fit inside them, a perfect 9/10. Then the clamping softened and they became 10/10 the most comfortable. I have bigger ears and almost all round shaped pads will touch either the bottom or top of them, most likely both and it will become irritating very quickly. With some headphones, it takes maybe two hours. With others, such as the Beyerdynamic TYGR (probably my all time favourite sound wise) it takes 5 minutes. The Beyerdynamic DT x00 Pro X series became the first headphones in my whole life that I can say I can wear for hours on end. I've fallen asleep with the 700's on more than once, even with my old worn pads. It's always sad to me when I hear people saying they're uncomfortable, as they're truly fantastic around my own ears.
The point of this model is to be a smoothed out, slightly less analytical version of the 990 and 1990. It ticks the boxes that were missing from them in an affordable package. I was tickled pink to buy a used set of 1990s before the 900 Pro X came out and even at the heavy discount, the 900's are better overall, especially because they don't NEED an amp, which usually adds 50-100% to your initial cost. Even your 990s you mention in 250 ohm - you still need a dac/amp for them which more than doubles their total cost. Beyerdynamic does listen to feedback, which is why they have so many models offering similar things to appease so many picky people. Much like Sennheiser. HD 598, HD 650, HD 800. Nothing else needed for their entire lineup of consumer / audiophile headphones, unless they made a wired version of the Momentum to fill the closed back category.
@@tecno4u31 No, the 1990 is better, if you can justify spending more than double the cost on the headphones and then double that again to get a proper amp to drive them. The 900 Pro X is just the sweet spot because while it will sound better with an amp, it still sounds amazing directly from a PC if you have a quality motherboard.
You don't need any DAC if you plug in 250 ohm headphones (like the 990 pro) into a 2021 Macbook Pro or any Macbook Air from 2022 models, because they all have a jack output ( sound card) for high-impedance headphones. A youtuber have also tested this here on youtube and there is no significant problem.
I picked these up a few days ago. I am using them for gaming and game chat with some usage for high fidelity audio. They are surprisingly good. Not top tier, but much better than your average, overpriced gaming headset. For the price, I would recommend them for anyone seeking something more than what typical headphones offer. Even more so for gaming. I’m using them with a DAC/amp. 8/10.
@ I have the Novas as well. I think that if you want an amazing gamer headset, the Novas are the best money can buy. They are my favorite gaming set ever. But if you’re an audiophile with a decent DAC who wants something more, then a good pair of Beyerdynamic headphones will give you an experience that you won’t get with a headset. I just use an external mic for game chat.
Nice detailed review as always. I like the new look and detachable cable but thats where it ends for me im afraid. I don't like the new cheapo pads which no longer have the perforations underneath. These perforations actually improve soundstage and the fact that these new pads are also proprietary meaning you can no longer pad roll if you already own beyers other pads is an odd direction to take. Also ive said this before that they are using too much damping over the driver to achieve a target on a FR graph. They just sound muffled to me when compared directly with the 990 and 1990 which have a lot less damping.
i have all DTs and think the 900 is more 880, feeling kinda semi-open and personal. I was excepting an upgrade to the open 990 and am kinda disappointed. The cushion is also very thick and becomes very warm over time.
Wow, what a goldmine of details about various headphones in your review. Great job. I heard Sundara mentioned at around 16 minutes 20. I mostly want to use them for recording vocals, mixing and mastering but also to listen to good not too boring sound and gaming (my son) (meaning a good 3d capacity is needed). WOuld the HIFIman Sundara be good: Heard about them before? I don't want sibilance or too harsh higher tones nor treble, vocals, but enough clarity to evaluate the singing. When open, one tends to increase the volume and I don't want tinnitus for my son or me.
Yes, I think the Sundara are perfectly agreeable headphones. They do tend to rank well in regards to clarity, detail, and soundstage. But, they don't emphasize bass--and there's a notable sub-bass roll-off, which is typical for planar magnetic headphones. But, all things considered, it's a safe choice, though your experience might differ.
@@NoThemeReviews Thanks. My preferable set of headhones would include the possibility of setting the amount of bass. I think some Beyerdynamic studio had that. Are there any such headphones anymore?
@@Dyonysus777 Just a quick tip for you: Pick any capable headphone suited for mastering. Afterwards get either Sonarworks Reference 4 or SoundID by Sonarworks. They do a brilliant job at "flattening" the fr-cruve. Can definitely recommend it!
@@keremkesici4244 thanks, yes I have considered that, can opener and Morphit as an alternative to Sonarworks if my headphones are not supported by the latter. Then I heard of Realphones as an alternative to Canopener if having non planar magnet headphones. But perhaps just Sonarworks or Morphit will cut it? I have Superlux hd681
Super detailed review, but it's weird to me that some pro gamers say the dt900 pro X is incredible for gaming at the price point, with the HD560s as a close second.
I have both the 990 and 900. I didn't want to like the 900. But it ended up making me despise my 990. The 900 is more comfortable, has much fuller sound, better bass without drowning out other frequencies, and much much much better directional/imaging audio. I've seen so many people hype up the 990s imaging and precise audio. I've had a complete opposite experience. Absolute sht imaging imo. They're also more bass heavy than I think most people realize. I eq the bass down 3db and suddenly I can hear other things in games. But still very vague in terms of how close someone is in a game or whether they're above or below me. Extremely overrated for gaming if you're actually a good fps player and not some casual who wants a general direction of where things are. Music wise with their default eq they sound good for rock music mainly, but everything else they're just lackluster and annoying if the song is treble heavy. With eq dabbling they become quite good. But I honestly felt that the 900s sounded better plugged into my macbook pro without a dac or eq than the 990s sounded with a dac/preamp. Which is quite sad.
I agree with this review. I like my dt900pro x as an allrounder but when I want realism for classical music for example, I don't crave the 990 brightness but instead really love the 32 ohm dt880. I feel the dt880 32 may be my favorite headphone regardless of price except for its lack of volume handling versus the 900. The 32 ohm 880 sounds startlingly real for classical especially for the price.
Man, thank you for the review! Really detailed and much useful information. I've ordered the 900 pro x's for x-mas, do you think i will be disappoited or do you think i will be pleased as a new studio headphone user? Are the headphones clear and detailed enough? Are the headphones better than the dt 990 pros in your opinion? Sry for my stupid questions, i'm new to the headphone stuff. BTW really great video, you are the best reviewer I've ever watched.
I have no idea if you'll be disappointed. You can use any headphone and be happy or upset about it, irrespective of the brand or money involved. The 900 might make you happy, depending on what you were listening with before. As for whether it's better than the 990...that depends on what you prefer. Both headphones have a different sound signature. The 900 I think is easier to listen to.
@@jestemzaanawetprzeciw228 I still use them to this day! I have no complaints, mixed some stuff and they work absolutely fine. However I'm thinking about buying the HD600's to try something new. Cheers bro! Czy ty jesteś Polakiem?
Hey, great review as usual! You seem to mention a lot of similarities between the 900 Pro X and the Ollo S4X. Which do you think is better overall in terms of clarity/sound quality? Thanks in advance.
They’re both good for what they are. I was partial towards the OLLO, but the 900 X is much more comfy and cheaper…so, that’s the clincher for me. As for sound quality, they don’t sound identical but are fairly close in a general representation of neutral signature. Beyond that, you’d have to listen to both to figure out which you prefer.
You haven't addressed the issue of comfort very much. Does the Dt 900 proX fit tighter on the head than the Dt 990 pro, more or less comfortable ? On the question of the sound itself, your presentation and your observations are not only the best I have heard in a long time on Beyerdynamic models (and headphones in general) but also the most reliable. I'm going to look in your list of videos if you have already analyzed the AKG K702 (or 701) and the Meze 99 Classics (or Meze Neo). These models attract me a priori. I'm also hesitant at the moment about purchasing the DT 880 250 ohms from Beyerdynamic. The use I will make of my headphones is listening to interviews, radio discussions, etc. (therefore: the rendering of voices as less muffled as possible), but also listening to a very circumscribed musical repertoire: ancient and modern classical music, 19th century and much of the 20th century: pianistic works by Schumann, Liszt, Chopin, orchestral works and melodies by Mahler, Richard Strauss, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, etc., quartets by Alban Berg, Bartok, Ravel, quartets by Shostakovich, etc.) BUT ALSO many archive recordings jazz recordings from say 1920 to 1950.
I don’t like to say that any given headphone is best for one genre of music or another; that’s simply far too subjective. All I can offer is that the 900 is a fairly neutral sound signature, and while it does not excel in any technical aspects, it does a good job presenting a wide variety of genres.
It always amazes me when people describe how loud a sound is. You said "beyond reasonable levels" then later revealed you were on a liquid spark. That amp does not get loud enough for me. I'm a DJ and I frequently go to clubs and concerts which puts me on the louder end of the spectrum. That level that you described as unreasonable is my minimum. I used to have the spark and upgraded to the liquid platinum for that very reason. As a reviewer, have you surveyed listening levels or did you assume everyone's perception of your terminology?
There is no objective method for me to use. If you’re using an amp at home in a fairly quiet environment, the experience is different from DJ-ing in a club using that same amp. But that’s only half the problem. The passive noise isolation of your headphones plays a significant role in how much volume you adjust, not to mention the sensitivity of the drivers. Then there’s the separate issue of the track, and whether the levels were adjusted. So, no, there isn’t some survey I or anyone else can use. It’s a case by case situation. I assume people are able to figure for themselves what reasonable volume is for them. I never said my reasonable volume is everyone else’s. How would you describe volume?
Pyramid Drake why are you such a douche about it? Why would he use the fact that you're deaf as a metic of what normal people would hear? People suck man....
Well - the resistance has a lot to say when it comes to "loudness". Driving my 250ohm DT1990's of my oppo HA2-Se never gets uncomfortably loud, whereas my DT 700 pro X can get very very loud in comparison (48Ohm). And as a reviewer, he should probably remain around healthy decibel levels for how loud it should be. If you want to ruin your hearing as a DJ, go ahead - just don't be mad when you cant hear anything later in life - you'll only have yourself to blame :)
@@NoThemeReviews I was just curious but if I had to guess, maybe using a calibrated mic and turning up the headphones to highest possible volume before compression / crackle / blowing the damn things.
Beyer told you that you could use a balanced cable? Not without modifying the mini-XLR connector from 3 to 4 pole on the phones. (Which I'm pretty sure they haven't done as standard).

This is amazing review. Very neutral yet informative. I like sounds stage n ambient sound ( sound of the surrounding n in the air I guess 😂) and details, crisp n clean. I don’t mind a little sibling sometime, with the right moment it can add some drama n goosebumps to me 🤣. From the sounds demo I can find on TH-cam, I found the 900 pro x sounds too muddy for my liking. But that what I hear on sounds demo on TH-cam. I probably wrong. Don’t hate me dt900’pro x fan 🥹. However, I would like to ask weather dt1990 pro is a big step up for the dt990 pro ? I like the built and overall package of 1990 (is it a beauty) but I’m not sure if it will suit my preference. I couldn’t test them in physical store. I use it for classical music n remix pop, instrumental. Thank you very much and sorry for my English 😅
I wouldn’t say it’s a step up or down, the two are very different. The 900 is much more neutral, while the 1990 has upper mid/lower treble spikes. The 1990 might be a little clearer and more detailed, but it also exhibits audible bass distortion in sun-bass at loud amplification. So…it just depends on what you’re looking for. Both are good headphones with their own limitations.
@@NoThemeReviews Interesting. I will try my best to get more info on these headphones. In my country, the 1990 is triple the price of 990 pro and I can’t simply return them if I don’t like 🥲. Than you very much for your fast reply and the information. 🙏
My dog chewed thru my dt880s.. now looking to buy either 990s or the 900 pro x . Leaning towards 900 because of replaceable mini xlr. Which ones would you recommend?
Depends on your preference. The 990 is pretty harsh for some people. If you do not like treble and you want at least neutral or emphasized bass, the 990 is not going to be a particularly good headphone for you. The 900 would probably be a better option on that case.
On the aspect of sound stage and detail retrieval, how do these compare to the Zeus. In your Zeus review you said the Sundara was a bit more detailed and more open. So would you say that the Zeus and dt900 rank similarly in those regards.
Saw your review after I ordered myself a pair of 900 X’s and now having second thoughts about it. I’m not sure whether you’re still seeing comments of this video or if you’ll reach back. I ultimately boiled down my choice between 990 Pro and 900 X’s. Seeing your review, two points clearly stand out. The Subject of Clarity/Detail and Soundstage. 1.) Clarity/Detail - You mention, the 990 have an edge over the detail between the two. Is it legitimately a more detailed headphone over all bands or is it because of Over-Exposure of Highs, considering how there’s significant boost in the shimmering top end in 990’s and that’s where I reckon 900 X takes a backseat, Since it’s in comparison a darker headphone with subdued highs. If so, Can I hope for equal amounts of detail in 900 X’s through EQ? 2.) Soundstage - As you mention, 990’s have a wider soundstage than the X’s. If you were to rank on a scale as to how wide both headphones are, would you place 990’s significantly higher? Is there a major difference in terms of stereo field, soundstage? I’m hoping you’d take these questions. I’ve spent nearly twice as much and now it’s bugging me if I’ve made the right decision. Anyway, Cheers for the review. Much helpful, Precise and most importantly Honest.
A treble emphasis is one method of inducing an impression of greater detail. If the emphasis adds an "airiness" to the sound, then that also might give the impression of greater soundstage. So, to answer your questions: 1. The 990's greater detail is a combination of treble emphasis and bass de-emphasis, or roll-off. Some sounds can be brighter, sharper, or more obvious compared to the 900. Some details are simply not apparent on the 900, while just about perceivable on the 990. 2. I'd say that the 990's soundstage is noticeably wider. It's pretty easy to hear that difference in an A/B comparison. Arguably you may come somewhat closer to the 990's performance by EQ-ing the 900...but you'd have your work cut out for you. It's not just an issue of increasing treble. You'd have to make various adjustments throughout the range, and assuming you have a 20-band EQ, you might be able to get some place you're happy. But that'll all be trial and error. I suppose it's a matter of what you're expecting from your headphones. If you want details and clarity with reasonably wide soundstage, then the Austrian Audio headphones are a better alternative than any Beyer. But, if you want a more neutral rendition, then you'll have to accept some compromise in detail and clarity. Hope this helps.
@@NoThemeReviewsThanks for the reply. This has brought me some clarity, certainly. Austrian Audio don't seem to deliver where I'm from, I would've happily considered them if that weren't the case. I am really starting to wonder why beyer would place these at the 300 dollar mark. I suppose, I'm stuck with these. The detail and soundstage holds a lot of water to me. Do you think I should return these and get 990's? Would you do it?
@@NoThemeReviewsAll the muck aside, that's relieving to hear. I suppose, I must commit to what I've bought. I'll see what I can do with EQs, pairing it a decent dac/amp setup should make me forget I even proposed those questions, hopefully. Much thanks for your assistance and well defined review as well. Have a good one.
Which headset do you think is better for gaming between the dt 900 pro x and the Austrian audio hi-x65? Thank you for your videos! Edit: for first person shooters
Hi I'm looking for a headphone around £250 with great detail and the best sound stage can you point me the right direction... maybe these aren't for me
Unfortunately these New Earpads means No 3th Party earpads like from Dekoni still nothing who knows if Beyerdynamic will even allow them to make for these headphones earpads they haven't allowed Custom Cans to sell modded versions of 700 and 900 Pro X too Not even Only balanced plug they are very strict with these so if you want to have access to 3th party accessories go for the OG 770,880,990 or even for 1770 and 1990 plus the OG models still remain the Most Comfortable ones and if you buy a modded ones from Custom Cans you can have everything the new ones have
It's not merely because of an increase in treble. There's a lot that goes into it, including the tuning across the frequency range, earpads, damping, and of course the music. Merely increasing treble isn't going to make a headphone with average detail sound analytical--it'll just sound really, really harsh.
I dont know if you still answer comments but i have a hyperx cloud alpha s and i was wondering if anyone knows if the 900 will have as much bass or less
Yeah I answer questions. I once heard the Cloud Alpha at a demo, but it’s been a very long time and I don’t recall how it sounds. But, I think it has a bass emphasis, like most gaming headphones. So, the 900 will likely be less bassy than the Cloud Alpha S.
It'd be interesting to know your take on the differences between the HD 560S and the 'new' HD 400 PRO. Waiting patiently for you to get your hands on them.
I’ll save you the time waiting. Admittedly from sennheiser themselves they are the exact same headphone, just minor cosmetic differences and additional cable. Save yourself the money and just get the 560S instead of the 400 pro.
and since theres No 3th party earpads for 700 and 900 Pro X and Beyerdynamic Dosn't provide any other types of pads for them you lack the ability to change their sound with pads like you can on All other Beyerdynamic headphones Beyer is very good at this making the pads part of the sound signature which allows you to tune it they way you want to different pads unfortunately with these new headphones we don't have different pads from anyone

@@Dyonysus777 Not that I know of.

Super detailed review, but it's weird to me that some pro gamers say the dt900 pro X is incredible for gaming at the price point, with the HD560s as a close second.
Thats because sound is subjective and always depends on gear, age, clamping force, earpads etc.
I use dt880 600ohm for orchestra and hd600 for large scale symphony, they’re great for classical.
880 are brighter than 990 bro!
I totally agree! I love to listen film music and classical music on my DT 880 Edition as well.
Yet the DT 880 is an analytical headset, isn't it ?
Best review about the 900 X that I' ve watched.
So are you happy with these headphones after 2 years? I've ordered mine for xmas too 😊

Lol. I agree.
Brilliant review and comparison!
The 900 is a bit heavier and has slightly greater clamping force than the 990.
Thank you. And for the musical repertoire I'm talking about (see my previous message), will the 900 proX be suitable?@@NoThemeReviews
I don’t like to say that any given headphone is best for one genre of music or another; that’s simply far too subjective. All I can offer is that the 900 is a fairly neutral sound signature, and while it does not excel in any technical aspects, it does a good job presenting a wide variety of genres.
Conclusion so I'm keeping the 990...
Do you plan on doing a full 990 review? Are you aware of the measured changes in sound with pad break in with the 990?
All headphones have some change with earpad wear. It’s impossible to know exactly how much that affects the sound without identical units to compare.
The 900 Pro X get loud real quick with a dac
So between these, the Austrian Audio Hi-X65, and Sennheiser HD600, which one would be the most flat/neutral for reference and mixing headphones?
HD600

Yes
My dog chewed thru my dt880s.. now looking to buy either 990s or the 900 pro x . Leaning towards 900 because of replaceable mini xlr. Which ones would you recommend?
Depends on your preference. The 990 is pretty harsh for some people. If you do not like treble and you want at least neutral or emphasized bass, the 990 is not going to be a particularly good headphone for you. The 900 would probably be a better option on that case.
What headphone do you prefer at this price point for mixing and mastering?
I don’t mix and master.
Hello, I have doubts about the phone austrian audio hi-x65 vs beyerdynamic dt 900 pro x

You nailed it Sir
On the aspect of sound stage and detail retrieval, how do these compare to the Zeus. In your Zeus review you said the Sundara was a bit more detailed and more open. So would you say that the Zeus and dt900 rank similarly in those regards.
Yeah, I think they’re similar. But, the 990 is a bit clearer and has a bit more detail and placement. It’s not a huge difference, IMO
@@NoThemeReviews so dt 900 pro x and Zeus similar, while the Dt 990s, slightly more detailed? I see! Thanks alot for the help!
How would you compare this with HD560S?
So, to answer your questions:
@@redneck-2485 No, I wouldn’t personally choose the 990 over the 900
@@NoThemeReviewsAll the muck aside, that's relieving to hear. I suppose, I must commit to what I've bought. I'll see what I can do with EQs, pairing it a decent dac/amp setup should make me forget I even proposed those questions, hopefully.

Which headset has better imaging dt 900 or 1990? Does the 1990 have a bigger sound stage then the HD560s?
The 1990 has better imaging.
Hi I'm looking for a headphone around £250 with great detail and the best sound stage can you point me the right direction... maybe these aren't for me
Would be cool if they made drivers with different attributes(i.e. detail, sound stage, etc) that way they could be future proof
Unfortunately these New Earpads means No 3th Party earpads like from Dekoni still nothing who knows if Beyerdynamic will even allow them to make for these headphones earpads they haven't allowed Custom Cans to sell modded versions of 700 and 900 Pro X too Not even Only balanced plug they are very strict with these so if you want to have access to 3th party accessories go for the OG 770,880,990 or even for 1770 and 1990 plus the OG models still remain the Most Comfortable ones and if you buy a modded ones from Custom Cans you can have everything the new ones have
Is the amount of detail heard from a headphone simply due to the frequency response (louder treble)?
It's not merely because of an increase in treble. There's a lot that goes into it, including the tuning across the frequency range, earpads, damping, and of course the music. Merely increasing treble isn't going to make a headphone with average detail sound analytical--it'll just sound really, really harsh.
It's better in resolution, soundstage and instrument separation than Dt1990?
No
