I have this watch and love it. The design is to allow unrestricted movemnt of the wrist for 1st responders and also protect the crown. I love the dial, find it interesting and easy to read. Rarely do I disagree with you Jodi, but I do here.
The hands are too short considering the diameter of the dial. The 12 o'clock crown works only if it's quartz powered and your not resetting it often like an automatic. The face colors are great but it's too busy with that bezel imo.
I love mine; it’s peculiar, but in the best way. Super comfortable and legible, and very easy to wear. The GMT/UTC makes it great travel pal-like an eccentric but helpful friend.
I own this watch and it a great rough and tumble watch, wears much smaller than its size, accurate, and comfortable. Clearly not for everyone, but worth a look.
I like this one quite a bit. The articulated lugs are interesting and practical, the GMT feature is nice to have (even if it isn't executed perfectly on this example) , and for me, the crown placement is lovely. I work in an environment that is a bit of a paradox. For my job, having a watch is essential and having the countdown bezel is helpful, but it's also a job where watches get scratched, smashed, battered, and abused. Having the crown in a somewhat protected position would be a very useful feature. Thanks for the review Jody, I just might have to pick one of these up!
The auto version has a clean dial and is better as a true field watch. The watch wears very easily as it conforms to the wrist well. The bowl shape and top mount crown lets your wrist move without ever having the case get in your way. The strap is real rubber and has a nice stretch. The LUME is above average, the bezel is tight and has even a torque application to move. The bowl shape and flat case back keep it sitting level on the wrist. In pure German fashion, a field watch that is meant to actually work in the field. Function over form. I have traveled on quite a few adventures with this watch and have come to appreciate this function. The form has grown on me.
I quite like this, although ditching the winglets would help with wearability. While you're dipping into 46mm watches Jody I would love to see your take on the reissued Citizen Orca. Another weird diver design with solar and ISO certification.
Interesting watch. I like the tactical look very much, the utc function is great and the 12 o'clock crown doesn't hurt the wrist. Unique timepiece, surely not everyone's taste.
I like it. The bowl shape - much like a fitbit - helps it stay on top of a sleeve rather than vanishing from view. This seems to be what is often called a "squad watch" that finds favour with the police and fire and first aid services in Germany.
Not a watch that'll be on my wish-list, but it's nice to see companies like Laco producing something a little (?) left of field. I am, however, a fan of the GMT (sorry...UTC) hand having its 'arm' colour matched to the face. It helps the arrow head to really stand out, whilst making the watch more legible. It'd be nice to see this type of detail on more GMTs. Informative and entertaining video as always, Jody. Cheers.
This watch looks to me like it was designed as a 3-hander first, and then had the second time zone function added almost as an afterthought. I don't understand watches that have lume on the GMT/UTC hand, but not on the numerals. You might as well not lume the hand either, because it's useless without the numerals. Having said that, I really like this watch as a simple 3-hander. I think it's a fantastic sports watch. The articulated lugs enable you to wear it over a dive suit or over a base layer or other clothing, which I really like. The PVD makes the dial pop and therefore easier to read. And the watch being so large really makes sense when you wear it over clothing. I'm a big fan of the 12 o'clock crown from a functional perspective too. Many times when I'm out on a hike/climb or dive I find myself having a sleeve that ends at the watch case and a glove that ends at the other side of the watch case. Not having a crown at 3 works great with that, and you don't have to worry about crown guards digging into the wrist either. If you're mountain biking, for example, crown guards can be a nightmare. So I think this watch is a fantasic specialized sports watch, but I'd probably go for the automatic 3-hand configuration instead of this quartz. It's clearly not supposed to be worn in everyday life, it's complete overkill for that (unless you're maybe a firefighter or do some similar profession). P. S. I imgine this watch would be great to wear when skiing as well, in between layers of clothing. It'll be big enough to stick up and be readable at a glance. Great for many sports I think.
I’ve been wearing this watch for a few months now and it’s definitely a favourite. Love its looks, comfort and I find it very easy to read and use. Great value for money to for the quartz model. 8/10 from me
Totally agree with you Jody on the pros and cons of this watch. Quite a beautiful piece but too much hassle, too much 'going on' with it. Not wearable I think on a wrist smaller than yours.
Your channel must be in my top N favourites on TH-cam, where N is a rather small number. Enjoyable and edifying reviews, and always an interesting t-shirt.
I love a lot about this watch, especially the dial layout and legibility. Would make a great watch for military flying. However, my wrists are on the smaller size so it’s just too big for me. 😢
The Atacama is apparently popular among military, police, fire brigades and search & rescue crews in Germany. It's not actually quirky, it's German-engineered for specific uses & environments... the shape of the case back to conform to bending your hand, the hidden crown to protect it and also not cut into your hand, the "winglets" to protect the crown and wear the watch over top of heavy work clothes, etc. We Germans don't do quirky, but we do actually have a sense of humor 😬
Laco should just get a quartz gmt movement with a EOL indicator. My movado chronograph my mom got me years ago has one it’s pretty useful compared to ya just dying at any moment.
Have a similar looking Laco, it's not a GMT and ihas a Selita for automatic. Green minute hand. 42mm, it's not a bullhead and normal endliinks and different strap.
I really like the protected crown. Especially as the 12 position, no possibility of it digging into my wrist (I’m a lefty). I value the countdown bezel. Much more useful than a diver bezel.
Reminds me of the Sinn "Einsatzuhr" made for the German Rescue-Teams… … and by the way… I like the Laco! It would make a great everyday watch for people who work in harsh environments like me (truck driver) and don’t want a G-Shock.
It’s too big. If you look at the auto version at 11:13 , there is no hashmark alignment issue. Yeah the GMT paint thing looks cheap. So, no. But fun video.
I actually don’t mind anything design wise, they could have maybe made the overall size less than 46mm, but the rest is fine enough. I’m assuming the utc markings on the dial is just to make the dial the only unique component for the utc so that the case and its elements are universal. I wouldn’t have it myself though, if it were 42/43mm I would.
Looks like pretty standard operators watch, I like the relocation of the crown and the gmt. Shame its not tritium vial like the traser or luminox A budget Gshock (dw5600) is always a better operators watch.
I’ve been eyeballing these hard after getting served up several instagram ads for them. I know you mentioned you can change the strap but I’m curious if anyone has actually tried them on a different strap. Maybe an Erika’s style eleastic strap. I don’t think a nato would work. I don’t always love rubber and would be much more likely to get one if I can put an Erika’s or Watch Steward strap on it. After all, it’s still just a 22mm lug width opening.
I think its a good looking watch but honestly too big for most people out side of its active use case. If you're actually using your watch as a first responder or adventurous person the size makes sense.
Weird you say. I’ll see your Laco Atacama and raise you a Straton Cuffbuster. Although I actually like both. The Laco’s dimensions are insane though. Thanks as always!
I can't unsee the three digit markings on the bezel LoL. I know what they're going for but it looks like 515, 510, 415 , etc etc etc all the way down to 015. Just a small thing that would drive me bonkers
As you said yourself: a watch named after one of the dryest places on earth can't be a diver. Then why do we need so much lume? I agree that the lume paint isn't the best and there could be more, but in the atacama desert there's probably a lot of moon light. I like the look very much, but i can't decide whether i prefer this over the Sinn 857 UTC or vice versa.
Always nice to see a count-DOWN bezel. Especially one that is not a Sinn or Damasko. (Nothing against those brands, just nice to see it from others). And a GMT with a timing bezel provides two different functions quite nicely, and a bit more neatly than a chronograph would. The winglets are quite strange; if your arm is quite big, the winglets just sit there and you just...wear the strap in a tighter hole than normal? And if your arm is small, they fall down around your arm but more rigidly than if you just had a soft strap. As for "protecting the crown," well, again, if your arm is big the crown doesn't stick out over it, and if your arm is small and the winglets fall downwards on each side the crown is exposed anyway like it would be if your strap started there. Does this just let you have a shorter strap by having some of the strap built-in to the watch?
even if the video is sponsored Jody is still honest and tells what he truly thinks which deserves respect! That's how TH-camrs should value their community, liked a video! Thank you Jody!
Heh, my tastes are pretty conventional and I usually don't like very "different" watches... but there's something about this one! I don't like the bowl shape but, since the watch is rather thin it's not too bad. Thanks Jody!
Can you do the dive test to the Heimdallr (sharkey) no time to die homage? the Sea Ghost, 200M? I just got this watch and I'm absolutely curious if this watch can be a professional dive watch at that price point of 200 dlls, this could be a golden discovery here.
$869.04 AUD? No thanks, especially when the movement costs around $50 on the evil bay. If I were to spend that much on a quartz watch I'd buy a Casio Oceanus.
Had an Aachen / B Dial some years ago. Lume was equally dismal on that too, which kinda ruined the whole Flieger thing for me - although I seem to remember your review of the B Dial having better lume. Nonetheless, I like the brand, and some of their stuff is pretty cool.
if they just put some normal lugs on this and maybe got it down to 42mm it would be a winner. A better quartz movement would be nice too but this one isn't too shabby
Good catch, when you look at those 70's designs it looks like it was quite incestuous as several firms pushing out the same look watches. There is a Royce that has a Squale design or vise versa. Same firm making for different markets but with another brand name?
@jabezhane you want to go down a crazy watch rabbit hole.... Royce didn't even make them, they were also sold as Le Jour, Ultra, and Jsoma. All essentially this exact same design with the weird endlinks and all, 4 different companies sold them, no idea who actually made them. Maybe Laco purchased this design from a defunct company lost to the quartz crisis? Maybe Laco were the original manufacturer of the watch and then sold them to be rebranded overseas? Not a flippin clue.
love your channel jody but to be honest , any laco is better than halve the shite you normally review , but your right , different strokes for different folks i guess
Does anyone know if they warn people before discontinuing a watch? I’ve been saving for a Frankfurt Gray for awhile now and don’t want them to discontinue it!
i filled my black collection spot with an Alpina Quartz Flieger from Jomoshop, though its almost always third or fourth choice and rarely worn.. This Laco is interesting but the lume is unacceptable. I've said this before but if a manufacturer is determined to cut the lume cost just do the hour/minute and pip or 12 marker properly.
Laco is a solid brand. Owned one of their chronos for a couple of years. Solid watch. Casework is top notch. Love the Atacama (I own a Citizen Tsuno so I like weird) weirdness however over $1k for a quartz is a no go for me.
As much printing as today's paper but it all seems to answer to a sensible logic. I can see getting used to all of it. The countdown ring actually makes more sense to me in terms of landlubber use. There's your accurate tracking for timing parking meters and showing up on time. The crown at 12 struck me as being perfectly sensible with it being inset into the lugs. Too expensive but I'd give it a B-plus for originality.
Stop saying weird, Jodi! Unusual, full of character, or any like-minded description - in other words, in a world with a profusion of standard black and blue dials, this stands out, and would grace the collection of any self-respecting collector. There. One sentence, not 13 minutes of waffle! Sorry, great video, as usual Jodi!
I have this watch and love it. The design is to allow unrestricted movemnt of the wrist for 1st responders and also protect the crown. I love the dial, find it interesting and easy to read. Rarely do I disagree with you Jodi, but I do here.
Point take Mitch, but there are other ways of doing all that. Glad you enjoy yours though mate! Cheers!
The hands are too short considering the diameter of the dial. The 12 o'clock crown works only if it's quartz powered and your not resetting it often like an automatic. The face colors are great but it's too busy with that bezel imo.
Nah, you're wrong. The crown at 12 is just daft - they could have put it at 4 o'clock or 4.30 if they didn't want it at 3.
@@tancreddehauteville764 Have you worn it? It’s actually brilliant.
I love mine; it’s peculiar, but in the best way. Super comfortable and legible, and very easy to wear. The GMT/UTC makes it great travel pal-like an eccentric but helpful friend.
I'd happily rock this on my wrist.
Is it oddly shaped? Yes. Is it wacky? Oh hell yes. But that just makes it appeal to me even more.
When I first encountered this watch I wondered why more aren't made like it.
I own this watch and it a great rough and tumble watch, wears much smaller than its size, accurate, and comfortable. Clearly not for everyone, but worth a look.

I think this increased my respect for Laco - I felt like they were just resting on their laurels with the fliegers
The auto version has a clean dial and is better as a true field watch. The watch wears very easily as it conforms to the wrist well. Got to say, I really like it! Unusual for sure, but in a good way IMO
What a lovely colour salad!
I have one of the original squad diver automatic watches, and I love it. Laco's more recent offerings aren't as nicely made.
I like it. The bowl shape - much like a fitbit - helps it stay on top of a sleeve rather than vanishing from view.
This seems to be what is often called a "squad watch" that finds favour with the police and fire and first aid services in Germany.

I agree. I like the colors, but too many shortcomings for me. I'd probably go with Damasko over Laco.
I’ve been wearing this watch for a few months now and it’s definitely a favourite. Love its looks, comfort and I find it very easy to read and use. Great value for money to for the quartz model. 8/10 from me
You can pour some soup in it if you remove the crystal.
I've had the automatic Laco Atacama on my list for a couple years now. Just love the look of it. German made as well! Great review Jody, as always.
Lume should be much better, I agree!
The misaligned issue is much worse tho, i wouldn’t keep it with that issue.
Totally agree with you Jody on the pros and cons of this watch. Quite a beautiful piece but too much hassle, too much 'going on' with it. Not wearable I think on a wrist smaller than yours.
the winglets remind me a bit of the GA900 gshock range

Laco should just get a quartz gmt movement with a EOL indicator. My movado chronograph my mom got me years ago has one it’s pretty useful compared to ya just dying at any moment.

Yeah the GMT paint thing looks cheap.

Meh to the watch. And for the money. Meh x 2. Great vid. Merci!
Similar lugs on some ZRC dive watches 😊🌊

Lots of eyeball and some gizmo with the lugs. Very cool. Awesome work watch. Price point is good. Thanks for the show.

I love a pie pan dial but this looks like a pie pan case and bezel.
Looks like pretty standard operators watch, I like the relocation of the crown and the gmt. Shame its not tritium vial like the traser or luminox

That 6 in the datewindow is a perfect coincidence.

There's your accurate tracking for timing parking meters and showing up on time. The crown at 12 struck me as being perfectly sensible with it being inset into the lugs. Too expensive but I'd give it a B-plus for originality.
was gonna say the same..hidden"tuna"lugs is the answer
Stop saying weird, Jodi! Unusual, full of character, or any like-minded description - in other words, in a world with a profusion of standard black and blue dials, this stands out, and would grace the collection of any self-respecting collector. There. One sentence, not 13 minutes of waffle! Sorry, great video, as usual Jodi!
Ordered mine back early November and still waiting.
