At first, my reaction was "This sounds like Hunter." And then I saw the glazed aviators and visor rising like a shark from Spielberg's nightmare. And then the hollow words crawled out: "My God, it's the ghost of fear and loathing."
I have an autographed copy of The Rum Diary signed by Thompson himself right in front of me now. This animation is one psychedelic massacre of an animation. Excellent, if not stellar work, GoodBooks, and I'm seriously considering making a donation.
Ever since this was posted in March I think (?) I keep coming back every few weeks or so to watch this video. It usually happens to be late at night when I am not able to sleep or have an exam in the morning. I just simply love it.
Yes! Because I remember when Thompson was about more than his craft. He always wanted to stop his never-ending pursuit for truth through words and he always wanted to be a spokesperson for a company. He was always about capitalism and free enterprise! Thank you for making us realize that stylization is more important than the ideals of one man! Don't forget that we only know Fear and Loathing. We never really cared for his other bullshit.
"Kafka's psychotic ramblings and disdain for punctuation left me feeling disoriented and uneasy, like a tethered goat." Mmmm . . . hurt by competition much?
Hi there, Hey distillingthyme A reasonable critique. But Good Books is all about tapping into the capitalist value chain for communities in need. No one here is paid - all time/effort/ is donated. We kind of hope Hunter would have approved....the piece is a homage to him and his attitude.
Amazing jaw dropping Animation . I am very curious about the making process of this project. Can anyone help me out which process ,style, software was used to create this
If one is going to buy a flucking good book, buy it from flucking Good Books... simply because they give a fluck. Besides, this is the 2nd best 'book trailer' I've seen in the 3 years I've been curating trailers for ReaderTV.com .
how are these videos done? is there a resonable alternative to aftereffects? if anyone know tutorials, downloadsites etc. please IM to me! i would appreciate it MUCH :)
Hi there Thank you for trying. I had a go and it seems okay. Is it working for you now? We want all the help we can get and we definitely want to sort out any errors.....
Where coudl I find a transcrip for the text... I'm not a native english speaker and even thouh it was beutiful animated I was not able to get all the words and to understand the message.... Thanks in advance! and great work with Use Good Books!!!!
He would have loved this for several reason's. First its fucking awesome and extremely well produced regardless of the recycled thompson-ish rhetoric. Second it's promoting a total non-profit that in no way actually uses his likeness to any direct benefit to anyone one group. If he was okay with the Uncle Duke bullshit (which ultimately he was) then why would he have a a problem with a highly stylized, diesel fueled cartoon that with hislikeness as a complete and total badass (which it does)
***** *like a co-ed's jean. *Espen Hovel *social conscience *Mandarins of poverty And I think the last line is "Help me, France" because this coincided with the release of goodbooks in France (I think). But it could very well be "Franz" from "Franz Kafka", obviously.
Here are some subtitles from what I think he might be saying. Jesus, I thought. The shitting leeches patrol the net like starved komodo dragons stalking the high watermark. I decided it was a mistake making tea with the bong water. I couldn't imagine using the turbid sludge from the cabin's tap, and my nerves were frayed like a co-ed's jean. I wanted a copy, needed a copy, of Kafka's metamorphosis. Not to read; Kafka's psychotic ramblings and disdain for punctuation left me feeling disoriented and uneasy, like a tethered goat. No, this bloated novella measured a precise 8.5 millimeters thick, and would counteract the uneven floor of the Espen hovel I currently shared with my ex-wife's dobermans. I needed it in paperback. I needed it delivered. I couldn't bring myself to use the great river of mediocrity; it had more money than a Washington lobbyist and none for the social conscience. One name leapt out from the pitiful collection of prose whores: Goodbooks. A bunch of rose-tinted willfully delusional Pollyannas giving away all the money they make, every guilt ridden cent. I had to admire them, the dumb schmucks. The thought of taking a machete to the mandarins of poverty, spilling their pinstriped guts across the first class cabin of lick-shit airlines is one to give a good night's sleep to the blameless. If anyone was going to get their hands on my ill-earned cash, it was going to be a nameless village in Tanzania, washing their children's heads in raw sewage. Goodbooks. The name rattled around in the hate-crazed ghetto of my head, looking for a place to set up and start recruiting. I leaned forward over the Mac and typed it into the menu bar. The desk moved 8.5 millimeters east and my tea vomited itself over my fly with an eerie accuracy. Help me, Franz. Thank you to Howard Wimshurst, animator extraordinaire for the help!
for the parts marked (something) here is what I heard: 1) Shitting 2) Turbid (meaning hazy from particles) 3) Bloated 4) lick-shit airlines I could be wrong with any of these though haha
man, even after so many years this project is jaw-dropping, im still amazed by every second of this!
Thank you to everyone for your support, we appreciate every like and share.
At first, my reaction was "This sounds like Hunter." And then I saw the glazed aviators and visor rising like a shark from Spielberg's nightmare. And then the hollow words crawled out: "My God, it's the ghost of fear and loathing."
top class animation
I discovered this years ago. Every once in a great while I remember it and watch it again. Just brilliant, brilliant work.

it is criminal how little views this video has, because it is the best animated short i have ever seen
i'm pretty sure this is the most amazing piece of animation that I've ever seen.
By far best commercial ever.
Excellent homage to HST. The animation, dialogue and voice work are all top notch. All for a good cause as well.
The best animated transformations I've ever seen, the 2nd one is "afternoon class"
This is one of the best animations I've watched recently. Respect!
This is one of the best animations I've watched.
still one of the greatest things ive ever seen
This video is, to put it kindly, brilliant.
I've used your service, and I think its the best.
Thank you.
I hope you do some more videos.
A modicum of ketamine can be most efficacious as this short animated film demonstrates!.....very gonzo indeed!
I agree good sir
I totally got a Hunter S. Thompson vibe from this video too. I think the glasses, cigarette and hat really gave it away.
Yes! Because I remember when Thompson was about more than his craft. He always wanted to stop his never-ending pursuit for truth through words and he always wanted to be a spokesperson for a company. This is the single greatest animation I have ever seen. Who animated it?
Great work, anyone know the agency / team that worked on this? Also the song... mmm yes, the song.
I could pause every scene and it would be art.

Brilliant work. Thank you!

@Caqui ...That makes a lot of sense, and I feel silly for not realising the first few hundred times I watched it.

The spoken word reminded me of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. That was the reference right?
This was amazing , the rant was spot on , Who did the voice ? Almost gave me a flashback !!!!!

Amazing animation! Trippy and gross but still amazing.
I like good animation
Outstanding!!.....Now do Bukowski!
Anyone know what program was used to make this?
Is Goodbooks still active?
@rionhunter "Help me Franz."
Franz Kafka, the man who wrote Metamorphosis.
Could you do a Mark Twain commercial next? Or maybe a Poe?
how are these videos done? is there a resonable alternative to aftereffects?
if anyone know tutorials, downloadsites etc. please IM to me! i would appreciate it MUCH :)

Did you come from motion design ??
thanks for everything Hunter S. Thompson, nothing like the gonzo
The name for which you're looking is "Hunter S. Thompson."
uhm,.... it a tribute to Hunter S.Thompson writings of Gonzo. Hunter is S.Thompson is Fear and Laothing.
@rionhunter Don't feel silly! The animation is stunning, so it's easy to get distracted by it. I know I was, haha.

Did Johnny Depp provide the voice for this? If not, it's a _damned_ good impersonation.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
thats insulting
Trent Ward What are you talking about?
захватывающая картина!Подскажите а как создавалось это?исключительно компьютерная графика или есть бумажная анимация?
@rionhunter Franz, the first name of Kafka.
@SocialZombie Definitely the reference, Hunter S Thompson-esque
brilliant

Yes. The narrator is meant to be Hunter S. Thompson.
Oh God, did you eat all this acid?

And I think the last line is "Help me, France" because this coincided with the release of goodbooks in France (I think). But it could very well be "Franz" from "Franz Kafka", obviously.
