  • Gregor is a soviet WW2 veteran and breadwinner for his elderly Father and young sister. In a loose adaptation of Franz Kafka’s “Metamorphosis” Gregor’s life is suddenly in turmoil after a tragic event pits his family against each other.

I find myself wishing that the book had ended this way. With Gregor transforming back into his human self. Imagine what the family's reaction would have been had they realized he was conscious and could understand them all along.

According to the original, they (especially father and mother) would be rather angry than sad, because Kafka wanted to point out what they see Gregor only as a breadwinner, and he`s not interesting to them in any other way. But, Kafka has the unbreakable rule: everything must end in the WORST way possible.

According to some sources his metamorphosis into a insect was just a metaphore for him becoming diffrent, like he may have acquired some deformalities or phsycological disorders etc. Idk if it's actually truth but it sure can feel this way.

I just miss the idea that in the book, they doesn't seems to mourn Gregor's death but instead seems relief and act like he died long ago and a ghost was hunting the house for a long time

      exactly
they never actually cared about gregor, just the money he brought them
the moment he became unable to provide for them (which i believe was him actually becoming disabled/mentally ill due to all the stress and dehumanizing put on him by work) they stopped caring

This is a really interesting adaptation. I love the change that rather than become used to Gregor's transformation and have it become a burden, his family, especially his sister, cannot get past it at all. So rather than him dying alone and forgotten, it's a split second decision made out of fear at his appearance that ends his life. Then he returns to his human form and it really nails home the family's greatest error; seeing him as a monster rather than Gregor. This is fantastic.

I've never read the book, and now I'm very intrigued into reading it. Watching this animation, just gives me lots of emotions. Just how awful it was for him to find out he's turned into an insect, which of course i don't know if he realizes how he looked like to be honest, but knew his own wife and his father-in-law or it's his father, possibly can be grandfather, are terrified and digusted looking at him. As for example, the old man wanted him to get out and kicked him. The woman dropped apples when trying to feed it, only having a possibly theory that she was aware it could be her husband, possibly. But she was still terried, and up until the insect heard his wife playing the violin, may have been a major flag of a roller coaster of heavy feelings, especially when he was running his way there, crying. It's theme is very genuine, love it. And then how the wife attacks the insect which in her eyes, are like a monster which she was just terrified of before, now having no hesitation to attack because of her own feelings and frustration, having such a large creature crawling up upon your legs. Now what was just really sad was the ending, where this insect, turns back into human. I honestly don't know much about the lore on how he became it, or if it's actually the huband who was the insect, i'm only assuming from the pictures but it could've just been some other relative. Overall, this animation set is absolutely admirable, it's so fit and matches perfectly with it's whole atmosphere. Love how everything was just viewed gray in the animation, it gives a sad theme. And I realized only red was coloured mostly, I wonder if that is supposed to be apart of something or more of an ideal image I can't get through. Also, the apples looked fine with the roses, but was it intentionally that the woman gave rotten apples to the insect on purpose? Oh and, Anyone know where to get the book? I'll check my library to see if I can find it. It is called Metamorphosis, or like it's a different title for the book? And this film.. i give it 10/10! rating recieved, and a new subscriber too!

Hi! thank you for such in depth comment. I am really glad you enjoyed my version of a famous story and now willing to read it! My film is just based on it and not a close adaptation. You can find Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka almost anywhere especially it is definitely online in electrronic or audio formats. If you haven't found a copy yet :)
My film is designed to be open to interpretations and visions of the audience like the original story itself. I put red to give a motif of blood and death to the film and just as esthetic point but I love hearing what other people see in it. His sister was giving Gregor rotten apples since he was an insect and that was suitable food for him in the book.
anyways thanks again for the comments and hope you enjoy the original book!

Gregor Samsa's story is a metaphor for sacrifice. His terrible state is directly due to overwork and personal dissatisfaction, which he burdened in order to give his family a life of relative comfort and security.
Gregor Samsa is one of the most pathetic, yet endearing figures in literature. Kafka's characterization of Gregor was perfect in representing his message throughout the story, because Gregor's evolution was the point and purpose of the entire novella.
Like Gregor, Kafka disliked his authoritarian father, and felt compelled to work a job he disliked in order to financially support his family. 2:51 [Amazon; Cram; Study]

    SPOILERS FOR THE NOVEL
I really like the adaptation but I’m wondering why the artist didn’t include the sister, Grete, nor the commissioner as they both play a tremendous role in the novel.
Can someone explain it to me?
I also feel like it would’ve been better if Gregor died the way he did in the book, because his father killed him and not his sister nor his mother as Kafka is known for the bad relationship he had with his father and in every single one of his stories the father figure is portrayed as a narcissist and egoist whom doesn’t appreciate his son.
Nevertheless I think the animation is really beautiful and well done! I was just wondering whether there’s a meaning behind these changes

Hi! Thanks for your comment and thoughts!
The girl in the short was his sister. I decided to eliminate Gregor's mother.
Overall, the story was loosely adapted and shortened for the sake of saving time. It was my thesis work in the fourth year of animation bachelor program in Sheridan College. I had to do an animation short in 8 months just by myself. I had composer and sound designer and bit off help from my friends colouring some animation scenes and helping with compositing of some more tech heavy shots but had to rely on myself for completing the film.
I really loved Metamorphosis when I read it in school and really wanted to try and give it a shot enterpreting it. Ideally if I had a team of animators and more time I would see Metamorphosis being at least 30 minutes film. I would like to include all the details and psychological aspect of it as well as a story build up leading to the death of Gregor.
So when I was adapting it and thinking of the way how to shorten it, I thought of Portrait of Dorian Gray. The final scene where Dorian becomes what he was on the picture of himself. It inspired the alternative ending of my short. It became a reverse metamorphosis or perhaps metamorphosis never happened in real and it was Gregor's family's perception of him the whole time.
I found that death like it happened in the book would need more character exploration for it to make sense visually. However, I knew that my alternation of the story will distort original novel and create different feeling for people who enjoyed Metamorphosis as it is.
Overall, it was a tough experience and my very first short film. It really made me appreciate written stories and film making more as different forms of art that create one feeling with different methods and techniques. But sometimes they do make us feel not the same about the story that being told.
Again thank you for your feedback and I really think that storytelling of all different forms have to be free for interpretation by the audience. It is more fun and beautiful to create a dialouge rather than teaching someone what one thinks is right.

The Metamorphosis is said to be one of Franz Kafka's best works of literature. It shows the difficulties of living in a modern society and the struggle for acceptance of others in a time of need. [123HelpMe] 5:05

Hello. First I want to commend on what a profound animation this is; our class was absolutely stupefied when we stumbled upon this masterpiece. It provided a whole new insight into viewing the book Metamorphosis with an unprecedented interpretation.
Speaking of which, may I ask if there's a symbolism behind the apples? The vibrant color really makes it stand out from other elements of the film, and I was wondering if there were any hidden implication behind those choices.

As i remember; when Kafka was on his deathbed he wanted his friend to burn all of his works.
I’m glad this friend read the significance of the moment and Franz’s work to let them all flourish.
That’s some Student becoming the master shit right there.
This and star wars are pretty tight examples of that. 1:33
