The discovery of radiation brought about all sorts of radioactive quackery. But none was more dramatic than the case of the Radium Girls.
Let me tell you their story.

What happened?
I first heard about the radium girls from my history teacher when we went on a bit of a tangent about officers being shot by snipers in part due to the glow from their radium watches making them identifiable on the battlefield. As a man who was very much a champion for human rights and workers rights, that naturally lead to a tangent about the radium girls. I greatly admire the strength and perseverance of those seven young women in the face of adversity. They paid with their lives that we might enjoy the protections they rightly should have had. As morbid as it may be, it was this story from my history teacher which makes me wish to own one of those radium dialled watches, to wear very very rarely, but to keep safe, and to admire it for the symbol it is of the strength of the working class.

You know, while of course this format and your comedic bits had me giggling and laugh hilariously, this genuinely had me appalled and shivered by just how awful experience the women went through with this. I think ever since HBO's Chernobyl came out, any media carefully documenting the deadly effects of Radiation poisoning or exposure has me scared shitless due to how it's horror that can still happen in reality. Nothing can compare those gory or flesh melting practical effects you see to that of radiation.
This was a well researched video covering a very unknown event to a time period I've been exposed many times now. It's really messed up that a job that finally catered to women that could grant them financial autonomy and even fame was still a facade with deadly results. I truly think this could be a good historical miniseries to cover to that of Chernobyl. Just imagine the female characters you watch trying to fight this in court will eventually die and its up to the next victims to avenge them and then the climax of the final episode is of an actor portraying Catherine Donohue testifying in her last breaths and still in the end she would barely be alive to at least see the company responsible for her death found guilty.
Just brutal. Anyway, awesome video I hope you do more obscure but really interesting historical events like this. The German Revolution videos is still my favorite. But this one is also top tier.

I actually saw a play that my college was doing a month ago, which was based on this, I’m in a musical for the theater program’s spring season, and our cast was invited to watch their Understudy night. The play is called These Shining Lives, and it was amazing, even my cast mates were crying.

I LIVED IN THE TOWN WHERE THE RADIUM DIAL COMPANY WAS!!! I think one of my indirect relatives did get the effects of radiation. Though, I'm pretty sure her case was minor, and it was just cancer of a sort.

Fun story about a golfer named Eben Byers: after injuring his arm in an accident in 1927, he was prescribed Radithor, the radium water mentioned in this video. He reportedly drank several doses a day until he began experiencing symptoms similar to those experienced by the Radium Girls (headaches, losing teeth, disintegrating jaw). He died in 1932, but his body was literally so radioactive that he had to be buried in a lead coffin, and when it was exhumed over 30 years later in 1965, it still contained 225,000 becquerels of radiation, 51 times as much natural radiation is present in a human body and equivalent to about 40 pounds of uranium in radioactivity
