This spring as the pandemic spread around the world, all public gatherings were cancelled, including choirs and mindfulness retreats. We have missed singing together! So I started an ambitious project of trying to put together a world-wide virtual singing group to perform the song "When I Rise". This is a song inspired by the writing and teaching of Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh and writer/farmer Wendell Berry. I have arranged the music into a choral work, which I recorded parts for everyone to sing along with. The response was amazing! Many, many people from around the world sent in videos of themselves singing one of the parts, or playing an instrument. Once I had downloaded them all, I had the task of editing it all together. Turns out, my computer was not up for the task, as it proved spectacularly by dying...
Now, many months later, I have set up a new computer system, and gathered my courage to take another attempt, this time with much more success :-) I hope you enjoy the results!

Dear Sangha , Dear Community What a wonderful treat to wake up to this beautifully arranged, sung, played, and digital virtual choir with gorgeous accompaniment. Happy New Year To the When I rise World Wide Choir. Shane much respect to your commitment to sharing the dharma through song so intentionally connecting the Sangha with such beautiful Inter Are-ness . I can really appreciate this effort on so many levels. I often lead my Sangha , Hopping Tree Sangha here in Amherst MA, in practice Songs and chanting, which is hard to do in real time in harmony/ group singing as you know, so your Website of reimagined harmonies as well as taking the time to part out each is an invaluable resource for teaching and learning. I love your morning chant in Spanish Trio. i know one of the singers, Albert from Morning Sun and Blue Cliff Monastery. I hope I can be involved in your next Sangha music project in the future. Either virtually or in person on retreat. A bow to the teacher, the teachings, and the community of practitioners. ()

Thank you beautiful sangha! How did you do this? I have tried to sing with others over Zoom and the sound is delayed, distorted, etc. Did folks sing their individual parts and then Shane engineered them together? LOVED EVERY MOMENT! Gracias.

This song has been created using the process of traditional folk music. Shane Jewell composed this arrangement and all the harmonies, as well as the music to the "waking up this morning I smile" section, while Thich Nhat Hanh wrote the lyrics to that section. Wendel Berry wrote the poem that is the first verse, and Wendy Tuck wrote the melody for the first verse back in the 1970's. Many other anonymous people wrote lyrics for the later verses. I believe all these people are happy to have the song continue in the world, so long as it continues to be given away for free, and credit is given. So I cannot give permission, but I can encourage you to sing it, and teach it to others, and give it away to the world :) I would not say it is in the public domain, since Wendel Berry and Thich Nhat Hanh are both published authors who have copyright ownership of their texts. But this is a song for our times, and I hope it continues to be passed from singer to singer for a long time to come...
