    I bought this laptop in the summer of 2012 and it's been a reliable extension of my brain ever since. I won't lie. In the first year, I developed a bit of a nervous tick from having to deal with random shutdowns related to t430s built before 9/7/12 (BSOD Stop Code 101 Issue). Lenovo took some time to fix it. But the contact person was good about updating me, and once fixed, it has been the best laptop experience I've ever had---got my first laptop in 1999. That keyboard is a work of art (non-back-lit version with more key travel than the alternatives). You can't beat the trackpoint, as your fingers never have to leave home row, which means you're one step closer to a frictionless computing environment. After the t430s experience, I see all fundamentalist touchpad users as luddites that have decided to remain ignorant of superior technology.
    P.S. Just remember to clean out dust from the fan vents with some compressed air if it starts running hot and you'll be able to pass that thing on to your grandchildren.
    TLDR; T430s => Mind Blown: This machine is unf*ckwithable

      Preach it brother. I turned my T430 into a desktop machine and bought a used T430s with an SSD and 8GB... it's all I need and I plan to use it until it breaks. When it does I'll buy whatever the latest T series is that still has the trackpoint... you can take my trackpoint when you pry it from my cold dead finger.

      Year late to your comment but unless you fancy learning new skills and work arounds you can't go wrong with a T420 - models after need bios hacks to allow non genuine parts eg. battery, wifi card etc. The IBM 7 row keyboard is prob the best invented and the speakers face upwards, not underneath.
      S models are slimmer but were not designed for Corporate IT dept accessibility or upgrading, everything in the non S models are.

    Recent Lenovo convert after friend lent me his X201. Now have i7 T420s (with Nvidia option) picked up for less than £100 - great machine with many years life ahead.
    Though uglier and heavier, the non S models appear easier to work on & upgrade, also Lenovo stopped non genuine parts like batteries from the 430 on being used.
    Just picked up a T60 today for £10 - putting Zorin Lite Education on and it's going to my Godson.

    I bought this Laptop and installed Ubuntu on it. It runs like a Champ! My home PC is a dedicated Gaming PC, but I often keep my laptop right next to it... and use Synergy so I can use my mouse and keyboard on both laptops. (Symless.com) I mainly use the laptop so I can skype on it, or do other tasks,... and then game on my desktop. I also bring it to work, and use it during my break.
    Gaming isn't very functional,... but I haven't tried it in windows yet.

    I rebuilt an i7/nVidia powered, T430s, a few years ago, that was shipped from FL, to TX. I shipped it to my daughter from Texas to Germany. It was shipped BACK to me in Texas a few years later, right before my daughter was stationed back in the U.S. She forgot it after leave, so I had to ship it to her, in Louisiana. It survived all that shipping, and still runs great! She still uses it in her studies in OCS. Runs better now, than it did new.

    What are your thoughts on the T420/s? I've been thinking about getting a T430s as my first Thinkpad (thanks in large part to your video) but the comfy old school keyboard on the T420/s is hard to ignore. I don't have a great reference point to compare the power difference between the two. It doesn't seem like a huge difference but I could be totally wrong.
    Edit: is the CPU accessable in the T430s to replace the paste?

    • @panoramacircle3281
      @panoramacircle3281  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The T420s has the older Sandy bridge and should hold up quite well depending on your use scenario but Ivy bridge did have good energy savings in comparison. The older HD3000 igpu is slower if you want to play anything. Only the T420s, not T420, has USB3 so consider that as well. You could mod the T420/s to have the old keyboard but that is quite some work to do. The T430s has the fan on the underside of the board so replacing the paste is quite some work here unfortunately.

      Apprently there are 3 keyboard manufacturers for the T430s according to this reddit thread bit.ly/2IWdaL0. A lot of people seem to think the non-back-lit keyboard has the best key travel. I have no point of reference for the alternatives, but I have been using the non-back-lit keyboard for 7 years and I think it feels amazing.

    • @panoramacircle3281
      @panoramacircle3281  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello, that should be no problem, remove keyboard and bezel and fan and replace it. Use some good paste like Arctic MX-4 and you should be fine. The I7-3632qm has 35W TDP, so single thread performance will not be faster than your standard i5 dual core, but you have four cores now. The i7 3840qm has 45W TDP, so even more performance, but might throttle under full load over time.

    • @romuro2
      @romuro2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, if I´m understanding your comment correctly: That means that I won´t get more speed, but I´ll be able to do more simultaneous tasks, am I right? Thanks.

    • @panoramacircle3281
      @panoramacircle3281  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You won't get more speed for single thread programs like internet browser or stand office apps. However there are multithreaded apps like modern games, VM, video streaming and editing that run multithreaded and benefit greatly from a quad-core.

      Thnak you! i d'ont know, is very interesting.
      T430 maybe is better opción for me!
      Do you think that is a good opcion in 2018? actually i have a Acer Aspire Timeline U whit hybrid SSD20gb+300HDD and i3 2367M and 4gb RAM, since 2012, win 7 home and a i happy whit it overall.
      And i have too a Lenovo Ideapad 100s-14ibr whit 128ssd and 4gb RAM, Celeron N3050, win 10 home, but the LCD pannel, the touchpad and the speakers i dont like...
      Do yo think that i need a Lenovo T430 Thinkpad and sell my Ideapd?
      Thanks!

      Yes, the T430 is still quite powerful, in particular with a quadcore cpu and very low cost today. An alternative would be a T450 which is lighter, is a bit more expensive (only dual core cpus) and has IPS displays as an option. The ideapads are quite weak and low cost, but they are very light. Maybe a X230 or X250 is also an alternative?

      The T430s can be upgraded to an SSD, and 16gb/PC3-12800 ram. do that, and it's as usable as any new computer, and better than most.

    У меня T420s - точно такой же, без островной клавы - как мне её не хватает.
    А вообще slim - это downgrade - лучше брать не слимовую версию, в которую нормального размера харды влезут, а не те, что по 7 мм.

      Both the T-s and the X-series have soldered cpus that cannot be removed unfortunately. Only up to T430 and T440p have exchangeable cpus.

      Probably, the T430/s has either a 768p or 900p low contrast TN panel. If you enjoy contrast get a newer model like aT450 with an 1080p IPS panel.

      I think it's a bit higher in my neck of the woods. I'm seeing $200 asked for something like a T420s and $230 for an X240. Sometimes lower but it those are usually sold quickly.

    • @panoramacircle3281
      @panoramacircle3281  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it depends on the condition and extras, 200$ is still good depending on what components are installed (RAM, SSD, screen...).

    I have both T430s and T420s, and I think T420s is better. why? T430s was hobbled multi-monitor support, and even with nvidia graphics and dock, you can have only two monitor (only one external monitor with thinkpad screen on). T430s also had security chip which prevented use of third party battery. In addition, keyboard on T430s is less durable and less convenient to use than T420s keyboard. Performance is about the same as far as I can tell, as I am not a gamer, but for productivity, T420s is much better than T430s.

    • @panoramacircle3281
      @panoramacircle3281  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, there are some nice things ion the T430s like the Intel HD4000 or backlit keyboard but the T430s is also quite a nice machine.
