I have tried many times to put a eye in rope. But with this clever coloring of the strands. You make it possible to see and more importantly understand that one strand down one strand up. Thank you for your time making this video.
Went back into the archives to reference this pre-Renko skill. It's like a time machine; long hair, the green machine, basic boating skills. You've come a long way Stu! Cheers to many more years of great information and entertainment.
One of the best videos on youtube for splicing. You keep everything in frame and explain it well. Using dye is a fantastic idea to help visualise. Thanks for going to the additional effort.
Thanks Stu. You made this look so easy that even I could understand it. I have tried this many times before but it was always hit and miss. Can't wait to try it again following your instructions. Cheers.
Hello Stu, I agree whole-heartedly with all your fans who love your teaching! I do as well. You are a natural teacher and I learn so much watching your videos. You've given me the courage to take some old Evinrudes, Johnsons, and Mercs and try to rehab them back into service. And now I know I can splice a rope or put a loop in it. Thank you very much from Maryland in the US!
Wow thank you ! For years I`ve tried to learn off people to splice rope , but always got lost through them not making it as simple as your way !! Dying the different strands shows exactly how it`s done . At last , now I can splice with the rest of them , cheers from NZ.
Thanks Stu, Keep the tips and tricks and skills tuts coming. Even managed a reverse splice on the end of one of my mooring ropes after watching this vid - no more frayed ends, and bulky bow lines. Cheers
Good demo on how to spice. when I splice a rope I also roll the splice in my hands ,It just helps a bit. With nylon rope you can cut off the excess heat the ends and roll the splice in your hands to stop the ends from fraying .
I can't believe I actually forgot how to splice a rope, but in my defense it's 30 years since I last spliced one... Thanks for this video, you make it look so easy (and it is). The coloured strands really help show how it's done too (for those who haven't spliced a rope before at all). Cheers!
I studied your video 3 times, followed your instructions to the letter, took my time...and my rope looks like a dos breakfast. On the upside, my 6 year old nailed it 😂😂😂
Thanks mate. It's funny you should mentioned a chain splice as one of the videos coming up soon is on installing an anchor winch so it makes a natural extension to that.
My dad showed me how to do it when I was a kid, but I couldn't remember how to get it started. Thanks. Also, roll the braided end on the deck under your foot and it will smooth out the braid.
Awesome enjoying your videos. Will get my first boat this year in New Zealand. Aluminum fyran 12 or 14ft for local fishing. Use to kayak fish alot but staying in the Philippines for a year back in July. I Subscribed now thanks.
Well, thanks Stu (I believe it's Stu?). At last I can splice, and I'm a 65yo slow learner. There will be a Danger tee shirt getting around Greenhead WA quite soon. (next pension day)
Great instruction . I have spent all of my early life on commercial boats of one sort or another. 2 things I could never do was splice/tie knots and swim . I know it sounds stupid. But I got paid to stay on the boat. Lol. Maybe that could be a short vid series for you to make . Various knots . Maybe one a week. Not much out of pocket expense. Better yet do it drunk for comedic effect .
Gday mate good video and good instruction using colors ,do you whip the tails of your splices ? when i was in assault pioneers in the army we always had to roll the splice dont know if it did anything just made it look neater good video
I generally only whip the ends of cut rope, not so much the splices. Yes, rolling after finished is common practice to get everything to settle into its position.
Congratulations mate, glad you got it sussed. Shirts are available online here dangarmarine.com.au/collections/merchandise/products/dangar-marine-t-shirt
Does the splice ever unravel at the far end or is the pressure of the rope enough to keep it intact? do you ever need to seal off the loose ends? Or melt them together?
+Dayne Cowan Once a splice has five tucks it will stay well on its own. Sometimes people half each strand and then join the halves to the neighbours using whipping twine as a way of locking it in but this mostly decorative. The only time I have seen a splice come undone is then a mooring rope on the bow of a boat didn't have a swivel in it so as the boat spun with each tide the twist in the rope began to unravel making the strands straight and parallel rather than a spiral. Under all normal conditions it will stay together really well.
Tip from a former fish farmer: Tape the ends of each strand... makes it a thousand times easier! Otherwise, brilliant demonstration.. unfortunately, splicing is something you forget how to do the start EVERY time after not doing it for a while!
Hi Stu, another great vid. You may want to slow down your intro however. I know that you're Dangar Stu. But when you say it in the intro sometimes it sounds like "Dinger Stew" (Not very appetising) Love your work.
thanks Stu, I spend a lot of time watching your very informative videos Ive just bought a house boat in ontaroio Canada check it out (leisure island house boat rentals) ive been renting one for years from these guys and spend a week with my daughter fishing last year one came for sale and I bought it and have found your videos a godsend thanks man appreciate it

Glad it was helpful!
Definitely the clearest demonstration of how to splice on utube. Thank you, PHIL.
Thanks Phil, glad it came across okay.
I agree. have looked elsewhere on youtube but this is the clearest demo by far
Brilliant idea coloring the strands.... Heart of a teacher, thank you
I have always wanted to learn how to splice a rope, and after watching this I feel ready to give it a go. Thank you very much for the great video.
You can do it!
the dye on the ropes was brilliant for demonstration.
Thanks mate.

Without the best and clearest video on you tube on how to splice a rope. Much appreciated. Thanks All best Mart
Thanks Marty, glad the video helped you. :)
Another clear and concise video, many thanks

Very good Dangar! Easy peasy! Gracias mate!
what an awesome way to portray this~. Can't wait to give it a go- Never been abloe to wrap mi head around it but this makes it sound promising!
great demonstration of splicing. Thanks Stu
You're welcome mate.
After 3 years still very useful. I taped the ends of strands, works well. This site is a good resource!!
Thank you very helpful. The dying of rope strands made it simple to understand. 👍🏼
You're welcome mate, glad the video helped.
thanks champion always wanted to know how to do a splice
You're welcome. Splicing is a really handy skill to have I reckon.
Great bit of work captain !

Hey Jon, glad you've enjoying the vids. Nice work on doing a back splice, probably one of the harder ones to do!

He or she must be a genius!
Dangar Marine he's clearly a lot smarter than me, lol.
Agree with Phillip, a great demonstration. Look forward to you doing some more. Maybe a chain splice?
Thanks mate. It's funny you should mentioned a chain splice as one of the videos coming up soon is on installing an anchor winch so it makes a natural extension to that.

Thank you for the demo
Already said...but coloring the rope...brillant!
Thanks mate. :)
Thanks. Well explained and demonstrated.
You're welcome Khalid, glad the video helped you.
Yes, it really helped. Now I can do the eye splice which I previously couldn't. Thanks.
Hey Dangar
Thanjs for the rope braiding lesson, will that work on steel cable also ?
You're welcome. Never don't it with steel, but can't see why not.
Great instruction . I have spent all of my early life on commercial boats of one sort or another. 2 things I could never do was splice/tie knots and swim . I know it sounds stupid. Great video. Thank you
Just done my first splice probably about 10 tucks but hey it works looks good and easy video to follow 👍🏼
Where could one acquire one Dangar shirt?
Congratulations mate, glad you got it sussed. Shirts are available online here dangarmarine.com.au/collections/merchandise/products/dangar-marine-t-shirt
Good vid - thanks for posting :)

nice to have would be to put a piece of heat shrink tubing over the splice for longevity
How many strands does each strand have? Sorry Stu..had to ask. Great video mate...!
Very good way by colouring your tags .but would like to see a back splice. When I done my dog man course they didn't show us a back splice
Back splice is pretty similar. It is a top knot and then regular splicing back down the rope. I'll do a vid on it soon.
Tip from a former fish farmer: Tape the ends of each strand... makes it a thousand times easier! Otherwise, brilliant demonstration.. unfortunately, splicing is something you forget how to do the start EVERY time after not doing it for a while!
Hi mate, yes, taping the ends can make them easier to poke through, that's for sure.
Cheers for that’
Cheers
strongest part of the rope now
Hi Stu, another great vid. You may want to slow down your intro however. I know that you're Dangar Stu. But when you say it in the intro sometimes it sounds like "Dinger Stew" (Not very appetising) Love your work.
Dinger Stew, like Larks Tongues and Otters Spleens, is something The Romans did for us, apparrently, and therefore is not to be despised
step 1. throw the poly prop rope in the garbage, step 2. get proper line for boating LUL. good video mate
