He leaded in the front end so it flowed smoothly back to front, no rubber weather striping at the nose. Beautiful free flowing silver with black interior. 440 with a cross ram 2 ...4 barrel carb set up. Believe it or not one could eat an egg off the battery without worry he kept it that clean. We also started the Winged Warriors magazine just a few pages . Nothing special. The way Richard Petty became involved I believe( please forgive me if I am wrong, it was a long time ago and my memory is not hitting on all eight cylinders) was through an STP representative. Back in 1969 I was 12 & discovered racing. The Dodge Charger Daytona sealed the deal, I was hooked on muscle cars & have been ever since. I actually came across a Daytona in a junkyard in '77. I didn't have the $500 to buy it. I still mourn to this day...

I've seen this car on a few Mopar groups on Facebook, its good to actually hear the story of it and not just yelling at people who believe it's a real black Superbird,
Mr. Bob Jennings you have an absolutely amazing collection!!! A collection that most anyone would be envious of!!! In reality, most all of us can only dream of owning a stable, with an inventory of the pure thoroughbreds, such as yours!!! This over-the-top “triple black” specimen that you have right here is absolutely INSANE!!! It is just as BEAUTIFUL as it is AWESOME!!! I can’t help but to wonder as to why CD&P never offered these 2 cars in a “triple black” option!!! I have an interesting, or at least I think it is, question for you about the paint. At the 3:45 mark of the video the camera begins to come around the rear of the car on the driver side and then proceeds down towards the driver door while giving us a great shot of the fantastic body work and that elegant and gorgeous black paint. However, something caught my eye!!! As he went down the rear quarter panel where the “BLACK ICE” band logo was once painted. The paint looked somewhat funny, almost wavy and I thought to myself, “hold up, Bob just said that he had a friend who was a great body man go all over the exterior paint and what not and I know that there is absolutely NO WAY that someone left that “BLACK ICE” logo on the side of the car and just painted over it. NO FREAKING WAY!!!”. So, me being me, I rewound the video and played it a few times over at 1/4 speed and it was ONLY then when I realized that what I saw was, in fact, NOT what I originally thought it was. It was, however, the word “PLYMOUTH” that I saw. It was the old stylized “Plymouth” font of that era that was laid down on the rear quarter of this beauty. It is the same “Plymouth” logo that was originally on some of, if not all, the Superbirds. I did not see it anywhere else in the video, nor did I hear you mention anything about that cool feature on this “one-off” beast. But to me, it looks like “ghost” letters, if you will. You know the ones that you can see at a certain angle or when the light is hitting it just right and then at other times, or even at night, they are mostly, if not completely, invisible. Since I just have to know, my interesting question is this… “are you aware of this really cool feature that resides on the rear of this car???” or is it just my mind playing tricks on me and it is something else, all together different, that I am seeing???”. Either way, “ghost” letters or something else, could you provide a little bit more information on this part of the car??? Thanks in advance and thank you for sharing this amazing beauty with us!!!
Jon, you caught us in a secret we usually reserve for live viewings only. Yes, the Plymouth lettering decal is ghosted in black on the rear quarters, right where it was originally! Thanks, wow great eyes. Bob
Another amazing car and video. I remember reading an article in the early 70s about a black superbird used I believe in new Mexico or Nevada as a chase car by the highway patrol. I can't remember the magazine but I remember it had a couple black and white pictures of the car. You never know . Awsome car !
That one does still exist, "Blackbird" was New Mexico State Police car. Although it was painted black while in service, originally it was built as a Petty blue 440 4bbl auto. It still exists today and was sold within the last couple of years and will hopefully make a public appearance sometime in the near future.
It is just the meanest, yet coolest looking color. They made black Daytonas in 1969 and I too think they missed the boat in 70 by not having black Superbirds.

In '79' I met a guy in Austin, Tx who had just bought a black Superbird with black and white houndstooth interior. He said he bought it in Ohio and it had been a pace car once...I always wandered about that car. I assumed it was custom back then but are you familiar with a Superbird pacecar?
Fantastic Car. I remember being about 4 years old and seeing a few of these (maybe it was the same one all the time) growing up in Iowa. I always thought it looked so cool, funny that they had trouble selling them back then.
I was hoping there was a special order black superbird made... my brother and I own the only early 70's Corvette LT1 built in black. We have 20 letters back and forth with GM and the original owner in regards to the black paint.
Very interesting video also very entertaining. i never been a mopar fan bc as a teenager i was trying to fix a flat tire on my first car a 1965 Plymouth Belvedere & the damn lug nut threads were left handed which i did not kno at the time & i broke all 5 lugs by my own brute strenghth-- no breaker bar i didnt even kno such a tool existed when i was 16 in 1977. So ive held a grudge against Mopar for decades i dont of course any more-hold a grudge✌️
Hey Bob I just found your channel and I live in Elizabethtown glad to have you as a neighbor brother. I would like to see your collection sometime if you've ever got them out
I was in Portland Oregon in 1988 and saw a Black Superbird for sale at the swap meet. The guy wanted 11,000 for it and I walked right by because that might as well have been 100k to me at the time. Wonder if it’s the same car?🤔
@@bassthis I honestly can’t remember. I remember the primary color being black and I remember the price. Still a lot of money at the time but in retrospect a pittance. And if I would’ve bought it for 11 I would’ve sold it a year later for 15 and thought I made a killing. And then have to live with that. Lol

Standby...just prior to 9/11 a black superbird popped up on ebay. I want to say it was an original 6 bbl 4 speed car. There were pics of the car sitting in the banked nascar track and it had a front chin spoiler. I wanted to buy the car and I think 35 or 36k was the number. Now it was advertised as having paced Talladega nascar race before and petty had something to do with the car? I ended up not getting the car and for the life of me I don't know why? I think I had finally just found the Mr 5 and 50 hemi superbird at the same time as a lot happened just before 9/11. Was that car not authentic?
Doug, there are/were a number of clones painted black. There were none that came from the factory black. This is not a clone, it is a real 'Bird. I can't answer for the one you remember though.

If we only knew back then what we know now and had a bit of foresight, we’d all either have amazing collections or we’d be stinking, filthy rich! I’d prefer the nice collection personally!!
@@1982MCI
Or… we could have a bit smaller amazing car collection and still be HALFWAY stinking filthy rich!?!?!? Who says that you can’t have your cake and eat it too!?!?!? 😂😂😂
That was the days of the gas crisis when everyone was ditching their muscle cars for imported small Hondas and Toyotas and also Ford Piintos and Chevrolet Vegas. Yeah....
cool build interesting story on a very historic car.
My favorite channel on TH-cam!!!!
Thanks Rob!
In '79' I met a guy in Austin, Tx who had just bought a black Superbird with black and white houndstooth interior. He said he bought it in Ohio and it had been a pace car once...I always wandered about that car. I assumed it was custom back then but are you familiar with a Superbird pacecar?
They never paced any national events but some local tracks used them for pace cars, but they were never anything official.
Fantastic Car. I remember being about 4 years old and seeing a few of these (maybe it was the same one all the time) growing up in Iowa. I always thought it looked so cool, funny that they had trouble selling them back then.
when i worked for the DOT in NC back in 1987,i saw a black Superbird near Danbury NC.Neat looking day 2 car with sidepipes.
Love those wing cars!
I was hoping there was a special order black superbird made... my brother and I own the only early 70's Corvette LT1 built in black. We have 20 letters back and forth with GM and the original owner in regards to the black paint.
Love the car, love the story! 👍👍
There was a black Superbird in the drive in burger joint scene in the movie Dazed and Confused (1993). Is this the same car?
That was a clone, sorry
What a great idea ? Been doing custom work for years, never pictured this car in black,... beautiful !
Thanks for sharing Mr j
Thanks Todd, I appreciate it!
That is Awesome Bob !! I didn't realize you owned that many winged cars, why do you drive the one to Alaska? Keep up the good work.
Hey Glenn, thanks for responding. In a future video I will recap the 2nd Alaska trip from last month and maybe explain "why".
At 15 my dad got me a highly used 51 DeSoto in good shape to fool with .....I broke 3 of the lugs till I started to wonder about the L and R threads.
Yeah those left hand lugs (driver's side only) have led to thousands of broken studs. I've been known to forget too. Thanks for the comments.
Absolutely stunning looking super bird don't care if it wasn't originally black it is very tastefully done and very very pretty
Hey Bob I just found your channel and I live in Elizabethtown glad to have you as a neighbor brother. I would like to see your collection sometime if you've ever got them out
Very nice car, love the color.
Nice video Bob... Look forward in seeing you in Nov.
Thanks Troy-see you and your Bonneville Bird at MCACN!
I was in Portland Oregon in 1988 and saw a Black Superbird for sale at the swap meet. The guy wanted 11,000 for it and I walked right by because that might as well have been 100k to me at the time. Wonder if it’s the same car?🤔
Did this black bird have silver paint on the nose too?
@@bassthis I honestly can’t remember. I remember the primary color being black and I remember the price. Still a lot of money at the time but in retrospect a pittance. And if I would’ve bought it for 11 I would’ve sold it a year later for 15 and thought I made a killing. And then have to live with that. Lol
The only yellow superbird that I knew of in Houston WAS FOR SALE AT A NEW RV DEALERSHIP ON INTERSTATE 59. IT WAS 6 pack 4 speed also
Aww man, I just now remembered where I parked that car.
Cool car, fantastic job preserving it!
What a awesome car!! Too bad your don't trailer one or two of your birds north to the Woodward Dream Cruise on Saturday August 20th 2022. We'll over 1.5 million spectators, with approximately 45 thousand vintage, classic, muscle car event. The Cruise is up and down Woodward Avenue, from 9 mile rd to Pontiac and back to 9 mile. All the parking lots along Woodward by now are spoken for, but I'm sure you could find a area on any cross street to un load and set up camp!!! Woodward & 14 mile Duggans Irish pub great place to eat with liquid refreshments. Pro tip, Cruise Woodward on Sunday is still good for die hard stragglers and enthusiasts. Enjoy!! PS: If your looking for a car you haven't seen on years--- you'll find and see it at Dream Cruise.
More of a legend than the Black Ghost.
There used to be a black Superbird in South Texas that every now and then would go out and play with the highway patrol just because he could outrun them I don't know if this is the car or not only saw it once and I only saw it for a couple seconds before it was gone
That looked awesome with the corvette rims.
You were telling me about this video that was going to be out, under the tent at Carlisle. I'm the 70 FK5 GTX guy. Nice car!
Thanks Mike, and I LOVE your GTX.
Gtx and coronets were my favorites but the bird in black looks great
The black is awesome. Beautiful! Is "Plymouth" on the quarter panel? Lettering being black it would be hard to see.
You had me going there for a moment thanks for the honesty great video
Beautiful car, and insane winged car collection! In 1986 I had a chance to buy one for $3000 but my buddies laughed at the nose and huge wing so I gave into peer pressure and bought a 1969 Camaro. Oh how I regret that decision.
Best part is the "knick" in the muffler. Awesome its getting driven.
Very cool !
Hugh-always appreciate your comments!
Sunfire yellow was 1969, 1970 is Lemon Twist and is a completely different shade of yellow 🤦
Thanks for sharing. I know where there’s a 69charger daytona SE model with a buddy seat and a column shift with electric windows 440 4 barrel car. Currently in sad shape and no motor.
there was a black Superbird in the Chrysler dealer showroom in Escanaba michigan for years
Beautiful car, I wish I could have made it to mopar madness this year to see some your cars
Great show with even greater people, you would have enjoyed it. Thanks, Bob
In the fall of 1987 there was a black 1970 Superbird with 440 4 Barrel, auto trans listed for sale in Hemmings Classified. The car and seller were located in either Toronto or Ontario Canada. I don't exactly remember where. The car was black on black with a silver accent paint job on the nose. Seller stated the car was originally lime green. Anyone know what happened to this Superbird?
The Air Grabber hood was available on a 1970 Road Runner, had one. He may cut one up, but he didn't design or make one.
used to talk to the guy who had it for a while in alaska lost track with him here on youtube. even had a video driving it on winding hills.was awesomwe to know someone who had a dream car i so long to to own.cools as could be.iw as just thinking of the car recnetly then i see this vid.
Hey, that was a really cool video, down to earth and informative. Oh, and by the way, that is one cool car!😎
Thanks Alex
