  • A cluster of bristlenose pleco eggs are found at the bottom of the pleco breeding tank. The eggs were being eaten by two female bristlenose plecos. I saved the eggs from certain death, and then incubated them myself. See the eggs hatch and learn about baby bristlenose plecos.

    • @TheDave333

      The male was still in the tank. However, once the eggs are ejected from the cave where the fish spawn, they're usually abandoned because they're too hard to take care of out in the open. In fact, an exhausted male will sometimes intentionally eject the eggs from his cave. This can happen if he's the only male in a tank with too many females who are constantly laying eggs. Part of the reason is that the male doesn't usually eat while he's tending to his young, so repeated spawning can take its toll, and cause him to abandon the eggs. Self-preservation is usually more important than procreation.

    Is there a reason why the fry do all of that wiggling? Is it to keep their muscles engaged? Burn off excess energy? Or maybe even to move fresher water closer to their gills?
    It'd seem like a waste of precious energy otherwise...

    • @TheDave333
      @TheDave333  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the wriggling keeps the water around them moving, so they can get more oxygen. All fry wriggle/ wiggle, some more than others. Newborn cichlids wriggle a lot, but the BNP babies wriggle much less, probably because they're way more mobile than newborn cichlids. It's all about oxygen . . .

    I can't help but wonder why the male who should of been raising them decided not to ?

    • @TheDave333
      @TheDave333  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If they have several females to spawn with, sometimes a single male can get overwhelmed by all of the egg production and give them the boot because he's too worn out to raise more babies, and sometimes they just fallout of the cave accidentally. Which is probably more often the cause.

  • @karenfishroom6599

    • @TheDave333
      @TheDave333  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If there are too many females and only one male, the males can get worn out and eject the eggs from the cave. Part of the reason is that the males don't eat when they're caring for their young, so if they haven't been fed enough, or they're really hungry they give up and quit tending to the eggs.

    Dave, do you have those plecos today? If yes, how are they?

    • @TheDave333
      @TheDave333  ปีที่แล้ว

      I do still have these plecos! In the beginning, I started with 4 brown / natural colored ones, and those brown adults had some albino babies. I then bred those albino babies with each other to make more albinos. I removed all of the brown ones, and now I just keep albino Ancistrus. My current generation of albino adults produce 100% albino babies, and their great great grand parents were completely brown. . . They breed like crazy. 😁

    • @moonpleco5083
      @moonpleco5083 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds great!
      Albinism is determined by recessive genes, albinos will produce albino offspring, no chance to return. Dark plecos may carry albino genes and smaller part of their young may be albino. Or another combination - one albino parent, second dark - offspring depend of presence of albino gene in dark parent. Example of my Gustav - he is very dark , normal short tailed. His mother was like him but father was long fins albino.

    • @TheDave333
      @TheDave333  ปีที่แล้ว

      In my case, since all of the adults now carry the recessive gene, I haven't seen dark covered fry in over a year. I'm sure one or two will show up in the future. . .

    • @moonpleco5083
      @moonpleco5083 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheDave333 you will not see dark plecos in your population. Except case when you add some fresh blood who are dark. Second case would be self induced mutations toward dark colour but chance is extremely rare.
