This is the performance which blew my mind a age 19. I fell madly in love with her, then not knowing who she was, or who she IS. This is the performance which has lead me to pursue formal voice training. It was brava then, and will be BRAVA, forever!
After watching Sarah Vaughan's performance, I was glad to find these two as well. I was fortunate enough to be at The Grammys that night. One I'll NEVER forget.
Sang, Miss Price! Go 'head on now. That's all right. You hit and held notes that give me immediate chills. Now, I don't know how to measure notes, technically, but that note you hit and held at 0:43 is my favorite from you. Mr. Dizzy Gillespie, you *never* disappoint. I love his work too. Excellent performance.
My God, she's crying, indeed. I've never seen anything like this performance. She's incredible. She has no competition, even at this age. Stunning performance. She ended up in tears, and me also. This is the top level of art, and everyone should know her name. No one within my friends knows her. People don't like operas. what a pity.
at 1:41..you can damn near feel HER SOUL leaving her body in that crescendo. Im sorry...there are a LOT of singers, male and female that I love to hear sing. And its easy to hear that they were born with the gift to interpret song, professionally. But whenever I hear the voice of a woman named Leontyne Price, i get very quiet...and I just listen. For me, she is the greatest professional vocalist in the history of recorded music, irrespective of the genre she makes a living in. I love Joan Sutherland and Montserrat Caballe' and Zinka Milanov...all of them, all time greats. And in other genres of music, the list of names of those I love to listen to, is too long. But on top of the heap for me, sits Leontyne Price...the greatest professional singer of music, the World has ever heard.
You don't understand a black woman's pain. When i think about all that Dame Price had to endure to get to her station in life, all I can say is "How dare anyone comment on her facial expression. The reason why Butterfly was one of her signature roles was because she could relate to the pain.
She's not Dame Price. She's Ms. Leontyne Price. If she was a citizen of the UK or part of its commonwealth, she would have been made a dame by HM. However, Ms. Price is an American.

orionsecret Wow! I was at the 1989 Grammys, too, and was awed by Leontyne Price, one of my opera idols. She was AMAZING! It was quite a night.
Just one year later, Sarah was gone!
Exactly
Wow! This was four years after her retirement at the Met! Incredible!!!!
she seems very pleasant to me and she as a big ole smile reminds me of my grandma
i will never forget watching this...it took me a couple of years to find this video...thanks for posting!

Fourteen years later, I hope life has wrapped you in all things good. Keep well.
What dizzy guillespie perform ?please anyone
Thrilling performances, but it's a shame that Sarah Vaughn's wasn't included in this video.
She has her own. Look up so many stars .... it’s from this event.
Brava Leontyne! But, I don't think this is from 1989. This has to be sometime in the mid 90s.
It was taped Feb. 22, 1989. (Sadly, Sassy only lived another year and a couple of months.. She was already suffering from lung cancer. )
whats the name of the aria she sings
traboe Tu, tu piccolo iddio, from “Madame Butterfly.”
@VoyArrasando thanx
what supreme ignorance. Price has a stage persona and that's what you take umbrage with. why castigate her personally if you don't know her?
