Impressive Leontyne Price !!! From 4:26 the pitch is so well placed that the world rejoice !!!! The line is sung with a perfect tune , brand of great singer !!!!
Always magnificent !!! I don't usually make any comments like this, but the magnificent singer Beverly Sills who introduced Ms. Price, was diagosed with lung cancer and never touched a cigarette.
I remember seeing this when it first aired and thinking, that first phrase in Leontyne's younger years could've been done in one breath, but then thought "she was about 64 at the time and I was resigned to just sit back and enjoy the fact that this was an aria that isn't sung by the faint at heart, so I shut up. Beverly Sill's laugh when Leontyne hands the flowers over backstage says is all! Brava Leonyne for performing at the call of duty...and Conductor, James Levine for just being a cushion for all singers.
@@WelshHomo87 No, they were not. The best singers sing beautifully a large variety of repertoire. Unfortunately, Sutherland, Nilsson, and Callas are only lauded for opera performance for the most part. Perhaps Nilsson can claim some outstanding lieder in her repertoire. A singer will have fundamental weaknesses in the voice if they sing only one or two types of repertoire. Price is regarded as the greatest singer, not only because of her matchless contralto-soprano voice, but also because of her huge repertoire. She is as well praised in Bach, Lieder, Mélodie, Spanish songs ("El Amor Brujo"), American Art Songs, American Folk Songs, Oratory, Hymns, Spirituals, Gospels, and American Popular and Patriotic Songs as she is dominant and lauded for her superlative opera, notably Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Strauss, Gershwin, and Barber for all of whom she is the Definitive Singer. Marcia Davenport, the soprano Alma Gluck's daughter, notes, "Leontyne Price has something that all the great sopranos had and something that none of them had." For that reason alone, she is the greatest singer of them all. Further, she knew well how to manage her voice and her career. She alone of all the singers of the Golden Age retired from Opera and singing in general because she wanted to. All the others retired because they had to; their voices were exhausted. Price's Sterling, Peerless Voice, indeed, The Voice of God, remained intact for her entire vocal career. She came out of retirement at 74 years of age to sing the "9/11 Carnegie Hall Concert of Remembrance" and sounded as glorious and as beautiful as ever. Lastly, she is the greatest singer because she is an excellent pianist, the first step on her training as one of the world's greatest musicians. Mastering the piano makes one a master singer, and Price's spectacular career is living proof of that. Best regards, Jean-Marie

Leontyne price is not 90 years old in this concert. She was 64 just a couple of months shy of 65 which is still absolutely phenomenal.. Beverly Sills died when Leontyne was 80 years old in 2007..
Wonderfully sung. The woman knew what she was doing -- unlike most contemporary singers. She wasn't a dramatic soprano, as Sills states, but a warm lyric with a distinct, instantly recognizable tone. Brava.
Does anyone know what year this performance took place? Because if Leontine Price was 90 then this would have taken place in 2017, 10 years after Beverly Sills' death. According to Wikipedia, Ms. Price's active years were between 1952 and 1997. My guess is that this broadcast was in 1997 or thereabouts. It's still amazing and wonderful for Price to sing this beautifully at 70, as she would have been in 1997. As another commenter said: "If you have a great technique you can sing until you die." Ms. Price is living proof.
Leontyne Price was a Dramatic/ Spinto Soprano not a lyric Soprano.. I heard her say in an interview that she kept the lyric attitude to preserve her voice..

Who is the woman with the stank face at 5:25. She must not realize she was looking at the one and only Kathleen Battle. Crazy, some opera goers, with all that money, still don't have a clue. Unreal.
Take THAT!!! Old age on the voice.... and she just turned 92!!! Touched by God himself💜💜💜
Sheer Excellence! 🤜🏾💗🤛🏾
I'm brought back to this in 2021. Don't look, just listen...64 years old!!
Absolutely stupendous. She brought a whole new dimension to the aria. The technique. I'm speechless
What technique?
Are you stupid?
. She 64. That's technique

If Leontyne Mary did not mash that Rolls Royce of a voice gas petal down with those high notes the world doesn't exists. Love you Leontyne!
Love you Ms price
We most certainly do love Madame Price! 😊
... AMAZING LEONTYNE PRICE , GODESS !!!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
IF you have a great technique you can sing until you die. And there you have it! Stunning.
I can listen to this again and again. Thank you for posting this
Me too, doing it now 2021🥰
2022.....

I love this woman...absolutely glorious
She'd been singing this for 30 years !!!!!!!!!!!
I love the jazzy wrong brass note at 4:55! She was killing it for 64, this aria sat exactly where she shone.
Wonderfully sung. The woman knew what she was doing -- unlike most contemporary singers. She wasn't a dramatic soprano, as Sills states, but a warm lyric with a distinct, instantly recognizable tone. Brava.
Spinto Soprano she was.. idk why Sills said that.. perhaps a marketing phrase to grasp ppls attention?
Majestuosa. Emocionante.
Léontyne Price. Tout est dit.
The greatest!
I don't understand why they didn't give her a standing ovation? She deserved one!!!!!!
Stupendous! Awesome! A great moment forever!
The greatest voice the UNITED STATES graced the world with!
Second only to Rosa Ponselle.
@@liedersanger1 I wish I heard Ponselle live.
Rosa was splendid but she didn’t have the high notes for Strauss like Price.
@@mariomazzi7894 I don’t believe Rosa sang any Strauss, did she?
@@liedersanger1 i am not sure but I am making the statement based on pushed high-notes in the Italian repertoire.
Amo essa música e ela cantando é fenomenal
I LOVE HER!!!!!!!!!!
Imagine, as America is still racist, that this supreme talent existed - beauty, force and power will always win.
Her talent was noticed and nurtured and shaped and celebrated by people of all colors, as she was always the first to say.
Wonderful singer
absolutely her role... and ..sadly not recorded whole opera...
Amazing

J’aimerais entendre les « divas » d’aujourd’hui chanter comme ça à leur retraite…les pauvres

No no. This was the centenary of the opening of Carnegie Hall in 1991. She was 64. Whoever posted this should have included a full description.
are there others arias of this recital????
It was a gala concert and this was her only contribution.
I remember she followed Jessie’s Dich Teure Halle, which was also wonderful.
When was this performed?
UranusRising 1992
I love you
My, God !!!!!!!
Sills and Jennings dead, levine out of a career, leontyne still with us
She was not a dramatic soprano. She was, in her own words, a juicy lyric. It's what imbued the music with that soaring quality she always had!

She's a Spinto
Price “ dramatic soprano “????
No she was a Spinto Soprano... on the heavy side as some would call Drammatico Spinto, but not a full fledged Dramatic Soprano.
