So I was there. I was in the conventional unit he's talking about. As a matter of fact I was the First Sergeant of the company at the place where the mortar platoon was hit (they were co-located). Absolutely devastating day that is a blur of craziness. On that day Sept 1, 2006 one man was killed and another eight or nine seriously wounded. The entire 81mm platoon was killed or wounded except for one guy. They did bring in the helicopters though, in daylight. We had another company push out and secure the LZ. The Delta guys were great, and Tom doesn't need to beat himself up about it. He and his crew did absolutely everything they could to help. Nothing is his fault, the mortarman the insurgents had was really good and we underestimated his ability. The worst part is, the next day was worse. We got hit again and two were killed and another eight or nine were seriously wounded. By mid-afternoon I had nineteen sets of gear to deal with. I only bring up the equipment because it was a very physical reminder of what had happened that sticks in my mind. The two worst days of my life.
Thanks for your and your men's service.
Thank you
That really overwhelmed me when he said grown American men making sounds men shouldn't make.
Please Shawn at the end of every segment please tell these warriors, thank you from all true Americans
Dam right
I thank this man as a Canadian.
15 month rotation circa 07'-08' to patrol base Shanghai in the triangle of death south of that very power station, fob dragon. Being a cherry private and walking with a saw through farm fields after hearing the horror stories of the guys that got kidnapped years before us, put a pucker factor to our patrols for sure. Thanks for the awesome stories, Shawn and fellow brothers
Yeah l, 15 months there. 06-07 at the time I was in B Co, C Co had the power plant. Shits crazy how it all ties us together.
I was there in 05-06 as well but north of you on FOB St micheal. I was in the 101st and thise guys that got mangled up were from our sister company. I'm convinced that whole area Mamudiya, Yusafihya, and Latifihya, aka triangle of death that while area of land is some how cursed. Like biblically cursed. That area has a real eerie vibe to it
@@asashaw9592 I was one of the AF EOD teams that opened that FOB back up after it was abandoned. My team alone did over 160 actual IEDs in six months. I have the video of my truck getting hit with an IED right outside the FOB at Yusafihya. Was Oct '06 I think. We got mortared every time we pulled in there. It was crazy before the surge. The only time I was truly scared was driving Route Malibu.
Same here Aco 1-325 AIR 82nd..04-07 then LRSU.that place was horrible! We went sterile no patches even though they were mainly looking for the screaming eagle patch. Our own mortars got blown up lost a ton dudes.i was out at that old power plant doing PSD for of battalion commander and CSM.
This was my battalion that got hit..me and my TL were dodging our own mortars that were cooking trying to get to the wounded..we got hit sept 02 as well the very next day..killed my buddy Justin Wesley dreese..2para was with us out there as well it was rough.specially the screams.
Unreal. As a grown man this made me feel like the BS I deal with on a daily ain’t shit. So thankful for men like this man and the sacrifices made so we can have the freedom we have.
Many interviews are difficult to watch, but this one especially difficult. I watched him re-live those moments and I’m without words🙏
Tears in my eyes when he was saying the choppers were coming in. I know the feeling if good guys get you out of a miserable situation in a fuck up country.
God bless 🇺🇸!
Greetings from 🇳🇱
God bless both of you guys for sharing this, helps in more ways than I can say.
I was in the same area that tom is talking about. I was 101st 2ndBCT in the "triangle of death" 05 -06. I knew a couple of those guys that got kidnapped. Those insurgent mortar teams in that AO were pretty accurate with mortar fires. I remember one Team launched a 120 mm mortar that went directly in the gunners hatch of a humvee and hit the top gunner but didnt explode and killed the gunner. That AO was insane during thise years
I was there as an EOD tech from Sep 06-Jan 07. It was a bad place to call home for six months. RIP Team Lima
Thank you for this interview I was in the 101st in that area. It was right off route red wings. Thank you
Tom Spooner is a great Soldier. I hope you have him on more often.
I just wrote about 4 paragraphs with tears in my eyes then realized it was to much lol all I wanted to say is I feel for him and hopefully his life has been filled with love and happiness since that tragic day .. god bless guys you are what makes America the best country in the world and wanting all humans to live with freedoms isn’t a bad thing it’s honorable… if Americans actually learned how these animals treat there own woman and children they would be amazed but instead we have college kids saying they want communism there the same animals that were spitting on soldiers coming home from Vietnam .. God Bless America god bless our soldiers and there families because they have to live with the horrors also …
He doesnt treat He only heals instantly, makes new, whole, One in Him. Love you much.
Best podcast on the internet. It's neck and neck wiyh JRE. But, you pushed through for the win. Well done.
No matter how elite, no soldier is all seeing or all knowing. Anyone can be surprised or overwhelmed. No shame in it. All you can do is the best you can in a given time.
I was on that mission, just a young E4 saw gunner. Lost 2 good friends in that God forsaken power plant. The SGT that took me under his wing and made sure I got my EIB and my best friend from sand hill. I am a 1SG now and that place still haunts my dreams. I'm so lucky that I had amazing leaders that kept me alive.
I spent a few weeks on maintenance missions at the "fiyas" south of Baghdad when I was with the 101st in '05-06. Not exactly a vacation destination...
Great show Sean great insight you don’t get more real than this unless you’re actually there
Love the show and the great work you do!
I spent seven months in 2005 in Mahmudiyah as an Abram's tanker. It was a very very busy AO.
Thank you
Great interview. Would like to see you have bob keller on.
Tough.
I was there. Just down the road from this in another blocking position. That was a sh*tty day.
It is so hard to process the honesty of what he’s saying. Sometimes life is too real.
Love your show
It was an unrealistic expectation that he was going to protect the Americans he was with. Never forget that the enemy gets a vote - always. All you can do is your best and then FIDO.
Rough
His guy is hardcore
I spent the end of my 1st tour('03-'04) and all of my 2nd tour('05-'06) in the "Triangle of Death", and it was every bit of what Tom says it was. My 2nd tour I was in A co 1-502nd and all of the stuff that happened with Bco was absolutely horrific.
Would love to see Nicholas Irving on the shawn ryan show!
Insane.
One of the hardest hitting narrations ive heard
God bless and thank you for your service.
From a proud retired US Army soldier
Don’t even know what to say besides…thank you sir for your service🇺🇸
Great warrior, worked with Tom at A/3/7 before he did the walk. We all have the scars of war that no-one can see. Keep fighting brother! DOL
Much respect for Delta ? Was fortunate enough to have to sit through a Delta recruitment session in the early 80’s. I wouldn’t have made it but would have love to try. Surprised that operators would have to go out with regular army.
Full of foreign fighters, you say? 🤦♂️
I feel for these guys. They see a lot of bad shit. Damn.
He should have Don MF Shipley on the show if he hasn't already
😥
Love how the TH-cam algorithm puts fucked up shit I don't want to watch when I want to watch and listen to this.
Would you like to go to the triangle 📐 of death?...sure.
Beautiful in a way 99.9% of the way most humans can not comprehend. Thank God for Men like this.
