- I was fortunate to be able to fly the F-16 and F/A-18 in my career, but many viewers have asked what aircraft I wish I could have flown. Here's my top 5 Non-US Jets list.

It would be a bit of a PR fiasco if Saab doesnt reach out to you again to try the reschedule a flight for you. Kom igen Sverige!
Just sent an email to Saab about it. I mean "Military Aviation History" channel got to fly it, they have around the same amount of subs so. Fingers crossed att han får flyga världens fränaste plan :)
Failing that Brazil has a few, and not too bad a place to visit, there's even a UK's Empire Test Pilot school, that has a Gripen D in its fleet of student aircraft.
@@foxpoint-seIf I remember correctly, Justin Bronk from the RUSI also had an opportunity to fly on a Gripen.
Military aircraft contracts don't not rely on PR stunts but strategic alliances and bribes.
And if not, there's a SAAB J35 Draken forward end converted to a full imersion simulator at the museum in Ängelholm that's open to the public, and I think there's an A/J37 and possible also a JAS39A sim of the same type at the aircraft museum at the SAAB airfield in Linköping.😊
Don't give up on the Gripen! Let's start a petition 😬Maybe Justin Bronk got a good contact over at SAAB.. would be super interesting to listen to conversations about the difference and similarities of gripen and f16. Not only flight characteristics but philosophy and so on. @Maxvillman got some really good interviews with the head of design at SAAB and even the gripen E test pilot at their facility in Linkoping. Would be amazing if you got to fly and even do interviews there. Cheers for a good show!
It's awesome you mentioned the Flanker, I have a distant cousin in the Indian AF who is among the first 15 females in the entire country who was chosen to fly fighters. She now flies the Su-30MKI!
That's something like real life Hindi movie Fighter!
Edit: Is she Deepika Padukone? :)
@@jovana-che lol well Deepika flies a Helicopter in that movie so no lol
Thats super cool dude. The flanker family have one of my favorite aircraft in them. And the SU-30 is a beautiful beast. Super sick dude
All great choices.
gripen is so cool and obviously im biased since im a swede but after doing more research on fighter jets i realised that we have been making fighter jets of top quality for a long time.
Sorry to hear you missed the Grippen, a trainer with back seat controls or even not, would have been a blast for you. A real shame.
I knew the Gripen would make the top 5 :)
Thypoon new versions have UK and Italy (AESA by Leonardo) involved only, no Germans and others.
Just to know.
It was the Gripen D that you were offered to fly in.
Folland Gnat mate . You can do the Paula Abdul spinning reversal move from Hot Shots
He missed the chance of flying the Gnat in the "the navy" and doing carrier landings in the S.S.ESSESS
my top 5 in no specific order: Mirage 2000, Gripen, Rafale, MiG-31, C-2
The phoon all day over the rrafale sukoi over mig
@@Cjmatthews87nah never
MiG-31 would probably be a wild ride
@@102ndsmirnov7 IM GONNA MAKE A SUPERSONIC MAN OUTTA YOUUUUUUUUU DONT STOP ME NOOWWWWWWWWWWWWW
As a Swede I’m glad you put the Gripen at number one. I have a feeling people tend to don’t like the Gripen because of the lack of thrust to weight ratio but it will be better with the E-version and the fighter fits the Swedish airspace perfect.
I think the Gripen is the perfect fighter jet for Taiwan, but I don't think they'll ever be able to get them due to political reasons.
I hope Thailand goes for Gripen E. US wants to sell The Viper. Starka tilsammans. Från Finland.❤
@@jussihailaI believe Thailand already has Gripen-E's.
@@nilanjangupta763 Nope. They operate JAS-39C and D.
@jussihaila same as South Africa
As a Swede, really fun to hear. :) Loved the American list aswell.
ohhhhh I love the swedish fighters.....I still remember my 1988 birthday present, it was a 1980 guide of fighters....and in there I fell in love of the saab Viggen....
Yeah, pretty amazing such a small country in terms of population/economy etc can produce such a jet. I remember pictures of the Viggen on the motorway in the forest photos from the 80s. Just the camo scheme was awesome too then!
Observers book/guide to Aircraft? I had the same one!
Also is a cheap fighter, but not very popular ... probably because lack of advertising and bribes
the viggen will always be one of if not the best looking jets of all time
@@SgtSteel1 yeah, illustrated guide to modern fighters and attack aircraft by Bill Gunston....I did the mistake to lend it to a friendin the 90s....lost forever:-(
As a Brit I'm glad we got the Typhoon , fed up with being the Oliver Twist of NATO - imagine trying to take on Vipers , Eagles ,Hornets & Tomcats in a Lightning or Phantom in friendly exercises. The Tornado F3 was a step up but dogfighter it was not .
the Tornado is very cool (specially the long nose F3) but as you say a BFM machine not so much.. i renember how hard i laughted when i saw this series about Italian fighter pilots (Aguila is called) who flew F-104s and Tornado IDS and one girl asks them "whats a Tornado" and one of them says "renember Top Gun? its the same jet"
@@Pale_Nomad That isn't how the QE class history went though. They were designed from the outset for F-35 and were always intended for it. The carriers entered service in 2017, and got their jets in 2018, so there was no real delay in practical terms. Going for F/A-18s or Rafale Ms would have just meant getting a previous gen fighter in very small numbers for great expense and no real benefit in the end since F-35 was coming along very soon regardless. There was never a plan to operate older gen jets in the carrier force.
@@Pale_Nomad Have you ever worked with the French on an aerospace project?
I can tell you from personal experience that they are a complete nightmare. On every tiny detail, it is 'my way or the highway' with them.
The UK has made a lot of money out F35, between 15% and 20% of every F35 is made in the UK, depending on the variant. There probably wouldn't be the engineering capability in the UK to do Tempest, if the UK had chosen Rafale.
The Italians are excellent partners, we rated them the best of the three countries when it came to engineering and the Japanese are ahead of the USA in some sensor technologies. So Tempest is off to a good start and well ahead of the Franco/Spanish/German 6th generation equivalent.
The argument about the launch method for the carriers is very complex and was, no doubt, done to death by the OR groups. I am not sure that it would have been any better waiting five years for the USN to sort out EMALS, than for F35Bs. In the February report on Gerald R Ford it was noted that the only thing that was keeping EMALS operational was 24/7 engineering support from continental USA.
@@Retrosicotte But they could have been F-35C

7:10 - best quote (about Cobra and stuff):
"It looks cool, and who doesn't wanna look cool? That's like rule number one of being a fighter pilot."
Fighter pilot gold!
One of my fellow fighter pilots - a senior colleague at Eglin AFB - once said, "Looking good is a full-time job."
It also allows you to get some ridiculous angles for a gunshot or a fox-2.
I was sure you would say Su-27 as number 1 so when you made it number 2 I was stumped... but good call on the Gripen!
For me, not being a pilot, so take it for what it's worth, I have #5 Mig-29 #4 Eurofighter Typhoon, #3 SU-35, #2 Grippen, #1 Rafale. That Rafale is just SOOOOOO pretty!
It be even prettier if didn’t have the fuel thing sticking out.
@@bobbyraejohnson nah, thats the thing you see first when you see later Mirage F1/2000 ... it doesnt disturb Aerodynamics that great and dont need a (heavy) mechanic to drop in or out... so...
Sounds like you need to join the Indian Air Force! You can fly 4 of your wish list, mirage 2k, rafale, MiG 29 and su30mki. They also got a few stowed away sea harriers and MiG 25 fox bats! I would love to get a ride in foxbat and have it go Mach 2.6+
The ' Wanker ' in the back brings a whole new meaning to co-pilot/ WISO.
My picks….. #5, Harrier, #4, MiG-29, #3, Typhoon, #2 Tornado, #1, Rafale.
I too love the Rafale!
no A10 ?
@@lamsior he's talking about jets, not machine gun with wings 😂 (i love the A10 too)
As an Air Cadet (in the '80s) I got to sit in the cockpit of a Tornado at RAF Brüggen (height of the Cold War) and had a flight in the base simulator. Happy days!
We all know it's the polikarpov I-16
Yeah, the Gripen is my favourite European jet.
For all the reasons you said but _also_ for all the time and thought they've put into what needs to be done to keep it in the air.
You just need a road strip, it's very STOL capable and requires only a weapons truck, fuel truck and two basically trained soldiers to turn it around and get it airborne again, i live that kind of holistic thinking when it comes to war fighting, it's so important.
This is why Gripen is _the_ jet for Ukraine.
Saab just needs to make a version over which America holds no sway.
Hah! That 6 meteor 2 ASRAAM version probably has the munitions costing more than the jet! 😂
That's the problem with our missiles at the moment, they are just too expensive to keep in production in a war.
What you think if it wasn't for using US engines that the entire world would be flying Gripens or something? Gripen simps are really something else.
Although I would love to fly the Gripen and the Viggen, the Swedish fighter on the top of my list is the Draken. Hands down the coolest fighter jet in history! The engine scream like a Tie Fighter and THE original of the “Kort Parad”, or as it was later known as “The Cobra”. And the plane is BEAUTIFUL!
Same for me, love the Draken.
@@bobthebomb1596 I used to serve in AA forces in the Finnish army and the air force squadron nearby had Drakens back then before we switched to F/A-18's and those damn pilots used to fly just over our barracks during the night and those things were loud as hell. Honestly I hope those pilots stepped on Legos. 😄
The smaller prototype (Saab 210) they built first is even more beautiful!
There is a Draken airframe and cockpit built into a max immersion simulator at Ängelholms Flygvapenmuseum that's open to the public for a separate booking fee.
The museum is located around 1.5h drive North along the E6 highway from Copenhagen international airport.
You can also get there by train to Ängelholm city (trains heading from Denmark towards Göteborg and Oslo stops at the Kastrup airport terminal and Ängelholm city, and from Ängelholm, there is busses every 30 minutes in summer time, everyb60 minutes in winter, the city also has a very good railroad museum and good quality restaurants for every preference within 15min walk from the train station.
Those Flakers are the sexiest planes out there.
behind the F-15 no doubt
@@SneakyVito Everyone have own taste ^^
@@SneakyVito F-15 is such an ugly jet...
@@topkitenaAin’t no way…
@@KristopherMarieas one said before - everyone has different taste. But for me F-15 looks like Lego-plane similar to Foxbat, both look as square as a brick (=almost ugly). My top 3 are F-16s, Flankers and Mirages
I never heard of the Gripen until I saw that Canada was considering buying them, and I got obsessed. Such a terrific looking plane. I'm glad to see an actual pilot singing its praises.
We could have done well choosing the Gripen, Typhoon, or Rafale. No loser planes in that contest.
You'd love the Gripen (soo freakin' nimble) and EF2000 (thrust/weight ratio and how this a/c regains speed, even in straight vertical fight, makes this machine a killer - even for a Viper junkie like me).
MiG29/Su27 are a lot of fun to fly too but they may be too analog for you... they would bring way too much memories/nightmares from T-38A's 😂
I have never sat nor even talked too any Mirage 2000 driver so no opinions here but Rafale is also sick jet to fly.
Su27 might be but Su30SM and Su35 are digital as fuck lmao
As a Swede I totally agree with your thoughts. If I could pick any plane I would choose the F 22, the Spitfire, the Mustang, the Albatros D, and Gripen E.
My list would be the F15, F-16, MiG-29, Flanker (Any/All variants), Su-57. No specific order, but I would like to fly those aircraft
Good for Europe....Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault Rafale and Saab Jas 39 Gripen . Three very nice and capable aircraft.
Typhoon above Rafale ??? seriously ? laughing hard here :)
I'm suprised that you underestimated the Rafale. I think it's because you may not know a lot about it, since you placed it as a "simili-Mirage 2000", but it's not the same generation at all. But putting it eventually behind the Gripen and the Typhoon 🤔 the Typhoon looks vaguely like the Rafale ("a canard jet"), but they are two VERY different aircrafts. The Rafale is a true omnirole (attack, air superiority, nuclear strike, reconnaissance, NAVAL capability, buddy-buddy refuelling, ...), that was designed as such, but that can largely compete with the Typhoon even in its own domain (air superiority). The canards of the Rafale are very different, they don't have the same purpose at all (and they don't block pilot's sight!!!). It wins the evaluations almost every time according to pilots (Switzerland, ...).
Not a Swede, but seeing you put Gripen at #1 warms my heart. A stunning aircraft, and if not the one of the best looking one in my opinion. 10/10 list.
BTW, Gripen is designed to take off and land from highways, no runway required...
Oh a long strip of concrete is so much different on a highway then the long strip of concrete on a runway. The only impressive part to that is the wings not hitting street lights. Any plane can find a road long enough straight away to land and take off
Mirage 2000: "Its not Viper, its better "
Even ATE don't say that
It seems difficult to choose between these fighters. All of these foreign fighters that you mentioned are very wonderful, and in my opinion, I would love to fly in the Rafale. or any flanker.
How about Rafale?
Stinky cheese
On a TPS instructor's visit to Australia I got to fly the PC-9, what an amazing turbo prop aircraft!
Apparently only F16 lost on an air to air fight was against the mirage 2000-5 (greece vs turkey). Hope it won't change in Ukraine...
Also Rafale > Typhon, by far !
Buccaneer, Mirage F-1, Viggen, Lightning, Kfir. (Last SS jet flown was the RF-8G with the J-57 P420 engine)
Mirage F1
For me it would be:
#5 A10
#4 MIG 29
#3 Mirage 2000
#2 F15
#1 RAFALE
BONUS AIRCRAFT: Vought F4U Corsair
Since you’re planning on doing an experimental aircraft episode and you were a viper pilot. I’m gonna go out on the way and say that the 16 XL will be on your list. Maybe I’m right, maybe I’m wrong, but it was one fantastic looking jet.

Any plans for a "Top 5 Jets I wish I could have flown but they were before my time" video? I would be VERY interested in hearing your thoughts on the CF105 Avro Arrow.
hey Mover really hope u do get another chance to fly the Gripen! love from Sweden
No comparison between Rafale and Mirage 2000-5. Rafale is a 4++ (4.5) Generation while Mirage, Eurofighter, Saab JAS 39 Gripen and Mig29 are 4 (or 3.5). Comparable to Su35 (F3R Variant) and to F35 (F4 Variant). Why not the SU57 though?
I hope the Gripen's find more buyers. It is good the there is diversity in design and producers. Consolidation is great the cost control and streamlining but having a little "genetic" diversity makes sure Boeing can drag us all down at once.
From the uk i just wanted to say a very big thank you for your service and shzring your content. I absolutly love the EUROFIGHTER and ive loved the phoon since a kid. I love the f22 and clearly the ej200 powered phoon. Russian jet i prefer sukoi over migs although similar. Not a fan of rafale nor the french lol if britain wasnt ran by worthless politicians wed of built many more iconic jets but a money and bad management. The harrier was always a favourite too and i recently foubd that the f35 uses rolls royce vtol technology as used in the harrier which is cool. I live next to ROLLS ROYCE jet engibe facility in Derby uk so love anything jet. Keep up the great content and again Thank you for your service. 🇬🇧❤🇺🇸
Phone Sweden and make it happen!
Would be great content for the channel.😊
What i don't get about jet engines, somebody explain this to me.
Twin jets use and produce (dry):
RD-33 11,000 lbf
EJ200 14,000 lbf
F100 15,000 lbf
Single jets use:
M53-P2 15,000 lbf
F100 15,000 lbf
_Pegasus _*_24,000 lbf_*
Why does only the Harrier have a much more powerful engine?
It's max dry thrust matches and _even exceeds_ what the other engines can do in reheat.
Why? Why isn't Pegasus, or it's core, in _all_ of the other jets?
Why doesn't an eagle have 48,000 lbf max dry thrust?
Man i wish SAAB would step up and make it a possibility for you to get a ride still.
As a Swede, the JAS 39 Gripen would be disqualified for my top 5 foreign aircraft so.. here's my list:
5. Rafale
4. Su-30
3. F-22 (I think I need to learn how to actually fly first, if they don't build a two seater just for me :)
2. B-1B
1. SR-71
Kinda expected Harrier being on this list.
These all have after burners. I believe harriers were actually pretty slow in comparison to all of the jets on this list. He should do a list with jets that don't have afterburners! I would be curious to know what his opinions are
"foreign"
@@RedTail1-1 Isnt Harrier British?
@@RedTail1-1 British variant.
The Flanker has to be on there and I don’t blame you. It’s my favourite plane and I know many people love it too. It’s the only Russian plane that doesn’t get shit from the Americans.
One of my top 5 would be the mig 23 simply because its a top fuel dragster in the A2A varient. That 1.5 second spool up time would be pretty cool. I know it wont turn but i wanna pin the ears back...lol
Later variants were pretty nimble by third-gen standards. Obviously not going to go nose pointing with a Hornet, but they certainly wouldn’t be helpless in BFM in their era.
Good picks. Flanker though. If there is an arch-enemy, that is it.
As a brit my top 5 foreign to fly would be
F22
Rafale

Typhoon
Tornado
EL Lightning
Jaguar
Buccaneer

Grippen
Draken
Viggen
Flanker
A-10
Harrier
Su-57
Nice list, I would probably have put the Rafael in instead of the M2000 and maybe a Tornado, Viggen or Draken instead of the Mig 29.
I was sad to see Eurofighter at 3rd, because I thought there's no way the Gripen would end up here. And yet, here she is!
Of course you should come to Sweden and you should bring Gonky too. I’m sure SAAB would love to have you guys over.

Lol, you are completely right, I have no idea why I typed that,😂😅😅
What about the Rafale ?
Absolutely fantastic; I agree, the Saab has what it takes. A lot of good jets, but this one, you could almost maintain with your mates ;)
I wish Canada picked the Gripen. Maintaining the F35 here in Canada " poor military country" will be a catastrophe.
the f35 is literally self maintaining...

Hello from sweden mr lemoine😂
The Gripen would be my number one aircraft. That's of the aircraft currently in military service. Saab has produced incredible aircraft, even more incredible once you look at the GDP of Sweden.
I thought maybe you would bunch the Mirage/Rafale for a Mitsubishi F-2. Just to see what the differences and similarities between the F-2A and the C variant Viper.
Girlfriends and injuries; two things that kept Mover from getting into the Raptor and the Gripen. 😢
Hey, Mover, in addition to helos, you should do bombers, transports, and/or tankers too. Keep it up! 💯
This ☝
Outside USA:
Su-27, any variant.
Mig-25/31.
Mirage 2000
Rafale
Gripen.
EFA.
My picks? I've been studying Soviet/Russian aircraft all my life.
1. Su-35BM
2. MiG-29/35 (tie)
2. F-15C/EX (tie)
3. MiG-31 (tie)
3. P-51D and after good god i love this thing so much
4. Su-15 thing is big
5. F-22/35 these things would be higher but the list is restrictive
SAAB Viggen, J-20 Mighty Dragon, Su 47 Berkut, Su 30SM, Me 262 Schwalbe (from WW2 but it's a jet aircraft so it counts)
As an ADAIR bro I love how much youre holding back on two of these picks
I want to fly these jets - F - 14 Tomcat / Su - 37 Terminator / F - 4 Phantom / F - 15 Eagle Ex II / Su - 30SM 2 / F - 22 Raptor / Su - 35S / Rafale M / Typhoon / Su - 57 etc
Might be worth noting two things with SAAB's jets.
1 Gripen was gen 4.5 atleast since Model C but atleast 4.25 since A version and E Version is more or less Gen 4.75 - 5ish.
Now SAAB dont use the gen lingo as it is old Marketing talk from Lockheed and not really usefull to deem how well a system actually works.
2 Gripen is the third SAAB jetfigter generation with DAta-Lnk.
Viggen was the second.
But the worlds first fighter system capable to use Data-Link was Draken and the worlds first Digital Data-Link system was Swedens STRIL 60.
It entered Service in 1960 hence its name.
Viggen was the first jet to get a built in Digital Computer and HUD.
It was also the first to have Jakt-Link aka seamless linking between the 4 fighters wihtout any outside comm, this was implemented in 1984.
U.S airforce did not get this until the introduction of F-22 Raptor.
Also if i could fly any jet then it would probably be SAAB J29, or SAAB J21R or De Havilland Vampire.
Best regards.
My rankings is
1st - f22
2nd - f35
3rd - rafale
4th- typhoon
5th - tejas mk1

#1 isn't the Spitfire? I suppose it's not a jet :(
I'd go for the Mossie 😅 I'd take that and the Spitfire over any jet any day)
I quite astonished you mentioned the EF-2000 rather than the Rafale, which is a far more versatile and capable aircraft 😊
A classic but what about the English Electric Lightning? Such power in those engines (short range permitting) 😊
5. Panavia Tornado
4. Suhkoi SU-15 Flagon
3. Mig 25 Foxbat
2. English Electric Lightning
1. Saab Viggen
Very much cold war aircraft (Tornado did have an extended life into the modern age).
Swede here would pick Rafale & F-15, wow these two have impressed me the most live! F-22 (duh), Harrier, SU-xx in some order to sh•t my pants in. SwAF better get you in a Gripen D or brazilian F-39F 😎
Surprised the SR-71 wasn't in the last list. But maybe didn't qualify.

Ah, some Harrier bait... 😈😉
Your obviously a very well experienced fighter pilot.
Why is it that American fighter pilots shit on sukhui aircraft?
I thought in a dog fight, it was all about who can close the circle.
Sukhui, seems to do that very well.
Just a simple GA pilot asking.
Individual initiative & tenacity, resourcefulness is what makes us better than them. Are you listening, Mr. Putin?
I grew up around the RAF my father being a pilot...Shackleton's and Nimrods and whenever that topic came up the plane that everyone said you must fly at least once was the Hawker Hunter, it seemed to be held in really high regard by the aircrew and pretty much every Air Force that flew it seemed to have adored them as well.
Was lucky enough to get a pax ride with a little stick time in a Mirage III back in the Jurassic. Built with one job in mind - get up there and fuck up Soviet bomber streams as quick as you can. It was like flying a stick of dynamite.
what about the tr.b anti grav black triangle arv? or bob lazrs sport model saucer.or even the sr 72 hypersonic jet?
Let me guess your WWII American aircraft: F4U, P-51, P-38, F6F, P-47. At least, this is my list.
I know its an old lady, but I'd like to try to fly MIG-25.
Or perhaps MIG-31.
