  • In this video, I make a Steel Knot by Bending Rebar, without using heat. This knot will be used in a future Industrial Style shelf bracket.
    The knot is called a larks head knot.
    I love the look of industrial-style furniture and rebar with knots fits right in with the look I like.
    I hope you enjoy my video of the project, it was a lot of fun to make.
    The main tools used were a Hammer and a bench vise.
    Tools / Supplies, I often use are.

    Note: When you bend metal/rebar, you naturally weaken it. Bending it cold will normally cause fine cracks, and it may even break if you put enough strain on the rebar or bend it in the same place too many times. Do not rely on cold-bent steel/rebar to support a load.

      @@jonathangarzon2798 Hi Jonathan I am not using any of my rebar works, as structural stuff or to swing off, they are generally ornamental shelves etc, (I would be using much better quality steel if I was). Feel free to do these tests yourself on some rebar where you are, I don't have a microscope photo camera. BUT you can very closely see the most stretched bit of this rebar when I move the finished knot super close to the camera. I have no doubt in my mind that the rebar is weaker where I have bent it, if I bend it a few more times I can break it. Hope that helps

The people that lay the mesh may be able to help you get small rebar. Hope that helps a bit.

    As a welder/fabricator for 35+ years, this is called "welder hands"...the ability to bend metal without using machinery, or heat, it's just a really cool skill...the down side is that you keep breaking shit around the house....my wife won't let me touch the can opener, and other things...for some reason plastic and wood often break when I mess with it. How do you determine the length you marked before making the 2nd bend, is it based on rebar size being bent or desired diameter of finished knot opening, thx great vid!

    • @GavinClarkdiy
      @GavinClarkdiy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well, I basically guess it, The rebar varies in size as sometimes there are more or less lumps on the sides. I generally put together the number of bits I need to bend it over and bend the tape measure over it and take a measurement. It does not have to be perfect, it is better to be a bit long than short, as it will just make the curve over the bars sit out a bit more. Hope that helps a bit.

      @@GavinClarkdiy You guess it? Wow You have a very good "eye-meter" bro! I've tried but I get weird results all the times: it is either too big or too short for the purposes I have... not precise enough

    • @GavinClarkdiy
      @GavinClarkdiy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always measure what I am doing so if it does not turn out I know if it should be shorter or longer than the failed one. I am not a Blacksmith but they do most things like this without measurements.

    How long was the distance you marked off starting off at 2:01 minutes to get your second bend. Real nice job by the way.

    • @GavinClarkdiy
      @GavinClarkdiy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I think it was 52mm, but basically it is always a bit of a guess, I am using 7mm rebar, and that varies a bit in size too, plus some of the bars have more knobs on it that others, and that all plays with how long you need, but it does not have to be a perfect length, the curve will just be a bit tighter or looser if you are out a bit. Hope that helps.
