      @@StLouis-yu9iz St. Louis is a dump. North St. Louis and Washington Park resemble 3rd world countries. Sure, KC has its share of bad areas too, but nowhere near as bad as St. Louis has. You can't get a decent pizza in StL, StL style pizza is puke on a cracker. All thin crust with provel cheese. The Arch is literally the ONLY thing StL has going for it. I lived there for 10 years, and was thoroughly unimpressed, but the delusion that it's somehow a great eastern city like Chicago was impressively hilarious.

    Born and raised in KC. I used to visit the small museum in the northeast. It was a dime entry. The art gallery on the plaza is fantastic. We used to go to Volker park with our baby. That was over 50 yrs ago. Went to several rock concerts at arrowhead.

      @@HawklordLI And what was called for a while "Freedom Palace" near 31st and Main that hosted some big name groups like The Grateful Dead, etc. was built originally as "The Pla-Mor Ballroom", a dance hall that had a floor built on spring shock absorbers so dancers wouldn't tire as quickly.
      Afterwards Cowtown Ballroom became the venue for regional, and 2nd tier bands trying to advance their careers. That's where Brewer and Shipley often played. They had the best chilled apples.
      A lot of bigger name groups during that era often played at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas, the last place Patsy Cline performed before she died tragically in a plane crash.
      Hendrix played in Kansas City just once, at the Vanguard Coffee House in the area that was the old town of Westport.
      And I worked with an old-timer who went to high school with Charley Parker.

      Kcmo is mostly detached single family homes and suburban sprawl with low density; more so than Overland Park and Lenexa. And over 50% of the metro areas office space is in Johnson county Kansas. Johnson county Kansas is the most densely populated and wealthiest county with over 613,000 people. Johnson county’s median household income is 96,059$ and kcmos is 60,042$. Theres more people living within 5 miles of downtown Overland Park than within 5 miles of downtown kcmo. Very good description. I live very close to Kansas City, but another good place to visit is the country club plaza. It’s home to many beautiful fountains, stores, and plenty of cars and buildings that cost a pretty penny. There’s also tons of bad parts of kcmo. Like around the kcmo/independence border. Those boast some sketchy environments. But if you go around the country club plaza and don’t go around the neighborhoods in middle to western independence/eastern kcmo, you’ll be fine. 24 highway, and parts of 23rd street can get very bad later in the day or during the night. But the Kansas side is much safer and higher class. So if you were gonna get a hotel somewhere, go to leawood, or Olathe, or Shawnee. Those places are the best parts of kc to be in

    Kauffman performing arts center is where i graduated high school at. It was so amazing to walk the stage! I wish you brought up more about art, as we have an art district, graffiti style art everywhere, and its not just your typical tags people do, its actual art! The art alley in the west of kcmo is an all time favorite area, bars everywhere, along with tons of street art that changes all the time. I have pictures of old art that will never be seen again. Jazz is big here, but so is art!

      Number streets go east and west. If on KS side, numbers go up as you go south, if on MO side numbers go up going north.
      435 is a loop around the entire city, 35 cuts down the middle north/south. 70 cuts down the middle east/west. 70 and 35 intersect downtown. It's like a large grid.

Kansas City obviously does not have any height restrictions on downtown buildings. In St Louis, the Gateway Arch was always intended to stand out as the tallest building on the Mississippi River front.

    I’m 44, and for some reason when I’m thinking of big cities in the U.S., Kansas City has always completely slipped my mind, and I know practically nothing about it. Sure I know the Royals and the Chiefs as pro sports go, but it always has confused me as to why they are there, thinking the city is tiny and not mentioned much in general conversation. For instance, you don’t really hear of someone taking a vacation there, or a movie being set there. Nor do you hear of some iconic monument or place like the Empire State Building or the St. Louis Arch. It’s too bad too, because it really looks like a nice place. I like seeing videos like this. It actually gives me some information and makes me want to go there.

    KC is city of history. One of the suburbs, Independence is home to the National Frontier Trails Center, the jail where Frank James the outlaw was captured, and is where President Truman's home and presidential library are located. The library is significant due to Truman being the president that called for the first nuclear bombs being dropped during WWII. Come tour the town in a covered wagon! Or travel north to Liberty MO and check out even more history. Book a stay at one of many beautiful bed and breakfasts in the area or stay at the Elms Hotel for a visit back to the days of healing mineral waters. Lots of bike trails and hiking as well as water fun and Worlds of Fun theme park is also nearby.

      Mom, deceased at 93, came to KC in 1943, coming from a shack farm with no running water or inside toilet. They, as a family, came in on a covered wagon from Marshfield, Mo, or Northview, Mo. ?? Evidently, went to Grand Central at one point. Mom was 17 yrs old then. She had never seen such a crowded, trashy place, so she said. They moved to an apartment. Mom wanted to see the neighborhood so was so proud when made it around the block without getting lost. Ha! She got a job downtown in one of the stores, now gone I'm sure. I think it was Kreskes. Not sure. Anyway, it was in 1943. Joan Crawford had worked there too, I believe, same yr.

    • @jhandle4196
      @jhandle4196 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many of the covered wagons purchased by settlers heading west, after taking a steamboat trip to Independence before the Civil War were built by a business owned by a free black man who employed people of all races.
      Independence with a population of over 100,000 itself is still the official county seat of Jackson County. It wasn't just the stockyards though that led to Kansas City's growth, but that it was built right on the river bank whereas Westport; and Independence are on the high ridges more than two miles overland from the rivers.
